Lobbying Topic #1

In the city of Philadelphia, the percentage of African American males & females incarcerated is gradually climbing. 70% of the inmates in Pennsylvania on death row are of african-american decent, and there are roughly 85,000 people in this state alone jailed. 50% of them Are african american. The topic I chose to Lobby is the african american incarceration rate. The reason I wanted to research, and monitor this topic is because Ive been involved in some of the movements to change it, such as the Saving Our Boys seminar, the Think & Grow Rich conference, Daddy University, and the Young Men's Conference. The purpose of these events/conferences was to reach young boys between the ages of 10-17 to connect them positive adult leaders who could push them in a positive direction, to keep them from becoming lost to the jail system and the dangers of the streets. So far, in Philadelphia, people have been planning and establishing these events at different locations such as Benjamin Franklin High School, the School District Building, even at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Some of the people involved are Howard John of C.E.O. of S.E.I.L. (Success through Education, Inspiration and Leadership), Michele Lawrence, of Call me KING, and Michele Jackson of Positive Impact. Each of these leaders has helped empower the young african americans around the city if Philadelphia with knowledge and drive to achieve new heights in their lives. There are not really any people opposing it, but a lot of people promote, and accept it. The main point of this topic is to show the change that is proposed to fix the incarceration rate of african Americans, & for people to see the movement that is happening within the community. There is no pending legislation, but there needs to be some type of Law that fixates to not only the black community, but teens at a whole to keep them from getting in trouble, or there needs to be some rally to get teens into doing positive things and staying out of trouble to keep them from BEING incarcerated.

Fracking: Blog Post #2

The first people I need in my lobbying project/assignment are the State officials, since fracking deals with state. My Pennsylvania House Representative is John P. Sabatina Jr., my Pennsylvania Senate is Christine M. Tartaglione, and Governor Corbett.

John P. Sabatina Jr. is a resident of Rhawnhurst in Northeast Philadelphia. He was elected in 2005 to the 174th District of The House of Representatives and re-elected 2 more times; in 2006 and 2010. His legislative priorities are crime prevention, fighting problems in communities and promoting urban renewal through economic, cultural and neighborhood development. Though he may not have been 100% involved in fracking problems and such, he has voted yes to many acts such as "Establishing a Natural Gas Severance Act" (SB-1155), "Clean Fuels and Energy Independence Act (HB-1202), "Other Energy Incentives" (HB-1200) and many other acts dealing with energy and the positives of using it and such. Running by my lobbying topic and fracking, I'm sure he would help me in what I am trying to accomplish. I actually feel like he would really get along with me and really have many good ideas in my lobbying process.

My Pennsylvania Senate, Christine Tartaglione, is also a Philadelphia resident. In 1994, Senator Tartaglione became the fifth woman in state history to win election to the State Senate. Tartaglione has supported legislation for quality childcare, affordable healthcare, quality education, mental health/retardation programs, law enforment and emergency personnel, protecting workers jobs, and much more. She works in Senate District 2. As for fracking in the marcellus shale, Tartaglione was angry and called out the taxing of fracking companies, and how they were using the Delaware and Pennsylvania loophole to avoid paying taxes on certain operations. She called out to get rid of the loophole and even stated that this is a true violation. She seems like she would be a great person to talk to about lobbying against fracking in Pennsylvania. I feel like we would get along because she seems like she will fight for what she thinks is right and I am sort of the same way.

Lobbying Issue: Funding for Philly Youth Poetry Movement (Phase Two)

For Phase Two of my Lobbying Project, I found that since I live in district 3 of the city, Jannie L. Blackwell is my city council representative. I found that she has been an advocate the youth and underprivileged kids since she has been appointed. She has tons of experience in politics and has helped build relationships between communities. Her own interests and focus lies within the community. Her ultimate goal is to help make Philadelphia better as a whole. Since she suceded Lucien Blackwell in 1992, she has been the voice of the youth that cannot speak up for themselves and tries to support them in anyway. Just yesterday, a city wide curfew had been passed into law for minors that are out past certain times. She was the only one who voted against it along with many people in the city.
Another one of the people in legislation that I can talk to is Mayor Nutter. He is a prominent supporter of PYPM and sees just ow influencial PYPM really is. He has high hopes for this non-profit and for our success in our lives. He felt truly touched by how this group of young people can come together and be creative, feel safe, feel comfortable, and share their ideas, thoughts, and etc.

