Election Day
Submitted by jlisterud on Wed, 11/04/2009 - 02:28.
I have had trouble uploading the picture, and I'm hoping that in class, you might be able to help me out with this.
This election scene had only a few people at the ballots this year, while last year, there were long lines of people waiting to vote. A major reason for this was not only because last year was a presidential election, but it was also because Barack Obama was a candidate for president. This had spawned a lot of controversy between Democrats and Republicans, and each party was desperate to make sure that they get the President they desired. This year, this was an election between congressmen, making this far less exciting, and nowhere near historical.

For our English Benchmark we were to create an essay on a certain thesis statement that we could come up with from our book “The Odyssey” Everyone thought of a good idea for a thesis statement and look for certain way to describe it. Then we all wrote a five paragraph essay about our thesis and explained why we chose the statement and tried to prove our statement. With any kind of support form our book.

Reaction Towards Obama's Acceptance Speech.
Submitted by jmcclain on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 00:56.
My reaction towards Obama's Speech was mutual. After reading the transcript and watching the speech it had me feeling great, do to the simple fact that I actually had a chance to experience something so great and amazing. I never was interesting in politics but now after that speech it had me reconsidering it. I never thought that. I would compare that speech to Martin Luther Kings Speech. Only because it had the same impact on me. To me they both shared the same message. Especially when he was speaking about how the people who serve for this country may be republicans and democrats but they serve it together in which is what is how i see MLK's speech. Unity is the word.
Biochemistry Benchmark Quarter One
Submitted by abeckton on Sun, 01/04/2009 - 23:19.
For the benchmark we had a choose a scientist from a list separated into time periods and choose a partner. After selecting a scientist we had to research them in detail and figure out what they were most famous for and their contributions to society. Once doing this we presented and had to figure out who should win the "Slaward". The "Slaward" was the award given to the scientist deemed the most helpful to our modern lifestyle.
For the project I created a fact sheet showing a picture of Sir Hans Adolf Krebs and three little known but important facts about his research. Another thing I did in this project was that I made a slideshow as a visual aid for my prtner and I when presenting.

Biochemistry Benchmark Quarter 1
Submitted by awhite on Tue, 11/25/2008 - 15:12.
Our project had to be about the science since the 17th century. We worked with a parter that is in our stream. We had to do research about the specific scient that you and your partner chose. We had to make a presentation that was persuasive to Mr. Best and the rest of the class for them to vote for our scientist for the SLAward. The SLAward is like a recognition to all the things that a scientist did for our world.
My scientist was Charles Darwin. We were told to research Charles Darwin and say why he deserves and is worth of the SLAward.
If I had to do this project over again I would follow the planed schedule in order to have all parts fully completed and submitted on time
Quarter 1 History Benchmark
Submitted by awhite on Sun, 11/23/2008 - 23:34.
In quarter one in my history class we were learning about King Tut and we were given a scenario where we had to be a committee and persuade the towns representative to use are committee to plan out King Tut’s stay in a town called Pre-Wadjet.
I was in charge of culinary and religious portions of the project. I created the menu for Friday night’s dinner and the Grand dinner.
If I could do this project again I would probably make sure I manage my time wisely and make sure everything is completed with excellent quality work at least a day before the assignment is due.

Geometry Benchmark-Q1
For geometry our benchmark was to research how a subject that we were given fits into geometry. In a group we had to make a lesson like a slideshow or an activity to teach the class and make a pamphlet about the basic information.
My group got engineering and Architecture in Geometry, we made a slideshow and we each individually made pamphlets.

Spanish Benchmark –Q1
In our Spanish class we had been reviewing past tense conjugations. Our benchmark was to write about a thing or place we went during the summer. We had to write a paper, and make a slideshow or a movie with our voices to tell our story.
I told about my trip to Mohonk resort in New York with my friend and her family. I made a slideshow and recorded my voice over it. I told about the lake, the food and the activities we did.

