For my science benchmark I had to write a profile on Aristotle. I had to work with a

partner his name was Joshua Martin-Corales. For this project I had to get the

background on Aristotle.

What I would have done differently is more research andbackground checks to

make sure I goteverything right. What I likedabout it was the organization and

steps I took.

For my math benchmark I had to solve a problem with mygroup.

My group members were Natalie, Shawn, and Matt.

There were many parts to the problem and everyone chose a part.

My part was toexplain the chart.

What I wouldhave done differently wouldbe a longer explenation.

science benchmark

Our history teacher is Mr. Sherif and for this benchmark we had to write about and present the story of a scientist. We had to make an application, profile and presentation. We had to work in groups, or partners rather, for this benchmark. We only had 5 minutes to present our information, which made it kind of hard to get all of the details in.

In this project, I had to work with Kyree. We did ours on Alexander Graham Bell. I made a slide show, he made the profile, and we both worked on the application, however we didn't get a chance to finish presenting our slide show because it was over 5 minutes. Other than that we didi pretty good and got an A on our benchmark.

If we were to do this again, we would’ve made the slide show shorter so that we would’ve had more time to present. We would've also divided the work between us little more fairly.

Q1 Boichem Benchmark SLA

Biochem Benchmark

My teacher Mr. Sheriff assigned a scientist from ourrequested list and work with a partner, me and my partner Mathew Schuderi gotthe scientist Niels Bohr, a physical scientist that helped build the atomicbomb during WW II and the Nazi invasion. He also discovered the Nucleus of theatom. After we were assigned NielsBohr then we had to research him, write a paper on all of his discoveries.Later we had to make a profile and make an argumentative presentation on whyour scientist should win the “ SLAWARD”. The SLAward is a fake certificate thatwe would receive for the best argument and information in our presentaion, which had to be finished less than two minutes.

Me and my partner Mathew made collaborated a lot of ideas wealso both chipped in when making the profile and a one-page bibliography abouthis life and all of his discoveries. We made a power point, that wasinformative but not boring, we tried to make it look rather hand written andold by having “ink splotches on the side of the frame. Then we hung a profile of Bohr on the wall in the hall; whichhad his life spands dates, his biggest accomplishments and a large picture ofhim. We also had to write/ fillout a from with more information on it , and uploaded the form to (Scienceleadership Academy’s online homework and assignment website).

I think that if I could ever redo my benchmark, and what Iwould do to make it better, I would try to put a little more effort in thepresentation and try to loosen up on the whole project. I would most definitelytry not to stress out over the project as much as I did this time around.

Intro: Niels Bohrwas a great man, not only was he a great scientist, teacher and husband but hewas also somewhat of a hero. You see whatwe are about to tell, and show you goes a bit beyond the regular info fromsites like Wykapedia and About .com. We will answer the question of who is Niels Bohr …

(Lifespand: 1885-1962)

In his young years he was already interested inphysiology, his dad Christian Bohr and some of his teachers had inspired him.

Later (around1903) he attended the University of Copenhagen, which is where he was awardedfor his experiment on Surface Tension by the Academy of Science in Copenhagenin the order of the Royal society. He also earned his masters and Doctorate in physiology. A little after he earned hisdegrees he began to work with great scientists of the day such as J.J. Thompsonand the great professor Rutherford!

This was allbefore he started studying the atomic structure, with out ProfessorRutherford’s help and assistance on his structure of the atoms nucleus andThompson’s discovery of the electron Niels would not have been able to takethat information and add to it in ways many people could never even wrap theirminds around.

Bohr went toEngland to examine Rutherford’s recently created model of the atoms nucleus, however the model was not perfected, along with his theory.

Bohr’sepiphany lead to his theory of the electron ring; his theory was that if therewas an atom then there had to be electrons that orbit around the atoms nucleusjust like the sun and the planets.

After hemarried Margrethe Norlund and the birth of their six sons, and then the deathof two of them; he went to work as the head of Copenhagen’s Institute ofTheoretical Physics. However, he was stopped in his work by the Nazi invasion,Niels and his family fled to Sweden for shelter and then to the U.S.

During Worldwar II Niels Bohr traveled to Alamos, New mexico to advise the scientists developing the first atomic bomb! Hereturned to Copenhagen after the war and later promoted the peaceful use ofatomic energy.

Again NielsBohr was an amazing man, and as we have just educated you has lived quite a lifeand has made some wonderful discoveries that have helped our age of science inmany ways besides theatrical science but physical science too. We believe thatfor these reasons Niels Bohr should receive the SLAward.

