A student at SLA
Submitted by Leilanie Jimenez on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 13:53.
I am a student at Science Leadership Academy (SLA), and in my English class I have been reading Hamlet. If you don't know what is about, Hamlet is a play by Shakespeare. It is a play full of intriguing crimes, love, cheating and lying. It is a very interesting book. The way we interpret the play has been a fun experience for my classmates and me. We have been doing skits of insults in Shakespeare language (this was before we started reading the book), we have also been taking quizzes on the passage that we had for homework that day. The quizzes consist on many different quotes from the Act and scene that was for homework. We have to translate that quote into modern language and explain the importance of each quote and how it is going to influence the play in the next act/scene. Also we have been watching important parts of the movie, to see how different directors choose to place the characters in their movies and to watch the way the actor reflected what Hamlet, the queen, Polonius etc. were feeling in the book.

What do you want learn?
I want to learn to use technology better like building them and taking them apart and putting them back together, or how to help people more. I like to be around technology, but I also like to help people like with medicine and such. I want to learn how to work in a hospital or at least a pharmacy. I would love to help people or be helpful to others in any way. I also like to help people out with anything i can possible can, but i love helping other people and telling them about things. I also am interest in robotics so maybe i can do something with that since i find it so fascinating.
What skills do you want to build?
People skills because im really shy when I meet new people, but when I get to know them im very open.
What careers would you like to know about?
Doctors, but im scared of seeing a lot of blood because it makes me feel sad each time i see it and makes me feel lonely so i hate the sight of too much blood at one time when it free on the ground.

Q3 Algebra Benchmark
Submitted by McKelly Timothy on Tue, 04/01/2008 - 17:12.
This is my Q3 algebra benchmark. We had to create graphs based on what we want to be when we grow up and how much money they make. Thw purpose of this benchmark is to understand linear relationships, collect data, and analyze our findings. We had to find one set of data with positive correlation (as the x increases the y increases) and one set with negative correlation (as one variable increases, the other decreases). The attatchments below will give you more information:

Mansa Musa & Mali
Submitted by Emma Connell on Tue, 12/18/2007 - 20:51.
For history our assigned benchmark was to make a keynote on Mali and Mansa Musa.
I researched the history, geography, religion, and salt and gold trade. For Mansa Musa i talked about his Hajj to Mecca and the effect of it.
If i could change one thing it would be MY time management. I had alot of time in class to work on it but i didn't use it wisely. I still finshed my project on time i just had to cram a lot of my research and that made me stress out.

1) In the assignment, we had to plan and organize a dinner for king Tut. We had to do the invitation, the menu, the seating plan, the description of the ritual of the Pharoah will perform, and the press release.
2) I completed the part where you had to do a press release. Doing the press release I had to organize an announcement to tell the people of Egypt that the Pharoah was coming to their town for dinner.
3) If I was to do this project again, I would make the font better and have more about the Pharoah.

This quarter our class was focusing on making a good thesis statment and an interesting paper. We were assigned to make up a thesis statment about the book we were reading, The Odyssey. My theses was, People praise the god's not because of their personality traits or their physical characteristics, but because they fear they almost limitless power. I got a 90/100 on the assignment. If I were to do this project again, I would have managed my time better.
Yeast Lab
Submitted by Emma Connell on Tue, 12/18/2007 - 18:17.
For our bio-chemistry class we were assigned to MAKE OUR OWN expierement for the becnhmark. Before making our own we did a run through step by step. After our first expierment went well the class felt comfortable of doing the expierement we were assigned in groups and to design and expierement to. my group and i decided we would do an experiment to see the change of the CO2 output by using baking soda, Pepsi, yeast, water, and sugar. To see the changes of the CO2 output we used balloons. We waited to see if the balloons inflated or not. We would record all our data putting it together as a lab report. Our lab came out very well. i was pleased with our grade.
If i had to change anything on this lab i would plan a bit better and be more cautios. We had an excellent idea but we needed to check if all the materials would work efficently. another small problem we came across was brekaing the balloons and pouring some of the materials. we missed the beaker twice and roke the balloons a few times too. but after some good trys we got it and or lab came out splendid.
Q1 benchmark
Submitted by Marshall Johnston on Tue, 12/18/2007 - 18:15.
We studied three main pharo's of ancient Egypt and we were assigned to do a project on king Tut. We were to arrange a dinner goo enough to satisfy him. We worked in groups of four. I was assigned to create a realistic menu. I looked up what foods they had back in those times and put the rarest of them on the menu in order to impres him. If I were to do the project again, I would have been better on the deadlines. We got in the final project on time but we were a little behind on the small stuff.
