Art is a way to express your self, a way to get people to notice, whether is is performing, written, or created art. In out advanced art class we have learned to take something from deep within ourselves and turn it into art. For our project I chose to combine different medias in art. I recycled paper and made it into new paper, painted abstract lines onto it, and then glued several plastic tops onto it in random yet creative orders. I chose this to show that art isn't defined, it has no mold, and can be whatever you can imagine.

With the aluminum sculpture I'm making, I hope to have an influence in our universe's environment. My goal for this sculpture is for it to have some kind of influence that can maybe prevent people from wanting to throw trash into space. I enjoy astronomy and love the feeling of the untouched world out there. This is the reason why I was motivated to make such art like this.

The reason why this certain sculpture could have a tiny influence, is it's design. I chose a comet because it's one of the few things that could represent space. Choosing the material isn't hard. The Aluminum represents the current trash that is in space now, unused satellites, launched by different companies. It's shiny metallic texture gives it that industrial feel to it. The "tail" of the comet is have a unique design. They look like feathers, because in most comets I've see, the tail looks similar to a feather. I tried to avoid using a streak-like design for the tail. The comet looks like its coming down and can look like it's picking up trash as it passes Earth. But it really depends on the perspective of the person looking at the sculpture.

The reason I am making this sculpture is because I don't only care about the Earth's environment, but I care for the universe's environment too. I was influenced into doing this by my ILP (Individual Learning Plan) at the Franklin Institute's Observatory. While doing this ILP, I'm learning things about the Sun, but I also remind myself of other wonderful things out there in the universe. I'm also reminded of how beautiful and pure the rest of the universe compared to our planet.

I created a sculpture that was inspired by using sustainable materials. I took an idea that was close to me and put the idea in effect using things that were recycled. By using materials that were already created put this type of art into perspective.

For me, I make decisions about my work by planning. I am a natural planner, often over-thinking, so most of my ideas were hashed out before I started creating the sculpture. I selected materials that were relevant to the project. Recycled bottle caps, cardboard and paper were the focal point. In another way, I chose things that are not normally used in art outside of arts-and-crafts projects. Though I knew what I was building, the type of materials were selected and used as I began making it.

The idea was started when I wanted to share something about my life. I chose something relatively new to my life. I found out I had a thyroid disorder at the beginning of ninth grade. It's something of a side story in my life. It's not a focal point and that's why I chose to focus on it. My work was about my personal experience with thyroid disease as well as general information about it and how it can affect a person.

With the idea of portraying an art project made out of bottle caps and showing what we as humans do with our trash was hard to come up with as an idea. First I started to draw in my sketchbook trying to figure out how I can make a three divisional art piece show all the factors that I want. I was then able to start the project by using only recycled materials.

The way I start is different from most people. I like to have an idea then sketch it out once. Then start making different pieces of it and whatever piece turns out the best I work with and build the art piece from it. As I started to work I chose only the recyclable materials. Any thing I had access to that I felt would be of some use I incorporated it in to my project. Along with the things I remembered I made a bottle cap poster. To help collect them so they cold are used in the project, so I found a way to include them.

My idea came to when me when I first received this project. I automatically thought about the ocean we destroy by all the trash that it encounters over an extensive period of time. Whenever I go places I love to look at the water it’s one of my favorite things to do. I find it to be very pretty and extremely relaxing. So I decided to show people what we’re doing to the water slowly but surely.

well i was going to do many different project when it came to thinking of this recycling theme. but i could never think of the exact right one for me to do. so in the beginning i was kind trying out different thing at home. i would start to paint but throw it away. i could figure out what i wanted to do for the longest time in this theme of using recycled things and expressing why we need to recycle so bad. so what i had my grandmother do was get a recycled canvas.

i had the canvas at my house for a while because i didn't know what or how i was going to do this art project as i said in the beginning. but i finally brought it to school. i painted the canvas white all over again to make it cover the background. at first i was going to us the background that was already on the canvas but then i wanted to us all different colors so i just painted it white all over again. i wasn't exactly sure what i was going to do to this canvas after i painted it white, so i just got some paint and i just started painting the canvas with every color i could find. in doing this i came up with an abstract painting that i called The Nothing.

okay so i came back one time when i was mad to paint because i paint when i am upset and i forgot to take a picture of what it looked like before. so i painted over it and took a picture of what i did then. then i took another picture of what i did the next time of course. im still working on this one painting because i feel as though it isn't done yet. i just feel like there is always something else i can add to it.

This is my bottle cap poster that I took a picture of today. It has been hanging up in the halls of SLA for a few weeks now. Someone decided to add $5,000 at the left hand corner, I did not put that there. I hope that the students of SLA saw my poster and then remembered to bring in bottle caps to school because that is the purpose of this poster. Bottle caps were being collected from everyone in school so we could recycle them. I wanted my poster to be unique and clever so I figured that the plastic bottle caps were really wanted in the art room that I would make sort of like a warrent for Mr. Bottle Cap. I knew people would understand why we needed the bottle caps if wrote that the bottle caps were needed for art use.

I do this work because I feel like the world is becoming more and more trashy. I believe we can work together to make the world a clearer place for the animals and ourselves. Every day I see people Littering and not knowing they are killing the animals and affecting the air we are breathing. There are trash in the north pacific gyre that about the size of the state Texas. my question is why so many trash in the middle of the ocean? that show how we as a whole are not civilize. My goals are to get this message through everyone and make sure they understand that they are affecting the world and all living things in it including us. It wouldn’t hurt to put trashes in the trashcan.

My project is on a green bored because I want people to be greener to the world and shows how greener our world can get by not littering. I draw my world map instead of buying the map because I feel like is better to draw it because I’m showing that i cared about the world and to also show how art have a part in this project. I draw the map with a black crayons because I want people to see the outline of all seven continents.

My current work I do them because I had to do them and I do them with out trying to send a message through it but this one I’m trying to get people attention and understand the message behind my art. Art wasn’t always my thing because I thought art had no purpose and you can’t express yourself with art like how you can with words. I was wrong because I’m expressing how I feel about the world and how seeing the world like this affects me.

Artist Statement

This art project was part of the course I am taking in art. Me and my classmates each had to create something out of recycled material, material that could be recycled, or trash. My goal in this project was to create something beautiful out of things that are usually regarded as ugly.

I decided to make jewelry because I am very interested in fashion and design. I think that much of what you wear resembles your personality and/or the mood that you are feeling that day. In my personal style I like to fuse girly and preppy with things that are more edgier and hard. This jewelry represents both aspects of my style. My grandfather was an engineer and still likes to build things around the house. He has a garage full of old bolts and other odds and ends. I aimed to use his old building materials to create something creative and wearable. The only item that I bought was gorilla glue.

The first piece I created used nails and metal circles. I used the glue to connect the nails to the metal part, and used old fishing wire as a chain. The second piece I created used an old fish hook that I connected to my dogs old vaccination tag.

I created a bottle cap poster in order to get peoples attention so that they would bring in bottle caps for my classes project. Each student had to do a poster, and they were hung up around the school.

During the first marking period, the main idea is all about recycling. During quarter 1, we made posters to hang around the school, asking the students to save their bottle caps, and bring them to the art room so that we could use them in our art. Those bottle caps collected also went to Aurora Robinson, and she used them to create her art that is being displayed at an art gallery here in Philadelphia.

Artist Statement:

For quarter 2, the assignment was to create any piece of art, using recycled materials. My decision was to make art using something that I could use and help eliminate from landfills, and make something that people would be able to relate to.

The decisions I make about my work, are usually made by examining how I feel about what I am doing. If I feel good about a sketch, then I feel that I am making progress. I decided that using bottles would be a good material to use, because it's another way for recycling plastic. That was the only recycled material I used. I felt that because that was a pretty large bottle, that it would go and sit in a landfill somewhere just like the other plastics.

After making a list about things that I could do, I decided to go with making butterflies using 2 liter bottles. I felt that butterflies are animals that people like to see when the spring comes around, and something that you might not wonder about how they're affected by pollution. You get to see butterflies of all different shapes, sizes and colors. I think by doing this project, I've realized how so many things can be affected by pollution, and how those things may be some things that you just won't realize how much it meant until it's gone.

For my art project I decided to create two separate pieces. The first piece I created was a cell phone holder. I did this so that I could have a designated place to put my cellphone. The second piece I am still working on is a 3 dimensional cardboard replica of the supergirl icon using recycled candy wrappers. I decided to create such a piece so that I could add something special to my room.

For this specific project I had to make a few decisions. One major decision was what type of recycled material I was going to use and how I was going to use it. I eventually decided that I was going to use candy wrappers to create something that I could keep for a long time. I decided to make something that I like into a decoration for my room. I choose to recreate the supergirl icon because she is one of my favorite superheros. She is strong physically and I strive to be strong mentally and emotionally. For me cellphone holder I had to choose a paint color and I chose green because that is my favorite color.

This was pretty much the first type of art project that I came up with on my own. I realized while working on this project that i can be creative and that i actually enjoy being able to do that. I also enjoy challenging myself and taking on new things.

Crocheting has been a hobby of mine since I was six years old. My great-great aunt Stella taught me how to do simple stitches. After I mastered the basics, I moved on to patterns and she showed me how to follow them and how to make my stitches tighter. After I got more and more practice, I became better at making my rows even and my stitches neat and tight. My goal was to make beautiful doilies and table clothes like my great-great aunt Stella made using thin, fine thread. I’m not quit there yet but I will someday learn.

I am in the middle of constructing a patch quilt afghan. I had to decide if I wanted to make this afghan a solid color or multicolored. I chose multicolored because I saw that I could make different patterns throughout the afghan by using different stitches that could only be noticed if I used different colored yarn. I am switching up the pattern every time I switch a color. I am either crocheting stitches that go, single, treble, single, or single, double, single. Both patterns I am using follow a A B A B pattern which means after making a row that consists of treble, single, treble or double, single, double, the next row I crochet will only consist of the single crochet stitch. I chose to make these patterns because when I am done the afghan, these different stitches are going to be very noticeable and it will look very neat. Using these stitches will also make the afghan thicker, therefore warmer.

When I crochet, I feel like I am spending my time wisely because I am getting a task accomplished, even if I am sitting on the bus going to school. It is achieving a goal and keeping me occupied anytime I just have time to sit down and relax.

In art class, we’ve been talking about how much plastic we use that isn’t recycled and how much plastic animals and humans eat. This made me think about how much paper fish must eat, seeing as paper is used more if not equally as much as plastic. Just simply walking on the street, I have seen newspapers, candy wrappers and other things on the ground and near the sewers.

I decided to do a seascape. I decided to use a seascape because our oceans are affected severely. I cut patterns from magazines into fish shapes, all different shapes and sizes. I decided to use magazine cut-outs to symbolize the paper that makes its way to the ocean, I cut the cut-outs into fish shapes to show that the fish consume what makes its way into the ocean. I cut them into all shapes and sizes to show that just as we are different so are fish; they have an identity just as we do.

I usually don’t paint because I do not believe I am very good at it, but in this particular project I decided to paint to add a texture and opaque color to the newspaper. In health class, we were cutting images out of magazines to make a collage about ourselves. I decided to use an old Vogue magazine for my fish seeing as there is a lot of unique and creative patterns designers use in their clothing lines. I figured this could show so individuality in the fish I cut out. I also used newspaper print in a few of the fish to show that paper makes its way into the ocean.

Art is creativity on display. Art can show you the mental working of the artist, and their way of expression. Art can be in multiple forms, such as performance, written, or hand designed. That is why art is individual and unique. No peace of art is the same as another.

I chose to start from scratch, literally. I took newspaper and recycled it into canvas. This process consisted of turning twelve newspapers into strips, then using a blender and some water turning the strips into pulp. After the put was made, I used a picture frame and a thin cloth to fish out the paper and strain it. Once the pulp was strained it needed to dry, so it was placed between two towels and I used a rolling pin to squeeze the water out.

After the, newly formed, canvas was dried I glued the thin cloth to the back to keep it sturdy. One the glue dried it was time to paint. I used watercolor paint to create abstract lines and figured on the canvas and glued on various recyclables. Thus was my form off art created.

The reason I do my work is to create things that are visually appealing and useful to others and myself. One of my goals is to build a shelter for both the homeless and animals. Another one of my goals is to go to school for graphic design.

In the course of my work I try to see what the viewer will both admire and find useful. My materials are to use whatever is at hand. My technique is to do something that is not going to be expensive to make.

My current work is a tissue box made out of a milk container and a sprite bottle. The reason I have created this is because I have lived my life with allergies and I know others who have allergies too so i decided to make something that everyone will appreciate. In this project I challenged myself to make something simple and useful.

For this quarter we focused on making art out of recycled material. I particularly liked this unit because the fact that were using things that could potentially harm the earth. I feel like its good way to get people to start recycling by doing more then just tossing the recycled materials into the recycling bin.

For my project I wanted to make an entire picture out of using only recycled materials. I feel like that is the most effective way to show other options of saving our environment. I used materials such as newspaper, plastic bags, bottle caps, and pipe cleaners. At first I wanted to make an entire scene out of the recycled materials but I then decided that it would be better If I made a single object that represented the environment completely out recycled materials.

This is my first draft. I wanted to make a scene out of cotton balls, newspapers, and bottle caps. After a while I decided that this wasn't going to work because the outcome wouldn't look like it took me all marking period to do. I then moved on to my next idea.

My next idea was to make a cardboard recycling bin with the recycle logo on it. While doing this project however I experienced several problems. After I finished cutting out the pieces that were supposed to be glued onto the boxes, I couldn't a good enough box. I then decided that this project was no longer any good and once again moved on to my next idea.

My final idea was making a flower out of recycled material. I particularly liked this one because it represents a small piece of the environment. I chose to make the leaves out of newspaper and plastic. And to make the middle of the flower by using a bottle cap. The stem potentially would be made out of green pipe cleaners. This project fits for because its made completely out of recycled materials. Also because I like to cut and paste which is how most of this project is done. I painted over the plastic to give the petals some color and then glued plastic bag over it to be able to see that this project is actually recycled.

