The Treatment of Man's Best Friend: America part 2

Fact for thought: A real time graph generated by Pet-Abuse.com shows that already by January 14, 2010 there have been 139 total animal abuse cases reported. The cases are abuse where animals where intentionally tied and bound.

I researched non stop for current stories to talk about in this post. What I stumbled upon in my research of current events was a short article. Art Aisner wrote the article for the Ann Arbor times. The following is my summary of whatthe article talked about.

In Milan, Michigan a woman named Heather Feist was charged with animal cruelty in October. Her 11-month old Labrador mix puppy named Lou was found in her yard. Lou had been tied up in her owner in the front yard. The collar she had on was so tight that it had become embedded in her neck, this lead to a wound and infection.

Investigators for animal cruelty stepped into the situation. They took Lou to an animal rescue where she has been treated and cared for. The pup is now healthy and being prepared for adoption. While earlier this month Ms. Feist had her pre-trial and entered her plea. Because of the situation she is still allowed to live freely but on the condition she can’t own pets (who ever gave her the puppy in the first place really should have done a good check to make sure she would be a good owner).

After I heard the article I couldn’t help but think that this young pup did not ask to be treated like this but he was. I am glade that animal rescue was able to step in and treat this puppy saving his life. But I can’t help but thinking what if they didn’t. And I also want to know what will happen to Ms. Feist, will she just get a simple fine and go about her life? Also where there people who knew what was happening but did not act upon the information sooner?

I think no matter what if someone sees something like this they should report this. Many dogs, cats and other animals aren’t as fortunate and saved. If you see something you need to speakout about it and report to your local animal rescue or even your local authorities. We always here about needing to speak out when we see cases like these but how many people actually?

BILL TRACKING 11/ 23/ 09

H.R.18 on controlled substances - introduced- this bill is not going anywhere... last action- May 21, 2009

Senate bill 27- is not going anywhere- last action ([08/02/2007 — S Referred to Judiciary.])

Reflect on:
The current situation for the health care bill in the Senate. What is happening? What happened over the weekend? What is the path forward for potential passage?

Obama and his administration is choosing people from the republican side to seek support for this bill to be passed. The two moderate Republican senators from Maine, Susan Collins and Olympia J. Snowe are the leading republicans in support of this bill. On saturday, they had the result for the party-line vote of 60 to 39 votes. Now they are having a full health care debate. In my opinion, this bill have fighting chance to be passed.

Election Day 2009 For Narayan El

Today when I went out to the polling facility, I quickly noticed that the election scenario this year was hardly like that of last year at all. There were no lines, and not a huge amount of people streaming in and out of the facility. The only similarity between this and last year's election that I saw was that the same people were overseeing/facilitating the voting process, such as Ms. Terry. Connor. From what I understand, today's election scene is much less active than last year's because citizens are voting for individuals for positions that aren't as high as president and vice president. For example, here in Pennsylvania, the election was for Supreme Court judges/justices, the retention of already serving Supreme Court officials, and also for election judges, which Terry was one of the candidates for. So, I would say that because less authoritative figures are being elected today, everyone isn't't as interested in the election, making the voter turnout  lower and causing the facilities to receive less activity. In New Jersey, however, the new governor is being elected, so I would assume the activity is of a higher level over there. For Pennsylvania, it's simply a drop in the frequency of business regarding this year's election due to decreased priority in people's eyes.

What A Waste!

About how much does America or any other country waste when it comes down to food? A whole lot, in an interview a guy name Tom Smith, an anthropologist who’s been studying food waste for the pass 10 years states that about 9 billion kilos of food is wasted each year. And this waste comes from convenience stores are running about 26%, fast food restaurants about 10%, regular restaurants, full service sit down restaurants about 4%. Supermarkets are very efficient - less than 1% loss rates. When you look at their garbage it looks really high but that's because they handle a lot of food.
It also states that households lose about 450 billion pounds, the retail food industry about 54 billion pounds and we haven't fully calculated the exact weight of all the farm losses at this point but it's runs somewhere around $25 to $30 billion. If we calculated all the waste that we make we could possibly feed other countries with it.
But the question is why is so much food being wasted? It is stated, “The core reason, and it's all the way through from the farms to the retail industry to the household, is that Americans have lost touch with food. We have been away from the farm for so long that it's not something that we consciously think about, it's just there.” Said by Tom Smith. This is true when you go back in to time when everyone was farming or getting their supplies from farms. However if we go back to farming are our people who are starving now still be starving or will they eat? The food we waste here has to stop, but how does it. We waste a huge amount of food here and don’t even know it. The problem is we have too much food. Since we have too much why not give it away!
