Temperance Moore: Q2

In the making of my slide I learned that it didn't have to be more than one slide, not only because we were only supposed to do one slide but also because slides are short, simple and to the point. Reading the tips from Presentation Zen helped me to make my slide into what it is now. I didn't get anything from the internet I just used pictures of me and other people from off my computer. I chose the saying in the middle because it expresses how I am, mistakes don't make me depressed they just help me learn that I need to do something better and I just continue to be happy and move on with my life.

Currently, this has not been a good year for my legislature seeing, as though there have been thousands of budgets cuts all throughout the School District of Philadelphia. Numerous teachers have lost their jobs, several programs have been cut, and many quintessential pieces of education have been lost this year. Many of the elected leaders actually support what I am lobbying; the only issue is a lack of proper funding. In the past, elected officials haven’t been conscientious of their spending, which is why we are feeling the repercussions now. Mainly, my opponents are those who represent districts where funding is plentiful and can afford to spend money wherever they see fit. Currently, officials are getting rid of things that aren’t one hundred percent essential to the growth of the district.

In my opinion, I would need to gain the support of state representative Ronald Waters and the superintendent of the School District of Philadelphia. With these two individuals supporting me, they most likely will have a large enough say over how money is spent throughout the district that it will have a meaningful impact or even change how the legislature is viewed by those it affects.

I don’t know anyone personally that is lobbying the same topic as I am, but my plan is to travel down to the school district building and see who has the most influence in lobbying the same thing as I am. In my opinion, seeing as though I am only seventeen people may not take me seriously when I first bring my idea to someone’s attention. But as I continue to explain and show my knowledge of this topic, I think I can get the attention of those who attend meetings to discuss what are the negative and positive things pertaining to the well being of the district. I think I can have some meaningful progress towards my overall goal by the beginning of the next fall term for students.

As of Monday, January 8th, 2007, the new Philadelphia Smoking Ban is in effect.  City health inspectors will be imposing $300 fines on local eating and drinking establishments in violation of the new law. January 2007, the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law went into effect, banning smoking in Philadelphia’s restaurants creating a healthy environment for workers and their customers. The law also bans smoking in outdoor seating areas and patios of restaurants and bar, A 2007 Gallup poll found that 54% of Americans favored a complete ban inside of restaurants, 34% favored a ban in all hotel rooms, and 29% favored a ban inside of bars.

The people are the stakeholders in the issue. People who are smoking are not only putting themselves at risk but they are putting others at risk. Many people smoke in public places therefore causing second hand smoke. Secondhand smoke is classified as a “known human carcinogen” (cancer-causing agent) by the US Environmental Protection Agency.( http://www.epa.gov/gateway/science/air.html)

The Foundation for a Smoke Free America provides school-based programs to educate children about the dangers of smoking. In 1986, Patrick Reynolds became the first tobacco industry figure to turn his back on the cigarette makers. He is the grandson of the tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds. If people are ready to change America to a smoke free America, they need to start with the children. If we educate our children now they can be the reason that we save other lives.

The status of my issue is still to be determined I would say that this isn’t a good year because although the curfew in Philadelphia is needed the way there going about it is completely wrong.  Although there are many public officials that support the issue such as Mayor Nutter, Blondell Reynolds (main supporter), Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Everett Gillison, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey there are many who don’t. Such as parents of children and people living in Philadelphia in general. The policy that has been put in place is 16-18 10pm during the school year and 11 pm during the summer. 15-14 9pm during the school year and 8pm during the summer. And fro 13 and under 8pm during the school year and 9 during the summer. Although the curfew seems like a good idea many people are against it.  This is because in order to enforce the curfew and distinguish the age difference children would need to carry around an I’d at all times. Otherwise how do you know how old they really are? This also brings about racial profiling giving police the opportunity to harass people whenever they feel they need to. The essential outcome will be based on a vote between the city council and I think Blonedel and Mayor Nutter will sway the vote.  The next meeting for city rules is November 30th 2011 at 10am, which I'm sure the curfew laws will be a big topic of discussion. I think I can influence parents and children. Because if kids start to change their act there will be no need for a curfew.

