English Benchmark By: Zayd Alsardary

My english benchmark was based on the book that we read the Freedom Writers Diaries. The Freedom Writers Diaries is a book that is based on the true stories that real students wrote about their lives and the problems and hardships that they were facing inside a diary and each student chose a small series of diaries that meant the most to them and they put all the diaries together to form the whole book. The book is mainly based on real students that went to a school who were extremely bad and acted in the worst ways and they were poor in their grades until a substitute teacher named Ms. Gruwell changed their lives. Ms Gruwell tried to give her best to the students and she bought them knew books, taught them how to read and write, and helped the students relate to the people inside the books and the stories they talked about. Ms Gruwell let the students have fun inside class and gave them the chance to talk about their personal lives and problems that they dealed with throughout their childhoods to their high school year and their graduating year. Ms. Gruwell let them express their feelings toward each other and to become friends with other ethicities and cultures and races. The book talks about the lives of the students until graduating year and you can actually see the change throughout the diaries from bad to good. The instructions of the benchmark was to choose a diary from the book and to state why students, elders, and everyone in the community should be able to read the diary you chose. The diary I chose was diary # 5 is about a boy who used to get picked on and bullied from other students, so he asked his mom for "supply money" and bought a gun. Then one day he was getting off the bus and 3 gangsters came up to him and started punching him and pushing him around. Suddenly the boy took out the gun and the gangsters ran. Then one day he saw a man on the other side of the street and their eyes locked and they took out their guns and started shooting at each other. Then the other man ran out of bullets so the man ran. The boy talks about how it was like a 007 movie, but in this movie, the blood was real. I wrote that you should be allowed to read the dairy because you will understand the thoughts and emotions of the boy, you could relate to the story, you could help other people relate to the story, and it will help you take off your problems off your mind because you can know that there is a person who is suffering the same way you are. If I had the chance to change this benchmark I would make paragraphs and I would find out more ways of why students and everyone should be allowed to read the Freedom Writers Diaries.

BioChem Benchmark

This year in biochemistry we studied many topics and discussed a range of scientific matters. During the end of the quarter we were assigned a benchmark. In this assessment, we were randomly assigned groups by our choice in a scientist. For the project, we had to create a scientist profile, a slide show, and conduct research about the scientist's life.
I worked in a group of two, and I picked Alfred Wegner to study. My partner and I work diligently and well together to create and collaborate a spectacular project. At the end of our benchmark, we tallied up votes from fellow classmates about the best presentation. At first we were winning, and then three groups tied. It was a close race, but unfortunately we did not win.
There is nothing that I would have done differently in this certain project, because I worked extremely hard and I believe that it was great. Also, my teammate and I worked extremely well together and we had no problems dividing the work and helping one another.

Spanish 1 Benchmark for Quarter 1

In my Spanish 1 class I learned the basics of Spanish I learned how to greet someone, how to ask someone their name, how to order food, etc. We were given a scenario for our Benchmark. The scenario was that we were imagining we were creating a brochure for people who speak Spanish in order for them to be able to translate their Spanish words into English.

I made my brochure colorful to make sure that it was eye-catching so it can draw the reader to my brochure in particular out of many brochures. I took everything that I learned and used key things that a fluent Spanish speaker would need to know in order to get by in an English speaking country such as America. I also mad sure my brochure was filled with valuable information.

If I did this project again I might add more topics into my brochure.

First Quarter English Benchmark

In English class I was learning about how to form the structure of a Thesis paper and how to write creatively. Our benchmark had two parts. They were Thesis and Creative pieces. While learning these skills we were reading a book entitled “The Odyssey” and watching a movie with a similar plot called “Troy”. For the first part we were instructed to write a thesis paper and use evidence from the story to support your thesis statement. For the second part we had to create a hero and a story. The requirements were to make up a conflict for your hero to go through and to include an epic simile and/ or metaphor in order to describe something in your story.

For my benchmark I chose to write about integrity for my thesis paper. I felt like integrity was all throughout the book and my point of view could be argued. My thesis statement was “There are many cases in life were people who play high roles in other people’s life don’t deserve to have that position of power. Odysseus tries his hardest in order to show on the outside that he is strong, but he is really weak. He doesn’t deserve to be a king. He tries to hold the strength reputation of a king. Weakness is not honorable. Therefore, Odysseus is not honorable.” For my second part of my Benchmark, the creative piece, I wrote about a girl who is a wizard and she isn’t allowed to use her powers because her father doesn’t trust her judgment.

Although I am satisfied with my benchmarks I would have does a couple things differently. With my creative piece I would have made my epic similes more descriptive.

