1. The thing that surprised me most about the data, was even though year by year, immigration, jumped and dove, the population of the U.S. kept going up and up at a constant rate. The most obvious thing about the data set, is that during the depression the immigration numbers dropped.


2. During the next two decades I believe the immigration number's will rise. It will rise because all over the world, there are governments falling apart left and right across the middle east. This will cause many people to flee their country and come to the place everyone thinks of as oppurtunity even though there may not be much oppurtunity, and that is the U.S.


3. We decided to make multiple graphs of the U.S. population for the decade with the amount of immigrants that came that year because we wanted to the immigration-U.S. citizen ratio. We figured that a double bar graph would best show the ratio

 

 4. The parts that were challenging was trying to decide which way to represent our data to show the data, because none of them seemed to have everything we wanted in our presentation.



5. If I had the opportunity to do this project again, I would have more types of graphs and pie charts to represent the immigrant-citizen ratio, because it would give multiple perspectives.

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
What shocked me the most was how steeply the immigration population in America dropped. Then again, considering what's happened throughout this country's history, it shouldn't come as a surprise.
  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I expect the immigration population to eventually even out, as in no increases with the occasional decrease. I expect this because if the population keeps increasing, America will eventually become overpopulated. They'll have to destroy more forests to build more houses in order to houses. In order to avoid that problem, America may have to put a cap on how many immigrants are allowed in America at one time, not just how many are allowed to come per year. 
  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
Our group decided to use a Lucid Chart since that's what they're most familiar with. We started with a simple timeline, but thought it was too plain, so that's how we decided to use the colorful circle spiral.
  • What parts of group work were challenging?
There weren't many challenging parts about the project, but the annoying parts were trying to decide what to do after deciding the timeline was too boring, and dealing with the actual building of the circle spiral. Trying to build the circle was a true pain.
  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
I would like to use different presentation tools. My group hopped right onto Lucid Chart, so I feel like I missed out on some interesting ways to present our data.

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection

  • ​The fact that there were so many non-European immigrants at this time surprised me. This is because I expected the only non-European "immigrants" to be slaves. However, I was not surprised that the number of immigrants decreased when there was a depression. I wouldn't expect people of foreign lands to travel to America during such a sad time.
  • For the next two decades, I expect that the immigration trend will plummet once more. This is because America is currently going through a rough time. This results in the condition of America being less that ideal for an immigrant.
  • I decided that something out of the ordinary would be the best way to present the information. I originally wanted to make a map of a theme park with checkpoints along the way. However, as time progressed and errors occurred, this became more extensive than I had originally envisioned.
  • I had trouble with collaborating with my group simply because my laptop is in the shop getting fixed. So, this made it necessary for me to share a computer with a group member in class, making the amount of individual working time in class to complete the project increase.
  • If I had to do this project over, I would have done more work on the project at home. This would have allowed the amount of time that I needed to use another group member's computer to minimize.

Something that surprised me most about this information is how different events during the corse of the time periods had affect the change in the immigration rate. Also, how the population growth had change. It seems as though what ever happened in America at the time that immigrations were coming, if something happened in America, the rate would drop. I realize that the obvious thing to the immigration rate problem was that every time something happened in America, it affected the rate.

The US presently is going through an economica problem. I wouldn't think that majority of immigrants would come to the US. It would be a increase from that last trend in the graph. It wouldn't. I do believe that the trend will increase dramatically over the next two decades because America might develope into a more powerful country than it ever was with technology and money. People would want to come here because of things like that. 

We came up with the decision for a board game because it would be something people would want to look at and catch their eye. Also, we represented the amount of immigration rate each year with an object to co-assign with the board game. It give the dates on each space and what happened through the corse of those dates. It was challenging to represent each date because we couldn't figure out how to represent the object we use for the numbers. We than decided to graph the object. It turned out to be successful in the end. 

The part of the work that was challenging was representing each dates because it was difficult to represent the numbers for the dates. Some of the problems we came was how to visualize the project.

What we would have done differently is try and make the numbers different on the project. Make it more clear than it is so people can understand it more. Over all I like the project.

    I find it quite surprising that some decades couldn't be explained, especially those with a super low or high immigration rate.
  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades. 
    For the next two decades I feel as though immigration rates would be at an all time low, the current condition of the U.S is not in a fair condition.

Immigration Visualization Reflection:

 

After doing some research, it was interesting realizing how much of a struggle immigration seemed to be within society. Each decade consisted of different reasons to why there was either an increase or decrease in the amount of immigrants traveling over to America. I already knew that the United States was involved with several wars, so this crisis would have a significant impact on immigration. Today, the United States is facing a huge economic crisis leaving a large percentage of citizens unemployed, so if the graph would continue for the next two decades the quantity of immigration would slightly decrease. I say this because although there are some problems occurring, our country has a lot to offer regarding education and domestic necessities. We usually are able to rebuild the society as a whole, making the life style of citizens peaceful.

