Women Education In Afghanistan (Reflective Post)
Submitted by abowen on Wed, 02/17/2010 - 15:38.
I am really passionate about the empowerment of women all over the world especially Afghan women. But I am truly tired of this topic now that I’m on my 8th post. After writing my first five posts I began to get bored because it seems like all the information are becoming repetitive. I’m not really taking in any new info.
What's the point of rape?
Submitted by cabdulbaki on Thu, 02/11/2010 - 17:13.
Rape is an ubiqutous crime that we hear about everyday and everywhere. Women and young chidren are raped frequently. Sharon Supriya informs us that women in the United States are raped every 6 minutes.Another group of women who are constantly raped are prostitutes.
A prostitute can be defined as a person (usually women) who sells their body for money. If a women is willing to sell a man her body for money in exchange why would a man/or group of men rape her?
82% of women are raped in prostitution. But the question is why, Why are prostitutes raped?
Perhaps the reasoning is similar to any other reasons why women and young girls are raped.
According to Sharon Supriya's article Why Men Rape?
Men rape for the following reasons:
To get rid of frustration-Punishing women who are not being feminie with their thoughts or how they work.
Right to control-Rape in this situation is about having more control and power it is not about the sex.
Biological Reasons- flooded with hormones usually occurs with teenage boys.
Prostittues do not report being raped because they are afraid the "pimp" "john" will come back and do it again. A prostitute's life is a nonstop routine the same things happen to them all the time.
Linda Lowen states in her article:
Prostituted women have long been considered
"fair game" for sexual harassment, rape, gang-rape, "kinky" sex,
robbery, and beatings....A 1991 study by the Council for Prostitution
Alternatives, in Portland, Oregon, documented that 78 percent of 55
prostituted women reported being raped an average of 16 times annually
by their pimps and 33 times a year by johns. Twelve rape complaints
were made in the criminal justice system and neither pimps nor johns
were ever convicted. These prostitutes also reported being "horribly
beaten" by their pimps an average of 58 times a year. The frequency of
beatings...by johns ranged from I to 400 times a year. Legal action was
pursued in 13 cases, resulting in 2 convictions for "aggravated
assault."
The 1990 Florida Supreme Court Gender Bias Report states that
"prostitution is not a victimless crime... Prostitute rape is rarely
reported, investigated, prosecuted or taken seriously."
Whether prostitution is legal or not what happens to a prostitute should be taken as a crime, if we let women in prostitution get raped we are encouarging men all over the world that rape in general is "ok" when the truth is it traumatizies young women and girls, even if they are in the "prostitution business."
Abortion: Planned Parenthood
Submitted by treid on Fri, 02/05/2010 - 03:56.
What IS Planned Parenthood?
Planned Parenthood is a health care provider, educaton and advocate.
What does Planned Parenthood DO?
Planned Parenthood provideshealth car, sex education and worldwide
information.
Planned Parenthood practices in-clinic abortion procedures. These
procedures are said to be "safe and effective" to women terminating
pregnancies.
Are any abortions really "safe and effective?"
Physicians For Life states, "Since the Supreme Court's 1793 Roe and Doe
decisions, at least hundreds of women have died from what pro-abortion group
insist on calling "safe and legal" abortions." According to Moments In Time,
abortions kill atleast 70,000 women a year.
What does an illegal abortion look like?

Traffickers

Human Traffickers: People who participate in buying and selling humans and their labor.
- Investors- fund trafficking
- Recruiters- find victims
- Transporters- facilitate the transnational movement of victims
- Corrupt Public Officials- obtain unlawful travel documentation or accept bribes for victims to enter and exit countries illegally
- Informers- investigate immigration systems and procedures to avoid apprehension
- Supporting Personnel and Specialists- provide accommodation
- Debt-Collectors- collect fees
- Money Movers- launder proceeds of trafficking
Traffickers may operate as individuals, families, or organized groups of criminals. Indirect beneficiaries such as: retail, distribution and advertising companies and consumers, facilitate them. Both men and women can take part in the operation of trafficking.
Human Trafficking: Facts
Traffickers transport their victims across borders or engage the in the act within one country. Often, the traffickers and victims share the same nationality. Traffickers are driven by high profits and low risks. For one to become a trafficker, they must be willing to exploit vulnerable people and work by the demand of cheap labor and commercial sex.

