I'm not sure why the photos wouldn't post in here :/

Reflection: This years voting scene was a big contrast to last year. First off most voters did not even know what they were voting for when entering the voting stations. Most were faced with a list of names they pretty much had never heard, for jobs that they only partly understood what they were. They also did not have enough information to say whether or not they wanted people up for another term actually taking another term. There was not as much talk on the streets about voting. It looked/felt like almost a regular day in the city (well apart from SEPTA not running). No one was super excited to go vote, young people were not exctied to registure and vote for the first time. There were no buttons that people were wearing, no bit posters outside, and no one outside the polling station trying to make you vote for one person over the other.

Actually at the voting station there was pretty much no one there. Last year at the same time people had taken their lunch breaks and gone to attempt to vote. The line was around the corrner! This time my mom and I were the only ones voting. Although i was lucky enough to catch 3 voters coming out. One of them made the comment "well people better not be complaining about how things are run this yea, since they haven't come out to vote." When you went into the building mom and i walked right back, no waiting for AGEs in line. When we got in the room the ladies that were manning the voting stations were sitting there knitting and told us that they were wondering when we were going to show up. I told them about my assingment and they informed me that because of the big turn out last year they actually split our polling station in two. So now there are only just over 800 at moore college of art and design. "You are the 83rd person to vote today that means we have just broken a 10% voting turn out."

"Recycling in Philadelphia ." Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia. 2006. Clean Air Councel . 20 Dec. 2008 http://www.cleanair.org/recyclingalliance/rec_phila.html#4 .

Recycling Alliance of Philadelphia’s website gives great background to the recycling program in Philadelphia. There is a nice timeline of events, Information on the different ways to improve recycling in Philadelphia, random recycling facts, and the law behind recycling in Philadelphia.
This information is used to show that recycling is possible in the city. Having this information backs up the argument that people need to stop creating waste and not recycling it.

Philadelphia HealthManagement Corporation. Homeless Families Initiative of the United Way ofSoutheastern Pennsylvania. 6-7, 16-21.

Thiswas a study of homeless families in Philadelphia in 1985. It focuses on theproblems that cause homelessness. Some include substance abuse, child abuse, and mental illness. This was used in the presentation to compare Philadelphiatwenty-four years ago to now. By comparing the data it shows that homelessnessis still a problem but progress has been made in the positive direction.

Thisis a new program that focuses on housing before anything. Usually people areput into shelters and then after a couple of months get into programs to dealwith things such as substance abuse. Then after they are clean they are able toget an apartment or some other form of housing. This would usually take acouple of years to do.

Thisarticle is about a homeless veteran. The article starts off by saying that onein four homeless people are veterans. This is a chilling statistic. The peoplethat serve our country end up on the streets is a tragedy. Many of them couldnot adapt to a civilian life.

What do sports teams mean to the identity of a city?

Sports teams are a way of getting together. For the few days that we
spend celebrating it brings us closer as a city. everyones in a good
mood and people are friendly. They forget about their problems and go
celebrate with their friends and famies and the other million people who cheered with excitement as
Braid Lidge threw the winning pitch to win the world series. The Vibe
that flows throughout the city after a championship is an amazing
feeling to be apart of.

What to sports teams mean to the identity of a city?

Sports teams have a mojor role in the identity of a city.  When our city's team wins a game, or more importantly -  a series. When people come to Philadelphia, they know that the this is the home for the Phillies and that we are world champions.

Why Are Sports So Important To Our City's Identity?

The sports that mean so much to our city is because sports seem to be something that can connect with everyone all over the world. Sports is something that anyone can do and their aren't really a limit to a sport, but only the rules in the actual game. So a city's identity can be from their sportsteam and in a way if that team is great at a sport, it'll equal big braggin' rights. So overall it's just a giant ego game. But in my overall opnion I could really care less.

Philadelphia Student Union

This organization also said in the title is the Philadelphia Student Union. The unions goal is to make Philadelphia schools better turn young students into leaders by demanding better education in Philadelphia's school system. The entire union is made up of students from all over Philadelphia who make positive changes. Your job in this organization will depend on what your skills are. What I did was writing news letters in the paper. I also showed up to many actions and show up to meetings that took steps to making better schools.