This marking period, I had difficulties trying to grasp a idea that my heart was into. First I decided to make a art project that was very abstract, using recycled glass, bottles, and other materials that would usually land into a landfill. That project wasn't a fail but it wasn't heartfelt. So I decided to do something that I do best, poetry. Every time I write a poem a truth bleeds out. In order for this project to be advertised and different I've decided to spray paint it on the windows in the art studio. I currently don't have any images of what this project will look like. It takes many steps and hard work to complete it. I had to measure the windows, figurre out the font size, and cut out my stencils for the spray paint. I have a sample of what the poem is: "

If it isn’t the latest fashion trend we won’t allow the human species to be recycled,

Our hearts to be reused, more like thrown in a landfill because you can’t be saved here,

No matter how many shirts we decide to wear that claim we are going green, we don’t change we are selfish

At first, ideas for this project weren't exactly in high supply. But finally it hit me, a way to incorporate my own ideas with the task at hand, to make something involving the environment, and my own style as an artist. I took a note from the new Pacific Sunwear bags that look like this..

But I adapted it for this project and my skill level. What this is, is a progression with shapes with objects coming through them that have a message or a pattern. Since my project had to involve recycling and being more aware of our environment, my project features things harming the environment while on opposite side it has this that help/save our environment. As a piece, I'm proud of my work. I've attempted things like this before but have never been able to finish it. I also think my message is clear, all these things are are hurting the environment and the ecosystem have to be changed into things that not only do not hurt the it but help them.

Process:

1. I started small with pencil on the negative bubble pattern just starting with only a few objects in them and with the beginning of the center piece.

2. Then I finished the outline bubble pattern with the negative factors on the environment.

3. I then added the positive side of the bubble stream.

4. I then began to add color using water color pencils.

5. After finishing coloring with chalk pastels all I had to do was write my name on the back and be done.

I found it interesting that we needed to use recycled materials for our first quarter project. It is unlike anything I have ever been assigned, in art class or otherwise. I like the idea of doing something different for art, but trying to stick to recycled materials made things a little more difficult for me. At first I wasn't sure what I was going to do but I realized that I had a huge pile of bottles that was just growing day in and day out, and I decided then that I wanted to do something involving recycling plastic bottles.

First I decided to build a small scale raft with several bottles, some tape, card board, a plastic bag, and some pencils. This idea didn't translate very well when I tried to bring it into physical form. In the process of building the raft I realized what I wanted to do, and it didn't involve boats of any form. I decided to make a small comic strip showing the steps that some recycled materialS go through before they are redistributed. I used bits of plastic bottles and a few caps to cover the pictures somewhat. I usually stick to drawing or sculptures. I don't feel very confident when painting, so I chose to stick with something that I felt more comfortable with.

Art. Such a small word but into it goes so much meaning; So many different forms and interpretations of this three-letter word. But what does it mean to be an artist? It means having the ability to put down every emotion and every feeling inside of you into a picture, a dance routine, and a sculpture. It means being able to paint a picture of your mind for the world to see; and that I why I do what I do. I want the world to feel who I am; to touch and see and feel what’s been inside of my mind; my heart. When I work with paint I am reminded that the world is a colorful place and that we’ve stepped out of the black and white days into a colorful and diverse place. I begin a piece by thinking about the assignment and how I can add my own person experiences into it.

I know a piece is done when I feel that it’s complete and I’ve got my message across. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of happiness and expressive success. When people see my work, I'd like them to step into my shoes and look into my mind.

When it comes to my artwork, it’s really all about how I feel. Honestly all of my work has to be thought out in my headfirst so when it comes to decision-making I try my hardest to think about what fits best in my piece and what makes the most sense in my mind. I like making my work really out there to reflect my bold and expressively different personality. When it comes to different themes of my artwork, I try to keep it real. I like making my art a reflection of my life and what is happening. It gives me a way to document my life in a sense; some girls have journals where they jot down all of their emotions, I have little pieces of artwork to serve as memoirs throughout my life.

My current artwork is a heart made of recycled newspapers and other re used objects. In my current life, I am going through some hardships with love and so my piece is centered on a heart. The recycled paper is coming from the top in many different kind of untamed ways to represent the wild and untamed habits of teenage love and love in general. In the center of the heart is a silver square that is different and more luminous as compared to the rest of the piece. This represents the different being inside the core of each person; weather it’s a strong and bold center inside of the cowardly girl or a scared and hurt boy inside a cold and courageous man. This also can relate to the heart of the earth and how it needs our help to survive and we need to remember recycling our resources is like the reusing of blood to our heart.

I found it pretty interesting that we had to make a project out of recycled materials. When my art teacher was explaining this project I was not certain on what I was going to do. So I started to do research and I figured out I wanted to do something I could use or someone else could. So I decided to make a purse.
My progress on the purse was actually good. From doing this project I learned how to sew. When I started this project I did not know how to sew and as I was finishing up the project I seemed like I was a pro. This project is not fully finished because it is missing one thing. The one thing that it is missing is a handle. I left out the handle because I actually decided that I wanted to make it a clutch bag, which means I would either have to make a zipper out of materials that were recycled or buy one; which that we were avoiding.

In my Art class, I had a project that had to do with recycling. We had to use things that either were recyclables or weren't depending on what we wanted and make something out of them. I personally am a big fan of art, and I enjoy to do it because I feel it brings out my most creative side.

A lot of my themes are people. My best things to draw are girls. Since my theme is so common, I decided to try something new and make something more nature-like.

What I decided to do was a tree made out of tree materials. As I got into it, I started to realize all of the components that a tree goes through to become the piece of computer paper on my desk, or the cardboard box at my door. So I began to think that if I was going to make a tree, I might as well express what a lot of trees are going through when a human (i.e me) is involved. I made my lean, and made an axe to "cut" it down. So not only have I made a tree out of tree products, but I'm also trying to express the things that seem to be happening way too much to our nature.

As our first project in art class, we had to make posters to put around the school. Our goal was to get other students to save bottle caps and give them to us so that we can use them in our art. However, I can't post a picture of my poster because I can't find it anywhere in the school.

According to the dictionary, art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. I personally think that art has many different meanings. Some people think that art is something that relieves their stress and get let them be creative.

I described art as an expression. The colors can describe the person's feelings. Each other has different meanings. Artist usually put colors in their paintings to represent their emotions. I personally don't use art to express my feelings. It's just not my thing.

For my art piece, I decided to do something unique. I thought many things to do, but it wouldn't click for me. Until the last minute. I used my knowledge about recycling and my artistic hands to lead me to the idea. I was stacking these yogurt cups up and I thought about the earth. The earth has green as the grass and then blue for skies. So I decided to draw the beauty of earth onto the cups. The only thing I would change is the timing. I waited until the last minute which was not a good idea and text out how to stick the yogurt cups together.

In my art class we are studying the creation of art through recycled materials. I found this very interesting because the idea of creating something new out of something old is phenomenal. But I found that doing this was not easy.

At first I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I went through about 10 different ideas. Finally I came up with this idea of making a pyramid out of bottle caps. I thought this was a good idea because I have different things going on in my life. It's important to me that I prioritize them. If I don't then I will be consumed by all the things I have to do. I think that a pyramid is a good way of showing, while using bottle caps.

For my art project, I took inspiration from "The Simpson's Movie". In the film, the city of Springfield got quarantined because of all the toxic waste they let off into the river. I took my own spin on this idea by making a miniature version of Philadelphia.

When I made this I didn't need a lot of stuff. I got a box from my dad's job and some old boxes from creams and medicine.

First I started to sketch out some ideas of a futuristic city. After I got my ideas sketched out, I began to gather my materials and build a mini city. Here are some pictures (coming soon)

When starting this project I didn't have any clue of what recycled material I would use to make a project. Every time my parents go shopping they bring back plasti bags and put them under the sink and don't use them. Since I knew that I liked messenger bags because I get frustrated carrying backpacks, I decided I would use plastic bags to make a messenger bag.

After coming up with an idea I researched different ways you can make a messenger bag out of plastic bags. When I started working on the bag I realized that sewing everything by hand would take a really long time because I don't have a sewing machine. Therefore I changed my idea to making a laptop case out of plastic bags a an old non-hooded sweatshirt. I used what I had from the messenger bag and add on more bags if it needed to be bigger. After looking at the design of this I realized I didn't want to do this either.

Now I am back to the idea of making a messenger bag out of plastic bags, but with a different take on this. I decided that I will fuse the bags together using an iron and wax paper the same way I would for the laptop case or the first messenger bag I was going to make. After fusing them together I will take a hot glue gun and join the bags together, then cut and finish joining the rest of the bag together. Once I'm done making the bag design I will sew on a strap and hot glue a bag flap on to the bag.

When Ms. hull told us that our Q1 art benchmark was going to be based around recycling the first thought that came to my mind is all the waste I see along the beaches and how it is affecting our wild life. At First I had no idea what I wanted my base to be and what the purpose of wild life would come across in my art work. Later the thought came to me and I picture my base to be a sea structure with a fish based scenario and how it is affecting and turning them into something they are not. I took recycled bottles to use as the fishes bodies and things that would be trash and can't be recycled to show others how the wild life is affecting the animals bodies and the sea around us.

When it comes to helping out the environment and saving wildlife I take a big part into that. We only have one planet so we should keep it clean not only for us but for the animals. Incorporating my artwork into project was a great idea because our community is very important and with recycling and helping the environment it doesn't just benefit animals it benefits us to a healthier lifestyle and living atmosphere.

The idea behind this piece of art is the idea of life coming from the strangest of places; this specific example being technology. It is meant to symbolize that I’ve noticed that even though some people think that technology can bring about the demise & downfall of society, it can also bring us life in various ways.

I collected materials that I felt could represent technology: an extension cord, dvds & cds, a mother board, a cd stand, glue, & wire. I glued each cd & dvd, stacking them onto the cd stand. Then I cut the extension cord, glued it to the cd stand, & wrapped it with the wire tightly to make it stand up straight. I then glued the motherboard to the top, to make the sculpture look like a flower in a pot.

The project was of importance to me, and using the recycled pieces of technology really made the project good for the environment. It also made sure I showed that life really can come out of the weirdest part of the world. This project showed me that simple things and simple people can make a difference in the world.

Listening to music is a way for me to detach myself form the world when I'm stressed.

No matter where I am, if i can find a way to listen to music, then i would be happy. This is why i decided to make headphones and music notes out of newspaper. Seeing as no one barely reads the paper I thought it would be best to combine something that people almost always do like listen to music when they are stressed, with something that people wouldn't even consider to do when they are stressed, like read a paper.

At first, when I began to wonder how I was going to make headphones, i simply decided to make them 2-dimensional. After i saw how it would turn out, I thought to my self that wouldn't making it 3-dimensional make it more appealing to the eye.

So there you have it. A pair of headphones slightly larger than normal ones, that represent two things that people wouldn't combine. I mean, who would want to read a boring newspaper while listening to awesome music? I know I wouldn't want to.

A Very Trashy Dress

Artist Statement
When I think of statements like "Go Green," I think of a fashion statement. I realize that it is terribly pessimistic of me, but today, it would seem that when one says they are "green", it is almost like they are saying that they just bought that expensive pair of jeans everyone wishes they had. I constantly see celebrities on the news talking about what they have done for the environment.
Observing this unfortunate reality, I perceived an idea for an art project. I figured that if I take this hypothetical fashion statement, and turned it into an actual fashion statement, I could turn the negative to a positive. This is why I decided to create a dress out of a recyclable materials. I chose garbage bags as my medium, simply because they are black. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the phrase "green is the new black", and because of that phrase, I coined my own, stating that "black is the new green".
Unfortunately, I was unable to finish my dress. It took me a very long time to figure out a design, but eventually I settled on a v-neck dress with cascading newspaper along one seam. Around the later days of my process, after cutting, gluing (I still have some burns), and assembling the dress, I realized that I didn't have enough time to finish. When I realized this, I found out another horrible truth. My mother's boyfriend was looking for a trash bag, and picked up my dress. attempting to open the "bag", he tore the art by both seams. That was about four weeks worth of work, down the drain. You can imagine how livid I was with him.

Recycling Project

When starting this project I didn’t have a set idea on what I wanted to do. I never had a solid idea on how I wanted to make a project out of recycled material. At first I thought, wow a project made of recycled material this is a good idea. But I didn’t want to add none recycled material to it, I wanted to be made out of all recycled material. After thinking about a few ideas and sketching some ideas out I started coming up with some projects. I didn’t want the projects of projects just to do. I wanted them to be connected to me or relate to me somehow. What I had decided to do was paint over used cardboard boxes and cut and past letters and words from recycled magazines. After cutting out the letters and words I planned on making a poem about our environment and how recycling is a good idea. At first I didn’t have a poem on how to write it so I found a recycling poem that a 4^th grader had made, cited it and used it as part of my project. The world’s greatest artwork wasn’t finished in a day, and neither was mine. But I plan to finish the poem idea and place it on the school wall so that every one can see it.

Another idea I had was similar to the artist we saw at the exhibit. Her name was Aurora Robson. She took her nightmares and made them into her own creations. She took plastic caps, bottles, and string. She cut them and made them look like jellyfish and flowers hanging from the ceiling. My idea was to make the bottle caps and bottles into a collected of flowers. In my head I thought of paining them a light color so the glossy effect from the bottle still showed. I just started this project a few weeks ago and it’s taking me some time to do this project. I hope to also complete this project for the second quarter benchmark as well.

These projects that we are doing is tying into a quote that we are all probably know. Someone else’s trash is another person treasure. The students of advanced art took this quote into consideration without even realizing it. We’re helping our community and giving the thrash/ recycled material a voice. A voice that hopefully will be heard.

So at the beginning of this quarter I was assigned basically to design something to represent recycling or the environment or something along that line. And that was it. That was the only direction that I was really given for this project. This meant that I had a large span of freedom to work with on this project. I wasn’t sure how to handle that first because of how many ideas that I had rushing through my eyes.

The first idea that I actual liked was to build a city out of bottles and cans. I would make it look like some kind of futurist thing because of how the inside of a can and bottles can be shiny if light hits them right.

