What do sports teams mean to the identity of a city

Sports teams mean several things to the identity of a city. It shows the city's team spirit. It also gives the city an identity of winners and they can feel pride of they win. Sports teams also make a city look good or bad.

Philles Win

The phillies winning th world series does not really mean anything to me. I do like them now, a lot!!!!

GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

What does the Phillies winning mean to you?

Well, actually the Phillies winning doesn't mean much to me at all. In a way it does mean something though. It means crazier fans running the streets (not more fans, just the fans from beofre more crazy). It also means to me no sleep for a few days. Living by a big street that leads right to Broad St, means that I won't get much sleep because of the people, the sirens, the fireworks (for as long as they will last) and more trash on the ground (because people get drunk and what not, leave trash behind).

ILP end of year reflection

As a repeat of what my project is; the goal of the project is to learn more about sustainability, green design, and energy saves, while applying some of my new found knowledge to give back to my school and make it more "green".

What I have done so far was found an amazing mentor, Peter Brown, for this project. Than Peter and I got to work quickly to give me material and resources to start my research into this topic. One resource was going and looking at a LEED design school Peter designed in Ft. Worth TX. We have also presented at the educational conference Educon 2.0. There we talked about my project as well as how we are making long distance mentoring work. At the very end of the year I started trying to fill out a carbonfoot print calculator for my school.

I have learned many things this year during this project. Most of the year was spent making connections and really nailing down the goals that we want to achieve by the end of 3 years. However through that I have also learned about many different ways people are thinking about green design and different ways to make buildings more efficient. Have read many articles and are learning what the pros and cons are for each type of solution to the energy crisis.

I had many expectations for my ILP project. My expectations were quite big though and are only just starting to get accomplished. See my Goals and Dream Goals

My ILP I picked so that I could see if this topic of green energy and such actually interested me before going into chemical engineering in university to work on alternative energy. This project greatly connects to my learning at SLA as well. It is all about designing my own learning and our core values.

From my experience this year with my ILP i'm taking away the skills of making connections to people that could possibly help me with my project. As well as a slightly better skills of setting deadlines and monitoring myself in a big project like this one.

My advice to people who want to take on a project like this is to be open minded. You have to be willing to switch your game plan when things don't work out the way you wanted/expected them to. You also have to have a lot of self motivation and be willing to sit down and work on your own without much guidance.

ILP Prep

What is your ILP (describe the organization/project)?

My ILP was at University of Pennsylvania.  This course was to teach computer-engineering software, Java.  This was the first partnership with University of Pennsylvania.

What have you done?

I have tried to learn the coding language.  I have tried to create my own code.  I sat through a college lecture.  I’ve understood what it feels like to take a college course.  I’ve seen what it’s like for students to teach a class.

What have you learned?

  • I’ve learned how to write the basics for javascript.
  • I’ve learned how to write javascript for BetterBot.
  • I’ve learned how to improve an already existing class.

What were your expectations for your ILP?

  • My expectations were to learn how to build a computer.
  • Learned to read the errors in a computer
  • Learn to fix errors

How did these expectations meet with what you have accomplished?

These expectations didn’t meet with anything that I have accomplished.  Everything I expected didn’t work the way it worked.  What I was told about this ILP wasn’t what it was.

How does your ILP connect with your future career plans?

This ILP connected with my future career plans by helping me understand what javascript is and was a good introduction to what a tech person should know.

How does your ILP connect to learning at SLA?

This ILP connects to learning at SLA by the way the school uses a tech language to write the server.  The school’s server is written in code and by understanding javascript, I could help improve the code to make the school’s server better.

How does your ILP connect/affect your ILP plans next year?

My ILP connect/affect my ILP plans for next year by helping me understand programs.  I hope my ILP is the R.a.D. Lab at Drexel, during the couple weeks I was there I had to write an explanation on how to use certain programs.

What are you taking with you from your ILP experience?

I am taking the ability to understand javascript and trying to comprehend it.  Javascript is a hard language to understand without any help.  I know the basics but with more research I can understand everything inside a webpage.

What advice do you have for someone else completing a similar ILP so that they can have a positive experience?

  • Try not to sleep.
  • Pay as much attention as possible.
  • DO ALL THE WORK.

Often, you will find me putting return and address labels on envelopes, stuffing those envelopes with fliers, or entering information into their database. I also researched possible donors for their silent auction and raffle. And yes, sometimes I do have fun things to do. I have read scripts that were mailed in by aspiring playwrights, and most of those were fairly entertaining and thoroughly horrible. When they were rehearsing for their holiday show, I sat in on rehearsals and even got to participate a bit!

