History Benchmark
Submitted by kcarden on Thu, 11/20/2008 - 03:15.
Our History Benchmark was to plan/host a party for King Tut himself. We had to think as if we were in his time, we had to plan a Summer Solstice. We had to make King Tut feel welcome and accommodate to his needs. We had to make sure everything was just perfect. The Food had to e perfect, security, lodging and all.
For my project I worked in a group of 4. The group contained myself, Natikwa G., Maxine H., Anwar A.-Q. For my portion of the project I had the role of organizer and caterer. I made sure all the menus had food that were related to King Tut's home. I organized parts of the Parade and Dinner's. Trying to make King Tut not feel home-sick was a test but I made it work.

For our Quarter 1 Benchmark in science we had to research a scientist. Not just plain research like age, name, death date, and invention. Our research was based on questions. One question was, "How did your scientist's work affect future scientists?" So it wasn't simple research it was a connection to modern scientists.
For my project I worked in a group. The group was made of Natikwa Goodwin and I. We had to research Galileo Galilei. He invented the telescope, but more so made improvements on it. For our project we made a fact sheet, with simple facts, a slide show of his accomplishments, and a skit for bonus points. People seemed to enjoy our presentation.
English Benchmark

For our English Benchmarks we had to write a 5 paragraph essay. We had to choose a theme to write about. Our themes and choices came form the book The Odyssey. We had to include a quote in every paragraph with no excuses. Our quotes had to be good and not so obvious. It also had to meet all requirements. "Your 5 paragraph essay must be 5 paragraphs long!" says Mr. Kay.
For my essay I chose to write about gender roles in the book. I also talked about society and it's equalitty. The basis of my whole paper was basically, "If men can do it, why can't women?" I talked about how it was wrong and unjust for their society and ours too, to be that way.
Spanish Benchmark

For our Spanish bench mark, our task was to make a brochure. The brochure was to contain all Spanish words. If oyu had any English in there you lost points. The goal for our brochure was to make it professional and easy to read. The test was, if someone didn't speak Spanish would they understand your brochure?
For my project I made my brochure as simple as possible. I made it that way so it could be understood and I could get a good grade. The project was kind of like a "Spanish for Dummies" but in a nicer way. To express things in my brochure I used smiley faces and pictures. Making it visual is what made it plain and understandable.

1.Designing Your Dream House
Have you ever dreamed about being an architect? Do you consider yourself organizationally proficient? Do you enjoy decorating your house with comfy furniture, cool new appliances that can talk to you, or vibrant colored wall hangings? Are you an insanely creative thinker? Do you just want your math teacher to get to the point and let you know what Benchmark Project #1 is all about? Ok, ok…I’ll get to the point but brace yourself because this is going to be a fun challenge.
In unit one we studied ratios and proportions as well as the relationship between life-sized objects and scaled down models of these objects. Yes, the concepts of scales and scale factors are at the heart of your first benchmark assignment.
Sierpinski Triangle

I am Kyla Carden and I am doing this project for my Algebra 1 class. My whole class split up into groups and researched different sequence. My group was made up of Jasmine, Will F., Jason, and myself. Our group was assigned the Sierpinski Triangle. Waclaw Sierpinski founded the Sierpinski Triangle. The Sierpinski Triangle is a geometric pattern that is formed by connecting the middle points of the sides of the triangle. When you do this you create 4 triangles. You subtract the middle triangle at the bottom from the sequence and so on, and so on. This sequence contains an infinite amount of triangles. Although this applies to geometry it has an arithmetic formula, which is (n) = 3^(n-1).
My election reaction

This years presidential election left me in awe. It felt like a dream. I still can't believe that America actually voted for an African-American president elect. This whole race has made my out look on life different. I see things from a point of view that once was hopeless that is now optimistic. This election has left me thinking that one day, just maybe, the world will change.
When I watched President elect Barack Obama's speech I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness. When Barack Obama started speaking I started crying. I was astonished when I saw the first black president of the United States. This whole election left me in wonderment. I thought to my self, "This is a beautiful thing, change really is now!"