Difference between Child abuse and Discipline
Submitted by aleong on Thu, 01/28/2010 - 22:23.
![]()

Many folks are confused about the difference between discipline and child abuse. Abuse and discipline are not the same. A light spanking seems to be okay in this country but some parents go the extra mile.
A helpful chart from chilabuseeffects.com:
| » Demonstrates anger and hostility. | » Demonstrates love and affection. |
| » Make child listen. | » Teach child right from wrong. |
| » Teach child that decisions are at the whim of the caregiver. | » Teach child to make healthy choices for him/herself and prepare child for eventual independence. |
| » Caregiver has all the power; child is given no respect. | » Based on a balance of power and mutual respect. |
| » Involves humiliation. | » Does not involve humiliation. |
| » Requires submission. | » Does not require submission. |
According to child-abuse-effects.com " In January, 2004, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld Section 43 of the Criminal Code, stating parents had the right to spank their children without fear of being charged with a criminal offence. But this spanking law has some new restrictions. The law now states that spanking is permitted with children between the ages of 2 years and 12 years, that the use of weapons like belts and paddles are prohibited, that strikes to the face and head are also prohibited, and that only reasonable force can be administered. "
And if adults still can't distinguish the difference between abuse and discipline or flatly just don't care. They could suffer sever consequences because according to policyalmanac.org, "Child abuse in the United States is principally the responsibility of states and local governments. Each of the 50 states has enacted laws defining child abuse and maltreatment, determining when outside intervention is required, and establishing administrative and judicial structures to deal with maltreatment when it is identified."
Possible Penalties
• Jail time
• Probation and electronic monitoring
• Parole
• Lifetime requirement to resister as a child sexual offender with sexual abuse charges
• Mandatory anger management classes or parenting classes
• Fines and court costs
• Termination of parental rights
• Removal of the children from the home until court ordered programs are completed
• Supervised access with the children or child

Beat It
Submitted by dsample on Sat, 01/23/2010 - 01:08.
In urban communities people would like to neglect the fact that there is gang violence. However fact of the matter is the issue does exsist. Not only has the people in the urban community noticed the issue but the entertainment world has as well. Hollywood has been able to portray gang violence in:
• Music videos
• Movies
• Television
In 1983 Michael Jackson released his hit song and video "Beat It" from his greatest album of all time "Thriller". The song and video discussed the issues of gang wars. "You have to show them that you're really not scared you're playin' with your life, this ain't no truth or dare they'll kick you, then they beat you, then they'll tell you it's fair so beat it." It's said best when Jackson said the two words "beat it" yet it would've been best if people actually listened.
The Outsiders by author S.E. Hinton is in my own opinion the best book turned movie about a war between two gangs. The book was about the gangs "The Socs" who were the rich kids and "The Greasers" who the poor kids who go into an all out war when Johnny kills one of the Socs' out of self defense to defend his friend Pony Boy. The novel touches on the issues of
• Gang Violence
• Prejudice
• Being wanted by the law
By far the one of the best and most moving movies of all times "Boyz N the Hood" touched on the issue of gangs in, what is now South Los Angeles, South Central California. The film opened eyes for people on the issue of gang violence. In the film the four kids in the movie were exposed to the issues of "the hood" at a young age however two of the kids wanted something better for themselves. In order to get out you had to survive and be smart. As well as lucky if possible.

Throughout the past week i have broken down my topic of focus to Children Affect by Domestic Violence. This has ganged my interest because during my research I've learned that studies show that children have a much greater affect of Domestic Violence then an adult thats being a abused or the abuser themselves. The children affected by Domestic Violence are the ones that end up having the long term issues from being faced with being in a violent environment. Most people say those who are faced with Domestic Violence are those who need detrimental asstaintace in dealing with there past i say the best way to relieve the pain of domestic violence is to no be involved or preform Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence usually occurs from anger, fear and a persons past but there are alternative methods to dealing with Domestic Violence such as talking and separation.
"Children who have grown up with domestic violence have witnessed poor behavior by adults and will tend to use that same behavior when dealing with their own problems. The children may be hurtful or disruptive when they encounter problems. The adults around them must learn to be consistent and patient when trying to change this behavior. Maintaining consistent limits and encouraging better behavior can help" ( Arizona Supreme Court ).

