Engineering December Progress Blog #2

The experimenting has died down in a sense because everyone is getting ready to go on Winter Break. Currently, we are planning on doing further experiments relating to our sunlight angles. After break, we will more than likely redo the Clinometers experiments if we need better accuracy, or try another form of experiment if need be.

After performing our sunlight angle experiment with the Clinometers (I found out the proper name for them), we found the average sunlight angles. The average angle that sunlight hits our school from the West is 20°. The average angle East of our school is 30°. Using this data, we will know effective angles to set up solar panels on our schools roof so that we can potentially collect as much energy/power/electricity as possible to help towards making our school Green in the future.

We have come to an agreement in class on what type of experiment to perform. In order to find the sunlight angles, we will be doing an experiment based on our 9th grade Geometry projects. We will have a viewing tube attached to protractors with sting and weights. As we look up to see the tops of the buildings where sunlight, the weight will pull the string down and show us the angle at which sunlight hits our school. Each group will have their own viewing/angle device and use it to find the sunlight angles at several different points to get an average sunlight angle in the polar directions, east and west from our school.

Now, we are in the midst of finding where the sun strikes the school at different positions. We are discussing how to set up an experiment that will allow us to find the angles that sunlight hits SLA with relative accuracy. Since there are many other buildings around the school, many taller in fact, we know the sunlight angles will be different depending on where we look, so we are also discussing a way to address this in our experiments.

Mini Solar Panel Experiment Blog #2

Today, our group managed to greatly improve on our experiments from last class. We managed to further compare different potential sources of energy to the miniature solar panels. This was done by hooking up an ammeter to a grapefruit, then the solar panel, then a battery. We found that the battery was the best source of electricity, but we know that the solar panel would last much longer since it can get recharged very easily by the sun and won’t need to be replaced. Overall, I think our second class with the miniature solar panel turned out well.

Mini Solar Panel Experiment Blog #1

In Engineering class, we have started an experiment to see whether or not miniature sized solar panels could be useful and efficient to our class, and potentially the world. The group I was part of managed to compare the electricity potentially produced by the mini solar panel, versus that of a grapefruit. It turned out that the grapefruit gave off more electricity than the mini-solar panel, but this is more than likely because there was not a great multitude of light outside and the lights of the room were our main source for the panels. However, we will attempt to improve this upon our next class and try to achieve better results.

Open Letter to Barack Obama

11/5/08

Dear President Barack Obama,
I am very glad to see someone such as yourself come into the White house, especially in these troubled times. Just to get things straight, the fact that you are of African American origin is not a factor as to why I believe you are our country’s best choice right now. It is your policies and strategies that I believe will help get America back on its feet. On another note, I read the email Ralph Nader sent you attempting to expose your so-called cowardice. This has not shaken my view of you at all and only strikes me as a desperate cry from a dirty politician to start drama over a victorious candidate. But alas, let’s move on to why I am writing this letter.

Interview on Election Day in My Neighborhood

Down at the Graduate Hospital entrance (my neighborhood polling building) on 18th and South, things were different than others might expect. There was no immense crowd in a seemingly endless line, but voters streaming in and out one by one through the open doors. I sat down with Teri Connor to get the scoop on the election experience at the Graduate.

Othello Q4 Benchmark Blog #2

My group and I are just about finished our script. Myself and I think another of my team members have found lines from all the acts and scenes we were assigned. We have them up on the Google Docs, and the rest of my group is just about finished with their acts and scenes as well.

There have been no additional difficulties so far relating to my group and their ability to work together. Our situation has been pretty much a complete success. No one wastes time or gets off task. We talk about what needs to be discussed, then we get done what needs to be done. Everyone is working effectively and efficiently, so there are no problems with my group, as far as I can see.

When adding lines to the Google Docs, my group searches for the quotes that can show off our theme without actually saying it, as well as give hints to the storyline and move it forward. We try to get the juicy quotes that let you easily know what's going on at whatever point of the story the quote is from. For editing, we try to pick out what is unnecessary in the quotes/lines we find and try to get to the point without too much extra information. My group picks tha lines apart and then puts them back together in a way that can be more understandable to the audience and not bore them or leave them stumped.

Now, after finding my lines and looking at those that my partners found, I do understand some of the secret jealousy and character edvelopment to a greater degree. I realized that Brabantio was jealous of Othello almost from the start, seeing as how his daughter was tempted by a "Moor" and not a noble man of Venice. He thinks just about anyone else would be a better choice for Desdemona, but that doesn't seem likely. Also, I've seen how Othello's jealousy was sparked little by little over the course of the story. Throughout Acts 1-3, he gets little nudges down the path to jealousy, but in Acts 4 and 5, he really starts to get "heated" and reveal the jealousy that was created in him by Iago's plan. He goes off on Desdemona about her being a whore with Cassio and giving away his blessed handkerchief, and even questions Emilia's motives. His judgement starts to become clouded near the ending and when the story does come to a close, he ends up dead.