It seemed like a good idea, but when I started to try to work it out, I couldn’t figure out how I wanted to make it work I didn’t know how to organize the different bottles and in the end it just didn’t work out the way I wanted it to.

The next big Idea I got was in the middle of class. There was a bunch of foam and then looking at it made me want to make a table from it. Maybe paint a cool design on it to represent recycling. So I started on that. Then I saw my friend who had extra pieces from what she was working on. As I was looking at them I started thinking about how most big things in America have some kind of mascot. Wendy’s has the Ginger Girl, McDonalds has the clown, Kmart has the light bulb guy. But why doesn’t recycling have an official mascot to stand for it. I mean, there’s just that little symbol thing. “I should make one.” I thought to myself. And so that’s what I’ve been working with so far. I went with the feel of the material I was using and in a way, let the art create itself. I cut out a head and the used my friends extra piece and ended up with a horse bird thing that had headphones.

Right now I’m in the process of painting it, but I think I want to build a setting around it. The reason it’s not done is because I feel as though I need to do a little more with it. There’s something missing from it that I have to have for it to be complete. Also, I ran out of paint in the middle of painting so I need to go buy some more.

My project for this period is culinary arts. I love to cook but have never really dabbled in the world of baking. Please bare with me through this experience because I am still learning all the skills required to be a successful baker. I will choose at least one recipe a week and post it on this blog. I hope you enjoy my baking and are inspired to bake yourself.

The first recipe I chose to make was lemon squares. They have been one of my favorite desserts for a long time but I had never made them before. They were relatively easy to make and were very good! If I were to make them again I would use a wider pan in order to make the crust thinner. I hope you enjoy my blog post and the recipe.

Ingredients:

For Crust-

1/2 pound unsalted butter (room temperature)

1/2 granulated sugar

2 cups flour

1/8 teaspoon salt

For Lemon Layer-

6 large eggs (room temperature)

1 2/3 cups granulated sugar

2 tablespoons grated lemon zest

1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice

1 cup flour

First Step: Preheat the oven to 350 F and grease your cooking pan.

Step 2: Cream the butter and sugar in an electric mixer until mixed lightly.

Step 3: Mix the flour and salt in a separate bowl and then slowly add to the butter and sugar mixture. Mix until combined.

Step 4: Dump the dough into the greased baking dish. Flatten and press it onto the bottom of the baking dish. Let chill in refrigerator.

Step 5: Take the crust out of the fridge once it is chilled and cook it for 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Once cooked let it cool down.

Step 6: Whisk together the eggs, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and flour.

Step 7: Pour lemon mixture over crust and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

Step 8: Let cool and enjoy!

The second recipe I made was rice crispy treats. This recipe was not very advanced but my brother needed them for one of his classes so I volunteered to help him make them. The funnest part was cooking with my brother and the bars turned out well to. One mistake I made in this recipe was turning the stove on too high and burning the marshmallows so next time I make this I will make sure not to have the temperature too high. Ingredients: There are only three ingredients that you need for this recipe

-Rice Krispies

-Butter

-Marshmallows

Step 1: Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a pan

Step 2: Add pack of Marshmallows

Step 3: Stir marshmallows over medium heat and add half a box of rice krispies

Step 4: Mix the rice krispies with the melted marshmallows and pour into pan

Step 5: Let cool and enjoy!

For my third recipe I made Arroz Con Leche. This was the hardest recipe I made. I think that I may have messed up on the directions when I made it because the consistency was very liquidly, like soup, when was supposed to be thick, like pudding. I think it was like this because it didnt cool before I served it, if I had let it cool it might have thickened up more. I hope you enjoy my post!

Ingredients:

- 1 cup long grain rice

- 2 cinnamon sticks

- 2 strips lemon zest

- 3 whole cloves

- 4 cups water

- 1 egg

- 3 cups whole milk

- 1/4 teaspoon salt

- 1 tablespoon vanilla

-1 can condensed milk

Step 1: Soak rice, cinnamon sticks, lemon zest, cloves, and water in a sauce pan for an hour

Step 2: After one hour, heat the rice on high until it boils, then turn it to a simmer and let it cook for 10-12 more minutes.

Step 3: While the rice is cooking beat the egg in a bowl and add the milk. Mix well.

Step 4: Add the milk and egg mixture, condensed milk, salt, and vanilla extract to the rice for 25-35 minutes or until desired consistency.

Step 5: Enjoy!

For my second quarter art project I did what I did naturally, draw. I love to sketch and especially sketch anime characters. Lately I've been really nerdy watching all my old cartoons from when I was younger and it gave me the inspiration to try drawing like the professionals. These pictures aren't very creative but I chose to do this type of assignment to test my skills as an artist. The pictures show something about myself as well. Each one is my favorite character from a specific show. The progress of my artwork is each individual picture. I found that it would simpler, instead of taking picture line by line, to take each picture and make a collage.

SECOND/THIRD/FOURTH PICTURES
These pictures were added late I worked on this piece until the day it was due and it really isn't meant to be my graded project but more so a piece I was still greatly proud of. This picture, like the others, is based off of an anime show. I decided to replicate this girl , Kanna, because of her pure nature. In the show she is in fact an incarnation of the villain but her nature is to have no opinion and to stay mostly neutral. She listens, watches, and does what she is told to do. The simplicity of her actual style is another characteristic that pulled me in. I love this piece because this is the first time I have worked with paints and accomplished my goal and the artwork came out the way I had originally imagined.

For my fourth recipe I made Snicker doodle Cookie Bars. They are essentially the same thing as the cookie but in bar form. These were super easy to make, it took me a total of ten minutes to mix everything and get it in the oven. Overall they tasted very good. If I were to make these again I would use a different pan so that the bars were thinner. Because of the pan I used it took about an extra ten minutes to cook than the suggested time.

Ingredients for Bars:

- 1 cup butter

- 1 1/2 cups sugar

- 3 eggs

- 1/4 cups sour cream

- 2 cups flour

- 1 tsp baking powder

- 1 tsp baking soda

- 1 tsp cream of tatar

- 1/2 tsp salt

Ingredients for Sugar and Cinnamon Mix:

- 1/3 cup sugar

- 1 tbsp cinnamon

Step 1: Cream the sugar and butter

Step 2: Add the eggs one at a time

Step 3: Add the sour cream

Step 4: In a separate bowl combine the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

Step 5: Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture

Step 6: Grease pan

Step 7: In small bowl combine the sugar and cinnamon to make sugar cinnamon mix

Step 8: Coat the bottom of the pan with the cinnamon and sugar mix

Step 9: Spread the dough in the pan

Step 10: Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until done

Yadi Angeles Q2: Personalized December

I've always loved art, and I spend a lot of my life working on drawings and paintings. But this quarter, a lot of holidays and special occasions for someone special to me were coming up. So I decided to make them a present instead of buying one, and to make something different from the field I'm most used to. I usually pick themes of emotions that are most dominant in my life. I take my time when it comes to my work, partly because I want it to be done right, but mostly because my motivation is just the satisfaction of seeing my drawing skills become more refined as time passes. This quarter I have found that when I have a more common goal of someone else's happiness as opposed to just a "good" grade, I am better motivated to take on creative projects and to spend every free minute I have to work on it. My first piece is a bracelet with a personalized charm. It is based on the person it was made for. He has a signature of himself as a little cartoon that he likes to sign his drawings with. So I took a copy of that signature and made it from metal from a can. I had decided on a can because I wanted it to be more permanent than paper or foam. When I first thought of a charm, my mind automatically went to metal, and the next thought was that my resources could easily get me a can and scissors that could cut through metal. I used a cloth to cover the back of it so that it won't cut through the skin, and that became a birthday present.

My second piece was for the same person who happens to love video games and specifically Mario games. So I made a personalized question block from cardboard paper using pictures from the internet and images from playing the game myself. I also cut out items that are usually found when a question block is hit: a star, a green/red mushroom, a feather, and a fire flower. After painting all of these items, I made it a little more personal inside the box, painting it my own way and making a story and picture. After glueing everything together, and putting all of the items inside the box, I added in chocolate coins. There were mess ups, and my biggest challenge was the time limit and the time the paint wanted to dry. But everything was finished the way my mind wanted it, and bringing joy to the person all of this was meant for brought a more accomplished and happy feeling inside me than any of my other work could have ever done.

Love it is the most wanted feeling in the world. People have died for it, killed for it and done thing they will regret just to be acknowledged by it. Love is a powerful emotion. Within this emotion is an eruption of many other. While thinking of what I wanted to create I listened to my favorite type of music, R&B.

Over the break I found an old coloring book that was based on Princesses. I then realized that the world places this idea into the mind of young girls that love is supposed to be like fairytales.

I feel that the symbolism in my art work shows the true identity of love. Love can me cruel, but there can be bliss. The Prince and princess show the happiness in love and the ideal 50/50 division and share of the couples feelings. But in reality there is never a 50/50 split.

The flowers represent the sincerity and thoughts that run through our minds naturally. It is the way of saying 'I'm sorry' while also meaning 'I thought of you'.

The black and red heart in the background is the pain and suffering that is bled through every day from the unloved.

The anime eyes are the millions upon millions of tears shed over love. The diamond ring represents what society tells us we have to do once we are in love.

In the end every thing is layered over with a thin veil of black, which represents the ripped up notes, thrown away roses, and burnt photographs that are the cause of break-up when lies told you you were in pure and faithful love.

I am not looking down on love, i am simply trying to help make it more realistic not a FAIRYTALE.

Callie Monroe Marking Period Two Recipe 5

For this recipe I made cake balls. The process of making them was pretty time consuming but also fun. They turned out really good! In this recipe I had a lot of trouble melting the chocolate. I initially tried to use a double broiler but ended up ruining most of the white chocolate. I then put the rest of the white chocolate I had in the microwave, it melted really well but I only had enough to cover two cake balls. So I then used the microwave to melt the milk chocolate. Ingredients:
- Chocolate Cake
- 8 ounces Cream Cheese
- 2 cups Confectioners Sugar
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Chocolate/White Chocolate Chips
- Sprinkles (for decorating)

Step One: Bake Cake

Step 2: Let cool completely
Step 3: In a bowl, crumble the cake with a fork and your fingers until it is in fine crumbs

Step 4: In a separate bowl whip the cream cheese, butter, confectioners sugar, and milk together

Step 5: Pour the cake crumbs into the cream cheese mixture and mix it together with your fingers until the cake and mixture are completely combined

Step 6: Once combined cover with plastic wrap and put in fridge until it is firm

Step 7: Cover baking sheets with parchment paper

Step 8: Roll the cake mixture into balls and place on the covered baking sheets

Step 9: Cover the balls with plastic wrap and put in the freezer until the balls harden

Step 10: Melt chocolate (I melted mine in the microwave) and dip cake balls in, then dip in sprinkles or other decorations and place back on the baking sheet to harden

For my free studio I decided to work with a canvas. When I first started to paint I wasn’t too sure of what I wanted to do. Each day I came into art class I began to get an idea of what I wanted to do. The first thing I had in mind was to make a black, gray and white picture. I wanted to see if I could get my ideas on the canvas without using any color. When most people see pictures the first thing they tend to talk about is the different color paint that is used.

On day I walked into class and I was not having a good morning but to a surprise I did not want to make a picture with out color I had the sudden urge to make a colorful painting on a new background. There was not a way to paint over the canvas in all white and not see what was under it so I found a big paintbrush and painted the entire background black. As soon as I was finished an idea of what to do popped into my head. I wanted to make a big tear drop, that was all blue with green and yellow at the bottom. At the bottom of the teardrop is the water as the raindrop is falling. The bottom is my favorite part. When I first started at it I was not too sure what look I was going for but as I added more color to it I knew exactly.

The rest of the background that was not covered by any other color but black was the easiest part of the painting to cover because I wanted to use the colors that gave off a bright essence coming off the back. After that was done I still felt as if something was missing from the painting. I then looked at my hands because there was paint on them, so I decided to put handprints on it. The only color I could think of was the white to make it pop. After looking at the white hands the painting still didn’t feel complete and the only color I could think off, of the top of my head that complements white was red. I did not want to paint the red on I wanted it to look any other way but painted. So I used my finger and scooped up large amounts of red paint on my finger and dripped it on the white hands. When I was finished I felt that my painting was complete.

Before the second marking period was over my painting I did on the canvas was finished. I wanted to do another project with bottle caps because we had so many left over from the fist marking period project. So I then decided I wanted to make a big hand out of bottle caps.

I brought some hot cut to put all the caps together. I had to pick out the caps I wanted to use and size them to one another. Anther way I kept track of them was to making different little marks on the bottoms of the caps I was using and going to use. When I began I started to stack all the caps on top of one another then as it became taller I got the idea to cover the entire thing with aluminum foil to make it shinny and shape all the things I felt did not come out right in the end.

Right after I finished building the forearm with the caps it was time to do the palm of the hand but I no longer wanted to make a giant hand. From turning the piece upside down to add the aluminum foil to it I then got the idea to make a vase.

When my piece became a vase I wanted to add color to it and put flower in it. I painted different colors in strips and I add some colorful flower paper. The last class was when I finished the vase and started to add the flower because our art is due on Friday 1/14/11 I did not want to put a picture of my vase up wit the flowers. For some reason I do not like when my artwork is viewed when I do not feel as if it is finished. So I have picture of just the finished vase.

I had so much fun this quarter in art. It was really cool to be able to do something that I am interested in. Before this project I was never much of a baker. I'm not the best measurer so I always found myself messing up a recipe because the amount of each ingredient I used was inaccurate. I now really enjoy baking. I did this project in the hopes that I would become a better baker and I think I have accomplished that goal.
I first began this process by finding recipes that I thought would a) taste good and b) challenge my baking skills in some way. I then began the process of gathering materials (ingredients) and beginning to bake. The recipes I chose were all very different, some were easier than others but they all represented a learning experience.
As I stated before baking was never something that I really did. I love to cook but baking always seemed like something that was super hard. I have now gained an appreciation for it.

For Quarter two, I wanted to try and do something new at least every two weeks. Since I like to do a lot of abstract art using photoshop, I made a few things testing out some new brushes and methods. For one of my art pieces, I used a new brush set that mimics the moon. I used this along with a layer of stars for a poster size image of the moon and stars. I further used my other artwork to make new stuff. I had a lot of fun this quarter because I took a lot of peoples' ideas and suggestions to help make my art masterpieces.

