What Is Your Vision Of School?

While going throughout my life, the same question happens to pop up every single year “What is the point of school”. I myself have asked this question of what the point of school was. In my earlier years I’ve probably been asking the question to be stubborn towards the teacher, but as I got older I’ve wanted to know the answer. I went about discovering the answer most people avoid by asking teachers and my parents. But the one person who I really needed to ask was myself.
Throughout the semester my classmates and I have been reading about educators and their perspective on “What is the point of school is” or “What the point of school should be”. By reading the different types of perspectives varying from Deborah Meier’s vision of democratic education to President Obama’s speech on the first day of school, I’ve formulated my own vision of school. The purpose of my school would have a focus on the arts and the normal math, reading, and science following after it. In an agreement with Ken Robinson, I believe the arts would help students discover what they truly love and inspire to be when they get older. The arts include of drama, art (such as painting and drawling), and music. Not only will they help guide students in choosing their career choice, but also give them a little down time from the standard subjects. There would be a total of 6-8 classes total depending on how many classes the student wants to take 6 being the minimum and 8 being the highest. I am also a where that all students may not have an interest in the arts, which is why the standard teachings will be taught.
Students would have the option in choosing the classes that most interest them. The students will also have up to the first two weeks of school to change the art class they're in if they don't find interest in them. But the standard subjects would be taught the normal way depending on the grade the student's in.

A Liberal Arts Education
In general what you are describing is a Liberal Arts education, which I also think is the best way to go. Mostly because it inspires students to love learning, which is the only true and lasting lesson that can come from primary education.
I liked the comment "I believe the arts would help students discover what they truly love and inspire to be when they get older." Finding their area of passionate interest is the biggest gift parents or teachers can provide a student for it can set them on a path toward excellence.
Nice essay.
I agree that students should
I agree that students should know the bare minimums, but I don't think the 'arts' fall under that category. Some students want nothing to do with music or painting, and are only math or science enthusiasts. Others, like me, have discovered the 'arts' outside of the regular curriculum, and often, that is the best way to experience them, for you are not being forced to learn something, rather you're enjoying it yourself.
feedback
I like the fact that you provided specifics on how your exemplary school would be organized.
I'd cut the intro and start with: "The purpose of my school . . . " But I'd rewrite the sentence because the purpose is not to focus on arts. Presumably the purpose is to educate or inspire or engage students through the arts. You might write: "My ideal school would focus on the arts as a way to inspire students to learn math, reading, science and history." Or: "My ideal school would focus on the arts and also teach math, reading . . . "
You could include more on how arts education could support academic education. Could students study world cultures through the arts? Use drama classes to improve reading and speaking skills? You could google around for examples.
what size school
Qoute "The arts include of drama, art (such as painting and drawling), and music" 6-8 art classes per student , And if the student does not like the arts ,he can choose the "normal" styles of learning . But how big of school would this be as the kids who do not like the arts and aren't very good at it , choose normal learning style would 'nt he feel outcasted from the school as he does not take the Arts style of learning . there would seem to be only a small margin students that would take the normal style of learning. And they would not meet new people and becoming social to others ,one basic princple of school
OOh No I Have a BAD School ={
The only thing I can see going wrong is someone not finding the arts that i set in my school interesting. I think it was jerome who said what if the child wanted to be a dentist or maybe a chef, and the arts that I included didn't cover those types. So maybe that student may not find that there's no room in my school for them because their personal interest aren't one of the main subjects. I chose the types of art for my school by the types most kids are interested in and maybe thats where I went wrong. My school may not fit every student individually.
Hey there, I found this
Hey there,
I found this quote within your essay: "The purpose of my school would have a focus on the arts and the normal math, reading, and science following after it." If your school is mainly focused on the arts and somewhat focused on the regular subjects that schools today mainly learn, would they have the same skills in mathematics, reading/english, and science classes as other schools or would they be "lower" than the other students?
Tyrell's Vision...
Tyrell its seems as though your idea of school is very relaxed. I like the idea of art classes to use to help a student not only in art and the creative aspects of life, but also being used for down time as you would call it. I feel that the 6 to 8 classes really helps a student get a sense of independence in having to choose the classes they desire, just like in college. (way to prepare the kids for the future)
If your school actually existed i think it would be great for artistic children that would like to express themselves or need help expressing themselves. However, for the other children that aren't as interested as others in art there will be standard classes. I think that is an excellent idea so there doesn't seem like there is discrimination against non-artistic children and so that everyone is comfortable with in there day to day school life.
Excellent Job! : )
What about people who don't
What about people who don't take, or want the arts? What if they wanted to be in a office, or a police officer? What other classes would they take? Everyone should have the same core subjects, math, science, history, english. Then they should be able to choose what other classes they would want to take. More advanced math for someone who wants to be an accountant, or a technology class for the people into computers. The schools should be preparing us for what we are going to do. I like your ideas of starting something like this. Once people start to see that this is good for us the schools might open more workshops. Then when we go out into the world we are prepared to face the challenges of the everyday workday.
I think this is a good
I think this is a good essay. I also think it is good for students to know what they want to do in life especially with art. I think students should have the choice to pick what classes they want to take. Also I think everyone should take the main subjects no matter what mostly because its in the real world and you hear and see it everyday. I personally have said what is the point of school. Then I have learned that its exciting to learn and see what the world is like and the meaning of what you see everyday. I think the arts are amazing and I am going out for the arts, and think its fun and exciting to learn and then find a job out there that is right for you.
I would also want to know what other people have said about, "what is the point of school", and their reasons.
T-RizzRellz, my bud
Love your ideas of school. BUT. Cause see I need to make this problematic: What if your idea of art is not diverse enough? What if a student finds dentistry an art? What if a group of kids love cooking? I am being specific to your definition of art as it is in your words. There are so many more ways of making a passion an art form why should all students find it in those?
Rell! Heeey! I like your
Rell! Heeey! I like your ideas, but how will knowledge be assessed? What willl the interaction between the students and the teachers bee like? How will those students who learn slowly benefit?
Why did you choose 6 - 8
Why did you choose 6 - 8 classes? What would these classes compromise of? This is an interesting vision of school coming from you Ki, because you are going into nursing. I was expecting a more academic vision of school. Anyways this raises teh question of what an acasdemic cirriculum in your school would consist of.
Tyrell I think you have an
Tyrell I think you have an amazing idea and I love the fact that you incorporated the "normal" styles of learning as well for those kids that are not interested in the fine art courses.