The skills you might need may vary but the Union welcomes all students to be part of the Union. No skills are really neccesary but your commitment. What you'll be learning are leadership skills that can help you later on in your life. You will also be active in your community and helping pave the road to better education. I would reccommend this ILP for any person who is passionate about chaning the schools in the Philadelphia school district.

Today has been very exciting in the world of this project. In class today we did a little questionnaire about our change agents. Up until now, this has been one of my setbacks. The questions basically asked us if we had a change agent and when we were meeting with them. No one had contacted me back at that point in time, so I was left writing “N/A” on my paper. I felt defeated.
When I got home tonight, I checked my e-mail. Alas! I saw a new e-mail from a name I didn’t recognize. It was from a woman named Melissa Levy, the Director of Development at PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society). She had been replying to my original contact for a meeting time so I could present my elevator pitch. The e-mail read, “Thanks so much for your interest in saving Philadelphia's animals! I'd be happy to set up a time to meet with you in early-April.” These were the best words I could read at that moment.
Now, with a meeting time and the beginnings of an Action Plan outline, I’m back on track. I felt overwhelmed for a little, but this seemed to be what I needed to fix that. Sometimes, things take a while. Sometimes, things go well. This was a sign.

From the explanation of this project as a whole, it seems unbearable. Completely impossible. My expectations were that there was no way I could do it. When I first looked it over, I didn’t even know how or where to begin. At this point in time though, I’m pleased with the progress I’m making on this project.
Don’t get me wrong, this project is HARD. It’s REALLY hard, but I feel like I am getting somewhere. The pluses are that I feel like I am learning about my topic, I am finding some really good examples and I’m learning about a lot of different sub-issues that are covered under my topic. The things I’m struggling with so far are definitely narrowing down my topic. I think as of now, my topic is pretty large. It covers a lot. I think to move on, I really need to refine and decide exactly what I want to focus on.
I’m generally happy with how this is going so far. I think there are things I need to work on and things I need to fix, but I don’t think I’m nearly as lost as I was when I first found out about this challenge. I think the progress is going up at a steady pace. I think the obstacles are there, but not impossible. Mostly, I think that as a 10th grade English class, we are doing something different and amazing. That’s the most satisfying progress so far.

Animal Rescue: Blog 1

2/5/08

To get started with these blog entries, I want to focus on identifying the issue and the broad goal. The problem is animal rescue, animal rights and animal shelters. The problem is people. The problem is lack of respect. The problem is ignorance. The problem is people being ignorant about rescuing and helping animals.
For a long time it seemed like the solution for the problem of abused animals were shelters to put them in. As I was watching the 6 o’clock news the other night, there was a story that caught my eye. If I remember correctly, the tag line stated how many more animals were being rescued compared to 5 years ago, but how it was discovered that the animal shelters were caught abusing the animals or not caring for them to the best of their ability. This shocked me. How could it be that the place animals were taken to for savior was the thing harming them most?
The news report stated that around 5-7 years ago 10% of the animals that were abused or in danger were being put into shelters. Now that percentage was raised to 65% of animals being rescued. While that is good, a lot of the shelters seem to have too many animals to care for now. There is not enough funding available to the shelters to properly feed all of the animals, as well as not enough staff members to care for the animals properly. The shelters can sometimes be extremely dirty and with many animals being locked in a cage for days without notice. The animals can go hungry and go without proper medical attention, sometimes when vitally needed. The link to the video (http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=news/bizarre&id=5900625 ) shows how the SPCA is charging the non-profit, animal rescue agency PACCA for abuse, neglect and abandonment of some of their animals. This is just one clear example of how an agency that should be helping animals seems to only be hurting them.
This is not a solution. Yes, these animals are off the streets. Yes, these animals are out of the hands of abusive owners. But no, these animals are not being properly cared for. No, these animals do not have the proper amounts of food. No, these animals are not getting the love they should be. I want to fix this. I want to make shelters more fit for animals. I want shelters to have more funding. I want to show people, ordinary people, how easy it can be to help out an animal or a local animal shelter. I want to show people that animals are important. Animals deserve a chance too. I want to show people how they can help.