Global Warming: The Melting of Glaciers
Submitted by dmartin on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 16:07.
What is an ice glacier?
A glacier is a large block of ice formed from falling snow. Glaciers are created in cold areas for example Alaska. Only 10% of the Earth is occupied by glaciers. "Glaciers store 75% of the worlds fresh water."(http://nsidc.org/glaciers/quickfacts.html)
Scientist have recently discovered that the year 2010 will be the worlds warmest year due to global warming. "According to the Met Office, man-made climate change will be a factor and natural weather patterns would contribute less to 2010's temperature than they did in 1998, the current warmest year in the 160-year record."(Met Office) As the years go on the global temperature will increase constantly. Scientist predict that by 2011 , the Earth's climate will increase 0.6 C warmer.Gladly the accusation made by scientist in 2007 that the Alaska glaciers will melt has not been proven. The accusation made by scientist was that by the year 2035 , the Himalayan Glaciers would melt causing major floods and rise in sea level.
The cause of the melting glaciers are:
- The INCREASE of the global temperature
- Collection of dust in the air caused by volcanic eruptions Pollution and chemicals which causes the rise in temperature the melts the glaciers
- Burning of oil
Animals are at a high risk of extinction because of many animals need to live in a cold environment. However since the Earth's temperature in annually increasing , it's getting too warm for the animals to live.
Making the Day Brighter