The Scientist: Niels Henrik David Bohr

Date of Birth/Death: October 7, 1885 - November 18, 1962

Background Information:

Borninto a Jewish/Danish family in the town of Copenhagen, Denmark to ChristianBohr and Ellen Adler. His father was a physicist at The University OfCopenhagen and he interested Niels Bohr in his work. After he received hisMasters and Doctorate degree in 1909, he began working with ProfessorRutherford on the atomic structure in 1911 and 1912. He married later in 1912.

Education:

Attended Gammelholm Grammar School andthe University of Copenhagen where he received his all of his degrees.

The Era/Time: What was happening in the world at thistime?

Duringthe time of Niels Bohr and his experiments, the progressive era was takingplace. The Progressive Era started when many journalist drew attention to theissues of child labor, corruption, lynching, and bad business practices. Thisall led to four constitutional amendments, the right for women to vote, tariffswere lowered, income tax taking role, banking control, prohibition of alcoholicdrinks, ect. The new laws and rights affected Bohr the same as if affectedeveryone else, which made people more successful by opening up opportunity.World War One & Two had also taken place during Niels Bohr's life. Bohr hadto flee Denmark during World War Two because of the Nazi Invasion. Due to thewars, Bohr became interested in the development of nuclear bombs, which waseventually changed because he realized the destruction such a bomb could cause.Rutherford's Quantum theory that had been published at the time interested Bohrin the atomic structure, which led to Borh's great discovery, which in returnled to Bohr's atomic models.

The Problem:

WhenBohr borrowed the Quantum Theory from Professor Rutherford, he had difficultyof explaining the stability of atoms. So Niels Bohr asked himself what makesthe atom stable and once he reached a conclusion that electrons that orbit thenucleus of an atom balance the whole atom, he had to ask himself how electronsand the nucleus balance the atom. Another problem that Bohr faced was that hishypothesis in his papers seemed to have difficulty in understanding. Societywas facing the Great depression in the 1920s and 1930s.

Research and Solutions: How did your scientist answer these questions? Describetheir research or experiments. What challenges or failures did your scientistencounter?

TheQuantum Theory showed structures of the atom but did not show how the atomremained stable and so Bohr had started to research how the atom can remainstable by applying concepts and working them out. Once he found the a conceptthat fitted best he wrote about it in his papers. Bohr proposed that the atomwas stable because electrons, which have a negative charge attract to theprotons in the nucleus, which have a positive charge. A Conclusion he came towas that an atom that absorbed energy would make the electron move away fromthe nucleus but if the atom gave off energy, it made the electrons move closer. When Bohr wrote out papers on the atom's structure and stability, Rutherfordsaid that his hypothesis was "difficult" so Bohr went to Manchesterto discuss the papers with him until they came to an agreement.

Shoulders Of Giants: What previous work did your scientist build upon? How did your scientist’s work affect future scientists? How did otherscientists build upon his/her work?

WhenBohr was younger he did an experiment in his father's lab that was aboutdetermining surface tension by using some of the few factors known, such as thelength of waves that formed from a jet. Bohr used this factor and wrote a paperthat won him an award and was published in a magazine. When unlocking moreabout the structure of the atom, Bohr used Rutherford's Quantum Theory. NielsBorh's work affected the future of all physicist by establishing a more fulleratomic structure in their minds so that they can relate to it and work off ittoo. John Weeler worked off of Bohr's Liquid Drop Model of the atom in order tocollaborate his work. Bohr also helped establish CERN, which is the EuropeanNuclear Research association.

Impact on Society: How did your scientist’swork change the thinking of the time? What impact does your scientist’s workhave on our lives today?

7. Bohr'swork made people think more of the atomic structure and how it works. Bohr madeothers think about the use of the nuclear bomb during the Manhattian Project, which was the building of the nuclear bomb. He warned others about the dangerthat the bomb can cause and the destruction, which made other scientist thinkabout how and when to use the bomb. When people began to understand Bohr'smodel of the atom and his theory, people and scientist began using it to buildup their work on Bohr's theories. Scientist became more aware of how electronswork around the atom along with how the atom is stable. Bohr's work has madethe atom more understandable with lesser complexity of atomic structure.

Recognitions: Has anythingbeen named in honor of your scientist? Are there other interesting facts aboutyour scientist? Notable quotations?

Asteroid3948 Bohr was named after Niels Bohr. Bohrium is an element that was added tothe periodic table in honor of Niels Bohr and it's atomic number is 107. Interestingthings that I found out about my scientist is that he worked with the famousscientist Albert Einstein on the nuclear bomb and they discussed the Quantumtheory. Bohr also had six children and they were all boys but sadly two died ata young age. His great award was the Nobel Prize in which he received in 1922for his theory of the atomic structure. Niels Bohr once said, "An expertis a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrowfield." He also said "There are some things so serious you have tolaugh at them."

Citation: Carefullycite at least 3 sources using the APA style.