I can’t say I’ve learned a list of things. Mainly, I’ve just gained a lot of experience in a real-life setting/workplace. I’ve learned about office dynamics and such. I guess you could say I’ve improved in labeling skills…

My advice for choosing your ILP: make sure you pick something you like. I’ve heard my classmates complaining about how they hate their ILP and that they wish they had been able to pick something else. Well, they were able to pick something else. 1812 didn’t come to the ILP Expo, we found them. If you don’t like the options well enough (remember, you’re stuck for a whole year!), then find something for yourself.

1812-specific advice: If you’re interested in interning at 1812, just be open. Take advantage of the opportunities. Othello Blog 1

What have we done so far? Basically we have received the assignment, and had our groups assigned. I’m in a group with Julian, Kiara, and Cassandra. So far we also have assigned jobs, and where we will post our stuff.

Well our group is probably going to be difficult as well as easy. I expect hard work from all of our members. But as you may know some of our members, mainly Julian and I, tend to be slackers, especially at the sight of potentially hard work. Cassandra is a slacker on and off. And Kiara works hard all the time so we will see.

Basically I haven’t done any work yet but I have taken a few glimpses at my Act (Act 3) in combination with Spark notes (for added comprehension and interpretation). I don’t know what tactics my teammates will be using. However, I doubt we will alter any of the lines we find.

I chose Act 3 because I believe that’s where our theme (jealousy) unfolds and gets the most attention. Such as Act 3 Scene lines 195-225 in which Iago warns Othello of the possible feelings of jealousy he could catch from seeing Cassio and Desdemona.

ILP

What is your ILP (describe the organization/project)?

My ILP organization is Drexel University and the Drexel Writing Center. At Drexel University I take a college class a quarter for real college credit. At the Writing Center college students help us learn more about writing.

What have you done?

I have taken three classes at Drexel and this is when most of my learning occurs. These classes covered topics such as art history, disease, and history. At the writing center we also wrote a letter to a senator about something that mattered to us. All in all I done a lot this year.

What have you learned?

-During my first class I learned all about diseases and how they shape history.
-In my second class I learned all about world history, which was also very interesting.
-The last class that I took was all about art history and symbolism and was by far my favorite. I also learned a lot about art and culture at the Drexel Writing Center.

What were your expectations for your ILP?

I did not have and expectations except that it would be hard.

How did these expectations meet with what you have accomplished?

The classes were hard at times but easy at others.

How does your ILP connect with your future career plans?

My ILP did not connect with my future career plans .

How does your ILP connect to learning at SLA?

My ILP does not connect to my learning al SLA.

How does your ILP connect/affect your ILP plans next year?

IT does not.

What are you taking with you from your ILP experience?

College Credit
What advice do you have for someone else completing a similar ILP so that they can have a positive experience?

-work really hard
-pay attention and take notes.
-ask questions

MY ILP AT STERLIN GLEN

My ILP is at Sterlin Glen Assistant Living. Sterlin Glen is basically a place for Senior that have retired. The senior get to be be independent and do everything on their on unlike a nursing home where  the seniors need aid on their daily actives. So far what I did at Sterlin Glen was I would come every Wednesday and help out. Like for example, I would play BINGO with the seniors, I would also help decorate when it’s a holiday like for example Halloween. To conclude what I did was I just help out with the activities. The things that I have learned while being an intern there was that people are very different in many ways, like for example, when you get old you tend to talk a lot and view life and a different way. The seniors there where very surprise when I told them that I went to a high school where all the students had laptops.

If I work at a place that sells things I want to learn sales techniques and the techniques for talking to customers. If I have to work in a place that helps people with travel information or medical problems, like the hospital or a travel guide place or the tourist center I would like to learn how to use their machines and all their technology. Any place I go will learn whatever they tech me.

I want to build on my social skills with talking to people.

1) i want to learn business skills and lawyer skills that would help me in my future job, hopefully as a lawyer or international businessman.
2) I want to learn how to talk to people better. i also want to work on my engineering/technology skills.
3) International law and defense or prosecution lawyers

Big Picture Alliance

The organization that I work for is the Big Picture Alliance. It's mission is to provide students and youth the tools they need to be able to create/film/produce their own video. Topics can range from a music video to even a documentary. The BPA is helping us create a documentary about SLA. This is the website:
http://www.bigpicturealliance.org/

We, all the students that work here, are the directors/producers/editors/cameramen of the entire project. Personally, I like to handle the camera a lot. We all do the editing, when we get to that part, we are doing the filming together, and the interviewing together.

We started with a rough knowledge of how to videotape things. We took time to learn the vocabulary, get familiar with the camera, learn the dynamics on and off set, we learned everything there. You don't need any background knowledge at all for this ILP.