We see them laying around on corners year round and as time passes, the amount of homeless people seems to slowly expand. However, majority of us choose to walk past their desperate faces without any consideration acting as if their existance was worthless. You ask why should you feel responsible?
Well we live in a capitialist society meaning some people have more and the rest have less.
In America, even those who have earned their wealth have gained it off the help of others. The rich need the poor in order to survive.
On any given night in America, anywhere between 700,000 to 2 million people are homless, according to the estimates of the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty.
That appears to be an unhealthy amount of homeless people in a country where individuals are suppose to reach for the stars*.
However,
it has occured to me why the amount is increasing especially
since the United States is in such conditions. When majority of the
people look at a homeless person laying in the street, their first
thought is get a job!
My theory is if you have no idea who that person is or what their background is, you are in no place to make judgement calls on what they can and cannot do. Little do you know how difficult their lives actually are.
Then one may say that a lot of the homeless people are frauds who are "drug addicts" and begging for money only to abuse it. Personally I have been a victim of their fraud myself.
My friend and I were walking around the city and on an extremely cold winter day. We saw a man who had barely anything to keep himself warm and had the most depressing look I've ever seen. We gave him $5 and maybe that would help him with atleast something even thought it was not one of the biggest donations.
As we turned the corner and looked back, he was buying cigarettes off another man and my friend and I were quite disappointed. However, we did our job and tried to be generous. Do I still feel responsible for the poor? Yes.
There are simple ways to help that I can help them without feeling like I'm being mislead because there are millions of people who actually do NEED THE HELP. I usually do not have problems giving change and maybe a little snack. Knowing that by giving someone just a 50 cents bag of chips can make their day a whole a lot better. Why wouldn't anybody want to? Giving even small bits of food is safe because they are living on the streets, they are probably hungry and by giving them food you shouldn't have to worry about it going down the drain.
Recently, I gave someone a bag of chips and they would not stop thanking me and repeating "Bless you child, you're so generous, now I have food for they day." I felt really good about myself knowing that I had made someones day.
People have been gifted with a healthy and safe life. Even by giving a homeless something small, you can brighten their day.
Alcoholism Diagnosis
Submitted by smillwood on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 03:07.
Some people have trouble determining whether they have an addiction to alcohol.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV) lists seven criteria that may indicate a substance dependence:
- Tolerance
- Withdrawal
- Use of the substance more often or in larger amounts than intended
- Unsuccessful efforts to control use
- Losing a lot of time to the substance
- Giving up important activities
- Continued use despite negative effects
According to the DSM-IV, experiencing any three of these things within the same year are indicative of a substance dependence.
One tool that is sometimes used to guage a person's relationship with alcohol is the "CAGE" questionnaire.
"The CAGE questionnaire is commonly used to determine the risk of alcohol-related problems:
| C - | Have you ever felt that you should Cut down on your drinking? |
| A - | Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking? |
| G - | Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking? |
| E - | Have you ever had an Eye opener - a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover? |
One "yes" answer indicates a risk for abuse and/or dependence alcohol
use problems; more than one "yes" indicates a high likelihood." (HealthCommunities.com)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Prostitution
Submitted by cabdulbaki on Fri, 01/22/2010 - 01:20.
The definition of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that developes after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occured or was threatened.
- PTSD can happen to anyone, more women than men expierene PTSD due to certain events in their lives.
- Problems that also occur when having PTSD are depression, misuse of alcohol, medicine and other substances and other anxiety disorders.
According to Medicine Net, the following symptoms should happen in order to confirm that post traumatic stress disorder is happening to the person. These symptoms should happen repeatedly over a course of one month.
- Reliving the event through upsetting thoughts, nightmares or flashbacks, or having very strong mental and physical reactions
if something reminds the person of the event.
- Avoiding activities, thoughts, feelings or
conversations that remind the person of the event; feeling numb to one's
surroundings; or being unable to remember details of the event.
- Having a loss of interest in important activities,
feeling all alone, being unable to have normal emotions or feeling that there
is nothing to look forward to in the future may also be experienced.
- Feeling that one can never relax and must be on guard
all the time to protect oneself, trouble sleeping, feeling irritable,
overreacting when startled, angry outbursts or trouble concentrating.
Most people who usually suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are people who were in rape, war, physical/ sexually abuse, witnessing the death of a loved one, a natural disaster, durgs, and many more events in someone's life.
Prostitutes suffer an extreme amount of PTSD because of the awful things they go through everyday. Young girls and women are constantly getting abused, raped, tortured, addicted to drugs, and many other types of terrifying acts that cause this disorder in their future.
Studies in 1998 all show results for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder across Thailand, USA, Turkey, Zambia and South Africa. These studies included, men, transgender and transvestites, and transexual prostitutes but 83% of them were women.
A study written by Norra Macready out of 475 people interviewed in these countries 67% of them had PTSD and 92% of them wanted to quit being a prostitution.
Another study done Melissa Farley and Howard Barkan 68% of the people they interviewed had PTSD and 88% of them wanted to quit being a prostitute.
The results coming from both of these articles are similar to one another and the interviews happened in the same places. All of these prostitutes who were interviewed each were faced with physical abuse, rape, drug addiction/use, alcohol and many memories and events that caused them to recieve PTSD.
Prostitutes have no way of relieving this type of disorder, it sticks with them forever because they never seem to go through a day were none of those following things happen to them.
Child abuse doesn't just happen at home.
Submitted by aleong on Sat, 01/16/2010 - 20:16.

According to cnn.com, A 14-year old student in a special education classroom in Texas, Cedric was living with a foster family because of a history of neglect, including malnutrition. But on this day in 2002, his teacher tried to punish him by withholding food, despite the abuse he had suffered as a young child.
Cedric's teacher delayed his lunch for hours to discipline him for refusing to do his work. When he wouldn't comply, his teacher put him in a face down restraint and sat on him in front of his classmates. Cedric said repeatedly that he could not breathe. He died minutes later on the classroom floor.