For my most important piece, the Silent Wolf, I got the idea to draw a wolf for my friend. I was sketching and retouching my first drafts until I got my rough pencil sketch. Then I carefully traced it with a sharpie. After erasing the pencil from under the sharpie for cleaner lines, I took a picture of it and added color in photoshop. After I did that, I decided to add a moon and stars to the background. To make it easier to work with, I made the moon and stars in a separate poster shaped canvas in Photoshop. After finishing that, I copied the wolf with color onto the moon and stars. Since Christmas was coming up, I wanted to surprise my friend with it by adding in his name. I added some after-effects to the text and cleaned up some edges to finish.

The other main portion of my art time was devoted to an intricate youtube layout. It took a lot of work to make this. First, I had to do a bit of research to figure out the dimensions I would need to make it. Then I had to make the difficult guide lines for the boxes. Instead, after many futile attempts, I got the guide lines from another layout. I then began to add the stuff my friend wanted. After a lot of tweaking with the dimensions, and a lot of time later (10+ hours) I finally had the image perfect. Credit to one of my friends for helping with this too.

The rest of the artwork is just stuff I worked on during this marking period. The wolves are in order of process. Pencil -> Sharpie -> Final Silent Wolf. Then the Moon poster and the manifest of both joined.

I did this Comic to represent the 23.59% that makes up my life, video games. It's not only amazing what people do to make video games and make those little pictures of bodies move, their dedication is incredible. Anyway, I wanted to make a little tribute to video games in this comic. I intended it to have around 3 chapters, so everyone could read it and be like "I know who that is! I played with him in ____" but that didn't go as planned. In the future, I might keep working on this, it's not the end of this yet!

I started out finding "sprites" which are essentially all the frames it takes for a character to move in any pixel looking game (like Super Mario). They are 32-bit sprites, which means that they allow basically more detail. There are also 16bit and 8 bit, which are waaaayyyyyy old. I used Photoshop to get rid of picture backgrounds, and to cut and paste background and characters into pictures. It seems like it's easy, but finding the pictures and then resizing them is a lot of handwork. It's easier said than done. I used Photoshop because it naturally comes easy to me, it's not hard to use.

I've done sprite comics before, when I was a bit younger. They were bad quality and there was no definite story line in them. Now that I learned how to be a better writer (I sure hope so!), writing the story was the best part of this! I want to make a series with these and put them on a blog and update them weekly, like a page a week. I sure would like to continue this, and hopefully finish the series as I wanted to. So, that's basically it. Video games are a part of me, and although it may be silly to some it's a part that keeps me intact with my inner child. I'm not an addict though! I'm totally one of those guys that's okay with dying in a game just to text back!

For this marking period, we were allowed to pick the project we wanted to do. I didn't really know what I wanted to do. It was either photography, or do some drawing. After a lot of thinking, I decided that I wanted to draw the Eiffel Tower.
I drew the Eiffel Tower last year, as one of my brainstorms for the periodic table assignment, but I didn't use that one for my element picture. So, I thought that this time, I would try it again. I liked the one I did last year, but I wanted this one to look different than that. My plan was to have this one set at nighttime, with the stars in the background. I had a lot of inspiration for this project. I think that Paris is a really beautiful place. I've had a picture of the Eiffel Tower that I fixed up in picnik as my desktop picture for a long time. So, I used that, and other pictures I found to help me. I also used howstuffworks.com to help me.
I have not yet finished this. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would to do the sketch. Once I finished that, I had to get the canvas, and then draw it on there. So, now all I need to do is paint the canvas.

Toni Marshall Quarter 2

Throughout the second quarter I spent most of my time cutting out the stencil for my project I have about two left. My plans are to spray paint the poem onto the windows. The project is very time consuming and difficult. Letters such as O,R,A and G's were the hardest letters to cut out because in order to preserve the actual shape of the letter you must cut out little rectangles that connected the rest of the paper and the middle space of the letter and cut around it. I had many trails trying to get the correct grove on how to cut neat and with accuracy. There were 15 sheets each containing about 25 letters. By the 3 quarter I expect to be finished this project. I am trying to now figure out a way to preserve the paper just in case I mess up the first trail of spray painting because like Mrs.Hull says" We se you up to fail." I will reflect on what i need to do in order to improve my work and hopefully create a project I am more proud of than now.

For the second marking period we had the option to create whatever kind of artwork we wanted. Personally I liked this. It gave me the freedom to do some of the things I'm particularly good at without really any limitations. This is different from the last marking period because we were basically given an idea that we had to work with opposed to what were doing this quarter. Looking at some of the projects that are already posted you can see how versatile our projects are from comics to sketches. This marking period is personally my favorite.
For my artwork I chose to expand on a skill that I previously learned in my Freshman year. As a freshman I learned how to print a drawing on a linoleum block, and also carve the drawing out to resemble a stamp. I chose to sketch out an "S" because it's the first letter of my name. I wanted to make sure it was something more challenging and time consuming to sketch so I chose to draw a fancy looking "S" with a lot of detail. I then painted over the linoleum and printed on sheets of paper to make 1 collage of different colors.
If I were to do this project differently I would definitely be more consistent and work on using my time more wisely. However I am proud of the work I am putting up, but I know that if my time was used more efficiently I probably would have had more prints to chose from. Another problem I experienced was not using the same kind of paper for each of my prints which effected the quality of my artwork when I was picking prints to choose from. A lot of them were on different textured construction papers and wouldn't give my art work the effect I wanted them to have.
Overall I am really proud of the piece I produced, and I hope that you like it too.

I enjoyed the second quarter, because there was more freedom in what could be done. I decided to do some sketches, because its just what I was more comfortable with. I used a sketch book and a couple of pencils. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do at first, so I just used the first things I saw and sketched them. I started off with some that were simpler and moved on to ones with more detail. Before this project, I hadn't sketched anything in a long time. As I started to get used to sketching again, things became easier. One thing that was challenging for me was keeping things proportional, especially ears and eyes. The last sketch I made is a self portrait from a side view.

I chose to sketch Murdoc, 2-D, and Noodle from the Gorillaz. I left out the fourth member, and did a drawing of myself instead. The album artwork is what lead me to make the self portrait, even though I had originally intended on drawing the fourth member (Russel). I was in the process of drawing Russel when the sketch started to remind me of myself so I decided to turn it into a self portrait.

So in the second quarter my main goal was to basically "go with the flow". In this second quarter, for my art project I decided to just express out all the things that I couldn't seem to say properly with words. For this second quarter, I wanted to just take the essence of me and plaster it out onto a canvas, paper, or what ever else I could find. So Here's a series of pictures that I did and a little background behind a few of them.

Laying in my bed one night during the quarter I had this horrid feeling inside and I couldn't figure out what it was. A friend of mine name Chuck was trying to help me find the words for it but nothing he suggested helped. In the end, i came up with the idea to draw what I was feeling. So i did. I placed my pencil down and then just the feeling that I had stuck on me be conveyed through my pencil's tip. Sense then, every time I have a feeling i can't describe in words, I write it out.

So December 26th was one of my best friend's birthday. As a present i brought a giant foam board and drew a picture for her. Over the time we've been friends i noticed that when ever I started to draw something around her, she usually ended up taking it and finishing it for me. So with this board I intentionally left things uncolored and left certain lines untraced over so that she could finish it and then she'd have something big and pretty that we made together. The reason this is here is because my best friend has been such a huge impact on me and this picture was meant to represent are bond.

Up until about a month ago, all the pictures I've taken of myself have been awkward or my hand has been covering a part of my face due to insecurities but I finally managed to take a picture of my face that I liked. I did a little softening and added a border on a photo editing program i have called photo scape and was very pleased with the end result.

This picture is kind of simple. I was watching the movie called "Happy Feet" and I kept wondering what I would look like as a penguin. So I drew myself as a flightless bird.

For our second quarter project we were given the opportunity to create whatever type of artwork we wanted to. I personally loved the idea of this because it gave me freedom to express my feelings in many different ways and show the many different sides of who I am. I decided to go with a more poetic project this quarter and express my everyday feelings in a poetry portfolio with images of myself that shows who I really am on an everyday basis. I chose to do this type of project because I know there is a secret side to me that nobody ever gets to see and I thought it would be good for everyone to take a look into my mind and see the way I really feel about the things I go through in life. This project is not fully completed yet because I have to take my time and go with my emotions when I write and I know I have more to let out so when I feel like I have shown all the sides of me that I want to show I will print all of my poetry and photos and put them in a portfolio book so that the work can be seen up close.

If I were to do this project differently I think I would try to dig deeper into who I am and try to really get raw with my emotions. I think I was a little scared to let people into my heart and soul with my work this time so next time I would get more real with myself and come to terms with who I am before I tried to let other people know who I am.

In the photos below there are just a few samples of some of the poetry I have already completed and some of the photos of myself that I edited and created to show the sides of who I am. Because my writing is so personal and close to me and how I'm feeling not all work could be uploaded but here's some of who I am I hope you enjoy what you see.

During the second quarter I have been building a table with chess board spray painted on top. he reason I did this is because i really like building things and I really stretched the art in it by adding a black finish with the chess board.

I feel that when I have the freedom to what I want that i can produce really good work. Not being restricted is a better way to expand your artistic talent.Also when you have the freedom to do whatever you can show what you can do without being guided.

Beauty in a Disaster_Quarters 2 and 1

In the second quarter I focused on using different types of materials to draw the same image. One evening I found myself watching a PBS special on Bob Ross. He was instructing viewers on the importance of different techniques and methods. His focus was too on nature and its natural beauty. His idea about landscape and finding beauty in the middle of disaster are what lead my final project this quarter.

I chose to draw a tornado in the middle of a grass field because tornadoes are some of the most destructive natural disasters. The rip up and destroy everything in their path. They leave every thing out of place, and yet they make a new landscape, one where beauty must be found in the midst of disaster.

This is the first drawing. It was done with oil pastel and in color.

This was the second drawing. It was done in black charcoal.

The final image was done as a pencil sketch.

In the first quarter we focused on recycling and the human impact on the environment. We collected bottle caps. The collection of the bottle caps was to help inspire the pieces created by the students during that quarter and to remove them from the environment.

My sketch is of a hand reaching back toward the earth. There is a small recycle symbol in the top right had corner. The hand is pure. It is white, but surrounding it are the negative energies that accompany pollution. The earth matches its environment. Polluted. As the hand reaches back to support the earth, the negative energies fade away.

This is the final product.

For second quarter, we focused on what we wanted to do. I wanted to paint which I did, but I just stopped. I didn't know what to draw. I had one point of focus but it didn't come clear to me anymore. So I decided to make a purse out of a shirt. I had a plain t-shirt lying around and I don't use it anymore so I decided to make something out of it because I didn't wanna throw it away. I started to think about I like. And I came up with cities. I'm a city girl. One of my favorite city is New York. So I cut out a part of a t-shirt and sewed it onto the purse. I also sewed some other things that I liked. As you can see, I created a peace sign hand, city life, and love. Overall, this project wasn't hard. It took a lot of time and cause a lot of pain.

For second quarter, I originally wanted to do something with photography, but since I couldn't find the USB for my camera, I decided to draw and paint my favorite characters. I wanted bright colors in each picture and this made me think of Andy Warhol paintings. So I decided to make each background a different color. I'm not finished the project yet, because I still need to finish the background of two pictures and I need to put the physical pictures together. I put the pictures I have together in the style I wanted using Pages.
I still need to finish the background for Kirby (which is going to be red) and the Cheshire Cat. I also need one final character, whose background will be purple. [Thanks to everyone who helped me think of characters to draw!]

Below are some photos that I had photo shopped. Some pictures I can't the lighting, setting while to others I added more things to the picture and added font. Each picture took me about 30-60 minutes to do for the fact that I didn't know how to use photoshop. I used it a few times just for adding text with the picture, but I was never really advanced at it. So while I did each picture I learned new things as well as completing my art project.

When I first started our quarter 2 project, I didn't know what I wanted to do nor what I wanted to accomplish. Then our teacher said that we were given the option to do whatever we please, from cooking, to writing poetry, painting, drawing, etc. When I heard this I then thought that I wanted to do something that resembled me and who I was as a person. As a person I like nature, expressing my self or opinion in words, and taking something that might look ugly or worthless and turning into something beautiful. So then I decided that I was going to write poetry and take pictures of nature and the things that I love. Over the course of the next few weeks, the poetry didn't come to me at once. I had to get inspiration sometimes while other times I would come into the class, listen to music and instantly started to write. When I write my true feelings come out and my opinion and voice is heard. Sometimes I try to put myself into other peoples shoes so that I know what they've been through because poetry is about expressing yourself while getting your point across. When I took pictures, I took pictures of things that amazed me, concerned me, or I thought was beautiful. Most pictures of are nature, my house in the snow or my friends and family. I was able to finish my project but I would have liked to take more pictures and write more poems maybe on different aspects of my life and of how I feel about certain objects and current events.

For the second marking period I didn’t know what to do until one day I was so angry that I wanted to draw how angry I was. I realize I need something to do for the art and I thought that I should draw about my feelings. The first picture is about how I wanted to go back to Africa while I was talking to my friends from Africa. The flowers next to it are one of my favor flowers from Africa. The second picture was drawled before taking a math quiz and the only way I would have remember one of the question on the quiz was by drawing it. The third picture was drawled the day I realize my block is a long block. Since I live at the end of the block and every time I walk up the block I feel like I’m walking a mile. The fourth picture was drawing the day I got my history benchmark, I felt like I was in hell because I didn’t know what to do but then when I was done with the benchmark I was so happy that I felt like I was in heaven an that’s my definition of heaven and hell. When the fifth was drawing when I went back to the middle school I used to attend and I saw some of the pictures I toke during middle schooling and I want to redraw them into one picture. The last picture was drawled the last day this project to was due because I want to sign off, that I’m done with is project. I really enjoy doing this project because I got to draw how I felt most of the time and every time I draw my feelings I feel good about it. With or without this project I will continue drawing my feelings.

