2009

Nov. 3. 2009 Voting Day

I went to a school around the corner from my house at about 3:30, when I walked it it was extremely quiet and the people working the polls were yawning, doing crossword puzzles, or reading books. I went up to a 4 people and asked them those questions and they were all basically the same. All of them worked the polls last year and came to a conclusion that there were so many more people that showed up for the voting last year. I asked them what was the best thing about working the polls and everyone said nothing. One person said it did allow her to read the book she was procrastinating about. But the most difficult part of working the polls were the long long hours with no pay.

Election Day 2009

On Election day I was asked to go to my polling place and ask a Poll Worker a few questions. The Poll Worker I interviewed was Michael McBride.

Question 1 - Did you work the election last year?

Answer - Yes I did. I work here every year.

Question 2 - How is this year different than 2009?

Answer - There is a smaller turnout this year.

Question 3 - What is the Best part of being a Poll Worker?

Answer - I get to see neighbors I don't always get to see.

Question 4 - What is the most difficult part of being a Poll Worker?

Answer - Dealing with the weather is always the worst.

During my trip there I was not able to go inside the building where they were voting because I was underage, so I took a picture of the outside of the building. While I was there only one other person went to go vote, the polling place was almost deserted.

Election Day 2009: November 3rd

There was a huge difference at the polling place on tuesday compared to the same polling place last year.

That is really no surprise because the presidential election was the event I attended last year.

I noticed that there were a lot more young voters at the polling place last year for the presidential election.

Most of the people I saw at the polling place on tuesday, were older voters, most of which were conservatives.

Election Day 2009 For Narayan El

Today when I went out to the polling facility, I quickly noticed that the election scenario this year was hardly like that of last year at all. There were no lines, and not a huge amount of people streaming in and out of the facility. The only similarity between this and last year's election that I saw was that the same people were overseeing/facilitating the voting process, such as Ms. Terry. Connor. From what I understand, today's election scene is much less active than last year's because citizens are voting for individuals for positions that aren't as high as president and vice president. For example, here in Pennsylvania, the election was for Supreme Court judges/justices, the retention of already serving Supreme Court officials, and also for election judges, which Terry was one of the candidates for. So, I would say that because less authoritative figures are being elected today, everyone isn't't as interested in the election, making the voter turnout  lower and causing the facilities to receive less activity. In New Jersey, however, the new governor is being elected, so I would assume the activity is of a higher level over there. For Pennsylvania, it's simply a drop in the frequency of business regarding this year's election due to decreased priority in people's eyes.

Election Day

I have had trouble uploading the picture, and I'm hoping that in class, you might be able to help me out with this.

This election scene had only a few people at the ballots this year, while last year, there were long lines of people waiting to vote.  A major reason for this was not only because last year was a presidential election, but it was also because Barack Obama was a candidate for president.  This had spawned a lot of controversy between Democrats and Republicans, and each party was desperate to make sure that they get the President they desired.  This year, this was an election between congressmen, making this far less exciting, and nowhere near historical.

SLA XC Runners Qualify for PIAA State Championship Meet

Congratulations to Alison Campbell, Shareesa Bollers and Mike Miller for qualifying last Wednesday at the District XII Championship meet as individuals to run in the PIAA Cross Country State Championship. Will MacFarlane is an alternate and will run in the case that a District XII athlete is unable to attend.

For the ladies, Alison finished 4th earning First Team District XII AA honors. Shareesa Bollers finished 36th with Marina Stuart and Aimee Leong finishing right behind.  Congratulations, ladies!

Due to the finish line offical dropping the only copy in the mud, the results for this meet were delayed and incomplete.  Mike Miller finished 31st and despite the muddy conditions finished with a personal record time of 20.37 - a new school record!  Will MacFarlane finished 35th, only two spots away from qualifying.  Chris Cothran, Sam Beccaria and John Derry all ran tough races to finish the season strong.   Congratulations, gentlemen!

The PIAA Cross Country State Championship meet will take place this Saturday, November 7th, in Hershey.  Good luck, SLA XC!

Humanities Final Portfolio 2009

When I entered this year, everything was different than what I was used to. It felt like I was being treated as an equal for once because now I could be in a regular English class. I got treated equally in class and on my work. Thanks to Mr. Block, I’ve realized how much I can improve in such a short time. Even though everything was hard, the work we did taught me how to put my own perspective and cultural influence into my work.

