Bill Tracking 11/23

Honestly I don't know what's going on with my bills. All of them are being ingnored. The healthcare bill got enough votes so that it can stay alive for debate. I assumed that it finally passed the senate subcommitte this weekend. This new step with it, allows the bill to be refined, things added, and subtracted, and then it will be able to be enacted as a law. The bill needed 60 votes to pass the senate floor, and it got it this weekend. 58 democrats and two independents voted for the bill. Harry Reid is hoping for the bill to pass the senate by christmas. From here on, there will be a lot of debates, merging, and subtracting or adding of information, to get a bill that will be voted into law.

House Bill H.R. 1868 11/19

There is a scheduled meeting for my city bill on the 11/19. The exec branch should make sure that these bills are moving forward. There's no point to introducing a bill, if no one is going to put time into it. There should also be a limit to how many of these bills are allowed to be introduced. If the bill has no initial support, then it should not be introduced in the legislation, because that's as far as it will get an introduction. Bills are supposed to bring change, and if bills are being neglected there are no changes, and no point to the bill. the exec branch should make sure there is sufficient funding to execute the change. They should also play a role in the sustainability of the change of that the bill creates.

Election Day Nov. 3rd

The scene of my polling place last year and this year are very similar. I went around the same time, and there weren't a lot of people. However I spoke to the people at the polls and they said that the turn out was significantly less. Last year there were lines going to separate directions. The big difference is the feel of the place. Last year we were awaiting something spectacular and exciting. this year, not many people actually know who the people we're voting for are, what tehy do, and why they are important. Also, how do these people who will be elected change our life? Not many undersdtand the way the American government works, so today's candidates may be seen as insignificant, because many people think the president is the big dog that gets to decide everything. There was much more advertisement and signs last year. The turn out is significantly less, because last year we knew who our candidates were. This year these people just seem random, some of us might've never heard their names before. How can you vote for someone if you don't know them?

House Bill H.R. 1868 - 6

here has been no recent changes to my state or federal bill. The meeting that was scheduled from my city bill was held. No other actions came out of it.

Immigration Act of 1917

gov. benchmark

House Bill H.R. 1868 - 5

There has been no recent changes to my state or federal bill. There's a meeting scheduled for my city bill on the 22nd. I would want my state bill which deals with getting more money in the schools for special education. I prefer this bill, because I believe the way to fix the world is throughe ducation. If we have more resoucres for kids with ld, then they will eventually be able to function like a "normal" child. If however we don't put the amount of resources into the program as we need to then we will have an abundance of kids with LD who are not being served correctly in our schools. Education is a more favorable topicto me, because it is the topic of my three bills that affect me teh most.

House Bill H.R. 1868 - 4

My bills are all legislative failures. Congress is not passing bills that have to do witha  common themese. The bills that have passed before mine have varied from the topic of food, to student ait. However, if we explore the bills then we would see a common theme of things that affects American citizens directly. If the goal of congress currently is to pass laws that make Americans' life easier, then my bill will not be passed soon because it focusses on Immigration. It dies affect Americans, but it does so indirectly.

Vision of School

High school should be the place that people go so that they can find, or get more passion for their element. Schools should have an individualized plan of study so that the students who know what they want to study can directly do so. Kids should not be forced to take “standard” classes if they are willing to commit to a specific study. In every curriculum there should be a “shopping period” of classes, so that students can test out the structure and context of the class before they commit.

High school is often seen as the level of schooling where students discover themselves, and what they want to study. However students should be given the responsibility of making this decision earlier. A student should have an idea of a field that interests them when in middle school. Discovering what you like, and what you’re curious about is an essential part of development that should be advocated through one’s entire school life. By the time a student gets to high school the focus should switch from discovery to experiments.