Quarter Two Art Project: Painting Portraits

Ember
Ember, was the first oil portrait I ever painted. Prior to this painting, I had virtually no experience or education regarding oil paints. Through trial and error, I somewhat taught myself how to paint with oil, only asking for help once, when I was completely lost trying to clean my brushes (thank you Ms. Hull!). Though I made many mistakes, I did enjoy experimenting with a new medium.
Working with oils was a truly rewarding experience. I found that after a while, I really enjoyed painting with them. I came to love the feeling of pushing the paint across the canvas. I don't know if it was just the weight of the paint, or the brush, but it just felt so satisfying to perform each brushstroke. Whenever I painted, all my stress seemed to melt away. Of course, this state of lucidity could have also resulted from the amount of paint thinner that I exposed myself to, cleaning my brushes and all, but I like to believe otherwise...

Remove the Mask
The second painting I created was titled Remove the Mask. When brainstorming ideas for this piece, I thought of people trying to be everything that they aren't. Not wanting to come off as focusing solely on the negative, I decided to depict this by painting a woman removing a mask from her face.
While working on this portrait, I changed my mind constantly. I made her hair various colors until I mixed the right amount of sienna and yellow to get the copper-ish tone that I settled with. Shaping the face was another aspect of the painting that I was quite indecisive about. I was constantly reshaping the nose, brows, eyes, and chin until I got just the right form that I felt good with.
Though I was met with many small decision points with this painting, they were certainly important to the overall feel of the painting. I am glad that I questioned every part of my process, because if I didn't, I wouldn't feel as satisfied with this painting as I am now. If you aren't content with your work, how can you expect anyone else to be, right?

I worked on different types of poster making and typography. I got the inspiration from a talented artist on Flickr that I follow. This person creates many interesting pieces with typeface and photos that made me want to create my own.

I used things I heard around me as well as some of my favorite expressions as inspiration. It was difficult to find photos to mesh together to make what I saw in my head. When I decided on the expressions to use, I had to sit down and think about what they really meant. From there, I envisioned a scene or collection oh photos to fit into the words. All the photos I used were from Wikicommons.

The process consisted of deciding on the phrases, finding the photos and arranging the pieces. It was quite to easy to pick the phrases. After that, I had to search the internet to find pictures that suited the scene I had pictured in my head. Through this process, I had to familiarize myself with public domain as well as several Creative Commons Licenses. One I had the photos the real fun started. I twisted, turned, cropped and flipped each picture many ways. I tried out all different fonts, sizes and colors. The fonts, I chose fitting typefaces and in most pieces used color-matching for the photos and fonts.

Quarter 2 Art Project

For this marking period i decided to paint something that i loved, Japanese Characters. Specifically from anime (Japanese Cartoons). The anime i choose was Naruto. It's interesting to me how a single miss placed brushstroke or one too many could make the character mean something entirely different. The characters in the blue box stand for nin-dog (Ninja-dog) and Jashin (A type of religion). The ones in the green box stand for
四- forth or four
代-generation
目- japanese counter
火- fire
影-shadow
but when said together it reads
四代目火影 - Yon Dai Me Hoo Kage or Yondaime Hokage.
The characters in white stand for shi, which means death. The one with a black frame and red background stand for shoku meaning food. In yellow near the bottom, that symbol means flower. Lastly the one in the bottom left hand corner is an eye. That eye is the mangekyou sharingan belonging to a character in the Naruto anime.
I also did a second painting of a moon and stars. There are no sketches becuase it was something i just felt the need to draw.

Quarter Two Benchmark

I started this patch quilt during the first marking period. I have crotched the entire thing over the passed few months. I would have never been able to produce such work if it wasn’t for my great-great aunt Stella. This special woman taught me how to crochet when I was seven and I haven’t been able to put the habit down since. My piece that I am in the process of working on now is a giant patch quilt with many colors. I am crocheting rows of patches and then going to crochet them all together to form a quilt. This piece is going well because I am following my own pattern and crocheting my own way. When I say my own way I mean my style of crocheting with adjusting the tightness of the stitch and flow of the yarn. This piece isn’t quite finished yet because it takes a long time to construct such a large quilt and will need more time to finish.

These pictures were taken in this way to symbolize my great-great aunt Stella and what she had taught me. In the background you see another quilt in which she made forty years ago. I put my work over top of her quilt to show how great her skills were and how it inspired me to make a quilt of my own. My great-great aunt was very skilled with crocheting and she passed this skill down to me with her teachings and patience.

Crocheting to me is very soothing, and relaxing. My favorite thing about my work is that I can just sit down with my piece in my hands and watch television or have a conversation with someone. I can be creating a piece of artwork while relaxing and having time to myself. I see this as a major stress reliever in my life. My favorite tool to my artwork is my needle. With my needle I can create just about anything I put my mind too. My needle is my gateway to my finished product.

Finishing my product is the best part for me. My quilt isn’t finished yet but I can feel that point coming soon. The process of completion is satisfying, but not as satisfying as seeing my finished product lay out, nice and pretty. Then I can reflect on this work and think about how much hard work I had put into this piece. I look now at my rows and rows of finished patches and I think about all of the hours I had put into making these squares with neat and tight stitching. That brings me to think about my hands. My hands really wove all of this yarn into something big and useful without giving it much thought. My hands are my main tools and with them I created this giant patch quilt.

My favorite color in this quilt is the dark green. It is very appealing to my eye and engages the sense. The color has good qualities such as blending in with all of the other colors I used. It engages my senses and gives me a sense of warmth because it is a gentle color and it is on a quilt, which is warm. If I were to crotchet this entire quilt all over again, I would have made sure all of the yarn was of the same thickness or gauge. Some of the patches are thinner than others, which are fine, but in order to maybe look better, the same constancy of yarn should be used. I would have kept the tightness of the stitches the same because they are very well held together and will probably never rip apart. That is what makes a quality quilt!

Q2 Project-Gabby

In the second quarter we had a choice of what we wanted to do. At first I had a set plan of drawing something dealing with the seasons. That completely changed! I ended up drawing sketches of cartoon couples. This also changed! My next project was dealing with ducks. I only chose ducks because I had an obsession and wanted one for Christmas. Then once again it changed. My final project was two swans under neath the sunset in the water forming a heart in their necks. I colored this project in with charcoal.

In the start of the second marking period I had absolutely no clue what do for a project. All I knew what that I had to do something. One of the first classes during the quarter, while brainstorming and doing a simple painting it was suggested that that could be my art project; making one painting per art class. I do believe it was a great project because over the course of it you could see developing skills, new techniques, and doing something new everyday kept me interested. If I had not been interested the quality of the project would have been poor. But since it was entertaining and quite literally a new adventure everyday I was able to create simple paintings that I am incredibly proud of.

When it comes to art I enjoy letting my art express my feelings and personal interests. When I am drawing or building or painting I like to show who I am through my work. I try hard to make things look good. I want to show myself that I am good at what I do through my own eyes. If I think I did something well, then it doesn’t matter what someone else thinks.

When I work I usually just try to go with the flow. I try hard to fix my mistakes. When I start my work I have a general picture of what I want to make so I base all of my decisions on the original picture and manipulate it until it comes out in a way that I like. I use whatever materials I have that I feel will work to express that particular picture. My technique constantly changes each time I draw something or build something or do any kind of art. My themes are always based off of things that I like or enjoy. Like swordplay, medieval based mythology and music that I enjoy.

For this particular piece I based it off of my liking for swordplay. The idea I was making started with me sketching and then I made the structure. I am using metal and shaping it with power tools and then making a simple wood handle. I am attempting to build a sword.

Quarter 3 Projects

These drawings were quite a challenge for me. I have never had to work this quickly and keep up with a pace of work. Through these projects, I became more confident in my abilities. Though my work may not be perfect I have improved and worked harder than I ever have on these pieces. I enjoyed doing the portraits. I did a portrait on my own with now prompting. My favorite pieces were the artist focus. I love the style of Roy Lichtenstein and enjoyed researching and imitating his style. I have never worked on pieces like these so they were really enjoyable. The dots were quite the challenge because Lichtenstein's are so precise. I used a grid pattern but couldn't get it measured perfectly. Even though I wasn't perfect with my dots, I still liked how it came out. The desired effect worked. Overall my only regret throughout the process was leaving my full body portrait for the end of the quarter. I got it done, but would have liked to add more into it.

Quarter 3 Art Work

On this blog I have 1.) Hand small, 2.) Self-portrait large, 3.) Self-portrait small, 4.) Figure drawing life size, 5.) Clear bottle small, 6.) Clear bottle large 7.) Still life large, 8.) One picture drawing made from Botticelli’s artwork copied just as it is seen, 9.) One drawing made from three different pieces of Botticelli’s artwork and this piece is drawing simple because during the renaissance all pieces were draw in great detail. 10.) Small oil pastel painting I did on my own time.

Each drawing and or painting of curse took a long time to make. All of them took many steps to make and a lot of preparing to do them. The ideas of what I was doing to do was fresh in my mind, just getting it down on paper was the hard part. Drawing my hand was hard for me that was the first time I ever drew it before. When this assignment was given to me I thought it seem a little different because before now I have never thought about looking at my hand and drawing what I see. The easy part of drawing my hand was the basic outline and drawing my pinky and thumb. When I started on the other fingers it was much harder at one point I found myself forgetting what I was taught. To draw what I see not what I think I see. Then I remembered that was all I had to do so I did just that ad my hand turned out better than I thought it would.

My large self-portrait took me a really long time but I am satisfied with it to a certain extent. This was the second time I tired to draw my face. The first time I did it didn’t come out like this one and I honestly think it was because I didn’t draw my face with the correct proportion. In this one I did and I do believe using the charcoal made it come to life a little more and the detail pop out. I started in pencil because I didn’t think it would reach what it needed to if I started to draw in detail. I think the facial features had more of a chance looking like me when they were first drawn in pencil as appose to the charcoal but my finished product isn’t that bad.

The small self portrait was drawn more to the detail of my face I think because it was so small everything on the paper was right there in my face. It took me so long to get what I have I went through about five other piece of paper, I really began to get extremely frustrated and a few holes were dug into the paper but the eraser.

Life size drawing was something I really thought was going to be hard to do. When I saw that it had to be draw on brown paper I think that took my imagination a way for a bit because I like to do my drawings and painting on a while surface. Then I realized I was not getting that drawn done by focusing on the paper it was being drawn on. So then I just focused on drawing and it came out looking like Mecca. I can say that I am happy the way my finished product turned out.

The small bottle drawing was fun. When I started it, it was a bunch of shape and everything was the same shade. It took very long draw it was hard to fit everything on the bottle and have it look right. The trick was to get the shapes and the shading and it would be done but at the same time the shading was the hard part because the drawing still had to give off the appearance of a clear bottle.

The large clear drawing was also fun t draw but I really like the fact that I choose to add color to it. For some reason I felt if I would have left it in black and white the picture wouldn’t have had any essence to it. I felt just drawing another clear object in black and white would have been a little boring and it made me feel better when I finished it because it was very hard to start it off but then I got the hang of it.

The counter drawing was also hard but hardest of tem all. I tried to draw everything on the counter but it was just not working for me. So then I tried to stick with what I know and I remembered we were able to pick certain things from the counter and draw them so that it what I did. It came out better then my other fail attempts. Once again I got so frustrated that I put holes in the paper from the eraser.

Next pieces were from Botticelli’s artwork the first one was just drawn as a copy as I saw it on the paper and the other picture inspired by him was drawn a little different. Since all the pictures drawn during renaissance was detailed beyond what most people can imagine. So I took trees from one picture, sand and water from another and the wall with the door object to see if I could be inspired by an older piece to my own art piece and I succeeded.

Last but not lest was my oil pastel painting I did on my own time because my mom finally brought me them and I was extremely excited to use them. I didn’t really have an idea of what to make I Just let the brush go where it wanted to and received a finished piece.

These drawing were different to what I'm used to drawing. I know that drawing realistically gives you a good foundation if you ever take up drawing. I'm used to drawing on the spot, I never have the patience to sit there and practice. My favorite out of all of these is my small self-portrait. It was the one that turned out the best in my opinion. I really love drawing, and it's usually something that I don't spend too much time on. I bet if I practiced, I'd be really good at it. Unfortunately, I don't spend too much time on it, and have my favorite art book and my drawing tools just gathering dust. Having to do a drawing a week made me feel rushed. I liked that we had to do these but I never really had the time to finish these at home. I think we had enough time to do them all. Something I would've done is fix the mistakes while I was drawing instead of going along with them.

I would like to honestly say that I put forth a lot of effort when it came to this assignment but ran into multiple road blocks along the way. Being the type of artist I am, a semi-perfectionist, time limits is something I tend to struggle with when it comes to my art. I'll put something down and it'll scream at me for days to fix something that just doesn't look right and , the sucker I am for making an art piece that I can make it instead of letting it be, I will. This happened quite a bit with a few of my assigned art pieces. For example, my own hand I had to repeatedly go back to and alter one or two times so even the slight fingernail would stop yelling at me. This would get in the way of the next project because I'd stop, go back, fix, straighten up and wouldn't finish the next art work in time of the deadline. I'm currently still facing that problem with the still life. I've worked multiple hours on this one picture without putting a date on the full product because I know that I am capable of making it as realistic as possible so in my mind 2 hours out of a week is not going to get me to perfection. Although it is almost complete with a few shadings to do here and there this has left me behind on other assignments that no doubt will make me run into the same idealist issues. I have started the full life drawing of another classmate but with little time for her to pose or me to put down that one nagging picture I've run into some problems there. If, at best, I can post half finished work I will but definitely to my disliking. I feel like messing up is a big part of the complete product but its a process that I prefer to keep private. My viewers should receive only the best that I can offer and being true to myself and my artwork I cannot, without a guilty conscious, put up something that I didn't truly put all of my artistic ability into. It's cheating myself out as a true artist. I feel like getting in an assignment late but perfected is better than meeting the deadline with little effort. I intend to get every piece up before the next marking period with haste but definitely not carelessness.