The Science Benchmark: by Zayd Alsardary

This is my science benchmark for Mr Sherif's class. This was a group project and I was working with a partner (Alissa DiBartelimeo). This project was mainly based on picking a famous scientist of your choice and to make a application all about the scientist and persuade the audience in a presentation of the scientist why the scientist deserves recognition and why the scientist should win the " SLAward". My project was on Leonardo Da Vinci. I had to do alot of research to get all the information and we had to also create a scientist profile so that we could hang it up in the wall outside Mr Sherif's wall for display. The scientist profile had to be really short and brief so that when the reader of the profile reads it they learn a large amount about the scientist just by giving a small summary or a couple facts about the scientist. I studied alot about Da Vinci such as that Da Vinci was a scientist, a mathematician, an engineer, an architect, a botanist, a musician, and a writer. Da Vinci is one of the most famous painters and is recognized for some of his great artistic works such as the Mona Lisa, and he actually caused many mysteries such as what Mona Lisa is smiling at in the painting. He even made many inventions such as a model of the modern day vacuum cleaner and the modern day hand glider. When you come to think of it and you actually research about Da Vinci, you will know that he gave alot of information to scientists in the day now because it helps scientists find out things about the past and things that might actually happen in the future. If I had the chance to change anything in the benchmark I did is I would rehearse the presentation a little better and I would make the information that I have a little briefer and easier for the reader to read without getting bored reading a long sentence. I would also make a powerpoint or keynote presentation than a word document because it would be easier for the audience to read what I wrote and it would be easier for me too. That is how I would change the benchmark if I had the chance to redo it again.

Q1 Benchmarks SLA

Algebra Benchmark

In algebra we were experimenting and solving problems aboutArea for circles, Guess and Check tables and formulas. We had to solve a numberof questions and upload them to the school recommended websites. We had to work with the people at mytable to solve all the problems.

I tried to solve the problems with the most logic and what Ihad learned, there for we would get the right answer. I also used the formulasI knew and the help form my classmates to figure out some of the questions. Iworked with a lot of different people, to spread out all of the work and toshare the ideas of the answer and why.

If I could change anything that I did I would try tounderstand everything that I needed from my teacher to do better. Triplechecked everything and asked for more opinions in my class. Maybe just askedfor help or to do the entire thing over and start fresh so that I would not bedistracted by my old mistakes.

Here is some of the work:

Other work from applications such as Sketchpad should be uploaded soon so come and check it out for more examples.

Q1 Benchmarks SLA

Spanish Benchmark

We were studying tenses of words and conjugations of them,so for the benchmark we had to write a story in Spanish that was about oursummer. However since I did not actually do anything this past summer I made astory about a girl named Rosadita and she fly’s to some different places andtakes picture. She toured Canada and New York City from California. After I typed up the story, It had tohave what they did and what happened, when did they we had to make it into apower point presentation sort of like a movie. Some people made it on Imovie (aapplication that are on our laptops).

I made a power point presentation and a two-page paper on mystory about Rosadita’s vacation. I had also recorded my voice reading over mystory to the slideshow. It made it more like a movie and more interesting thenreading a paragraph off of the slide.

If I could redo anything or the whole benchmark I would makemy presentation a movie like one of my class mates, or make it more interestingand I would have spoken slower.

Here is a copy of mystory:

Ashley Etheredge

10/13/08

Q1 Etheredge Benchmarks Biochem

Biochem Benchmark

My teacher Mr. Sheriff assigned a scientist from ourrequested list and work with a partner, me and my partner Mathew Schuderi gotthe scientist Niels Bohr, a physical scientist that helped build the atomicbomb during WW II and the Nazi invasion. He also discovered the Nucleus of theatom. After we were assigned NielsBohr then we had to research him, write a paper on all of his discoveries.Later we had to make a profile and make an argumentative presentation on whyour scientist should win the “ SLAWARD”. The SLAward is a fake certificate thatwe would receive for the best argument and information in our presentaion, which had to be finished less than two minutes.

Me and my partner Mathew made collaborated a lot of ideas wealso both chipped in when making the profile and a one-page bibliography abouthis life and all of his discoveries. We made a power point, that wasinformative but not boring, we tried to make it look rather hand written andold by having “ink splotches on the side of the frame. Then we hung a profile of Bohr on the wall in the hall; whichhad his life spands dates, his biggest accomplishments and a large picture ofhim. We also had to write/ fillout a from with more information on it , and uploaded the form to (Scienceleadership Academy’s online homework and assignment website).