Its hard to believe that there aren't any federal laws to stop this from happening.
The articles also states, According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office, over the last 20 years there have been hundreds of allegations of school personnel using restraint and seclusion in abusive ways on children. It's happening disproportionately to students with disabilities, often at the hands of untrained staff. Many of these students bear haunting physical and emotional scars. And in a number of cases, students have died.
"Local newspapers recount bone-chilling stories of schoolchildren tied to chairs, or with their mouths taped shut, sometimes locked in dark closets, or pinned to the floor for hours at a time. If parents treat their kids this way, it's considered a criminal offense."
The Children's Health Act of 2000 regulates how and when restraint and seclusion can be used in medical settings and community facilities. But classrooms, where students spend the majority of their day, are exempt.
In the 2007-2008 school year in California alone, the GAO reports, there were more than 14,300 cases of restraint, seclusion and other "emergency interventions." We don't know how many of these merited real emergencies.
"Schools are places for our children to learn, grow, and thrive." If that is true, we should all help and make it a better and safer environment for children.
Effects of Child abuse
Submitted by aleong on Sat, 01/16/2010 - 19:49.

All types of child abuse leaves scars on children that stays with them for lifetimes. Yes the scars are physical but they are also skin deep. Those scars will stay with them for the rest of their life. Child abuse has long lasting effects throughout life. It damaging a child’s sense of self, ability to have healthy relationships, and ability to function at home, at work and at school.
Did you know that up to 37 percent of female prison inmates and 14
percent of male prison inmates were once victims of child abuse?
Effects of child abuse and neglect according to helpguide.org:
- Lack of trust and relationship difficulties.
If you can’t trust your parents, who can you trust? Abuse by a primary
caregiver damages the most fundamental relationship as a child—that you
will safely, reliably get your physical and emotional needs met by the
person who is responsible for your care. Without this base, it is very
difficult to learn to trust people or know who is trustworthy. This can
lead to difficulty maintaining relationships due to fear of being
controlled or abused. It can also lead to unhealthy relationships
because the adult doesn’t know what a good relationship is. - Core feelings of being “worthless” or “damaged.” If
you’ve been told over and over again as a child that you are stupid or
no good, it is very difficult to overcome these core feelings. You may
experience them as reality. Adults may not strive for more education,
or settle for a job that may not pay enough, because they don’t believe
they can do it or are worth more. Sexual abuse
survivors, with the stigma and shame surrounding the abuse, often
especially struggle with a feeling of being damaged. - Trouble regulating emotions.
Abused children cannot express emotions safely. As a result, the
emotions get stuffed down, coming out in unexpected ways. Adult
survivors of child abuse can struggle with unexplained anxiety,
depression, or anger. They may turn to alcohol or drugs to numb out the
painful feelings.

And to think this is only the year 2007. Younger than 1 year almost makes up half of the pie chart. I'm also surprise that the percentage for 12-17 are less than the 8-11. According to aaets.org, Pre-teens was on a shooting spree killing classmates and a teacher. A 12 year-old is charged with sexually assaulting an 11 year-old girl in school. Children are threatening to report their parent(s) as child abusers when the parents attempt to appropriately discipline them. That was such a tragic event. Harming anyone in certain way to point where the person isn't sane anymore, is really really such a sad and scary thing.
Negligence
Submitted by rhaq on Sat, 01/16/2010 - 06:18.
People need to realize, not everybody is as fortunate as them
My parents are both substitute teachers and hearing their stories about students neglecting books and opportunities are absolutely painful. My dad talks about how kids throw their books out the window because in their mind, the books are worth nothing when there are so many children in this world begging to even get a chance to look at book. My mom talks about the kids that constantly skip class and have the "I don't care about school" look on their faces need to learn that there are kids who beg for school. The world is a pretty confusing place. Some people are too rich and some are too poor. However, I find no solution for this to be completely solved.
I recently read a post by a women known as, Melissa L. Smith who mocked the poor saying:
"Gee, I have no income, no running water, no education, no job, I am a drain in society myself...say...let's have about 10 children that we can't feed, clothe, educate, provide medical attention for and will probably die before the age of 10. "
Here's statement threw me off completely. That is a perfect example of ignorance. Majority of those poeple do not CHOOSE to live that lifestyle.
- They cannnot find income or job
- How can they have running water without an income
- Third World Countries cannot afford education
- How can they prevent themselves from having children when they cannot afford any sort of protection
- How are they going to feed and provide for them when they cannot even raise themselves
However, some people still differ. According to Yahoo News!, Mr. Robertoson's theory. His theory is that Haitian slaves made a "pact with the devil" 200 years ago in order to free themselves from the hated clutches of Napoleaon Bonaparte's regime-resulting in a curse that led to the destruction of much of Port-au- Prince and a massive loss of life in Tuesday's earthquake- got the usual chuckles of disbelief among local intelligentsia about American Culture.
Think about that statement for a minute. Haiti has just lost thousads of lives and thats the first thing you have to say?
Haiti was one of the hardest countries to live in because its poverty rate is already extremely high has just been brought down completely. People are trying to do as much as they can but there is just so much you can do and no matter what, lives will be lost.
We may not be able to STOP poverty completely, but we can do things like not make hatred comments that offend so many people, or donate, and overall be thankful. Take the life you have been given for granted because some people will never have that.