SCOTUS Blog Case: US vs. Jones

In US vs. Jones, the court was investigating whether it was legal or not, for the FBI to without a warrant or permission, put a GPS on Jone's Jeep. He was a suspected drug dealer, he was sentenced to life in prison.

"1. Whether the warrantless use of a GPS trackingdevice on respondent’s vehicle to monitor its movementson public streets violated the Fourth Amendment.

2. Whether the government violated respondent’sFourth Amendment rights by attaching the GPS tracking device to his vehicle without a valid warrant and without his consent"

So, the police attached a GPS-tracker on his car, in order to track the location on the streets. The court argued that it is not illegal to monitor cars on public streets, if a car is parked on a public street it is not private. Jone's argued that it is not what the police obtained, but how they did it. Jone's argument was whether they were allowed search him or not. After the court case, it came down to the fact that he was always on public streets. That being the case, he warranted his privacy unless he was parked on private property. Another defense was that ten years ago this would've been a bigger operation, but because of social networking, you allow people to monitor you all the time, so why can't the police. I believe that Jones will lose, because the government really didn't do anything. They turned a stakeout, into an easier, less expensive operation.

My lobbying topic was curfew. This year would have to be a bad year in my point of view because, as a underage minor, the city has decided to make the curfew earlier "due to the increase of violence" with flash mobs. For the government, this year would be considered a good year because they successful passed a law regarding the curfew problem.
The text of the actual bill is here

To change this law or correct this law, citizens and voters are essential to this law. However the people essential to this problem when the voters do not come through the government officials like the commissioner and mayor.

This article may be true but there are other precautions to correct this problem. I think stricter penalties against their parents are in order with these strict curfew changes. I believe that this curfew change isn't going to be affective against these flash mobs. They have made the curfew earlier before and the flash mob have ceased to go down.

Possible good allies to help solve this curfew issue are the citizens of philadelphia who have conflict with this new curfew. We could first make a petition to boycott the bill. I could influence some of the youth around me to discourage flash mobs or not to attend a mob.

Being a Bee

Kilah Kemp

Being a bee is not always as easy as it may seem, you probably thinnk being a bee is just loads of friends, you get to meet the queen and all the honey you can eat, but there are bad parts one you are very, very tiny you got people always trying get you watch out because the right SWAT from a human can kill you instantly.  I am Important, and I am smart and I am the kindest person you will ever meet. But don’t bee fooled by my small size my heart is as big as the world. I am a little bee but my stinger pacts a punch. I have always been the smallest bee in the hive but I am the biggest when it comes to IMAGINATION. I always dreamed of a world outside of this hive all the people I can meet I the flowers I can pollinate all the honey I can help make. I want to be the first bee to go to the moon. I want to see the stars; I want to go wherever whenever. It’s just little ole me the smallest honeybee. I haven’t even gone through beeberty yet. I can’t BUZZ correctly my stinger isn’t even fully developed yet. But one day I will get there I will be a big bee in the small little hive. I believe in myself and I am not going to let any one stop me, I am imaginative I am the best darn bee you ever saw and I am going to continue to be that bee forever. I’m not going to even let the queen stop me. I want to be on TV. I want to be the first bee actor ever to be on broad way or the Hollywood walk of fame. I want to be important and I am important. I am imaginative something most people know nothing of. Until I get bigger I will imagine and I will be little ole me the smallest honeybee.

