In history class we have been studying Jared Diamond’s book Collapse and have been talking about his Five Point Framework. This Five Point Framework that he talks about has to do with five different things that can lead to a society eventually collapsing. I have decided to take his Five Point Framework and apply it to two different countries, Japan and Israel to find out how likely they are to collapse.

The first of the five points Diamond mentions is Environmental Destruction. There are several different things that could be meant by environmental destruction such as pollution or simply depletion of resources. With Japan I see the country of having slight risks of this because they produce a lot of pollution so it could lead to their eventual collapse so I rate Japan at about a 6 out of 10. As with Israel I believe that they will be facing trouble with destroying their water supplies and that could lead to their eventual collapse I rate Israel at an 8 out of 10.

The Second of the five points is Climate Change which is something everyone in the world is experiencing currently because of Global Warming. Japan has already started making plans for helping with climate change and trying to fix what they can but seeing as they are an island and surrounded by water the chances are that if climate changes effect the water levels around their island then they will start to sink so I rate them at a 5 out of 10. As for Israel they have also decided to make an effort in helping with climate change, seeing as they are a developing country and still are trying to help with climate change I believe that they will have a small chance to collapse because of climate change but not a large one so I think around a 2 out of 10.

The Third of the five points is Hostile Neighbors; this is something that certain areas have a big problem with because they could be attacked easily by their neighbors. For Japan, They have a high risk with this because they have some bad relations with nations like Korea and it would be pretty easy to get attacked by them so for this I give them an 8 out of 10. With Israel, they are currently having conflicts with Lebanon and they have another hostile neighbor as well called Syria, with there being several different neighbors around them and there are a lot of conflicts that go on between them I give Israel an 8 out of 10 as well.

The Fourth of the five points is Friendly Trade Partners, this being something that mostly all nations need in order for their economy to prosper. Japan has a really good trade with the US along with their new top trade partner China, so unless something goes wrong with their relations I give Japan a 2 out of 10. With Israel it is a similar feat considering they have just recently made trade partners with the US for fuel, I read before that they had come across a large amount of fuel and that they would be able to become exporters so I guess this has helped their trade relations as well I give them a 2 out of 10 also.

The Fifth and final point of the five points is Society’s Response to its environmental problems. This is something that is important because if the society that has problems just panics and loses its head over the issues it’s facing then it will easily collapse. With Japan its government takes international responsibility to conserve and protect the environment. So for their risk I give them about a 3 out of 10. For Israel, they have experienced a large amount of environmental issues in the past and just recently have started taking steps to trying to fix these problems. As I see it they are on their way to start recovering from any damage that they have faced so I give them a 4 out of 10.

These two countries are very interesting to study when looking at them side by side. In some aspects such as hostile neighbors and friendly trade partners they have very similar results but on the other had with things like environmental destruction and climate change they have a some what greater difference from each other. Looking at the two countries they both seem to have strong trade partners but at the same time they both have hostile neighbors that could attack them. Seeing the things that they have in common and the things that are so different about them is really interesting it makes me want to find out more about other countries in comparison to these two.

Bill Tracking 11/23/09

All of the bills I have been tracking havn't made any movement so far. They can be expected to start having some progress again soon but until then I need to wait for them to start being put into motion.

Currently in the senate the healthcare bill that has been pushed through seems to be something that is one sided in the senate. It seems that the Democrats agree with the bill and think it should go through but the Republicans think that the bill is bad and think that it should be revised before going through. It seems that the public option is haveing problems staying in this version of the healthcare bill as well and that it seems to be the main reason that there is so much arguing over passing the bill.

EMcAninch_Bill_Tracking

The bills I have been following havn't made any progress as of right now but they seem like they will be shortly. Hopefully there will be some action with these bills soon because it is really boring waiting for them to start to move. If anyone would have a part from the executive branch in the progression of these bills it would probably be to sign off on them when they finally reach the President, Mayor or Governer's desk.