I think that if I could ever redo my benchmark, and what Iwould do to make it better, I would try to put a little more effort in thepresentation and try to loosen up on the whole project. I would most definitelytry not to stress out over the project as much as I did this time around.

Here are copies of mywork:

Intro: Niels Bohrwas a great man, not only was he a great scientist, teacher and husband but hewas also somewhat of a hero. You see whatwe are about to tell, and show you goes a bit beyond the regular info fromsites like Wykapedia and About .com. We will answer the question of who is Niels Bohr …

(Lifespand: 1885-1962)

In his young years he was already interested inphysiology, his dad Christian Bohr and some of his teachers had inspired him.

Later (around1903) he attended the University of Copenhagen, which is where he was awardedfor his experiment on Surface Tension by the Academy of Science in Copenhagenin the order of the Royal society. He also earned his masters and Doctorate in physiology. A little after he earned hisdegrees he began to work with great scientists of the day such as J.J. Thompsonand the great professor Rutherford!

This was allbefore he started studying the atomic structure, with out ProfessorRutherford’s help and assistance on his structure of the atoms nucleus andThompson’s discovery of the electron Niels would not have been able to takethat information and add to it in ways many people could never even wrap theirminds around.

Bohr went toEngland to examine Rutherford’s recently created model of the atoms nucleus, however the model was not perfected, along with his theory.

Bohr’sepiphany lead to his theory of the electron ring; his theory was that if therewas an atom then there had to be electrons that orbit around the atoms nucleusjust like the sun and the planets.

After hemarried Margrethe Norlund and the birth of their six sons, and then the deathof two of them; he went to work as the head of Copenhagen’s Institute ofTheoretical Physics. However, he was stopped in his work by the Nazi invasion,Niels and his family fled to Sweden for shelter and then to the U.S.

During Worldwar II Niels Bohr traveled to Alamos, New mexico to advise the scientists developing the first atomic bomb! Hereturned to Copenhagen after the war and later promoted the peaceful use ofatomic energy.

Again NielsBohr was an amazing man, and as we have just educated you has lived quite a lifeand has made some wonderful discoveries that have helped our age of science inmany ways besides theatrical science but physical science too. We believe thatfor these reasons Niels Bohr should receive the SLAward.

2) MatthewScuderi & Ashley Etheredge RedStream October 7, 2008

The Scientist: Niels Henrik David Bohr

Date of Birth/Death: October 7, 1885 - November 18, 1962

Background Information:

Borninto a Jewish/Danish family in the town of Copenhagen, Denmark to ChristianBohr and Ellen Adler. His father was a physicist at The University OfCopenhagen and he interested Niels Bohr in his work. After he received hisMasters and Doctorate degree in 1909, he began working with ProfessorRutherford on the atomic structure in 1911 and 1912. He married later in 1912.

Education:

Attended Gammelholm Grammar School andthe University of Copenhagen where he received his all of his degrees.

The Era/Time: What was happening in the world at thistime?

Duringthe time of Niels Bohr and his experiments, the progressive era was takingplace. The Progressive Era started when many journalist drew attention to theissues of child labor, corruption, lynching, and bad business practices. Thisall led to four constitutional amendments, the right for women to vote, tariffswere lowered, income tax taking role, banking control, prohibition of alcoholicdrinks, ect. The new laws and rights affected Bohr the same as if affectedeveryone else, which made people more successful by opening up opportunity.World War One & Two had also taken place during Niels Bohr's life. Bohr hadto flee Denmark during World War Two because of the Nazi Invasion. Due to thewars, Bohr became interested in the development of nuclear bombs, which waseventually changed because he realized the destruction such a bomb could cause.Rutherford's Quantum theory that had been published at the time interested Bohrin the atomic structure, which led to Borh's great discovery, which in returnled to Bohr's atomic models.

The Problem:

WhenBohr borrowed the Quantum Theory from Professor Rutherford, he had difficultyof explaining the stability of atoms. So Niels Bohr asked himself what makesthe atom stable and once he reached a conclusion that electrons that orbit thenucleus of an atom balance the whole atom, he had to ask himself how electronsand the nucleus balance the atom. Another problem that Bohr faced was that hishypothesis in his papers seemed to have difficulty in understanding. Societywas facing the Great depression in the 1920s and 1930s.

Research and Solutions: How did your scientist answer these questions? Describetheir research or experiments. What challenges or failures did your scientistencounter?