My group and I decided that it’s imperative to incorporate pictures for each decade. This would make it easier to portray the events going on during that specific period of time. Also, we created graphs to help analyze the amount of immigrants towards the total population. We thought all of these things would be best effective for describing the relationship between immigration and population. I feel as though the part that was challenging for my group was figuring out what presentation tool we were going to use, as well as making a graph for each individual decade. In addition, it was difficult putting each piece of the project together making an organized and efficient presentation. If I had to do this project all over again, I would do a few things differently. These include: making the Lucid chart bigger so it’s clearer to see the pictures and graphs, and manage our time better. It took a long amount of time coming to the conclusion on what application to use, having a decrease in the amount of time to actually work and research the information.

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
    Many things that I was surprised about was the act that were established through the few decades I researched. I was surprised to see that someone were very discriminating. Some small things seemed to have quite an affect on America in that time. I also found a few things that I wasn't very surprised to see such as the Spanish, American War, Immigration Act of 1917 and 1918, and The Great Depression. 
  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
    I think that it will rise. America isn't the only country that is facing economic issues but on the other hand I think that it could possibly decrease eventually. Within the next two decades I believe immigration into America will continue to increase. 
  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
    Within my group we decided that the most straightforward place to represent our information would be a lucid chart. We thought that this would help us organize our thoughts and create a clean visualization. Originally we were going to show the volume of immigration by changing the sizes of the boxes. Then we agreed to use color instead. We thought it would be softer on the eyes and not so harsh. 
  • What parts of group work were challenging?
    The most changeling part was organizing all our thoughts and finding a way to represent those thoughts and research. We wanted to create something that would be interesting and people would want to look at while also incorporating all the details. 
  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
    I would definitely find a different way to represent the information because this was something that I have only done a few times before so I would like to see how else I would be able to interpet this information. Also, I'd like to see what other tools are available for these kinds assignments.

    2001-2010 it wouldnt go up alot because of the immigration problem bush was having and then 2011-2020 wouldnt go up as much because of the money issues we were having

    well we made our frist decision after much discussion. alot of things had to be compromised since then due to technical difficulty.  

  • What parts of group work were challenging?
    communication which im horrible it was hard to get things done because i didn't communicate what i needed to the rest of the group. i need to ask better questions to the group and be a better team member

  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
    i would do more i would try harder to learn how to properly use the technology available to me and spend more time at home on this then i did or comunicate want i needed done so my group could help me

Immigration Visualization Project Reflection Maggie Long

What surprised me the most is that the numbers of immigrants went up by a lot in the last years of our time period. What I thought was obvious was that the government gave some immigrants permission to be here, then just took it back. All of the undocumented workers have to go back to where they came from. 
I predict that the immigration numbers will go up because so far, it is increasing by alot in the newer years. We chose to represent the data in order of years and in color coded order. The darkest colors are the highest number of immigrants in that year. We have a key that helps you understand the colors and we have arrows showing you which way to go. 
Some parts of the project were hard with groups because if they didnt have their data on the google doc, then I wouldnt be able to start the chart. My group was pretty good though as far as work and collaboration. We all worked together and made a great looking chart with all of our factual information. 
I would maybe make a different chart for the next time. Ours was'nt very creative, and it could be more visually astounding then it is now, but this was a great way of representing our information.

+ What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

The thing that surprised me the most were the restrictions that were placed on immigration and how certain races/ethnicities were favored more than others. Only a certain number of people from different countries and continents were allowed to immigrate to the US during a certain period of time. One thing that was quite obvious throughout this research was the role that different crises in Europe played in the number of immigrants who moved to the United States. Another thing that was quite obvious for me was the struggles that new immigrants, especially those of Asian and African descent, faced. I always knew that immigrants were discriminated against because of their status in society.


+ Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

For the next two decades, I think that the immigration trent is going to drop slightly from its current rate because of the financial crisis that the US is facing. Unemployment is very high and not even natural born Americans can get a decent job much less new immigrants coming into the country. I don't think that were a going to see the sharp drop that we saw during the Great Depression but it is going to be a substantial drop. Maybe as economic conditions improve, more immigrants will want to come to the US.


+ Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.

My group decided to find pictures that easily portrayed the events that happened in each decade. We felt that people could achieve the same level of understanding by looking a picture than reading a paragraph. We also made bar graph for each decade to compare the overall US population for that decade and the number of immigrants who entered the country.


+ What parts of group work were challenging?

Overall, the group work was pretty easy because everyone in my group had a particular responsibility and they completed their part of the project on time. The most challenging part was finding the right program to represent our information. In the end we chose Lucidchart. We worked well as a group.   


+ What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

I think that I would have made the Lucidchart a bigger so that the pictures and all the writing were easier to read. The information was a little bit jumbled. Also, from seeing the projects of other groups, maybe we should have chosen a better presentation tool to represent our information.