High school should consist of real life experiences incorporated in the curriculum. Kids should not be asked to simply learn the theory, but they should be able to practice the theory. After high school a student should have enough information about a specific topic, so that they can begin to teach, and apply it by the time they are 16. If the process of discovery starts earlier, then students would be prepared to experiment about topics they are curious about at a younger age, and gain more expertise in it at a younger age.  If the process of helping kids discovers their element is done correctly pre high school then students would be able to start high school earlier. High school would be able to start in the 7th grade. Every student should have the ability to identify what interests him or her by the time they are 12, and be prepared to indulge in these interests in high school. If students were focusing on a specific topic then they wouldn’t need 12 years of schooling to test the waters of everything. The length of high school for everyone would change, because different careers require different lengths of study. A kid studying theatre might spend more time acting, rather than learning what it means to act, so they would go off to an acting institution earlier than someone who is studying to become a brain surgeon. A person, who doesn’t know what they want to study, can take classes in the field or fields that interests them the most.

It is important for students to understand that failing is an option, if one is willing to try again. When I speak of failure I mean it in the sense that students are comfortable trying something else if their initial interest lost its appeal. Students must understand that careers are different in theory than in practice. One might love being a doctor – a person who helps another, but one might not enjoy studying the chemistry, and biology that is mandated. If a student were given the necessary exposure in a specific field then their horizons would expand. Him or her would see that there are many careers where one’s main job is to help someone become better. It’s the jobs of teachers, counselors, and coaches to administer help. When given real life experiences to explore their area of interest, students would see the common themes in careers.

When you’re young you’re likely to be adventurous, and study the thing that makes you happy, rather than the thing that makes you more money. Youths possess a degree of recklessness that if molded correctly can help them become adults who are passionate about their careers. A person under 18 is more likely to keep searching for a career that interests them than a person who is 25. When you’re a young adult most of the things you engage in is for your own self-satisfaction. If we allow students explore careers as young adults instead of  when they are adults thinking about the career that will help them pay off their students loans, then we will have more passionate people in our work fields. Passionate people are the ones who educate people. Society needs more passionate educators. Also if students failed to like something while they are still in high school where it is free to have an education, then they will not be reluctant about switching their interests and trying something
entirely new.

If I were educated in the type of school described above then I would expect to be given the responsibility of choice. I would’ve chosen the courses that I wanted since 9th grade and not until 12th. I would’ve been able to sufficiently explain physics beyond the basics to someone, because I would’ve taken it for four years instead of one. Schools that have to follow a traditional standard assume that students do not have the ability to make good choices. A school with a traditional curriculum undermines their student’s ability, and creates cloned students with the same academic background.  In a school that I mentioned above the curriculum is designed to show a student’s interest. A transcript would become something that
told you a student’s academic interest, instead of piece of paper with grades on it. Classes would be more interactive, because it would be a room full of people with common interest and common curiosity.

Students should
get something that they think is useful out of school. We choose the things
that we find useful. So the only way for a student to believe school is purposeful
is for them to choose what they want to study.

House Bill H.R. 1868 - 3

My bills are rejected, nothing has happened to them since last week. My state and city bills both deal with monetary problems. My federal bill is a citizenship and rights bill. It deals with benefits, but not those solely of money. All of the bills however deal with someone right to own - education, citizenship, ora house.  Bills at the federal state and city level covers issues of the same context, however the difference is the amount of people that the bill affects.

House Bill H.R. 1868-2

No recent actions have been done with H.R. 1868 bill since April first.

No recent actions have been done with. P.L. 30.

Thenext meeting for my phila bill is schedule son october 1st.  The bills are moving as slow as they are, because I think most attention is being given to matters of economical fianance, and other areas are being neglected. My PA bill and Phila bill are related in the sense thath both of them need a monetary investment.

House Bill H.R. 1868

H.R.1868 is a bill that deals with the Birthright Citizenship Act. Senator Nathan Deal is sponsoring it. The bill’s purpose is to amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify who is a citizen of the United States. The bill was introduced on April 2nd, 2009 and has since been referred to the Subcommittee on Immigration on May 26th, 2009. This bill will most likely be deferred, and will not become a law. There are many immigration bills in congress and immigration is always a very controversial topic.

The State Bill that I chose to follow is one that deals with Education. The bill advocates for funding for special education. This bill is interesting because a large number of  students are diagnosed with LD's, and it is important that our students are being properly served. Students need more help in order for them to be revolutionary as we want the ideal student to be, so it is important for us to invest money in our student's education. My prediction is that the bill will not be passed, because the Education budget for PA is already contriversial, anf I don't think anything else will be added onto it for a while.