First Quarter English Benchmark
Submitted by awhite on Fri, 11/21/2008 - 03:23.
In English class I was learning about how to form the structure of a Thesis paper and how to write creatively. Our benchmark had two parts. They were Thesis and Creative pieces. While learning these skills we were reading a book entitled “The Odyssey” and watching a movie with a similar plot called “Troy”. For the first part we were instructed to write a thesis paper and use evidence from the story to support your thesis statement. For the second part we had to create a hero and a story. The requirements were to make up a conflict for your hero to go through and to include an epic simile and/ or metaphor in order to describe something in your story.

Our first quarter Spanish benchmark was to make a movie orslideshow to go along with a monologue or a recording of ourselves talkingabout an advertisement of a Spanish speaking country. For this we had to organize some sort of itinerary that would describe what the ‘travel agency’ that we were representing would be offering.

Our math benchmark was based on scale. We had to design the blueprint of a house in groups with real life measurements and then scale them down. Each person in the group needed a roomand each room needed a minimum of 5 objects unique to that room with both reallife and scaled down measurements.
My group consisted of myself, Basheer Lewis, Joseph Parisi and Lamaya Mapp. Idesigned the bedroom of our ‘house’. In the bedroom I put a bed, an area rug, acomputer and chair and two bookshelves. I helped come up with lots of objectideas for our group. Our blueprint consisted of a bedroom, a bathroom, anentertainment room and a utility room.

For our biochem benchmark we had to make a fact sheet, a presentation and fill outa “SLAward” form for a scientist of our choice. The idea behind this was thatwe were split into 2-3 people groups and we were to try to convince our fellowclassmates into voting for our scientist to receive the “SLAward”.

For History class, our benchmark assignment was to ‘design’ a parade and festival as a group for King Tut, oneof the most famous pharaohs of ancient Egypt. We were given a certain budget tospend on luxuries and basic living necessities for the pharaoh. We were also given a spreadsheet with a large amount of luxuries and necessities listed. The luxuries had certain prices based on how large they were in terms of scale and value. Each of the items had three different prices, listed from highest to lowest:deluxe, normal and minimum.

Some of the major aspects that we analyzed were glory, gender roles and hospitality. The bare necessities for this were five paragraphs; an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph. In all our body paragraphs we needed at least one important quotefrom the book proving our point.
Power sequences by William Marsh
Submitted by wmarsh on Mon, 11/10/2008 - 17:41.
In this drupal post, I will be explaining power sequences. I'm sure that the first and foremost question that comes to mind for many is "what is a power sequence?"; a power sequence is a pattern or sequence of numbers that follows an exponential rule. For example if the first term of a power sequence were three and the rule of it was to follow the second power the first several terms would be as follows: 3, 9, 81… There are technically two ways of saying something is a power sequence. The first would obviously be a power sequence however the second would be known as an exponential sequence; or a sequence that uses exponents. Power sequences are not used often because they are used solely when something rises or falls exponentially; which is not very common.

My reaction to Obama's speech
Submitted by mstuart on Thu, 11/06/2008 - 20:05.
After I saw Sen. Obama's victory speech I was very hopeful about our new president elect. I was happy he had won and after the speech I was reassured that he could do a good job in office. I was also reassured that America was a country that can overcome challenges and can change the face of itself.

On November 4, 2008 I saw my father cry for the first time and it was then i realized that what I had just witnessed was real. While watching Barack Obama's speech I reflected on my history as an African American and I felt an instant sense of gratification and pride. I know this is only the beginning, and as long as the American people and Barack Obama continue the fight of uniting America that the best is yet to come.

Obama's speech was very inspiring. I felt like he kept his compulsure and made sure that he didn't seem to be gloating about his victory. This showed what type of person he was. He made the citizens of the United States feel a sense of trust in his plans to fix our broken country. I also liked the fact that he explained how all his descisions will be made with his country in mind.

When our new president Barack Obama was elected president, millions of people gasps for their breath for the victory that America gain. They gained not only a new president, but made history during a time where CHANGE was needed. My reactions to his acceptance speech were similar to those who were happy and felt that change was comming. He talked humble, but of pride, assuring me and others that he was the one who America needed to make this country a better place than the last 8 years that we've suffered from.
