Samarium Art Project

• explain the project
Our project originally came from our Biochemistry projectwhere we had to pick an element from the periodic table and create a keynote onit answering the questions we where given. With the element we were given ourart teacher found this website where there was this artistic periodic tablewhere artists had their on vision on how the element should look.
• tell about your element - some you fun facts and someresearched facts
My element was samarium it is a rare earth metal, it is usedfor motion pictures lighting, lasers, magnets & etc. Their compounds areused as catalysts in the production of petroleum and synthetic products.   The atomic number is 62 and its’ symbol is sm. Samarium wasdiscovered by Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac in Switzerland in 1853. It wasisolated in France in 1879 by the French chemist Paul Emile Lecoq deBoisbaudran.
• tell about the three sketches made
The three sketches I made had something to do with crystalsor something that would give you the idea that samarium meant a metal.  The first sketch I drawled was a lightbulb it was the first thing that came to my mind since samarium is used to makelights.  The first sketch I drawledwas a light bulb, the second sketch I drawled was just lightening strikes upand down the paper the third sketch I drawled was a treasure chest with goldover flowing it. I think that each drawling had something that representedsamarium in an artistic way.
• tell why you chose the sketch you did on the block
I chose the treasure chest sketch because I put more thoughtinto, it had a lot of details and I think it represented samarium the most.
• tell about the imagery and why it was the one you chose
The design on my block gave my audience a betterunderstanding of my artistic view on samarium, and the facade of it was eyecatching. It was a wise decision to chose that image because it stands out fromthe rest.