TheQuantum Theory showed structures of the atom but did not show how the atomremained stable and so Bohr had started to research how the atom can remainstable by applying concepts and working them out. Once he found the a conceptthat fitted best he wrote about it in his papers. Bohr proposed that the atomwas stable because electrons, which have a negative charge attract to theprotons in the nucleus, which have a positive charge. A Conclusion he came towas that an atom that absorbed energy would make the electron move away fromthe nucleus but if the atom gave off energy, it made the electrons move closer. When Bohr wrote out papers on the atom's structure and stability, Rutherfordsaid that his hypothesis was "difficult" so Bohr went to Manchesterto discuss the papers with him until they came to an agreement.

Shoulders Of Giants: What previous work did your scientist build upon? How did your scientist’s work affect future scientists? How did otherscientists build upon his/her work?

WhenBohr was younger he did an experiment in his father's lab that was aboutdetermining surface tension by using some of the few factors known, such as thelength of waves that formed from a jet. Bohr used this factor and wrote a paperthat won him an award and was published in a magazine. When unlocking moreabout the structure of the atom, Bohr used Rutherford's Quantum Theory. NielsBorh's work affected the future of all physicist by establishing a more fulleratomic structure in their minds so that they can relate to it and work off ittoo. John Weeler worked off of Bohr's Liquid Drop Model of the atom in order tocollaborate his work. Bohr also helped establish CERN, which is the EuropeanNuclear Research association.

Impact on Society: How did your scientist’swork change the thinking of the time? What impact does your scientist’s workhave on our lives today?

7. Bohr'swork made people think more of the atomic structure and how it works. Bohr madeothers think about the use of the nuclear bomb during the Manhattian Project, which was the building of the nuclear bomb. He warned others about the dangerthat the bomb can cause and the destruction, which made other scientist thinkabout how and when to use the bomb. When people began to understand Bohr'smodel of the atom and his theory, people and scientist began using it to buildup their work on Bohr's theories. Scientist became more aware of how electronswork around the atom along with how the atom is stable. Bohr's work has madethe atom more understandable with lesser complexity of atomic structure.

Recognitions: Has anythingbeen named in honor of your scientist? Are there other interesting facts aboutyour scientist? Notable quotations?

Asteroid3948 Bohr was named after Niels Bohr. Bohrium is an element that was added tothe periodic table in honor of Niels Bohr and it's atomic number is 107. Interestingthings that I found out about my scientist is that he worked with the famousscientist Albert Einstein on the nuclear bomb and they discussed the Quantumtheory. Bohr also had six children and they were all boys but sadly two died ata young age. His great award was the Nobel Prize in which he received in 1922for his theory of the atomic structure. Niels Bohr once said, "An expertis a person who has made all the mistakes that can be made in a very narrowfield." He also said "There are some things so serious you have tolaugh at them."

Citation: Carefullycite at least 3 sources using the APA style.

History Benchmark

My teacher Mr. Sheriff gave my class the assignment of aEgypt project where we reenact the King of Egypt Tut’s grand dinner. We wouldhave to play the part as the kings most important people such as the HighPriest, the General of his army, the farmer, the Noble man and of course theking. We had to make a script stating what our life was like what the kingcould do to help us, what we ate. We were allowed to make it funny, serious or relaxed.

My group made it as flowy as possible and have all of ourfacts in it , without coming off boring, I was the General of the kings army, Istated what I did all day what I did for the king and answered the “kings”question on how he could help my soldiers and myself.

My partners were Julia Boyer as the Noble Man, Aaron Johnsonas the Farmer, Ryan Francis as the High Priest and Joshua Martin –Corales asKing Tut.

I helped my group by creating the menu with my friend JuliaBoyer, I looked up foods that they ate back then and made the menu look asauthentic as I could.

If I could redo my benchmark over again would make our skitfunnier and flowier so that everyone received a good vibe, the positive andnegative informative information from our performance. Q1 BM, AEtheredge, Mr.Sheriff, SLA, History

English Benchmark

During the first quarter in English, as a class we read a heroic and inspiring story, The Freedom Writers Diary. As a class we really made deep connections to this fantastic book. At the end of the first quarter we were assigned a benchmark. All throughout the United States many were working on banning The Freedom Writers Diary. However, we as a class thought this was wrong. Our benchmark was to pick a specific diary entry and explain why it should not be banned.
In my particular benchmark, I chose a diary entry that I was able to find myself in that certain situation. For this particular project I picked a specific entry that displayed how diversity plays a role in many people's lives today, whether by: race, ethnicity, religion, or sex.
I highly enjoyed this certain benchmark. On the other hand, I would have looked more in depth into my writing to make my essay more intriguing. Also, I would have taken a better notice of my deadlines for the benchmark. Other than the few small grammar errors and tiny issues, I am proud of my work this certain project.