Monologue, 2009

Monologue: Little Nudger

(Girl yelling and pacing in front of bed crying. Mom’s sitting on bed looking weary and worried.)
Girl: Mom you don’t understand! I can’t do this! I’m only sixteen-years old! I have my whole life ahead of me! This wasn’t even my choice, my fault! I didn’t ask for this baby, I didn’t go around having unprotected sex this isn’t my responsibility!
(Girl sinks to knees crying into her hands, whispering.) Mom, please. I can’t handle this.

(Mom says something back we can’t hear. Girl stands and looks at her mother angrily and starts yelling again. Major gesticulation.)

Language Essay, 2009

There are people who bring rain and put out your inner fire, and those who rekindle the fire from the embers. Don’t let anyone reduce you brilliant blazing fire to dull glowing embers.
It’s Saturday night and I’m sitting in front of the big desktop, instant messaging Evan. I start to laugh, half at my silly little sister and half at Evan. I turn my head away from my sister to the IM on the monitor.

Printmaking Element Project

Printmaking Element Project

The fourth quarter ninth grade art benchmark was designed so students could display their artistic and scientific knowledge of the element of their choice from the periodic table. The goal was to create a 6x6 drawing that would exemplify what the element was used for, their atomic number and symbol or name of the element. The project required basic research of the element chosen by the student and the use of an imaginative mind for the drawing.

Printmaking Element Project

Students in 9th grade at Science Leadership Academy had to make a Printmaking Element. Each student had 3 choices to pick a element from the Periodic Table. After the students were done picking, they had to do research on their elements. Then in Art class, the students had to make a Linoleum Print.

I picked Hydrogen as my element. Above is a picture of my printmaking of hydrogen. Hydrogen is the first element on the Periodic Table. Hydrogen's atomic number is 1 and it's symbol is H. Hydrogen has 1 proton, 1 electron and it doesnt have any neutron.

Printmaking Element Project

•    Students at Science leadership Academy high school were assigned in their biochemistry class to pick their element and study the element but during this project we were also assigned to make a print making of the element, doing the print making of the element is part of art class so it were obligator for student to be assisted by the art teacher to do that part. The principle Idea of this project is to create a slideshow that explain the study of the element.

Element Print Making

It all started one day in Bio-Chemistry when we were learning about ions. He told us about the Table of Elements and told us we were going to be doing a project on the Elements. We had the choice of picking what Element we wanted to use. I chose Potassium. I chose potassium because of it's symbol, which is K. Then our science teacher, Mr. Best, told us we would be doing an Art project relating to our element. After that Ms. Hull, our Art teacher, told us we would be doing a Print of our element.

This assignment was a combination of art and science class. For our science class, we had to choose an element from the Periodic Table of Elements and then write a profile and presentation about our selected element. In art class, we had to cut, paint, and print images that represent our elements which I have above.

The element I choose was calcium. It's atomic number is 20 and the symbol is Ca. It is considered a soft metal with low density and is very difficult to ignite.

Printmaking Element Project

At Science Leadership Academy, the ninth grade biochemistry and art classes have begun collaborating and combing ideas for the "Printmaking Project." For the "Printmaking Project" each student was assigned three elements from the periodic table. After researching each element the student had to chose one element to focus and do their project on. I chose to based my project upon Gallium, element 31. This element is a very soft mental and boiling point is so low it can melt within seconds of being in someone's hand.

"Printmaking Element Project"

My artist statement, is my project was to sketch 3 element ideas for my element project. I had to research and describe what my element was and how I was going to make the drawing fit with the picture. As in make the picture so that it relates to my element. Our project was to make a print of our element first we had to draw 3 elements and then pick one that we liked. After we had to trace the picture on a linoeum block backwards so that when we paint over the block it will come out regular. After that we had to carve the picture out.

The project was originally for my biochemistry class. We were given the task of making a powerpoint presentation for the element we were assigned. The presentation had to include the amount of protons nuetrons and electrons its uses andits history. Then my art teacher met with my biochemistry teacher and when she found outabout the project he made she assigned a printmaking project of the element we were assigned.