When i finally got my topic i was already supposed to have a few blog posts up already. So, now i have two of my informative post up and i just need one more to be up to date. Than there is next weeks post which i have ideas for already.
I was looking at all the topics we had on the board and none of them stood out to me, than i thought problems in the world and Stem Cells research just popped into my head. I went home look up all this information. I got pictures i actually got a little carried away. Alot of the info was point less, i just found out the main things like what are stem cells and where can they be found.
I think i might go into the different parts of stem cells for my next blog posts.
Death and Gangs are bestfriends
Submitted by dsample on Sat, 01/16/2010 - 01:08.
With numerous perks being in a gang comes with many opportunities. Such as:
• Violence
• Drugs
• Jail
• Death
In the United States murder is nothing that American people isn't unfamiliar with. In 2006 death by a firearm was the second leading cause of death to a person of the age group 10-24, third to the age groups 25-34, and fourth to the age groups of 5-9 or 35-44. In the late 1990s Philadelphia was the second leading City in the country in homicides. Washington D.C. being the first and Dallas, Texas being the third.
Gang related deaths in places like Philadelphia is nothing new. However gang related deaths is something that needs to be something of the past in places like Philadelphia. Mayor Michael Nutter said during his campaign "If crime and homicides do not decrease I will not run for a second term." His vow has begun, so lets start ours.
Human Trafficking: The Traffickers' Expectations
Submitted by ahousley on Sat, 01/16/2010 - 00:14.
Human Trafficking is the second largest and fastest growing criminal industry in the world (About the Polaris Project Action Center).
Traffickers exploit their victims and instill in them the fear that authorities will prosecute or deport them if they seek help for their situations. Some victims work in legal and illegal, but mostly dangerous areas such as: sweatshops and brothels. Documenting human trafficking cases involve men, women and children as victims. Children are forced to beg for money in cities, work in carpet shops, and engage in pornography and sexual acts with adults. Women are expected to assume the role of domestic servants, strip club dancers, and prostitutes. Agricultural work and work on fishing vessels is left to the male victims. (Human Trafficking 10)
“More than 17,500 victims are smuggled into the United States each year and put to work as domestic servants or sex workers.”
“According to the Polaris Project Action Center, the United States is a prime trafficking location for victims largely from Mexico, East Asia, and Africa.”

Pbs.org says "Block by blog, Child By Child. That's how Geoffrey Canada has set out to save at-risk children in some of the most devastated neighborhoods of Central Harlem."
In 1970, he founded the Harlem Children's Zone, a non-profit organization that's been called one of the most ambitious social experiments of the century. Canada, 56, says his goal is to offer these children all they need to succeed in an ever-changing competitive world. It's a lofty dream, but one Canada has devoted his life to and one he says the public school system has so far been unable to accomplish.

Canada's organization provides more then 10,000 children that are at risk providing them social and educational oppurtunities all at no cost.
What the world needs in order to help poverty is more people like Geoffrey Canada.
So far, it seems, the formula is working with approximately 95 percent of the kids who attend goin on to college. And other cities, including Baltimpre, are taking note deliberating copycat programs in their own at-risk neighborhoods.
The main problem is that the rich people are too rich and the poor people are too poor. What the world needs is a bigger heart because the rich have used their wealth for useless reasons. I think the problem with Americans is that many of them are apathetic. Poeple like Canada are trying to give children who are poor an opportunity to live their dreams and reach their goals.
Joseph Addison once said " Education is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. At home, a friend, abroad, an introduction, in solitude a solace and in society an ornament. It chastens vice, it guides virtue, it gives at once grace and government to genius. Without it, what is man? A splendid slave, a reasoning savage. "
Like Addison said, if people are educated, an entire new world is opened up for them and more people like Geoffrey Canada could help the young generation living through poverty.
My Father who not only grew up in a poor village but he also managed to go to college. He completed school and got a degree and everyday he tells me to continue studying hard because education is key. If he did not make all those sacfrices, he would have not been educated and my family would not be standing in this condition today. If I was given the opportunity, I would try and help as many people finish school so atleast they can live an easier life.

