What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

Before the project started, I knew a lot of people immigrated to the US but when I actually saw the numbers, I was very surprised. I never realized exactly how many people came to the US and all the different places they came from. Another thing I was unaware of is how Congress used to restrict the number of immigrants from certain places and how they forced different  laws upon them once they arrived, depending on their origin. Other bits of information didn't strike me quite as much like what had caused some of the low points in immigration. It makes a lot of sense that no one would want to come to the US during the Great Depression.

Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

There are many different ways to predict the rise or fall of immigration through the next twenty years. If history were to repeat itself then one could assume that the rates would continue to rise, but some things are going on in our country that may negatively affect the amount of immigration. Right now, the United States is in a recession and if it were to worsen then I would predict a significant drop in immigration rates. On the same spectrum, many countries in Europe are in a similar situation and if we held our ground, that might encourage immigration. There are many different ways that immigration could go and it is certainly difficult to predict how it will go.

Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.

We chose to do a color coded timeline because we felt it was a good balance between information and vibrance. It is very organized and easily understood.

What parts of group work were challenging?

Overall, the group worked well together though one thing that could have been improved was the division of work. Though we all provided and filled in our own information, when it came to color coding it was difficult to separate it equally. We tried to divide it but it just became complicated.

What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

Honestly, I am very pleased with the outcome of the project. The only reason I would change anything is if we had more and more technical skill. Even though I am very pleased with our current project.

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
Among the things that surprised me the most were the dramatic decreases that the data showed in certain decades of US History. However, once I considered the decades with the decreases and the different events happening in America at the time, they made perfect sense.

Also, one thing that really intrigued me was how the overall American population had a nearly linear, steady increase, where as the immigration arrivals often changed.

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I believe that the immigration trend in the US will suffer a slight decrease, due to the dissolution of the American economy. I believe that these problems in the federal government will not attract people from foreign countries to inhabit the US.

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
We decided to place emphasis on the push/pull factors that encouraged immigration.  We decided that each decade had multiple perspectives, and so we wanted to display that in our visual piece.

  • What parts of group work were challenging?
I think everyone in the group had a massive amount of ideas, and it was very hard to compress those ideas into a singular image.

  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
If we had more time, I would include photos in the decades as well. I feel that this would have really solidified the multiple perspectives that we were trying to convey.

The information that was the most surprising to me were the numbers. I know there is a large amount of immigrants in this country but seeing it broken down into the different decades was shocking. Seeing that 1,700,000 migrated to America in ten years was astonishing to me to think about that many people getting up and moving form different countries to this one.  I knew there were certain points in history were immigration would be very low, such as times like the Great Depression and the AMerican Civil War. I make sense for people to not want to move to a country that is in bad conditions, the reason for people wanting to leave there country is most likely because it is not in the best state. Many people wouldn't move across the world to be in another bad situation, many immigrants want the American dream, freedom, peace.

America is not in the best situation, the economy is not great,  unemployment rate is high, I would predict that in this decade 2011-2020 immigration would not be very high. Although in other countries like Haiti, Japan have had recent tragedies so I think that would make immigration numbers rise but it will not be a crazy high amount of people. 2021-2030 I think the immigration numbers will start to rise to higher numbers, I do think that America will get better and the economy will start back up and the unemployment rate will decrease. I think things get better in time and from now to 2021 we have a little bit of time.

My group wanted a way to show the change in a way that people will easily tell this year it increased and this year it decreased. The circle was the shape we picked because it just seemed to show the difference in size the best. We also chose different colors for each decade (circle) to add a little life to the project and also to show that they were different decades.

Working with the group I had was pretty smooth, we all did he work and put effort into the project. Although it was challenging to come up with an idea we all like. We all had our own ideas and ways to go about this project and we had to pick one. We did come up with the project we did and are happy with it.

If I got to do this project over I would defiantly think about using one of the presentation tools, like prezi or wordle. I saw a few of them done and they are really cool, I would like to try something completely different next time!

  • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
As I was completing the historic explanation for each year I expected that the reason for each dip was simply a law that was past or a war. That was the case for some time periods. Some of the laws we found only affected one group of immigrants, for example the Immigration Act of China. When I think of immigration, I feel like it is often linked to people from places such as Mexico and Africa, so reading about how immigration from places like China was affected was different for me.I guess it was surprising because I haven't really considered immigration laws from China.

  • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I think that the immigration rate would decrease a little bit because new laws would become more strict on the requirements for coming to America. Based on the fact that terrorism is such a big concern I dont think anyone is going to allow a whole lot of immigrants to come to America.

  • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
At first we knew for sure that we wanted to use picture to represent each decade. However when we went through the list of tools given to use we had a hard time finding something that could help us use our pictures to create something kind of like a timeline. We got the idea of using the picture as boxes connecting from Ms. Launfenberg.
  • What parts of group work were challenging?
I think specifically with this project it was hard for me to let others do all the work. At one point I kept asking if there was anything that I could do but a great majority of it was covered.Which is different for me because usually i am the one taking on the major parts and compiling everything together.
  • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
When we started the project I had one set idea but as the project progressed and was completed I came up with some ideas of how we could have put the pictures together differently. Now That I think about it we could have used the pictures we collected to make some kind of collage.

    • What surprised you most about this information? The things that surprised me the most was the time period, the major events that took place during those years. I would never thought America went through.  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set? The words was really short, They couldn't really fit. When there were major ups or downs in the immigration is was usually do to things we learned in school. What was surprising was some of the reasons for slight changes. The immigrations were over thousands of people, they all came to the United State base on the fact that they needed a new life and American Needed them for workers.

    • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades. I think more Immigrants are going to come, however it wouldn't be as much as the past decades, because American is going though hard times now and they wouldn't have a better life here.

    • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.  After viewing multiple choices our group found  prezi the most interesting and simple to combine our information.

    • What parts of group work were challenging? Some people wouldn't get their part done on time and they couldn't put it together because we was missing parts.

    • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over? I would have added videos of the older days of immigrants and describe How it felt because I'm also a immigrant, so I could compare this time period toward theirs.

    Mtlili Immigration Visualization

When viewing the data collected as a group a few things came to mind. When thinking of America I always thought it was the best place to be no matter where you’re. As in the luxury of living in America was better than any foreign country no matter what occurs in America. I am familiar with the great depression but always thought it was over rated. It turns out when the great depression occurred it was the greatest decrease of incoming immigrants in time.
The way we constructed our visualization was that it would represent how time affected the growth of America. What we did was display each decade in the shape of a circle, the size of the circle represents the amount of immigrants in coming to America that decade. Within each circle is an explanation of why this may have happened. The circles leading up to the most modern circle with the largest number of immigrants seem to be increasing. Therefore the lifestyle in America is increasing. This leads me to believe that within the next 2 decades the amount of immigrants will increase.
The most challenging part of working in a group would be deciding on how the visual would be constructed. We all had different ideas that we each wanted to project. Then we had to find a way to combine our ideas in order to satisfy the whole group. It wasn't that difficult but we were able to accomplish the visual without encountering dilemmas. If I were to do something differently to the visualization I would keep the number of the immigrants in the circle. The information in the circle on the reasoning would be outside the circle attached to each circle with a line. This would make it easier to read the information.

    1. What surprised me most about this information was that although there were many deaths that occurred throughout history due to raids, large accidents, and even just natural deaths, the population of the U.S continued to increase. Even the immigration rate increased at some points but only when colleges opened or laws were passed. But when the U.S were going through their darkest times the immigration stayed low.

    2. I think the immigration rate will decrease again due to the fact that our economy is having major issues and the immigrates came to the U.S to have more opportunities but they won't get that opportunity if the U.S can not even support its own people. People who want to immigrate over will recognize it and would decide that they would rather stay in their own country.

