Teaching Your Family Then Community
Submitted by pparker on Tue, 02/16/2010 - 21:57.
It is just as important to conserve water in your own home as well in your community.

To better improve the conservation of water, we have to firstly improve our individual habits.
Then as a unit in our households.
Encourage Family & Community members to:
- Take 5 minute showers
- Turn off Sink Water when brushing teeth
- Eliminate Leaks
- Check Plumbing

It is important to inform our towns and cities about saving water. By teaching others to
use water wisely it will positively effect us indiviualy and as a country.
Wastewater can also be treated and reused.
As you conserve water at home and
in your community, you will help ensure that the water available now will eventually meet the growing water needs of the future.

How to save
Submitted by pparker on Fri, 02/05/2010 - 15:08.
You can save up to 20,000 gallons of water a year by not letting the water run
20,000 gallons of water can fill a fish tank.
Methods to help the water from running:
- When brushing your teeth, just wet your brush, then turn off the water. Turn the water on again to rinse your brush.
- When washing dishes, fill up the basin and rinse the dishes in it instead of running water over each dish and piece of cutlery.
- When running a bath, plug the tub before you start.
- For when you are thirsty, leave a bottle of water in the refrigerator instead of running water to fill your glass.

Note: Don't waste water by pouring it down the sink. Instead, pour it on a thirsty plant or top off your goldfish bowl. For more information about water conservation and more tips, go to www.wateruseitwisely.com.

How does water and energy connect:
Saving water also saves energy 6.5% of the energy used.
Saving energy and using alternative energy saves water electricity production from fossil fuels and nuclear energy, which is responsible for 39% of all freshwater withdrawals in the nation.
Bettcha' Didn't Know This :
- Producing 1 lb of bread requires 500 gallons of water.
- Producing a typical U.S. car requires more than 50 times its weight in water (39,090 gallons)
- Producing 1 serving (8 oz.) of chicken requires 330 gallons of water.
- Growing one cotton T-shirt requires 256 gallons of water
- 1 serving (8 fl. oz.) of milk requires 48 gallons of water.
- Producing 1 serving (2 oz.) of pasta requires 36 gallons of water.
- Producing 1 serving (4.6 oz.) of oranges requires 14 gallons of water. Producing
- Producing 1 serving (4.3 oz.) of tomatoes requires 8 gallons of water.

Water Conservation: In the yard and garden...
16. Plant drought-resistant lawns, shrubs and plants
17. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants
18. Don't water the gutter
19. Water your lawn only when it needs it
20. Deep-soak your lawn
21. Water during the early parts of the day; avoid watering when it's windy
22. Add organic matter and use efficient watering systems for shrubs, flower beds and lawns
23. Don't run the hose while washing your car
24. Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks
25. Check for leaks in pipes, hoses, faucets and couplings
Wasting water wastes electricity!
Why? Because the biggest use ofelectricity in most cities is supplying water and cleaning it up afterit's been used!
About 75 percent of the water
we use in our homes is used in the bathroom. Unless you have a low
flush toilet, for example, you useabout five gallons to seven gallons
of water with every flush! A leakytoilet can waste more than 10,000
gallons of water a year. Wow!
Drippy faucets are bad, too! A faucet that leaks enough water to fill a soda bottle every 30 minutes will waste 2,192 gallons of water ayear.
Another
simple way to save water AND energy is to take shorter showers. You'll
use less hot water - and water heaters account fornearly 1/4 of your
home's energy use according to American Water Savers
Lets be Organic! or at least recycle. NO lets start with the changing our daily use of water!

Reflection/ Blog 1
Thesis/ Problem
Even though water life's most basic commodity. The average consumption of water should be limited being as though it is not renewable source. Wasting water causes multiple problems for countries and communities. Water abuse causes lack of resources.Considering that it is or should be an everyday use, people should be informed on how much is too much.
Things I need to find out/ Questions I have
Are there already toilets that are eco friendly that use less water?
Does this information ( 19.5 gallons per year) depend on one person or the average house hold?
The Struggles
It is very difficult finding information about wasteful americans. Im currently using google as a search engine to fing more information on wasting water. I have not found statistics like I wanted to yet. But eventually I will make it there.

I find this particular chapter really interesting because of the reaction of the girl and soilders. This chapter is big on cause and effect. I believe the Vietnamese girls reaction to her village and most importantly family being burned and killed was a dance of undefeat and bravery because she couldve been as easily killed too. She reminds me of Cross, when he thought about touching rose while the leader had just died. They both have big responsibility after both have tragic incidents. The girl now has to be her own responsibility and take care of herself, and Cross has to become the leader.

I engage and benefit in this class several ways. I engage and benefit physicaly, internally, and exteranlly. I participate in complex and mature conversations based off of opinoins, predictions and facts from the book. I collaborate with my classmates on thoughts and summaries of the books. In the mix of reality based conversations there is a tension of a loving andtruthfulness
in the entire room. The teachers reflect on our work and give feed back on what we did, we then edit and present our projects connecting with the class.

Visual Lab- A Average
Reflection- I believe that this benchmark was unique because of the variables tested within it.
Collaboration- In this particular project we got the chance to choose a partner to work with. With that in mind we shared ideas and thoughts and came up with variables we should test.
Presentation- In the end we presented and received a grade for a written lab and visual lab.