Year End Review

November - Shareesa

I go to bed on October 31st hoping for a new November,
And the dreadful October to not remember
But its November 16th and there’s still a war with Iraqi’s and US soldiers
Yup, same ol’ October
A Black man is president; hmm let’s pretend the inequality is over
Same sex marriage outlaw happens November 4th in California.
And then it all starts tumbling down
November 19th – cover your ears, and wipe your eyes, the Dow is down!
Via mama America and daddy Kenya, our new president’s name is Barack Obama
Lets crawl out of the city and enter the bush
Where in Haiti 12 dies when a school collapses and looks like mush.

Bollers Harlem Renaissance Sources

Nichols , Kathleen L. Jazz Age Culture . 2003. Pittsburg State University . 11 May 2009 <http://faculty.pittstate.edu/~knichols/jazzage.html#harlem>.
This source gives you personal opinions about the 1920s and what jazz during Harlem Renaissance meant to Blacks during that time. Black people started investing their time into music and arts. The music was used to tell stories that people wouldn’t say out loud but was in their hearts. Music was used as an escape of reality.

Philadelphia Real Estate

AOL Real Estate . 2008. AOL. 12 Jan. 2009 <http://realestate.aol.com/Philadelphia-PA-neighborhood/page-5>.

This source compared the income of the 88 neighborhoods in Philadelphia. It also compared the specific part of the Philadelphia that it is. It is helpful to the project because the places with the low-income rates syncs up to the map that shows the places in Philadelphia with the highest drop our rate. This source helped to prove our sub conclusion that poverty is one of the major factors that cause people to drop out.

High School Dropout Rates

Hollinger , Debra. High School Dropout Rates . 1993. Consumer Guide . 19 Dec. 2008 <http://www.ed.gov/pubs/OR/ConsumerGuides/dropout.html>.

This website was a really good source in summing up some main points on high school dropouts. It served as an outline, addressing who is a dropout. This question was the backbone to other research by telling us about possible elements to go into depth about through the research.
The website did not take a stance on the topic, but it did provide stats that added to the urgency of knowing about high school dropout.  A lot of the main points made in our presentation are tied back to this site.  The objective of the site seemed to basically give an explanation of what the terms high school dropout meant.

Esquivel , Paloma . Cutting dropout rate also cuts crime . 26 Dec. 2007. 15 Jan. 2009 <http://articles.latimes.com/2007/dec/26/local/me-gradcrime26>.

This article was important because it went into specific details about the effect of dropouts on homicide. It made direct connections, and used specific numbers and stats to make connections between what it was talking about. This site also used many other sources, which saved the trouble of finding additional ones. A lot of information was provided, and the context of the site raised some questions about exactly how should the epidemic of the high school dropouts be approached.

The Last Dropout

Milliken, Bill . The Last Dropout . New York: Hay House Inc, 2007. 1-70.

The Last Dropout was a very interesting source for this presentation. Since the author Bill Milliken himself was a dropout everything in the book seemed more personal and sincere. This personal experience helped one to possibly understand a bit about the mentality of dropouts. The author also stated his personal opinions, and he mentioned the opinions of the organization that he worked with, and this added dynamic to the book, and it’s ideas.

Arts & Spirituality Center

The organization is the Arts & Spirituality Center . Its mission is to demonstrate arts through many different cultures. As such, that’s where the word spirituality comes into play.

I work along with the coordinator to plan activities, and events. I would review plans, and proposals, and add stuff that would make it more appealing to teenagers. I also work on a larger scale on documenting the way that teenagers respond to new ideas, and the methods of presentation that works best.

You would need to be reliable; out spoken, confident – since there are many adults in the meetings, a great understanding of your peers, self aware, organized, and very open minded about new ideas.

Depending on what type of program you are involved in, you will learn different things. However it’s a great organization if you would like to gain poetry, drama, or any artistic, and cultural exposure.

Be very open minded, and impulsive enough to be comfortable with coming up with exciting ideas on the point. Not all events go exactly to schedule, so when something goes wrong, don’t panic, just come up with a better plan. It is not the busiest of places with thousand of things to do, so your mind may wander away from work very often. Be focused, and basically you will be fine.