Child Victims of Trafficking
Submitted by ahousley on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 03:50.
Traffickers often convince parents to separate from their children by the use of false promises of schooling and prosperity. However, in some cases parents have an active role in the trafficking of children. Albanian Roma parents bring their children to Greece and force them to beg or sell goods on the street. “According to some [Non-governmental organizations] NGOs, Roma parents in Greece also rent or sell their children to third parties or forced labor.” A study held by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2007, found that some Cambodian parents sell their children into prostitution or domestic servitude to repay debts. “In Niger, boys trafficked for forced cattle herding sometimes escape their employers and return to their parents.” The young men have clear signs of physical and psychological abuse. Nonetheless, parents return their sons against their will. (Trafficking in Persons Report, 7)
Children and Domesic Violence

Domestic violence affects every member of the family, including the children. Family violence creates a home environment where children live in constant fear.
Not only doesn't Domestic Violence affect adults but it also affects the children who see and experence its affects second hand . In my opinion children are affect by Domestic Violence in a much more harsh way because of there lack of knowlege about Domestic Violence its much more difficult. Some say that a child experenced the domestic violence second hand is the same as a form of abuse.
Dynamics of domestic violence are unhealthy for children:

Many more of these countries can be found at Prostitution Procon.org.
Though all of these countries fit into different categories when legalizing illegalizing and having a limited legalizing about more than half of them of the countries do not allow brothel owning or pimping.
Though prostitution is illegal in these countries they seem to have an extremely huge problem dealing with the fact that it going on. Prostitution brothels, trafficking, and sex toursim all seem to add on to the rates increasing.
There are still plenty of debates going on now about wether countries should legalizing prostitution an article has been written about the opinions of Professor Janice Raymond and Dr. Melissa Ditmore, both who are working hard to make prostitution business a safer place for everyone including the women who are working the businesss. They both handle the situation from different aspects and are using different methods to help this issue.
Professor Janice Raymond is not infatuated with the idea of legalizing prostiution this quote helps summarize her opinion on the subject.
"There is no evidence that legalization of prostitution makes things
better for women in prostitution. It certainly makes things better for
governments who legalize prostitution and of course, for the sex
industry, both of whom enjoy increased revenues." (Keane)
Dr. Melissa Ditmore agrees with the idea that prostitution should be decriminalized.
"Prostitution should be decriminalized. This would remove prostitution
from the criminal code and thereby render prostitution akin to other
businesses. It’d be taxed and subject to business requirements." (Keane)