In this Slide I choose these images because I feel they represent me. Such as the Atom image in far right corner. I choose this because i enjoy science. I also choose the Playstation icon because i enjoy video games. In the Middle I wrote "live life to the fullest" that is just one of the mottos i live by. The second one says "Be yourself no matter what". I wrote these mottos because they help get through my daily life. On the right and left corners at the top are my favorite music groups. Also the image on the far right top corner has money and hearts, something I also base my daily life on. The other images are just my favorite stores to shop at when I am at the mall. To top it all off I wrote Science leadership academy in fancy to show how much I love this school.

Lobbying Post #3

For my lobbying topic, this is not a good year. I feel like youths are still bending the curfew rules and parents do not care much because if they did, they would be sure their children are in by 9pm. I am not disappointed by the face that it isn't a good year for this law because the law is too strict. For most teens, at 9pm is when they get that time to themselves to finally get out of the house and what this law is saying is that they will not be able to hang out. YES, I think there should be curfew laws but a 9pm curfew is outrageous. I do not feel in anyway bad about how this law is being ignored. I do not really see any officials who are so much for my lobbying idea which means I may  possibly have to talk to an official and get my idea out there and find others who agree. As listed in my last blog, there are a few officials who are on this curfew committee who may possibly be able to help me but Mayor Nutter is probably the one I would really need to talk to and get this idea into his head since he is the biggest enforcer of this law. A couple people are working on the curfew lobbying topic but I'm not too sure if their ideas are like mines. One of them says there should not be a curfew law which I am in the middle about but maybe we could work together and share ideas. I feel like I can influence the youth and parents to uphold their responsibilities which is to make sure children are in the house by 12:30pm every day.  The next meeting for city rules is November 30th 2011 at 10am which I'm sure the curfew laws will be a big topic of discussion.

M.B.Z. vs. Clinton

Whether courts can enforce a federal statute governing how the Secretary of State is to record the birthplace of American citizens on passports and related documents; and whether a federal law instructing the Secretary of State, if requested to do so, to record the birthplace of U.S. citizens born in Jerusalem as Israel interferes with the President's authority under the Constitution to recognize foreign nations. Some facts about this is even though Israel was declared a state in 1948, the U.S. government has declined to recognize Jerusalem as the capital, deeming this a question to be resolved through diplomacy. In 2002, Congress passed a law that provided that "for purposes of the registration of birth … or issuance of a passport of a United States citizen born in the city of Jerusalem, the Secretary (of State) shall, upon request … record the place of birth as Israel." A passport is not today considered a diplomatic statement; it's an identification of a person in order to enable him to travel abroad. The petitioner in the case, M.B.Z., was born in Jerusalem to U.S.-citizen parents in 2002.  Although his parents asked the State Department to designate Israel as their son’s place of birth on his passport, it declined to do so despite Congress’s command to the contrary. When the parents took the issue to the courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit dismissed their claim on the ground that it raised a nonjusticiable political question:  the court of appeals explained that the “judiciary has no authority to order the Executive Branch to change the nation’s foreign policy” with respect to whether Jerusalem is part of Israel.

Police are not enforcing laws and parents are still not taking responsibility for their children’s actions. This isn’t a good year in areas of Philadelphia because of this problem. As of now many elected officials have indicated that they are trying to figure out a solution for this problem without stepping their boundaries. Many people protest that parents are the only ones who can be accountable for this and the government is starting to become too personal when it comes to their lives. This law was signed by Mayor Nutter on November 14, 2011 and many people are not pleased with this. Many believe that we should be more focused on our economy and money for these children to help keep them out of trouble, not curfew.

The problem here is, how can you stop poverty? Where to start? Many people believe that in order to stop poverty, and violence is to educate and inspire many children, young adults and even adults. About a year ago, I emailed people who worked for ANNA C. VERNA about finding solutions to this problem. The ONLY answer I was given was, “we cannot force parents to do their job, we cannot force our morals onto someone else’s household. But we can give these children a better education.” After, I decided to go to South Philadelphia high school and talk to the special education teacher, Mrs. DeAngelo-Leary. There she interviewed many students and asked them about their views on life. Many replied that there isn’t anything beyond the world they live in (living in poverty, getting pregnant etc.) Many of them attended South Philadelphia High because no one really cared about their children whereabouts or education.