I feel that my art is a representation of who I am and what I like. When it came to drawing my face I knew before hand that I would have problems since I never felt I was good at proportion on a face, or at drawing noses. But after talking to my father, who is an artist, I figured them out. I also had a lot of help from my friends with their, 'constructive' criticism. I had been so used to drawing in the anime form which didn't focus on the nose of mouth, and had different proportions. Then when I had to draw my hand, something that I had always struggled to draw, I had to push myself to my limits. I thank Ms. Hull for giving us things that we NEEDED to draw, or else I would have stuck to my norm and never be able to say that I at least tried. Now I am truly proud of the art work that I have posted here.

In the 3rd quarter we had to work with charcoal. With the charcoal we drew pictures of our hands, self portraits, still life, and a clear object. These projects weren't so much that hard except for the shading of them and looking at the obvious. The only thing is that my self portrait was hard to get it to look like me. The projects that I liked the best has to be the hand and the clear drawing. Where I thought that i was successful was on the hand and the shading I did on my hand. Having a drawing a week made me feel a little overwhelmed, but i pulled through. There is really nothing more that the teacher could do she showed us the most that she could. What I could have done differently was actually start on the projects a little earlier, and it was also hard because I got sick for almost two weeks and I was not in school, so I am missing a lot of work. After the first few projects of charcoal and portraits we got to choose from a list of projects to do for a menu project. I chose to look at work from a famous artist (Paul Klee) and copy two of his arts. in stead of choosing two i chose one of his arts and did a copy of it by drawing one in charcoal and the other in oil pastels to see if the colors or brightness changed the way someone would look at the art.

During this quarter, I think I had a really hard time with the portraits. The hardest part about them for me was the shading. I liked the clear bottle drawing a lot because it made you really put detail into the bottle to make it transparent and 3D at the same time. That was a bit of a challenge but overall I think that is what I did best this quarter. I think having a drawing a week made it really seem like we had a lot of pressure on us. Because of all the days we didn't have school because of snow or something, that made it really stressful. I would have rather had free studio with some assigned artwork because I think then people would have used their time more effectively.

THenry 3rd Quarter

The drawings that I had to do for the third quarter were more difficult when I had to do them on a larger scale. I am used to drawing on paper that is 8x11 or smaller. The drawings that I like best are the one of my hand and the still life. I like the drawing of my hand because I felt more in control while I was drawing it, and it was on a scale that I was used to. The still life drawing was also something that I was more familiar with. I've done still life's in other art classes, so I knew what to expect as far as perspective and scale. The things that gave me the most trouble were working with charcoal and the 24x36 drawings. Charcoal is much messier than pencil, and it is harder to erase. Even when I did get some of it erased there were marks left on the paper. The fact that it didn't erase as cleanly as pencil became frustrating. I didn't mind doing a drawing a week, especially since I did something similar during the second quarter.

I think that the reason these were so hard, was because I felt overwhelmed with work. With there being a project a week, I didn't feel that I had enough time to work on each assignment. I think that maybe I could have used more time to complete the projects. I enjoyed doing the small self portrait, because I did one a few years ago, so I was familiar with making sure I took my time with making it look correct. I also enjoyed doing the large still life, because I took my time, and tried to make sure that every part of the scene I could see was drawn on the paper. I didn't enjoy doing the full figure, because I feel that I could have used more time to enhance the physical features. I feel that if we went over how to do some of the drawings as a class, I would feel a little bit more confident in some of my art pieces. I feel that next time, I should focus, and pace myself to achieve the right finishing product I want.

Week 1 - Hand Drawing

This first assignment was one of the hardest ones. This is mostly because this is our first assignment in which we focused on "drawing what we see" and shading. We had to draw a picture of our hand exactly how we saw it. It was harder than I thought because of all of the markings on on my hand, creases, and all the shading that I never noticed. It was challenging but I think I did an exceptional job on it.

Week 2 - Self Portrait (8x11/Pencil)

For this assignment we had to hold out a mirror and draw ourselves exactly the way we saw it. I also found this assignment to be challenging. I feel like you never really know how intricate and uniquely designed your face is until you try to duplicate it. However, I feel like this is the assignment I did the poorest on. Although I tried my hardest to draw what I saw, it didn't come out the way that I expected it. But, I did the best the could within the amount of time given.

Week 3 - Self Portrait (24x36)

For this week we had to draw another self portrait but larger. This was even harder than the previous week, because not only did you need to draw everything you saw but you had to enlarge it. By doing this I realized that I'm not the best at drawing self-portraits but I would like to work on it. However, when I was finished this picture before I photographed it, someone threw it out. Fortunately Ms. Hull gave me the ok to not have the picture up.

Week 4 - Full Body

This week we had to pick a partner and draw them the best we could. This was also very hard because I not only had to focus on the details of my partners face but I also had to focus on the details of his clothes, stance, ect. This one took the most time, and I chose to do this in pencil because I discovered that's what I work best with.

Week 5 – Still Life

The still life drawing was one of the most interesting ones to draw. This is because everyone is looking at the same image but interprets it in their own way. The charcoal however is new to me and very hard to use. I hadn’t practiced how to shade or anything like that so I used it as if it were a pencil. I probably could have used this utensil better, but I have improved on it.

Week 6 – Bottle (8x11 Pencil)

The clear bottle pencil drawing was my favorite assignment of the quarter. By doing this drawing I discovered talents that I didn’t know that I had. I found out that I actually can shade, well when I use pencil. I feel like I did an exceptional job making the picture of the bottle come to life and look real/3D.

Week 7 – Bottle (26x34 Charcoal)

In this drawing I just tried to duplicate my last drawing (pencil bottle) but it was harder than I thought. I tried to do the same shading I did in the pencil drawing but it didn’t work out as well. In the end my overall drawing wasn’t as strong as it could have been.

For assignments like these I like to try to draw it however it flows out. I stay in the guidelines and erase when needed but I try to erase minimally because I enjoy the flow of artwork that you just let fall onto the page. Organized work looks good but I think true artwork should simply flow with how you are feeling as you create each piece.

These were hard because a lot of the mediums and drawing styles weren't the ones I was accustomed to. I had to adjust the way I held a pencil (or piece of charcoal for that matter) and how I approached the object/ person/ feature I was drawing. I really liked doing the hand drawings, because when I was drawing my hands, I could look very closely at them without using a mirror. Also, instead of looking up then glancing back down to draw, I could hold my hands near the paper and just glance to the side quickly. I think I was most successful in drawing my hands, because I feel like I really got the shadowing down compared to the facial pictures. Drawing for a week made me feel relaxed. I looked forward to art because I knew that all I had to do was sit down and draw exactly what I saw. I think there should have been a short lesson on human anatomy because when I was drawing the full figure, I wasn't sure if I drew things to the right proportion or if I was drawing parts of the body the right way. I think I should've paced my time more. I finished everything on time, but I did some things out of order and I believed I would've been more organized if I would've just followed the schedule online.

For my artist I chose a French street artist called Monsieur Qui. I wanted to do something a little different and out of my element, so I wanted to do something dealing with street art. As I looked through some of the most famous street artist, I noticed Monsieur Qui's work. The work I based my drawings off of are kind of like calligraphy letters with a twist. I basically took the letters in his work and changed them around to make something new. I decided to do the letters because I knew I'm not very good at lettering and I wanted to challenge myself.

Going into this quarter I have to admit that I was nervous. This was the first time that I had drawn objects that were in front of me and taking into consideration shadows. This was also my first time using charcoal and drawling larger pictures. It was a challenge trying to complete one drawling in one week for me because i was really trying to take my time and make everything perfect. It often got very stressful. But as the quarter progressed I got the hang off drawling and instead of being stressful it actually relieved the stresses that I had from other classes and I began to enjoy myself. I was surprised at some of my finished products.

I have no complaints about what the teacher should have done differently. She was there to help and let us handle drawling art in a way that was good for us. She allowed us to spread out through the hallways and listening to music. Which made the environment more relaxing making it easier to draw. As for what I could have done differently, I would definitely say that in the beginning I should have take the class more seriously so that I would have to be stressed when it came to finishing the pieces.

For the extra project I choice Cubism as my genre. Cubism is an abstract art form. In this type of art the subject is shown in many different angles by using geometric shapes. I choice this as my genre because when I looked at some pictures of Cubism it seemed as though there were a bunch of shapes, creating somewhat of a mosaic,but under was also another picture. Kind of like one picture on top of another. As you look at my pieces can you tell what the hidden object is?

So basically in quarter three, I focused on a vast variety of things. The main focuses of this quarter were shadowing, still life, and the human body. To mirror those focuses is my art work. Behind all of this though, each picture is supposed to show something about myself.

The first drawing of this quarter was just a pencil drawing of a hand. IF was the smallest picture of the year. In the picture that I drew, the hand looks like its reaching out for help. From the shading and shadows of the picture you can tell that something is hanging over the hand. The picture is symbolism, saying that there are always things that hang over our shoulders and try to hold us down but it is up to us to try to get ourselves out from under them.

The second drawing of this year was a pencil drawing of myself. For this picture what I did was take one of my favorite picture of myself and then just try to remake it with pencil. In this picture, I was wearing a hoodie and my head was tilted down. When i tried to portray the tilt in my drawing it didn't come out as well as I'd liked but the picture was still okay. Once I finished the picture in pencil I went over it and colored it in just to enhance the emotion behind the art. The picture gives off deep and somewhat sad pictures.

In the third drawing of this quarter I had to do another self portrait but this time it had to be bigger and in charcoal. This was my third favorite picture to draw this quarter. In this picture I attempted to draw myself looking off to the side again, using a picture I took of myself as my model. This picture was hard at first because it took a while to try to proportion out the drawing. At first the head was too round or the shoulders came out too far. In the end though, I was proud with the outcome of it. The picture shows a stronger, serious version of me which is a side of me people aren't used to seeing.

The fourth picture in this project was a full figure charcoal drawing of someone. I chose to draw my friend Michael Chase. I had took a picture of him a day or two before hand and so I used that picture in order to draw. This was the most annoying picture of the quarter just because I could not, no matter what i tried, get the picture perfectly the way I wanted. Lines were too far up or down and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. In the end I just gave up working on it and stuck with what it was.

The fifth drawing was a drawing of a clear bottle. Now originally I started and completed a drawing of a soap bottle. The shading and lines were beautiful. But then I took that drawing and used it for another classes assignment. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to get it back and I never took a picture of it so, instead of harping on that I just went and drew another drawing. The drawing I'm submitting as a final is a sketch of a water bottle that my mom constantly buys. It's in the shape of a baseball. At first I was going to place the bottle on a table but when I thought about it, I fiigured it would be more interesting to have it in my hand.

The sixth draw was a still life of a an area in the art studio that Ms.Hull set up for us to draw. This drawing was the most fun because I wasn't really interested in doing it but I did anyway. It turned out okay.

The seventh drawing was a charcoal drawing of a clear bottle on big paper. I enjoyed making this picture slightly just because of how I set it up. I placed the bottle in a window seal and then attempted to draw literally everything in the picture. That included the car driving by that got caught in the picture. I think this is one my my favorite pieces because of the fact that it can be taken to have a humorous yet sinister tone. When I look at it, it makes me think that an evil bottle is looking down onto a car that it's hated for years, plotting ways to bring harm to it.

To finish this off, I'm going to talk about the finale piece. For our final piece I chose a specific genre and then drew a six hour piece about it. The genre I chose was anime because it's my favorite type of art. To display it, all I did was take my school lab coat and then design on it something pertaining to anime. The reason I chose to design my lab coat is because I've always looked at clothing from stores like fye and hot topic and liked the cartoons and anime themes that are placed on them. I've always wanted to design my own. So I did.

On the lab coat I drew a girl playing the flute because that's what I love to do. And so the theme of the coat is music.
Originally she had arms and hands but it was very difficult to draw on the cloth so I ended up just not giving her them.

Jesus Jimenez Q3 - Artist Focus

For my artist focus I chose Omar Dogan. He's worked at Udon Entertainment for a long time, and he mainly focuses on realistic-cartoon type of stuff. Since Capcom (a video game software company) hires Udon for a lot of their Games' artwork the Udon crew always have something draw and that include Omar.
The reason I specifically chose Omar is for his style and colors (and because I love the art he does in some comics).

The first picture is Ibuki from the Street Fighter franchise. Omar worked on a 4 part comic book series with this character, going into details about their personal life. He did the same with two other characters from the franchise.

The second picture is a picture of my own creation, and I tried to emulate the eyes Omar does.

A lot of the things in the drawings came out weird/wrong. The Right arm came out weird because I got lazy. On the second one, the eyes are aren't parallel and looked crooked. Anyway, I enjoyed studying Omar Dogan.

The last picture is Omar's version of Ibuki.

Japanese Art

These painting I did for my Advanced Art class. The theme or era I decided to do was Japanese Art. At first I just did the one cherry blossom tree with the purple background. But then I wanted to do more. All of these painting were doodles at first then day after day it became more. The first cherry blossom tree is tranquility. The second photo is unnamed but I used paint to make the picture. I wanted to make it a pointillism affect so I used to finger and dotted on the paint. The picture was made to be trees on the outside and a river flowing in the middle. The second cherry blossom is love. And the fourth painting has my friend and I's hand print and in the middle it says "I love you". The only inspiration I had was things that I like. Flowers and painting.

Personally, I found this quarter to be very challenging. Each week we were assigned a different piece of art to complete. i found myself having to redo and learn different ways to accomplish the goal that was set before me. Most of the works that i created are the third or fifth copy of what was originally created because I was not satisfied with what I created. Only Having one week to compete each piece put me under a lot of pressure and put me behind in my work because I did not feel as though I had enough time to compete each piece. I usually found myself making up work outside of class. I feel that the classes could have been more instructed instead of students figuring everything out for themselves. Most if not all of the classes were never really instructed. We were simply allowed to go and draw. I could have managed my time better, but I truly did put in an honest effort even though I do not consider myself to be an artist and was under pressure.

Exploration of a Renaissance Artist: Focus on Benozzo Gozzoli

Trial by Fire Before Sultan description:

Behind the small crowd of people is an old stonewall corner. Each individual crack on the wall is highlighted on the seam of the wall. On the left side of the wall the cracks become smooth and less visible. On the right side the cracks are faintly visible. The darkness of the space near the right side of the wall shields the cracks. The side of the darkness lies behind the sultan.