The Treatment of Man's Best Friend: America part 2
Submitted by pwoods on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 01:57.
Fact for thought: A real time graph generated by Pet-Abuse.com shows that already by January 14, 2010 there have been 139 total animal abuse cases reported. The cases are abuse where animals where intentionally tied and bound.
I researched non stop for current stories to talk about in this post. What I stumbled upon in my research of current events was a short article. Art Aisner wrote the article for the Ann Arbor times. The following is my summary of whatthe article talked about.
In Milan, Michigan a woman named Heather Feist was charged with animal cruelty in October. Her 11-month old Labrador mix puppy named Lou was found in her yard. Lou had been tied up in her owner in the front yard. The collar she had on was so tight that it had become embedded in her neck, this lead to a wound and infection.
Investigators for animal cruelty stepped into the situation. They took Lou to an animal rescue where she has been treated and cared for. The pup is now healthy and being prepared for adoption. While earlier this month Ms. Feist had her pre-trial and entered her plea. Because of the situation she is still allowed to live freely but on the condition she can’t own pets (who ever gave her the puppy in the first place really should have done a good check to make sure she would be a good owner).
After I heard the article I couldn’t help but think that this young pup did not ask to be treated like this but he was. I am glade that animal rescue was able to step in and treat this puppy saving his life. But I can’t help but thinking what if they didn’t. And I also want to know what will happen to Ms. Feist, will she just get a simple fine and go about her life? Also where there people who knew what was happening but did not act upon the information sooner?
I think no matter what if someone sees something like this they should report this. Many dogs, cats and other animals aren’t as fortunate and saved. If you see something you need to speakout about it and report to your local animal rescue or even your local authorities. We always here about needing to speak out when we see cases like these but how many people actually?
Domestic Violence in other counties
Submitted by dbuckholtz on Fri, 01/15/2010 - 01:34.
In life anger is something that everyone goes through at one point or another but in some cases this anger goes beyond a level it needs to these cases are domestic violence. Domestic Violence is a major issue everywhere espeically in situations where the victum cant break away from the offender. In may counties such as China there are laws that prevent Domestic Violence but there are also marriage laws prevent divorivce.
* In India, 40 percent of adult women reported physical assaults by a male partner (Gregori)
* 38 percent of Korean women reported battering by their spouse in the past year (Gregori)
The Minister of Justice in Brazal has been tryin to control Domestic Violence in her county because the rates of a man abusing a woman are very high and seen to continusly rising.
* In Brazil, according to San Pablo Catholic University, only 2 percent of criminal complaints for domestic violence against women lead to conviction of the aggressor (Gregori)
Laws need to change in other counties as well as the United States to provide a safe living environment for everyone.
The Statistics

Numbers in the prostitution world can mean many things: They can mean how much money a prostitue is making, the "pimps" "johns" etc. she has been with, the places she has worked, the beatings, drugs, threats, costs for her body and the list goes on.
According to a paper written by Annie Lobert the following information are the statistics of prostiution in the United States.
Many women and young girls begin to prostitue at extremely young ages. The average percentage of girls who join prostituion younger than the age of 18 is 42%.
Prostitution involves some of the worst violence around. These rates are not being reduced due to the fact that these girls and women who are getting beat are afraid of the "pimps" that have control over them.
- Threatened with weapon: 78%
- Physical assualt: 82%
Definition of rape in prostitution: not getting paid when having sex with the "pimp" "john".
Definition of rape outside of prostituion: "any act of sexual intercourse that is forced upon a person"
Rape: 82%
Raped 5 times or more: 73%
Current or past homlessness: 84%
Hit or beaten by a caregiver as a child unti injured or bruised: 49%
Sexually abused as a child: 65-95%
Women in the prostitution business do not tend to know the difference between rape and prostituting or could possibly not want to find a difference between them. Women might not want to find the difference because they are choosing to sell their bodies. Though it is their choosing the violence and treatment they go through everyday can be considered as rape and much more.
Drugs: 75%
Alcohol: 26%
Drugs and alcohol play an extremely large part in prostitution. Women
who are prostituting have either been exposed to these before or after they started. They also could've become prostitutes in order to
keep these habits of theirs, the money they make is used to help them
continue buying their drugs and alcohol.
Stem Cells help every one
Submitted by aseeley on Tue, 01/12/2010 - 15:22.
Stem cells can be used for many things. There are not just one or two uses, but many, Ning tells us what stem cells can go to.
- Marrow Stoma
- Bone
- Gene Delivery
- Adipose
- Cardiac Muscle
- Cartilage
- Tendon & Ligaments
- Biopharmaceuticals

The stems cells are places into each of the missing spots where you should have cells, since the stem cells are placed there the stem cells become what the missing cells were. The article titled "Souped-up stem cells rescue damaged limbs" created by Andy Coghlan, in his article he explains that stem cells can repair most tissue but they do not have the blood vessels for the new tissue. So he continues to say that "Daniel Anderson at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology exposed human bone marrow stem cells to biodegradable nanoparticles carrying the human gene for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which attracts blood vessels to injury sites." Now stem cells are untouchable.
