Negative Space

Posted by Matthew Schreiber in ART9-007 on
1.  Negative Space is the area around an object in a picture. A good example would be if you had an apple. The negative space is everything around the apple.

2. I found the negative space in my cut out by comparing the pieces on one side to the other showing what is negative space and what is not. For the stool it was easy to see what areas around the stool that could be filled in and the areas that can't.

3. Negative space helps the author see the drawling better. It helps the artist figure out which parts or the drawling needs to be shaded in the picture and what is the outline.

4. I think drawling in negative space helps enhance the drawling because it makes the drawling pop out and makes it cooler to see the drawling.

Negative Space

Posted by William Amari in ART9-007 on

Negative space is the opposite of an object that is drawn. It is all the space that is around your drawing. For example if you draw a lamp all the negative space is around the lamp.

In my stool drawing I found negative space where there wasn’t any stool. For example, I found negative space between the legs of the stool. The rest of the negative space was basically in the background of the stools. In my cut out, all the negative space was found in all the light areas of the picture.

Negative space helps artist draw the shapes for each drawing. I do think it enhances drawings because it makes positive space stand out. Also I think it looks cooler.

1.) What's negative space?
* I think that negative space is open space of a drawing that is to be shade in.

2.) Explain how you found negative space in 1.Your cut out? 2. In your stool drawing?
*I found out the negative space in the drawing by figuring it out and by to take a look at it and see the parts what is to be shade in or what is to be cut.

3) Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
* It can help a artist to figure out and see the object of a drawing as in a outline and it also helps to see better.

4.) Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

* We’ll first I do see drawing clear but they are hard to try to figure it out first. Your eyes have to get use to the drawing and get use to it, to get a clear picture.

A.)  What is negative space? Negative space is the space around and between the objects that’s around you.

B.)  Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing? For the cut out and in the stool I found the negative space by looking at the empty spaces around it.

C.)  Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps a artist to see in negative space it can make the drawling easier without every detail and it will make it easy to see what you drawling.

D.)   Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not? I think negative space enhance drawings because without showing every detail you can tell the picture because negative space.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
In art, there are blank spaces( as in spaces where the air goes). This is called negative space.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

In the cut out, I understood that the certain color was negative space. On one side i used that as orange, on the other side, it was highlighted in the brown.

In the stool, I used  space where the air was, that's what negative space is.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps artists to see negative space because it allows them to have a better composition of their pieces.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Drawing showing Negative Space enhances the intensity of the the shape itself. However, for detail, I feel it takes away.

Negative Space Drawling

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) To me, negative space is the space that is in between the actual object you are seeing

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out? I found negative space in my cut out by seeing the outlining of my house and deciding was it the darker part or the lighter part, , 2. in your stool drawing I found the negative space in my drawling by seeing in between the stools and knowing that that was negative space.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps an artist to see in negative space because it helps the object pop out more to the person who is looking at it

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not It does enhance drawling because it shows the different sections of the drawling.

Wynn Geary N/P space

"What is negative space?"
Q1) Negative space is essentially the opposite of what you are used to draw. It allows you to focus on the shape of the object you are drawing opposed to say, texture.

Q2) In my drawing I just drew as normal then I erased any lines inside my "positive space" then i colored in the background and any holes where you could see the background. In my cut  out, I found it really easy, I was shadowing last year at the same time they were doing this, so I found this really easy.

Q3) negative space helps the artist see the shape of what they are drawing

Q4) I personally don't think that Negative space enhances drawings. I prefer texture in a drawing opposed to shape, so it doesn't really apply.

Enthony Chhin's Positive And Negative Space

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)-Well, negative space is like an empty space around an object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in-I found the negative space by looking for the blank spaces in the art.   1. your cut out?-In my cut out looked for the blank areas behind the trees., 2. in your stool drawing?-I looked at the solid things and knew that they were positive and the faded things in the background were negative.

 C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? -It helps the artist to see the thing that they are focusing on, not the things behind the positive area they re focusing on.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?-The negative spacing does enhance the art because it brings the eye straight to the thing that the artist wants the viewer to focus on.

Bailey C's Positive + Negative

Posted by Bailey Collins in ART9-007 on

A. What is negative space? Negative space is the area(s) around an object. You can outline the object, then shade in the wasted area outside of the object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out? I found the negative space by tracing every separate section of the image, and pasting every other section on one side, and the other pieces on the other side. 2. in your stool drawing? To find the negative space of my stool drawing, i looked for the areas around and between the shapes of the object.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps the artist to see the entire shape of the image.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not? I believe it does enhance the drawing. I say this because when you see the negative space, the positive space stands out more.