EMcAninch_Artist_Statement

For the first quarter of art I had some difficulties getting
started on a project that I felt I would be able to stay with and complete. I
didn’t really feel creative at the beginning of the quarter and didn’t get a
very good start at what I wanted to do. I believe that because of this I was
not able to finish the project that I started after I got inspired to do
something. But over all I believe that the project that I chose to do is really
going to turn out great once I finish it

For
the project that I started, I decided to do a combination of a lot of my
different pictures that I have sketched in my sketchbook over the quarter and
during my free time. For the project I took tracing paper and copied over each
of the different pictures I wanted to put into my piece. I got the idea when
looking at all of my different sketches that I had drawn over the quarter and I
started thinking that they would all look great together. After copying each
piece onto the tracing paper I am now going to take the combine pictures and
draw them again on a different piece of paper. After I am finished doing that I
will color it in using color pencils and it will then be mostly finished.

 I
believe that I chose to do this project because it revolves around something
that I find myself interested in. I have been sketching the characters of a
story that I made up for over a year now and still find myself amazed at the
progress that I have made while doing so. I find that each time I draw these
characters I am progressing a little bit farther in their development and I
feel as though even though they are just pictures on a paper that I am able to
feel their personality. I believe that by continuing to draw these pictures I
am able to bring these characters to life and it makes me passionate about
drawing.

10/26 Bill Tracking

None of my bills have had any movement as of yet. Everything seems pretty quiet with my bills.

Through the process of this bill, It seemed like all of the
people in the House of representatives and in the Senate thought that the idea
of having a government shutdown prevention act was a good idea but when it got
to the president at the time, who was Ronald Reagan, he decided to Veto the
bill and not allow it to become a law. That is what I have depicted in the
comic strip I created, I read that even though Reagan decided to veto the bill,
the Senate and House still voted and were able to over write the President’s
veto with a 2/3 vote to make the bill a law. It was enacted as a public law on September
tenth, 1982 number 97-257. I believe that this bill’s passage was a savior for
the people’s life because if the government were to shut down and wasn’t able
to operate properly anymore than neither would most of the economy and the
entire country would be a big mess. Pretty much, if this bill or other bills
had not become laws then there would probably end up being a lot of different
problems with the country and it would make a lot of problems for people who
are just trying to live their everyday lives. Some challenges that thwart the
creative process are trying to be creative and have fun but then having to
stick to the facts of history and making sure that you don’t make it inaccurate
in any way.

Bill Tracking

None of my bills have made any progress as of this past week. Everything has pretty much come to a stand still for me and it is getting really boring to go and see that there isn't any new progress on the bills that I have been following for the past few weeks. I hope to see some new progress on these bills again soon and find some new interesting things about the progress of the bills.

Bill Tracking

All of my bills have had a stand still for a while now and aren't seeing much action. I have started to wonder if they will move anywhere or if they will just sit there and die like some bills do. I can see how boring it can be to wait for the bills to actually start moving and making process. In all of my bills they all share common wording and similar things but they all are about different subjects so its kind of hard to compare them. They all seem to have similar wording in some parts and in others they are completely different.

American Government Bill

My U.S. congress bill is about funding for better boarder
control and to build a fence on the boarder between America and Mexico. So far
it has been referred to Committee and hasn’t done anything since. I believe
that it will move along n the near future but only time will tell. My State
bill is about establishing a national steel industry historic site here in
Pennsylvania. So far its been read twice and referred to committee. But nothing
has happened to it since. I believe that eventually something will happen and
it will continue to progress through the line but I don’t think it will make it
all the way.

Artist Statement #4

For this quarter I chose to create a painting of two different characters from an anime that I watch. It is of the Protagonist/ Antagonist named Light Yagami, and his rival and friend L. It was fun to create because I had to create it out of two different pictures because there wasn't one that included both character's faces half and half like I made it. on the left side is half of Light's face with his hair portrayed as being red, which happenes in the anime when he and L have a moment of rivalry and has a background of black behind him. Then on the right side is half of L's face with his hair and any shadows on him protrayed as being blue opposite of Light's red when they have a moment of rivalry in the show.

EMcAninch Artist Statement 2

When I first started this I decided to make something that I would be able to look at and be proud of. This is when I decided to create an eagle for the painting.  As I drew it I focused mostly on the eagle itself and tried to get it as detailed as possible and make it look like it was an actual picture of one. After I was finished drawing it I started to paint and was really happy with how the colors turned out with it.