Q1 Benchmarks SLA

English Benchmark

My teachers Mr. Chase and Ms. Weinraub assigned an essay forthe benchmark of the 1st quarter. The Benchmark was to write anessay based off of a diary entry stating our feelings on banning the book AFreedom Writers Diary from schools, after previously reading the book. My essay was particularly about diary88, and how we as a people as a whole should change 4 the better. How childrensee each other with innocent eyes and openness. We had to incorporate some of the diary authors quotes; Istarted with a quote to show my feelings, their feelings and our voicestogether.

The diary entry 88 is a poem about how we should all betreated, stated, represented and most of all PROUD of who we are as a person. Not as what people would label other people of different races.

If I could ever do it over again I would try to be moregrammatically correct and spell my words better. Double-check everything I didbe fore submitting it. But I would not change my writing in that actual essay, because no matter how much better I get with my spelling or grammar it willstill be my words, thoughts feelings, me on that paper. Q1 BM, AEtheredge, Mr.Chase and Ms Weinraub, SLA, English

Here is a copy of mybenchmark:

AshleyEtheredge

Red-9 English Benchmark

10/28/08

Argumentativeessay on: why should students be allowed to read diary 88

A Few days ago my English teachers toldme that the book Freedom writers was a band book, from schools for a very longtime. However we are reading the bookA Freedom Writers Diary. It turns out that the argument was that it would sendthe wrong message to the kids that read it?

The People against the book thought thatjust because the characters have a hard life and try to get away or make thebest of it in anyway they could. Just like a normal kid, except that they get away by drinking, gettinghigh and joining gangs. But theseare not just characters in an author’s book that have a message; these peopleare real. And their stories need to be told, people should know about it. This persons story is just one of the manystories that need to be told. “How canshe trust me if I can’t even trust myself?” “She shouldn’t trust anyone whosteals money from their family, begs her friend for change and digs through hercouch just to support her drug habit.” “In some sick way I wish that I couldget caught so that all of this lying could be behind me”.

–Freedom Writer

I believe that the book Freedom Writersexposes adults and children to the more unfortunate lives of these kids in highschool in Long Beach California. This book uncovers the non-sugar coated partof life, and how a little change, perseverance and a strong Locus of controlfrom a teacher can change everything. Maybe at first it was just the school butnext it was the world that began to change; and to me that is most definitely alesson that sheltered kids and adults should learn about so that they can growand be better people from it.

Myexample is diary 88 and it shows one teenagers perspective and feelings oncertain problems and wars in his/her life. The poem is called STAND and itsays:

Stay Black- Stay Proud

Stay White –Stay Proud

Stay Brown- Stay Proud

Stay Yellow-

Stay Proud…

Don’t be afraid to be what you are,

‘Cause all you can be, is you!

You’ll never be anything else but you, sobe the best you, you can be.

Keep it real –

Byall means, at all times.

Whether a Lawyer, a Doctor, a Footballplayer, a Toilet cleaner, a Garbage handler, a Pan handler-

Keep it real-

And still- Be the best you can be.

Have pride, have dignity, stand!

Stand proud, talk proud, act proud, beproud!

Don’t lay down,

Back down,

Bow down,

run away,

sell out your self out,

sell into criticism.

Be real and realize that the ones, whocriticize, best recognize that you are you.

Take it or leave it.

“MMM HMMM!”

I knew you’d get it.

Get what?

The stuff-

The stuff called pride, that attitude, that aura,

your identity, your self, your peace ofmind, worry free!

See, I can’t be youbut I can be a damn good ME!

-Freedom Writer from diary 88

Allstudents of a certain age (middle school) should be allowed to read diary 88from the Freedom Writers, at least in their curriculum or on the shelves oftheir library. This diary is mostly a poem and it voices all of the suppressedfeelings and thoughts of passed students. Their history, and problems in lifeand the (states) city’s community at the time; the poem has an inspirationalmessage and the true problems that people have decided to walk away frombecause they’re afraid to face it. Such as: Race, pride and dignity, don’t letyour self get beat down by anyone especially by people (getting jumped); it haspassion and personality and self-forgiveness and self-reliance. This person’s poem has a lot to saythat should be read or heard. Out of everybody; people that are in high schoolshould read this book. It will tell and teach them how to deal with what everis happening in their school. How to deal with bullying, their “status” inschool and other “big problems” whatever they might be, whether they’re asserious as Wilson high’s or as unserious as having the wrong shoes. The authorof the poem says: “ Don’t be afraid to be who you are, ‘cause all you can beis, you! You’ll never be anything else but you, so be the best you, you can be“. – FreedomWriter

Andanyone in any day and age should know this quote and get at least somethingfrom it, to me this quote should be a standard known quote.