From the bottom right hand corner to almost the top right hand corner, stretches the seated body of a man who is assumed to be a sultan. His robe is golden yellow with a vague pattern of blue trimming the bottom. Each wrinkle that accompanies sitting is visible. The robe gathers in the lap of the sultan. He wears sleeved shirt underneath the rode, but only the left arm is visible. In the center of the shirt, along the sultans chest are eleven gold buttons. On his head is a hat in the shape of a round pointed triangle. There are lines that run from the furry white rim of the hat to the gold button on top.

The sultan’s eyes are looking down upon the crowd that is implied to be before him. His lips are thin and almost covered by the thick rust colored beard that he wears. To the left of the sultan is a man covered from head to toe in a red robe. The man’s head is covered also by a hijab. Behind the man is a knight fully dressed in metal, but his head gear is not pointed. It is rounded to his head. Beyond and in between the knight and man are the heads of three more crowd members.

Death and Ascention of St. Francis description:

Under the arch of a bright rainstorm lies a town square. The sky behind the storm is light blue, almost the color of crystal water. Directly under the arch but still above the town, five angles float on a wisp like cloud. The angels almost appear as the morning sun. Under the angles is a yellow stone house. At the top is a section with three triangular windows in a row and a circular one above the middle window. Under the top section is a layer of red shingles coming out in to the crown that is gathered in the town square. To left of the house is a old, gray church-like building and to the right is a pale, red rectangular building.

A large mass of people stand gathered between the buildings. For the ones closes to the rear of the crowd only the shapes and colors of their heads are visible. In the front of the crowd are men in white robes, the y hold long wooden poles above their head. In the center of these men is another man, but he holds a book opened toward his face. One man kneels with his hands in the prayer position at the head of a dead body. Another man leans over the dead body that is raised on a high blue table. This man wears a red robe that is trimmed with white at the top. One the table lays a man that is covered from head to toe in a yellow robe. His head rests on a red pillow.

Argument:

Artists of the Renaissance were considered to be people of the future. Their art possessed certain qualities that distinguished the transition from medieval to present day art. Many artist abandoned arts connection to the church and went off in a separate direction to find the beauty of the world. However, in the majority of Benozzo Gozzoli’s work there is a clear connection to the church. Although his work was connected to the church, it still possessed the qualities of the “new” art that was introduced during this time.

One characteristic that was introduced during the Renaissance was the idea of focusing on realism. The artwork was meant to look as if it were real people and real objects. In all of Gozzoli’s pieces the people are painted as if they were and individual. The people have features unique to them, making them look more life like or real.

Artists of the Renaissance also adopted the idea of perspective. Artists made objects that were further back in space appear to be far off in the distance of the artwork. Techniques of using a vanishing point assisted artists when painting. Art was no longer 2-demensional. Figures were shown in their true form. Gozzoli demonstrates this in his painting Death and Ascention of St. Francis. He shows the 3-dimensional figures f buildings and people.

The only argument that would exclude Gozzoli from the artists of the Renaissance is his high focus on the church. Other then that he met all of the other characteristics of the Renaissance.

One of my arts was not done because it was suppose to be Callie Monros but she was out of school for about three weeks and I could not complete my art without her. I would have done so much better if I had enough time to finish. I’m every grateful for doing those arts because they make me feel like I have learn so much about art. That I can draw a picture on my own without anyone’s help.

My current work I do them because I had to do them but I really work hard on this one. Doing this project send a message that I’m really doing well at drawing, I guess is because I now understand the messages behind my arts. Art wasn’t always my thing because I thought art had no purpose and you can’t express yourself with art like how you can with words. I was wrong because I’m expressing how I feel about my own work and how seeing my own work like this, affects me. I’m looking forward to the next project.

Alex Johnson Q3 Genre Focus

I decided to study graffiti. I think graffiti was really a challenge because it's a very complex form of artwork and is often controversial. A lot of the graffiti I used to do were just sketches on paper and now I think I'm really more into the style of graffiti.

I did a lot of different things this quarter. For one, I decided to use a lot of inspiration. The main inspirations were a picture of an eye and some modern L.A graffiti. Here are my inspirations:

My first piece was my own rendition of the graphic eye. It took a lot of tedious work to get all of the lines just how I wanted them. I stuck only to a few colors because I didn't want to make my first piece overly complex.

After finishing most of the eye, I really wanted to work more on my lettering. I decided to use my Aim name and turn it into something cool. The hardest part for me was making the letters. I couldn't decide on how I wanted them to look.

I only have to finish the backdrop for this and erase any excess lines from the pencil.

For the third quarter, we had to complete various drawing that I found quite challenging. I had to teach myself how to draw these pictures and make them proportionate. I also had trouble with putting some things into perspective. My favorite part of this project was getting to pick an artist and copy their work. My inspiration was Vincent Van Gogh. He painted both of the pictures that I copied but I altered it and used charcoal. Charcoal is my favorite to work with because I can get the shadings just right. I did work very hard on all of my art pieces, I hope you like them!

In quarter 3 I had many difficulties. I had already made up my mind that I couldn't draw and everything I did would come out horrible. My full body drawing was misplaced and That was my biggest accomplishment. I think the things I learned most this quarter was how to do shading and shadowing to make the most accurate drawing. Trying to portray realism was difficult because while drawing a persons already has a sense and idea of how they think that figure and or object looks like. I kept a repetitive saying in my head that Ms.Hull said to us she said" draw what you see not what you think is there." That is the only thing that kept me going in this project. My self portrait had to be the task that I used that saying the most. I kept saying I'm pretty sure that is what I look like, but turned out the final product looked nothing like me. I then started over and drew exactly what I seen, the project came out just the way I wanted it to, just like me. This quarter has been a challenge but I learned a lot from it that is the most beneficial.

Art For Quarter 3

This quarter in Art has been a wonderful learning experience. We experimented in different areas of art, and it proved to be rewarding in so many ways. Developing skills in drawing different subjects with different mediums pushes our own concepts of art, and propels us to experiment more with the unknown.
I am especially thankful for the various projects this quarter. The pieces that I have completed can now go into my portfolio, which I will continue to build in order to achieve my dream of going to the Parson's School of Design. Developing my skills as an artist by going outside of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown have certainly helped me gain a perspective on my future art. I can't wait to see what's in store for us next quarter.
In conclusion, I am very thankful to Mrs. Hull and the projects she gave us, for they are rewarding in more ways than one. I am very proud of my progress in art this quarter, and I will continue to build upon my skills, and become a better developed artist.

3rd Quater Art Benchmark

This 3rd quarter has been very excellent with increasing my artistic experiences. I feel that I have improved greatly with my artwork and I have a greater interested in more genres of art. I tried new and different kinds of art and it has been very successful. With many of my drawings I used a fair amount of shading and creases that makes the art work look realistic. Lining and the shading falls together to make a shadow in many of my artwork that is posted below. I enjoyed this quarter and hope to do just as well for the final quarter.

I love doing anything artsy because it helps me let out emotions through familiar hobbies. One of my favorite things to do is to look at all my older art pieces and see how I've improved.

I select themes through what interests me, and then what inspires me. I get more inspiration through my interests, and have a more enjoyable time overall. Although I don't always limit myself to things I like, I also keep an open mind to new things.

I'm now trying to challenge myself upon listening to "rules" for art. I usually go about the subject listening to myself only, and doing things to please me. So recently, I have allowed the "rules of real life" to try and enter my art pieces. It has been difficult, but I've become quite proud of about one or two pieces of the pictures shown below.

Quarter 3

For this quarter I tried to adapt to drawing things that i'm not used to. I like drawing things that seem abstract since almost all my drawings look cartoon-ish. The drawing of my hand was one that didn't come out cartoon-ish, it looked pretty realistic, or at close as it can be. I found a few of these difficult since i'm not use to drawing form real life.

I choose two painting by Bob Kessel to copy. He draws cartoons but not in the typical way. Most of what her paints/draws are copies or are inspired by other artists. For both mine and Kessel's for the Marvel character's the left side is a neutral face and the right is their angry face.

I found this quarter to be more challenging than the other two quarter. Each week we were assigned a different piece of art to make. Personally, I found myself ended up redoing the same picture more than one. Either because I didn't like the way it was or it didn't turn out to be meet the requirements. Most of the photos were created on the first or second drawing. The difficult part about all of this was that each week we had to complete a project. I felt myself get overworked and stressed. Because when I came back the next week I realized I couldn't go back and finish the other project but start of the new one for the new week. A goal I have set is managing my time better. All we were instructed to do was go and draw, and that's what I did. I tried to draw what I see and how I feel the object could be interpreted. Overall this quarter was fun because we had the opportunity to do different types of art and using multiple instruments and materials.

This project was to find a 'How To' online and follow the directions. For mine I recreated Flowers made out of Tissue paper and chenille sticks. When reading the instructions I learned how to make an accordion fold and what happens when you mix different color papers.

This was an interesting and frustrating quarter for me. We had to make a how-to sculpture, and draw something repeatedly, which didn't turn out as well I wanted it to be. We had to find a how-to sculpture and make it. I decided to make a jet out of k'nex pieces after seeing a how to on the internet. I liked this the most out of the things we did for the last quarter. We also had to take a lot of pictures and then edit them using some form of picture editor like and app or photoshop. We were required to replicate a famous piece of art. The easy part was sketching, I felt confident that everything was somewhat accurate. When It came time to add details, I started to realize that color pencil may not have been the best choice. I chose to draw the Scream. Drawing a bike is something that I have never tried to do before in an art class. The line drawing seemed simple enough, but a lot of detail was needed for a final product that looked good. The smaller drawings I did were okay, but when I had to do it on a larger scale it came out horrible. I tried drawing it over several times, but just decided to finish because it didn't get much better. Drawing in negative space is something that I've never done at all, which may have been why I had trouble drawing the bike in negative space.

Quarter 4 - Art Portfolio

This quarter we had specific expectations and drawings that were needed. We had to create a sculpture out of any materials, take up to 200 photos but edit at least 3, interpret/recreate a famous artist's creation, draw from outside, and draw a bike using line drawing, negative space, and shadow.

The points that I found difficult for me were the bikes, because I didn't really know how to use shadow space and negative space. The idea was to capture the right amount of lighting and taking in exactly what you see and not what you want to see.

Overall art as been an amazing experience. Learning new techniques, different ways to do things, and also creating objects from recycled materials. I could use all these techniques for future projects in case in college I decide to major or minor in art.

My Interpretation - It's the same but flipeed. Instead of using brushes, I use my pointer finger and painted dots.

My sculpture I decided to make out of clay. The first sculpture is a heart with a peace sign in it. The second one is a flower.

The next pictures are the ones of bikes. I was only able to complete to due to lack of time. But the lines I do have are the line drawing of the bike and negative space.

Quarter 4 Projects

By far, I liked working with the sculpture this quarter. It showed me that I can make something with my hands that surprised and impressed people. Everyone thought it was glass when they looked at it the first time, when it was actually was melted plastic. When I started it I didn't know how it would go, but that's why I enjoyed it because of its unpredictability.

Next, I took photos of the rose sculpture that I did. I was able to use a better camera and that really enhanced them. After that I edited them using photoshop and iPhoto. I thought they came out really cool.

The bikes were particularly hard. The line drawing came out well and I was happy with the details I included. The negative space was cool to do because I have never done anything like it before. I didn't get to the shading drawing for lack of time.

I was able to finish my collection of pieces imitating Roy Lichtenstein. This one was much better, I was neater with the grid and the dots came out a lot better.

Artists Statement:

I think that this marking period was fun and challenging as far as the work we were assigned. The first two projects, which were the sculpture and the pictures, were the most fun and easy for me. For the sculpture I made beads out of paper and threaded them to make a necklace. I was inspired to do this by a project that I did in BuildOn were we made the same beads. I think its a good project because it is eco friendly, you are reusing the paper. The pictures that I used where taken when I was in the Dominican Republic. I think that the originals were cool but the editing added a different touch to them. The bicycle drawings were the hardest for me. They werent as free form as the others. At first I never thought I would be able to complete the bicycles because they seemed very taunting. I am proud that I was able to draw them and hope I continue to improve on my still life drawings.

The first 5 pictures : DIY Project ; Stenciling

The first picture is a stencil from a stencil website that I then printed out and cut out the black of the picture. I gathered my materials which were 50% bleach/ 50% water solution, an old black shirt, cardboard (I could've used paper as the stencil but cardboard would ensure that the bleach didn't soak through) I placed the stencil on the shirt and sprayed the bleach around it a little bit at a time. I repeated this process once more on a polo shirt instead (thicker fabric). I actually enjoyed the crispness of the first try.

These are my favorite because they are simple there isn't much going on and the way I edited the pictures were only slight color, contrast, or saturation alterations.

Missing - Bicycles

For this assignment, I had been absent due to a stay away science fair when we had begun working on it. Reviewing and studying others pieces I do believe I have gotten the concept of the assignment and the way one must view an object in not only different perspectives but also its different spaces. I cannot say that I've first hand great experience with these techniques but considering myself an artist I want to set this as one of the goals for myself, at least to try.

Next 1 : Outside

I chose to keep my outside piece very simple and almost sketch-like but I paid attention to "sloppy" detail without thinking to much into it I added shades where my eyes told me I seen shades. I really wanted to stray away from a piece that would like semi-realistic or artistic to tacky by adding unnecessary bricks, which in my mind would appear more like squares. When relating to an outside piece the way you portray that artwork is also a representation of the way your mind as an artist processes the environment around you. For example, usually in fast pace environments the artist will show that fast pace with the quickness in strokes or how much space is being used on the canvas. Blank negative space, in this case, was the best choice in my opinion for this specific work. I was sitting in a simple calm park and with not much clouding my thoughts or view I didn't believe that there should be much clouding or lingering around the main focus, the tree.

