Odyssey 5 paragraph essay
This was an essay I did that was built from a thesis written on a subject from the book The Odyssey. I was particularly exited to do this assignment because we held several discussions about this book. I created a thesis that proved an intresting topic. I completed it using the template Mr.Kay created for us to write them by. It was easy for me to write this because I had things I wanted to adress that I couldnt in class discussions.
Heroes should present a good image to follow. However, Odysseus in the book the odyssey uses his cunning and masculine brawn to get through in life. Odysseus’ actions in the book make him a prostitute. Many times he is used as a toy when he is captive by nymphs. When they are finished with him they pay him gratitude, gifts and useful advice as reward for his services. Not only that but he is almost guaranteed to beg one of his captives for a way out, and often that comes down to sex. He disconnects himself from his family and enjoys life at sea with the many people he meets.
A case after case, Odysseus was rewarded for his worldly deeds for each of the goddesses he was captured by. Circe, the nymph, had turned Odysseus’ men into swine and stranded his men for a moment. However, they stayed at Circe’s for one year, not that long considering he stayed many times longer at other places. While they were there, he gave sexual favors and turned his men back into humans again. And so in return, she gave him useful advice for the sea and food for his journey home too. Essentially, she used him for his body and then paid him for it.

The first time in the book were we first meet Odysseus, he is crying and sobbing on an island of the nymph with lovely braids, Calypso, about missing his dear home. She held him captive after he was ship wrecked and had been helping him get along in life. While he was there he gave sexual favors to Calypso. Later after this part of the book he mentions that calypso was better than his only wife any day. It was clear that Odysseus in some way took pleasure in his time stranded on the island. When it was time for Odysseus to leave as Calypso was warned, she gave him supplies for his trip back to his home. It was no whine and bread, she dressed him, built him a float and made sure he was safe from dying.
Finally, it should be most degrading and horrible, for an almost international hero to fall at the feet of women begging for mercy. Not just any hero, a cunning, masculine and renowned hero to not be able to fend for himself. It should be imperative for him to support and be able to help himself. Time and time again in the book me as a person is very disappointed in him because of his ability to persuade by begging. A true hero should cope with circumstances with tools like cunning