Lobbying Blog Post #2: Fracking

The main people I would need to lobby to are my State officials. Specifically my House Representative: Representative Rosita Youngblood, my Senator, Leanne Washington and Governor Corbett. Each of these people have different views and interests so I'd have to proceed differently with each.

Rosita Youngblood was born in Philadelphia and elected as representative to the 198th District in 1994. She is a chairwoman in the house Gaming Oversight Committee and introduces issue-specific legislation. While she is mostly interested in legislation concerning domestic violence, welfare, health services, personal insurance and property tax provisions, she has voted yes to bills like SB 1155, HB 1200 and other clean energy bills. I have no doubt she would help me lobby against fracking. However, if I needed an "in" with her, I would talk to her about experiences she may have had in Philadelphia and how mine are similar or different.

Senator Leanne Washington has the most interesting biography of any of my representatives. She was a teen mom, a high school dropout, and a victim of domestic violence. She served in the House of Representatives for 12 years before becoming the Senator to the 4th district. She, like Youngblood, is primarily interested in enhancing community; she's interested in assistance for domestic violence, and social security insurance for disabled foster children. I think she would also be a good candidate to talk to about my lobbing topic. She co-sponsored SB 596, a bill creating a fund for citizens with contaminated well water caused by fracking.

The last, and most challenging of my representatives would be Governor Tom Corbett. He was elected to office in 2011. His top priorities while in office are to reduce the government budget, improving the economy and, in that same vein, jobs. I say he is the most challenging because he has been a big advocator of fracking and it's abundance of jobs. There was a bit of unrest because he was sponsored during his election by some Gas Companies. However, he has recently made an Act that would give counties in PA the right to make fees on fracking. An "in" I have with Corbett is that he went to college in Annville, which is where my grandparents live. He, also, worked in a highschool for some time so I could talk with him about how unique SLA is.

These are my three representatives that could help me with my lobbying project. I am generally confident that I could get good results from speaking to them about my topic. Which, is very helpful to know.

ZAYD BUT BLASE!

Screen Shot 2011-11-02 at 5.06.21 PM

Though it does not look like the person that I wanted to draw, I tried my best and as long as I tried, I'm satisfied. I do what I can put on stage and this is what I'm proud of. I was actually concentrated on making it look like a human and nothing else. I kept focused in achieving what I set for myself in the beginning. I did not know I can draw a whole entire body figure and I doubted myself in the beginning and had no hope. But I learned how to try new things and go for it because life is full of challenges and I set myself to a challenge and I fell great with the outcome.

To start off, I did not know whom to draw. I think it makes a big deal for me because to be honest, I was not able to draw with the class on a model but rather chose a friend of mine whom was awfully too kind to participate and drew him. With that being said, the pose was a major factor for me. I felt as though I wanted to draw him at a different view rather than a front view. I felt as though, I can accomplish more when drawing a side view but can also put a challenge for myself. So I used a pastel and normally when I draw in general, I would use either a sharpie or a pencil but not pastel. I never really worked with them. I wanted to start of light, just in case I messed up on something. When I was satisfied with my sketch, I darken my lines to have definition. I then used a lighter green color than the color I used and used it as a high-lighter for some edges to be open and noticeable in my drawing.

While working on this assignment, I grew confidence in myself, that I can draw what I please if I put my mind to it. During the whole process of drawing this figure, I learned how to shade and highlight important details and I'm still learning. I like shading and highlighting in pictures to show definition and the right exposure that it needs to have.