Doyou really want to be the person that will keep students from readingthis?

Learninglife’s problems early so that they can be ready for it if it ever happens tothem?

Spanish Benchmark

Spanish

We had to make a speaking guide for Senorita Manuel’s class. It all had to be written in Spanish, and explaining at least five different things that we had learned during the time we were in her class. This ranged anywhere between introducing yourself, to telling the whether. Senorita Manuel tol us to get creative, which inspired me to make “The Travel Guide: Spanish Edition.”

My guide had six to seven pages, including the cover page. I explained Spanish numbers, one to one-hundred. I also instructed how to introduce yourself by saying your name and age. I continued on from there to instruct on how to flirt in Spanish, and how they can combine the flirting and introducing themselves. Example “Hola guapo/a.. Como te llama?” Which means, “Hello good looking, what’s your name.” The last two pages of the article explain how to talk about the weather, and describe how you are feeling.

I wouldn’t change much in this benchmark. I put a lot of time and effort in completing this benchmark. I would print the guide out in color. I did not have a printer at my household. I would have also chose a different color for the magazine, maybe blue or red.

English Benchmark

Nia Berry November18, 2008

English Benchmark

My English teacher Mr. Chaseassigned this benchmark after completing reading the book Freedom Writer’sDiary. The assignment was to pick a chapter from the book Freedom Writer’sDiary and write a 5-paragraph essay on why the diary entry should be taught inclass. Each paragraph had to have 4 to 5 sentences and at least 1 quote forin-text reference.

Forthis benchmark I did diary entry number 21. This entry was about the freedomwriter’s dinning experience with holocaust survivors. I started by writing outthe pro’s and con’s of teaching the entry in class. Next I wrote out the mainsubjects in the entry that should be taught in class and found quotes in thetext that related to each subject Finally I typed up my essay, peer-edited itand sent it in.

If we were to do this assignment again I would add more detail in my quotes andreasons for the entry to be taught in class. I also would check my spellingerrors better. After seeing the comments left by my English teachers, I think Icould go into deep reasoning’s and thoughts on my essay.

History Benchmark

History

We were told to get into groups of four. We had to work with people we normally wouldn’t work with. People of a different race and cultural background. I worked with Emma, Marinah, and Steve. We were told to plan out a 3-day festival for the Pharaoh of Egypt. He would be visiting the town of per-wadjet, and we ad to make the best festival out of the other groups. We had to make a Friday dinner, Grand dinner (Saturday), and a parade, logo, and poster. We then had to make a dialogue of a guy (for our group a nobleman) meeting the Pharaoh. We also had to make a slideshow presentation

I was in charge of creating the Grand Dinner, and the Friday dinner. This included making the menus and the dinner schedule. Originally I was supposed to do the seating chart, but due to technical difficulties, I wasn’t able to. Emma and I were also supposed to create the slideshow. After that was completed, I made my dialogue talking to King Tut. My main character was shocked that King Tut was so young. They have a conversation, King Tut interviews the other character.

If I was to do this project again, I would focus more on this benchmark, and less on others, I didn’t put my all into this benchmark and I could have done better than that. I could have put more concentration into that project, instead of rushing and waiting to the last minute to do half of it.

Scince Benchmark

Science Benchmark

In Biochemistry, my teacher, Mr. Best, read a story, to us and it had things about famous scientist, and their adventures, when he finished the section, he told us to create a auto-biography of a scientist from either the 17th, 18th, 19th, or 20th century. We also had to choose a partner to work with. I chose Vandavy Som as a partner.

The scientist we chose was Albert Einstein. He was one of the best if not the best scientist of the 20th century. Since it was a partner activity, we decided to divide up the work between us. She would do one part of the scientist I would do the other. I completed the biography and slide show presentation. My partner did the Fact sheet, and the SLAward sheet. The SLAward sheet was a sheet we had to fill out explaining why our scientist should get the SLAward.

If I were to do this differently, I would choose a different partner. She did a great job and everything else, but she was sick a lot during the time this project was due and it held us up. I forgot some of the slideshow, which could have helped us, bring our grade up.

English Benchmark

English Benchmark

For English, we had to write a thesis document about the Odyssey. We read 10 books (chapters) of the Odyssey already. So our teacher, Mr. Kay, told us to make a thesis out of what we know so far. We had to make a thesis statement, three supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. We also had to make our own creative writing, with three epic similes, words from the Odyssey, and had to be five hundred, to five-hundred and fifty words, it also needed to describe glory and written in first person.