    3. I wasn't entirely sure how to present my information without being extremely wordy since I found many reasons as to why the immigration rate was changing. So making a bar graph to compare the population rate of the U.S to the immigration rate seemed like a pretty good idea without using any words because it's easy to see the difference.

    4. We weren't really sharing a lot of ideas on how to present our information. It would have probably been better if we all did our work at the same time so that we could know what we were working with instead of working on our project while still getting information.

    5. If I had the chance to do this project over I would probably add words to my project since the graphs we made don't seem to explain why the rates were changing. So maybe making a picture or collage with the dates in each picture would have helped to explain why things were changing.

    • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?

      ·        I didn't really expect for immigration to be that big back then. I knew that there were migrants coming in from all over the world but i never really expected it to be so much.  It seemed obvious that while some years immigrations lowered most of them ended up increasing.

    • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.

I believe that current events happening will cause more to migrate in US. I think that most trends of migration are largely affected by problems happening in other countries which causes those people to want to move somewhere that will satisfy their needs.

    • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.

I chose it would be easier to create a Prezi. This is because it helps you organize information better. It allows you to display your information clearly so it easy for the viewer to interpret it.

    • What parts of group work were challenging?

The only thing i found challenging was being able to find information that would support either the decrease or the increase of immigration rates. Other then that i believe that Rugei, Alysha & I worked well with each other.

    • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?

I would have created a more in depth project. Something a bit bigger then just a Prezi. I do believe though that this Prezi will get our ideas across and help us proof our points.

    Immigration Presentation Reflection

    • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
The thing that surprised me most about the data was the general numbers of immigrants. The great depression was literally one of the most depressing times in America and all though there was a severe decrease in immigrants there were still a large amount. It was obvious that in times of war, over seas especially, there would be an increase in people trying to escape from the war zone.

    • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I think the immigration numbers would continue to rise and may have some points from 2000-to present where it decreases because of the economic inflation. I do not think that it would cause a severe drop but it would be a noticeable one.

    • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
Originally my group created a very boring slide show, which we soon fixed to a single image. I had originally wanted to do something basic and even elementary because with things like history sometimes it doesn't hurt to simplify the information so that all people , really uninformed to experts, would understand. I liked the idea of child like smiley faces because if I was the audience it would appeal to me.

    • What parts of group work were challenging?
I think as a group we could've did a better job splitting up the work because with both versions of the presentation someone was left doing 90% of the work. I do think, however, that it was more efficient to work like that in this instance because doing separate things and trying to incorporate it all into one simple photo would have been difficult in the amount of time we had. Although, we did all have a say in what the image should include and how we could represent it. Original ideas were shared by everyone equally.

    • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
I would probably want to make the presentation something a little bit more animate and interactive and somehow portray why the numbers dropped a bit better.

    Allison Patterson - Immigration project

    • What surprised you most about this information?  What seemed quite obvious about explaining this data set?
I felt like it was obvious that the times when there was a lack of immigration were caused by a bad situation in America. It's understandable for people not to want to come to a country during a war or depression. No one will willing put themselves in that position. However I did find it surprising that people left there counties in times of hardship. Not exactly surprising but confusing because as Americans we are going through a rough time economically and we are not abandoning our country.  I think it shows a lack of pride and faith if you leave the minute things get hard.
    • Looking at the overall trend and incorporating what you know about the US presently, predict and defend the immigration trend for the next two decades.
I think we will see a significant drop in immigration because we are having economical problems so no one wants come here. Also, we are trying to keep illegal immigration under control and because the immigration process is so hard no one will want to here legally. So, we will see a lack of immigration.
    • Describe how you made a decision on how to visually represent the information.
We tried a few other sites but Prezis just seemed easy and fun. I liked how we could have the screen turn and read the words or pictures.
    • What parts of group work were challenging?
It was hard making sure everyone did their work and agreed. Manna and I are both strong group leaders. When we work together our projects are always quite good however, determining the way to present them can be challenging.
    • What would you do differently if you had this project to do over?
I really like my project. I would like more info but I also don't want to much so that it's all info. I think where the project is now looks good.