Try different spaces/perspectives with negative/positive
Try different styles of simple and complex drawing/painting
Do more painting projects ( I never realized that I had potential in this field until this year :')
Do more arts and crafts ( This was also fun and creative )

    This quarter unlike any other was small so I really had to try and find my imagination so I would make everything but still be content with my end result.
    The first thing was the bird house which too a really long time. It was all worth is because I was and am happy with what it looks like now. The paint was the hardest part, it took about three hours to paint. I did learn that I like oil paint one copper. It looks nice and I actually use real oil along with the paint, it helps it smooth out and the brush move better. The only problem is it takes about one week or a little more to dry.
    The pictures I did i only chose three to edit and and extra two to up load. For some reason I didn't really like any of the pictures I took. When I was using photoshop I was in a way playing with the idea of making the next picture different as if the idea came from another person to make it that way. But to still have it clear that is the same picture. The rose happens to be my favorite because I love a good black and white picture. It's something about it that keeps me content. It's sort of like the second picture it looks simple but it's not. I tried to play around with the texture of the picture and bring out the clouds and at the same time keep some of the focus on the rainbow. The third picture is of my little cousin at her birthday party. she was sitting quite so I thought it would make for a perfect picture. Right after I took it I had the idea of making it look like she kind of sitting in the mist of smoke or something. Thinking of some sort of fairy tale look. I finally choose to keep it with the while and smudging out the background some to blind in. The picture under it with the straw throughout the Capri Sun was something one of my older cousins did. In a rush because she was very thirsty, after she attempted to put the straw in the drink she was confused as to why she was unable to drink anything. In that moment I could not stop laughing and thought it would be perfect to capture. The last picture I took was of my little sister playing pee-a-boo with me and I thought it was so cute. When ever I play games with my little sister she makes the cutest little farces and I always want to take a picture. This time she kept coving her face when she saw me try to take it, but i actually like this picture better than the one I was trying to take.
    The artist work I choose to copy was Alexander Calder I liked his art because it was something I was not use to trying to do. I like the simplicity of the art. The only problem I had was looking at the colors. I see some of my colors way off or slightly off. When I first looked a the snake on the right it was dark blue but now that I compare it to Alexander's piece it looks more green. But I still am happy with the way I did it. Even though the art might have seemed smile when I first started drawing and coloring it, it became harder to do as I got closer to finishing.
    The bikes were hard for me, it was the first time I ever tried to draw a bike. I've never thought about it before. I liked the different types of ways we had to draw it, it was in a sense looking at it from a different perspective. Only drawing lines, only drawing negative space and and drawing everything but the bike. All the picture look different as they should. Even thought in all three picture I was drawing the bike it was way different aspects and shapes that needed to be drawn to complete the picture.
    The last thing that I needed to draw was an observation form outside. I pick this observation because when I first saw it I tried to imagine it on paper. It was hard for me to do it but I just tried my best to remember what Ms. Hull always says, draw what you see, not what you think you see. Therefor I have my master piece.

For this quarter we had to do things. We had to
- Take 200 photos and edit the ones you wants you want

Just like last quarter and the ones before, I listened to music to concentrate on doing my work. Unlike the last, I decided to do something that I wasn't used to. I put my pictures up earlier. Usually wait until everything is done and then do. Seeing as that didn't go so well the last time, I tried something different. I decided to changed mostly because of that and because my sister and thrown away my original sculptures. I had made a dress with a bag and roses. Thinking that i had already taken pictures she threw them away. Instead of deciding of using that as an excuse for not doing my work. I choose make one about something else. So I made one of the T.A.R.D.I.S. It stands for Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space. It is from a BBC show called Doctor Who used by a man and his current companion to travel through time and space. For the 200 photos, I took my camera with me everywhere. I took pictures of anything and everything, sometimes even hiding a little ironman figure into the scenery. Sadly none of those were good enough to show. But some that were were of my gecko, Speedy, an etching i found at Penn's Landing and one of Center City. My outside photo was of a moving train. I was actually surprised that it came out so clear. The edited photo is of my nephew at Penn's Landing. I edited it so that Keanu Reeves was in it. The painting from my famous artist is from Bob Kessel. It is his version of Tokyo Girl Utamaro. .

In the 4th quarter we had a list of things to do in a certain amount of time.
-Take 200 photos, then edit 3 of them.
-Draw a bike three times;line negative and shading.
-Copy a famous piece of art.
-Create a sculpture
In this quarter i got off to a rough start i did not feel like doing anything. That made me get caught behind. The day i decided to do everything had me over whelmed. I started to work on everything then I realized that time was running out. This was not one of my best quarters. My favorite project was the sculpture and the photo editing. I had fun doing everything else as well but the most appealing to me was those two.

The art project's for this quarter weren't as bad as the previous ones. I feel that I was a little bit more engaged in these pieces of art. I took my time, and made sure that each one was completed and looked the way I wanted them to. However, I feel that there were a few art pieces that I wish I would have spent more time on. I enjoyed doing the sculpture, because I took my time to make these flowers look like actual flowers, and I was learning a new skill while doing so. I enjoyed copying a piece of art by an artist, because I think I really impressed myself with how diligent I was with making my drawing look like the original drawing. I wasn't really fond of doing the bike drawings, because there were many parts of the bike, that should be included in the drawing, but were difficult to draw. If I was to improve on anything this quarter, I would perfect my pieces of art. Sometimes I feel that what I consider "complete", may not exactly be completed.

This quarter I feel that there was a little more choice and freedom. We got to choose the sculpture that we wanted to create and we also got to choose the art piece we wanted to copy. We also got to take pictures of anything that we found interesting. I think this was a nice way to end out the year.

For my sculpture I found approximately five different how to on wallets. I created three different types of wallets, varying from easy to hard. From the 200 photos I choice one found of clouds, one photo of lockers, and one photo of the disney castle that I took the week of spring break. I used photoshop to add and change several things on each of the photos. My choice for the copied piece of art work was White Flower on Red Earth by Georgia O'keeffe. I didn't not color the flower but I added some shading to make it look like it was in black and white. For m final pieces of art work this year I drew a bike three times. One with negative space, one with just lines, and one with just shading. Unfortunately I was unable to complete the outside drawing. See below for the completed pieces.

Quarter 4 - Benchmark

Week 1 - Sculptures

I looked up how to make a marine biome. In order to do this I just had to look up different animals and other objects that were found in the biome. Although you can't see it very well, the hardest part was gluing the sand to the shoebox and making it appear rippled like waves.

Week 2 - Photoshopped Pictures

The first picture was a picture that I tried to photoshop. It didn't come out very well and I spent too much time just trying to perfectly cut myself out. The second photo I used flickr instead of photoshop. I find flickr easier to use, and easier for me to color contrast.

Week 3 - Copy a famous Artist

This was a picture that I found online. The different textures of the picture is was really intrigued me into trying to remake it. However one problem i had was trying to find the correct materials to try and remake the photo. In the end I couldn't find what to use, so I just used chalk pastels, but It didn't come out correctly.

My bike drawings was the hardest part. I had a hard time trying to draw the bike and an even harder time drying to make them fit the requirements. I think my best bike drawing was the one where I used shading. This is mostly because that is one of my strongest skills, so that is the one I'm best at.

Week 5 - Outside Drawing

This is the picture that I am most proud of this quarter. We had to draw a scene from outside and on that week I was sick, so I just googled a picture. It was a picture of a tree in the sunset. I used oil pastels and created a really nice blend of several different colors. This is my favorite piece of the year. :)

For the sculpture portion of the assignments this quarter I chose to do origami. I have always thought that origami was interesting. I also saw it as an extreme challenge. In the end I only made three sculptures, but individually they took about 3 hours each to be made the correct way. The finished product is one crane and lotus.

I found this assignment to be the most fun and interesting of all of our assignments. The project allowed a lot of freedom and creativity among the different pictures. The majority of my pictures were of either something inside the school or the out doors or just something I thought was interesting.

I found to be the most difficult because I was not as well versed on photoshop or any of the photo editing options online. I spent hours trying to edit the three picture that I did get a chance to finish and I am not very satisfied with them. The three edited pictures are my best attempt thus far in my photo editing.

Copy a Work by A Famous Artist:

I choose to copy the painting "My Cup Runneth Over a Hanging Wall" by Annie Lee because I saw this painting in an online photo gallery that I was scanning through one day. Something about this image seemed so calm and peaceful. I first tried to copy it in paint, but that did not work out so well. I then sketched the piece in pencil and traced over the drawing in black marker.

I found the bike drawings to be quite interesting. I also found them to be difficult. my biggest difficulty was distinguishing between negative and positive space. In the end I put a lot of time and effort into these drawings. In some of them my confusion is clear.

My drawing of an outside observation is one of a set of tree leaves. I love the outdoors and this assignment was one of my favorites of this year. I feel like it was the one I demonstrates my art ability. This piece is probably one of my best.

This quarter I really enjoyed the fact that we got to work with different mediums beside just charcoal and paper. I felt a bit challenged because my artistic skills were challenged in more than one way, but if I wasn't good with one thing, I could be good at something else.
Sculpture: For my sculpture I made a nightlight. It's made out of a sewing hem, sewing blueprints, paper and foam letters. It was fun to make and I felt like I could get really creative with it. I specifically chose to make a nightlight because I had found a design on a website that looked really awesome and I remembered always having one as a child.
Pictures: I've always liked photography and I used to carry a camera with me everywhere I went. I really love taking pictures of architecture and flowers. I found that photoshopping pictures can be difficult. I wish I could've designed more complex edits, but I did what I could and combined different effects.
Artist Copy: I copied a piece by Alexander Calder using paint. His works specially caught my eye because they were very modern and geometric.
Bike Drawings: I have never drawn a bike before and I was constantly stressing about whether or not the mechanics of the bike looked right, but I kept going. To me, the hardest part of drawing the bike was putting in the spokes, they never looked right when I put them in, but I believe in the end they turned out fine.
Outside Drawing: This is a drawing of a tree outside. Since drawing every single leaf on the tree can be frustrating and way too time consuming, I drew the tree as if it had a bush of leaves, then extended the branches into each other and off the page. To me, it looks like it symbolizes the way a tree changes during the seasons.

Art for the last quarter was very enjoyable for me. I feel like we had ample time to complete all assignments and we had a lot of freedom with it. My favorite assignment was the photoshop assignment. I never used photoshop or a professional camera. I discovered that I liked photography and I've been taking pictures from an artistic view ever since. The projects were very diverse this quarter. The first assignment was choosing to construct a model of our choosing, and I chose to crochet four coasters. Yarn is one of my favorite tools to work with, I find it very relaxing and it is a reminder to my childhood with my great-great aunt. The next assignment was to copy a piece of art by a famous artist. I chose Mr. Ou-Yang's Koy fish pond painting. Instead of painting it, I used charcoal because charcoal is my favorite drawing tool to work with.
I didn't enjoy drawing three bikes from negative space, shading, and line drawings. I personally just didn't like drawing bikes, I found it boring. The final project was to draw from a perspective outside. I went out in my backyard and took a picture of a wooden crate, my watering can, and flowerpot. I used green, pink and black charcoal to illustrate the scene. I am very proud of all of my artwork I completed this quarter because I know I put forth my best effort.

I didn't like is project that much because I feel as though we did not have enough time to complete each parts. We were given a week to complete each parts which is not enough time if you are trying to do it right. There are two of my arts that I did really well on, I guess is because I spend more time's doing them than I did for any other ones. If I were given more time, my project would have been even better. I did worked hard on each one of my arts, and I worked best to my ability.I would have done so much better if I had enough time to finish. I’m every grateful for doing those arts because they make me feel like I have learn so much about art. That I can draw a picture on my own without anyone’s help. Doing this project send a message that I’m really doing well at drawing, I guess is because I now understand the messages behind my arts. Art wasn’t always my thing because I thought art had no purpose and you can’t express yourself with art like how you can with words. I was wrong because I’m expressing how I feel about my own work and how seeing my own work like this, affects me. I’m looking forward to the next year.

This quarter we were assigned numerous assignments,
- Take 200 photos and edit them using a computerized program
- Create a sculpture
- Redraw a piece by a famous artwork
- Draw the bike placed in the classroom and redraw it three times.
The project I found to be the most interesting was the editing pictures that we took. i thought this was very difficult because I had to reiterate the skills I learned last year and research on my own in order learn the program. I have a few examples on the same pictures edited in different textures, and contrast

We also had to created a sculpture, I made mines out of cotton, ribbon, and old curtains. My sculpture was sew together as child holding a banquet of flowers. This was a great project for me to do because my aunt helped me with the cutting and sewing I learned a lot of techniques and shortcuts in order to still have enough time to do the project and have a finishing product I could be proud of. I think the skills learned with this project will be utilized later on in my life for multiple things.

The most challenging project was drawing the bike still life. I think it was challenging because drawing isn't my strong paint and details was a necessity in order to portray what I was drawing. I lost my pictures but I did my negative drawing in yellow, I used the technique of coloring the entire paper then sketch bike with a pencil then using an eraser to create the lines that weren't negative. I found that to be the most difficult. But Mabintu and I worked on our projects very hard and researched in order to complete the task because we did a lot of it independently.

I also did pointillism for my artwork I recreated, I did not pick a specific artist but I picked a genre which I feel as though shaped the way texture using paint and art was looked at. Using this technique it creates many different sizes, color combinations, and texture on paper making the art pop out more and have more character. It tells a story that only the observer knows once it is looked at. For that I appreciate the art technique. I decided to use the colors that represent the elements of life and put them all together to show that regardless of how opposite they are all four of them is needed to create a balance and understanding of life. This year has been a privilege I was able to express my art and love of poetry and gain an abundance of skills in illustration part of art. I gained the perspective of knowing art just isn't limited to one thing.

In our final quarter of art we were given assignments that would help us prepare for a future in art. Our assignments were basic things that are often expected to be in art portfolios. Our assignments were to edit photos, make a sculpture/craft, draw a bike with three different techniques, and copy a piece of art from a famous artist. For me, this quarter's work was especially challenging because of how much structure was involved. Personally, I'm used to a much less structured art class where we are allowed to create almost anything we like but even though this work was not my forte, it was still very interesting and educational.

I got the idea from my brother who had recently made his own book. He took me through the steps. We used cardboard, blank paper, string, fancy ribbon, scissors, a needle, and green and black paint.