My thesis was that Athena, a goddesses, was in love with Telemachus, and is trying to make Telemachus more like a man like his father, who she love more. My creative writing, I titled Universal War, which was set in the future, during World War 3. During one of the greatest battles in the war, alien invaders came down and attacked, and took prisoner the father of the main character, Rachael. She saves him, and to do that she had to become captured herself. She is in a spaceship, reflecting back on the war, and why she is in prison.

I wouldn't do anything differently. I believed everything turned out great. This project was the only one I had at the time, so I could focus all my attention and effort into that one project.

Spanish Benchmark

Spanish Benchmark
In Don Marcos class our benchmark consisted of making a brochure in Spanish no English, you had to make a brochure for a person who does not know Spanish you could only write the words in Spanish so you had to represent the words with pictures. The process of how I made the brochure at first was difficult because I did not understand how to do the project I did it in Microsoft word I went into brochures and used a guideline I put my own personal touch into the brochure I deleted all the work that was in there and put words and pictures in the place of the guideline. The work that I put in the brochure looked like it was here the whole time. In the future I think that I would ask more questions in order to understand the project more clearly I also would start the project earlier so that the day of I’m not looking for a printer to print from Because I could not find a printer in time to print my project to give it to him I had to show him my project on my desktop I let him know and I think he was appreciative that I took the time out to show him my project even though it could print.

Biocheim Benchmark

Actually for my biochemist project I was to do a presentation to persuade to vote my scientist for the Slawards. An award that happens only every year that goes for a grade and creativity here at SLA. To win there must be a keynote presentation and informational description on my scientist. Making the slides really crappy that it makes other student to vote for our scientist.
Well first the scientist that my partner Alex and I did on was John Pemberton. Well John Pemberton was the creator of coca-cola in which we wrote about when he was born to when he died. Making slides that were crappy to impress the other students, which it did. Also my part of the project was to write fact all about Mr. John Pemberton which I did. Having us in the end to present, which they enjoy very much.
Clearly the ending result of this project was not what my partner and me had expected. Well to see there would be many things that I would have changed before I ever uploaded this fact sheet. Actually what I would have done was get the rubric for it which I was not aware of on how the fact feet was to be like. A picture and three bulletins was not what I did. To that also my partner had uploaded his part late cutting of 1/3 of the project in the attendant of this project.

English Benchmark 2008

Truly there were many benchmark projects that had to be done during that time. Well the projects were mainly Biochemist, English, Math, Spanish, and History. Actually one of the benchmark that was really interesting to me and was due on the 31st of October was the English benchmark.
First of all, the English benchmark project was mainly to write a thesis statement basing on what happened in the story Homer the Odyssey. Mainly things like honor, glory, or distraction, which mines were about. Which I had talked about how things that was distracting, distracted them from going home. How women, money, and revenge are things that are distractions to the men’s of the Odysseus.
Which actually I think this thesis statement was actually good compared to my creative writing essay. Mainly I didn’t do well on it by I had done it but I thought it was due by Monday so I fell a sleep while doing it. Waking up in a rush at 1 a.m. on Tuesday completing it forgetting to check again before I upload having me think unclearly.

Spanish Benchmark 2008

Mainly there was actually many things to do in this benchmark. But in the end it was pretty easy project and a good grade indeed. Well for Spanish I was suppose to make a guide on how to survive in a Spanish speaking country like Mexico. Having to include good punitions and grammar. Make it look good mainly crappy, perfect that it showed pictures and good details on what’s to do.
So what I did was a survival guide to Mexico. I had in the front welcome to Mexico explaining why they should get this guide out of all others and why. Then the introduction explaining everything to what they will do in the end and the basic. Which it was really the part that my Spanish teacher really loves of all others. Also beside from the basic I taught by showing diagrams of people specking in espanal to ordering food and flirting with a girl or man.
Well there’s not much I could change to make it perfect but I got to say it was grammar. Well I guess grammar was a little hard but I did still get a 95 overall in this project. Maybe I guess more details on it from what I was taught in Spanish. Even more details to make this guide a really good actually being one more then just two pages.