Smurf Sam Boyd (Figure Drawing)

Although this was an assignment meant to look identical to the model, mine came out a little more of a caricature. I started to draw the upper body then the lower body, that's why it came out so awkward looking because they are not proportional. I really like how she looks like a cartoon, although that wasn't the goal, my picture makes me feel like I drew what Sam Boyd feels like, not so much looks like. My little yellow piece of charcoal was my favorite because they had a really nice flow to them when I started drawing with them.

Why Do I Write

Why Do I Write

If only the feeling of true self-recognition could be put into meaning,

Into a splatter of exploding visuals,

Into a serenade beautiful sounds,

Into a parallel reality where I am one with my inner parasite,

Maybe then, I could begin to explain the reason

Why I write.

This parasite within…

And how exactly do I coexist

with this symbiotic parasite?

or is it a parasitic symbiote?

Or is there not a difference?

But…

When I write…

Am I channeling it?

Or is it channeling I?

I do not know…

BUT I STILL WRITE.

When the omnipresent universe decides to falsify my reality,

Where do I turn?

As if hope-ridden tears aren’t enough to satisfy its lust for pain,

Where else can I go?

Because seemingly, placing a barbed barrier stability and I won’t suffice-

What do I do?

I write.

I do not know why…

BUT I STILL WRITE.

Perhaps,

These hands of mine hold the words that refuse to roll off my tongue.

Perhaps,

These hands of mine hold the bittersweet idealisms trapped deep within my heart.

Perhaps…

These hands of mine hold the link to myself and the world-

Lobbying Topic Part 1:

My lobbying topic is based on curfew and the consequences that come along with it if someone doesn’t obey what needs to be done. I want to do this as my lobbying topic because those who believe that curfew doesn’t matter is messing up the fun for those who choose to be out late be can act responsibly. I also don’t believe that is fair that the parents have to pay a fee for the child that is being picked up for curfew. If not fair to those who are actually not flashing mobbing, but just hanging out have a good normal time. Just because every cop or adult wants to believe that every child is not out causing trouble, shouldn’t stop those who have self -control. I know this interest me the most because I’m 18 but all my friends are not, so some of our plans can even be followed through.

The supporters for this lobbying idea I believe should be the positives young adults that simply feel the same way. However they people who would be against this, would be cops and probably other adults who believes that these kids are only out here to start trouble. Then other people that will be against this is the children that are actually apart of the flash mob and feel differently about what should be done. I really believe something should be done because it’s not fair to the children who are being label as someone bad and they are actually being a positive individual.

Lobbying Blog Post 2: Clean Chemicals Act

I am lobbying for the Clean Chemicals Act of 2011. Currently, the bill is in the Senate, in committee. With a bit of research, I found out that my bill is currently in the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. None of the representatives from my state are in this committee. The chair is Barbara Boxer, a democrat from California. I looked at her voting record, and it was clear she would be for the bill. Right now, the bill is in the subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics, and Environmental Health. Luckily for my bill, the chair of that subcommittee is Frank R. Lautenberg, the New Jersey representative who first introduced the bill. The minority "ranking members" of committee and subcommittee are republicans from the midwest. Generally, their voting histories make me think that they will be against a powerful bill to control chemical production because it could affect industry. They have no reason to listen to me, because I am not a constituent – nor do I have any ties to their states. Because they are the minority, however, I still hope that my bill can make it to Senate.

My representatives in Senate are Bob Casey and Pat Toomey.

Bob Casey, on his website, states that "as a Senator from Pennsylvania, I am committed to protecting the environment, preserving our natural treasures, and safeguarding the health of our families," and states that energy and the environment are among his priorities. He says that he is strongly against fracking, and has cosponsored one bill that would "close big oil tax loopholes". However, based on the list of legislation he has sponsored and cosponsored, his priorities seem to lie much more with veterans and education. He has four daughters, all of whom are around my age, and he plays basketball – so I would definitely be able to start a conversation with him.