According to philly.com Many educators received constant pressure and were urged by administrators to not report any incidents that occur in schools. This is part of the problem. Many people aren't willing to take responsibility. Some people decide to handle situations differently in different schools, therefore it makes it difficult to tackle the situation and fix it.

There is nothing we can do about this situation beside promote education, and try to point in the correct direction. We can only be a positive influence and try to inspire these children and young adults to be something or someone better.

Lobbying Post #3

My lobbying topic, The Patriot Act, has had a pretty interesting year. Earlier this year The New York Times wrote about how Congress voted to have extensions made to three provisions of the law. And what was passed within them.
Which you can see more of here:
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/subjects/u/usa_patriot_act/index.html

But just recently though The Patriot Act was talked about during the Republican Presidential Debate. Mostly by Newt Gungrich and Ron Paul. Newt Gungrich saying ""If you're trying to find somebody who may have a nuclear weapon they are trying to bring into an American city, you need every tool available. The dangers are literally that great." to Ron Paul stating "I have a personal belief that you never have to give up liberty for security. You can still provide security without sacrificing our Bill of Rights,".

Which you can see more of here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeS1bGw0RdM

It was interesting watching the Presidential Debate and listening to them talk about their views on The Patriot Act. I saw how different most of their views were significantly different from each other and got me thinking that, depending on who gets elected president, the election itself is going to have a huge effect on The Patriot Act and what will happen to it. So lately The Patriot Act has been getting a lot of attention and I do not expect it to fade anytime soon.

After school programs are being shut down and closed because of budget cuts to schools and school districts around the country forcing children to seclude themselves from active play and stay inside. There have been many movements around the country to reverse this trend of physical play being boring and something of the past with help from programs like play60 which is involved with the NFL and has been directly been given help by Michele Obama and Jill Biden who have made progress in getting more and more school districts across the country involved in getting these programs back up and running so that more and more children can have access to outdoor spaces and places to play rather than being inside; this also correlates to mrs. Obamas idea of having a healthier America and a America without obesity

My issue still stays at the idea of sports and after school programs in general being cut to save money for the school and how these programs are crucial in getting and keeping kids active but also keeping children from getting in trouble outside of school. At this point I would have to directly speak with people involved in programs like play60 and other organizations that are around and trying to get these programs back but also trying to address the issue of children being active and staying active. I wanted to directly focus on schools in communities where there isn't much happening outside or around the school because in more developed neighborhoods you don't see these programs being cut because the community and the area is doing fine itself particularly the school system but by looking at school systems in lets say small communities or Philadelphia for example because of all the budget cuts we can see and address the problem directly.

Querida Mariedy Bastidas

Buenos días , ¿Cómo está? Soy bien. Me llamo Amy Chen y tengo quince años.

Amy Chen

Lobbying Pro Patient Protection and Affordable Care Law #3

hcan_480

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Law is coming into play more
and more as pieces of the law continue to pass. As of Oct. 1st, The
Independent Payment Advisory Board, a group dedicated to finding ways to
rid the medicare system of waste and making it more efficient, began to
receive funding. While in the coming year, many new affects of the law
will begin to come in to play, such as promoting health providers to
group for more efficient care and requiring  government health
organizations to record statistic on racial and economic groups
receiving health care in order to better organize their efforts. A
timeline of the implementation of the act can be found in the link here.

Having been dubbed "Obamacare" the law has been receiving relatively
positive feedbacks amongst the public. In response, cnn polls have resin
in support towards the law although 52% still want to repeal. This is a
6% drop from the last poll and from a high of 59% last march. As more
affect of the law are being felt are beginning to judge it fairly. Most
people still don't know what's in the bill as most are blinded by the
heavy allegations of it might not being constitutional.