Spanish 1 - Manuel - E

History Benchmark

The history benchmark was mainly to present about planning a two days festival where the king of Egypt Tut was invited. To celebrate in the harvest of the grapes and grand dinner that’s in the festival. What they would do during and the whole celebration planned out of what are going to be done, how and the money that’s is going to be used.
Actually I did many things for this project benchmark. Mainly planning my vision of what’s going to happen like at like during the parade, dinner, and grape harvest. Explaining what happens even at each hour like picking of the grape and celebrating it by drinking the wine in the mummification chamber. Seeing what goes on in the parade and getting details of what happens and the cost of it from my partners. Having to work together to get the foods right while another writes what will happen during that time.
Truly in this one there would be many things that I would like to change. Beside from my partners I would have change who we would worship from Amen the god of the sun to Min. Mainly because Atun hated Amen and it would actually cause conflict during that time of the festival. Also have planned out what we would say during the presentation because I had lost what I was going to say due to what my partner said instead.

History 9 - Green	Baird

Algebra Benchmark 2008

Math this is my favorite subject but the math benchmark wasn’t really it. Well this class it was behind. So instead Mr. Rochester counted a different project as the benchmark project. This project well of course is an algebraic project that involves circles and quadrilateral. Shapes like rhombus, rectangles, and squares. Forming new shapes and explaining how and got the answer for even triangles.
First of all, what I did was mainly answer each question of course. Finding the area, circumference, and making new shapes that would equal to what is wanted by only using sketchpad. Which it was actually really difficult from just using pencil and paper. Using only shapes and finding out our own formulas without looking them up. Just figuring them out really being difficult but easy in the process.
Truly what I would do different is mainly things but this project was also easy. SO there’s not many things to change because it’s algebra besides the answer but nothing else. Only if it is wrong those are the things to change and how to achieve that answer in the process. Explaining it step by step on how this answer was solve showing that you understand it in the process.

Tech 9 - Hull - A2

First quarter english Benchmark

For our English benchmarks we had to write an essay that analyzed a specific aspect of the book we had been reading; The Odyssey. Some of the major aspects that we analyzed were glory, gender roles and hospitality. The bare necessities for this were five paragraphs; an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph. In all our body paragraphs we needed at least one important quotefrom the book proving our point.

For my English benchmark I wrote my analytical paper on the portrayal of glory inThe Odyssey. My thesis was that glory was not as important to people as the spoils of war. I had some trouble finding quotes that expressed my thesisbecause The Odyssey tries to extenuate how important glory is to everyone. However when I really searched I found some quotes that could riddle an entire speech with contradiction.

If I did this project again I would probably try to find quotes as I read rather than having to return to chapters specifically for quotes which were often difficult to find. I would also try to help people by contributing quotes that I found which did not help me, and hopefully they would do the same in return.I also would have asked more questions in class to clarify certain parts of thestory so that I wouldn’t have to infer what was implied.

English Benchmark

The object of writing the English benchmark was to prove a thesis. At the time, our class was reading the book the Odyssey. My thesis was that the men who fought in the book were always fighting for over something that was unnecessary.
We were told to prove our thesis by giving examples from the book, then analyzing them to show how it proved our thesis. This was a fun assignment because we were given a chance to give our opinions and thoughts on how the people in the book behaved.
The hardest part in the benchmark was trying to conclude the paper. But after being given tips on how to write a good conclusion, it turned out to not be hard at all.

my english benchmark

The english benchmark that we had to do was make a magazine all about yourself by describing a hobby, religious, or relationship opinion of yours. We had to explain to Mr. Kay about how we saw ourself and characteristics of us. We had to make it seem as though it was the real deal.

My magazine talked about my hobbies and how my life revolved around sports. I talked about the different sports that I liked, like football, basketball etc. I explained what made me interested in these sports and what these sports help me do like have fun and be myself.

What i would do differently would be to clearly state all of my opinions dealing with my topic. Instead of just writing it down I could have wrote them out differently.

Benchmark

History

For the history Benchmarkmyself and three other made a group of four, and us four had to make apresentation for the Pharaoh Tutankhamun (aka king Tut). With that thepresentation we will be trying to convince some people including the pharaoh. Withthat making schedule money plan eating plans and many other thing to bring thefevatil of the summer sevil and to have the pharaoh to our fevatail.

In thebenchmark I completed the schedule, and ceremony to the gods plans. To do thisI had to research the gods and goddess that the eguptions worshiped and the onethat Tut liked also ones that would help the event go with out any trouble. Forthe schedule thinking of thing for Tut to do making sure he goes where he mustfor that time well also making sure he has time to himself and free time toenjoy the city. In conclusion doing both the ceremony’s to the gods and theshudle was not very hard but had some harder parts then others.

If I could dosomething different in the benchmark I would look into the gods more a fewpassed by me and would have been great for the presentation. By doing so Iwould show Tut and friends a good time while also paying respect to the gods. That is all I would change really everything else want fine. In conclusion thatis all in my eyes that needs to be changed.