Pat Toomey, on the other hand, will certainly not want the bill to be passed. One of his slogans is "More Jobs, Less Government" (see image below). Because of this, he will certainly not want more restrictions on companies that could be producing more and hiring more. He even introduced the Employment Protection Act of 2011, which would make the EPA "consider the impact on employment levels and economic activity" before any regulatory action. The Clean Chemicals Act is certainly in conflict with this bill. I looked for interests he and I might share, and found nothing. I am uncertain how I will be able to argue for this bill against someone who so clearly is opposed to anything of the kind.

If the bill gets through Senate, it will go to the House of Representatives. There, my representative if Chaka Fattah (see district map below). Looking through his legislative record, it is clear that his priority lies with education – from early childhood care to college funding. Howeve, he also sponsored the Clean Energy Act of 2010, which would have supported research into nuclear energy and other forms of renewable power. Based on this, I think he is highly likely to support the Clean Chemicals Act of 2011. Because of his interest in education, especially public education, I would definitely try to start a conversation by talking to him about my school.

For the post part, my representatives and the people on the bill's committee look like they'll support it. However, the opponents of the bill look quite immovable: Toomey, with whom I have very little in common, and the various Senators who are strongly opposed to the bill and do not have any reason to listen to some girl from Pennsylvania.

Scotus Blog Case Judulang v. Holder

The case I am talking about today is Judulang v. Holder. In this case the United Stats wants to remove a lawful permanent resident who has lived here since 1974, because he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1989. The main thing they reference is the former section 212© of the Immigration and Nationality Act 8, which allows a noncitizen to come into the country even with a criminal conviction. But ever since a case called Francis v. INS made section 212© able to be used for lawful permanent residents and non citizens trying to get into the country. But when congress felt that they needed change, in 1996 they repealed section 212© but made it so that anyone who would've been able to get it at the time can still use section 212© to their advantage. Since Judulang was convicted in 1989 and he met the requirement for section 212©.  For some reason the immigration denied the wavier and told Judulang he had to leave the country. The board of Immigration and the ninth circuit(which also handles immigration) agreed with the board of immigration. This could mean anybody in Judulangs' situation would not be eligible from removal when convicted.

The constitutional question that comes into play here is one that it seems like a lot of people in the court and outside of the court are confused about and that is the tenth amendment. The tenth amendment is the amendment that so closely deals with immigration but when I researched more the constitution never discusses immigration it brings in the concept of immigration. Also to clarify the tenth says that this would be a state problem to deal with so I don't entirely know why this case is being challenged on the grounds of the constitution.

The main argument that Judulang had was that before the ruling by the BIA in 2005 in Matter of Blake and Matter of Brieva-Perez, he or any lawful permanent resident could apply for relief for any conviction even one such as voluntary manslaughter. He tried to get the law rationally reviewed under the Equal Protection clause but could not. He also says that when they ruled and change their practices it was contradictory and represents a retroactive change in the law.

The only real arguments that the U.S. made in this case were that section 212© relief is only available when there is a similarity between the reason they are being deported and the reason they are being removed. They also tried to invalidate his case against the board showing a change in law and that it should be reviewed.

I am almost sure that this case will go in favor Judulang because the U.S. has minimal success in convincing the supreme court justices of anything and also the supreme justices seem to ask questions that seem look in favor of Judulang.

Why I Write

Why do I write?
Is it to tell my story?
Or to reveal the story of another?
I write to show the fantasy
And the writing on the walls
The stories of the bloodstained hands
And the bullets flying through castle walls
I write to show the truth
And see through murky lies
Recalling the horrors of a war
And the bullets that grazed my head.
The collapse of the U.S and the U.S.S.R. alike
The fall of the Berlin Wall to the great Stock Market Crash
And even the plague and famine
That spread across all lands.
I write to show the story
Of the conquered and the desolate
The stories of the many
While I live on through them

Tu vs. Ud

The words Tú and Ud mean the same thing; "and you". The difference between them is one is for a formal situation and the other for an informal situation.
Tú= informal (eee-to)
Ud= formal (oo-sted)
These terms are used for the fowling phrases and more;
¿Cómo estás tú?

¿Cómo está ud?
¿Cómo te llamas tú?
¿Cómo se llama ud?
¿De dónde eres tú?
¿De dónde es ud?