I have learned a lot of vocabulary for the set. I learned a lot about the dynamics of filming and stuff like that....

If you have a patience, you have to learn a lot in the beginning but it gets VERY fun at the end.

Hospital Of the University of Pennsylvania

My ILP is at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, the link for HUP is http://pennhealth.com/hup/. My current mission is to spread and inform people and patients about a website the Hospital created known as "carepages". My job at the hospital is go around on different floors and talk to the patients and tell them about the website and give them information about the site (such as bookmarks and posters). I then document the room I went to and mark off if I said yes or no, and if they say no we have to put the reason why. The skills you need are simple, you must have to be patient to people because they are all sick and most of them are usually cranky toward people. What I am learning from this ILP is how to deal in medical situations seeing as though I want to be a doctor so it is very interesting to be in a environment where I see people doing the things I hope to do in the future. My advice when going to HUP next year is to tell them what you want to do. This is because when I went to HUP I was not expected to do carepages but I was basically forced to. So you should tell what you want to do because you have more options besides carepages.

Franklin Institute - Sci-Fi Sore

My organization in inside the place we all know well,

the Franklin Institute

. Its interest is to teach kids science in a fun and interactive way. I work in the gift shop aka Sci-Fi store. In the Sci-Fi store I stock items, file papers, price items, basicially all the things a paid worker would do. There are no skills necessary for this internship they will teach you whatever you need to know. In the beginning you will be with someone who tells all the different places you can work at and if you don't like it than you can change. I am learning a lot while at my my ILP. First, I am learning all that needs to be put  into a buisness. Like when I was filing papers I seen all the money they use and how much they have to record like how much everything is. You also learn how much work people do in retail shops. Like for instance one of my many bosses told me to straightned up all the products and make sure their not out of place, when I finish and went to the back to tell her I came back out and everything was a mess again, so you think these people's jobs are so easy but they are not as easy as they may seem. If I were to give advice to a 9th grdering to do their ILP at the Franklin then I would tell them to make a good decision on where you want to work inside the Franklin and don't give up o n that decision so easily because I admit that some people don't like working at the franklin and some do and I'm one of the people who likes working there alot.

1812 Productions

1812 Productions is Philadelphia’s All Comedy Theater Company. 1812 is dedicated to: entertaining, educating and exploring a variety of issues through comedy, supporting and hiring local artists, and making the end product accessible to a diverse general public with a particular focus on the greater Philadelphia region (lifted from their website).

On Wednesdays, I am the resident intern, meaning that I do whatever they tell me to. They’re very nice, though, and care for my welfare.

I didn’t really need any skills coming in, except for making sure they don’t hate me and send me back. They haven’t so far, so I guess it’s all good.

SLA Goes Green!

  • What is the organization? What is its mission? Link to website
I'm not working with an organization, I have made my own project. My mission is to research sustainability, carbon nutral, and green building and to use that knowledge to help SLA become a more green school. I have two websites going to track my project a blog and a wiki
  • What is my job/role in this organization?

I am doing all the research and collabortating with many people in order to reach my mission. It involes quite a bit of outside time.

  • What skills do I need?

To be able to work on your own without a ton of guiding. Also to be able to reaserch, collaborate, and be motivated. Also to have pretty good organization and follow through with things.

  • What am I learning? What have I learned?

I am learning many things about green design and alternate energy. Also how to collaborate with people from all over the world. As well as project management.

  • What advice would you have for an SLA student considering doing their ILP with this site next year?

If you want to make up our own ILP or even join me on mine you have to make sure that you have the motivation to be able to push your self to actually do it. It isn't like a class that you go to, you are truly on your own and no one is there to really push you. The only contact with my mentor that i have is e-mail, skyp, and other online tools. I have only seen him in person twice. And it is really you decided what has to get done in order to complet your mission with little guidance comparded to what we are used to.

Philadelphia Student Union

This organization also said in the title is the Philadelphia Student Union. The unions goal is to make Philadelphia schools better turn young students into leaders by demanding better education in Philadelphia's school system. The entire union is made up of students from all over Philadelphia who make positive changes. Your job in this organization will depend on what your skills are. What I did was writing news letters in the paper. I also showed up to many actions and show up to meetings that took steps to making better schools.

The skills you might need may vary but the Union welcomes all students to be part of the Union. No skills are really neccesary but your commitment. What you'll be learning are leadership skills that can help you later on in your life. You will also be active in your community and helping pave the road to better education. I would reccommend this ILP for any person who is passionate about chaning the schools in the Philadelphia school district.
