Reflection:

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Taina Rosario, in my Advisory. I chose her because I know her pretty well, and she was flexible with the schedule I have.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned how she'll really feel when the seniors graduate from SLA, and who she really cherishes. I also found out about her weekend, what she likes to do, etc. That kind of touched base on the culture that I wanted to dig into. I know we like a lot of the same Spanish music, such as Prince Royce or Aventura.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

This helped me more towards my goal, because finally I realized that there are not only cultural similarities between people and I, but that I'm not terrible at Spanish. I wanted to gain confidence, an abstract goal, but it happened. The main thing was to stop second guessing myself.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I did well on keeping the conversation in motion. I tried to balance asking questions and responding to them, as if the conversation were as comfortable as those in English,

What specifically do you need to improve on?
-Making more of an effort to speak with native Spanish speakers than I know in Spanish.
-Simply spending more time reviewing my tenses.
-Reading books in Spanish.

1.    Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner:

- SharedTalk; Miki

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

He is my old friend, one of the people that I talked to on sharedtalk before. I know enough about him, such as how he learned English, and it was really through sharedtalk which is a fun fact, but also, he asked me to help him out a bit with a problem, and I did, but all I have from that conversation is a small ss, because interned decided to turn off for a bit.

2.    /How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

Again, he learned English on Sharedtalk, which is awesome, and really fits my goal of learning how others learn English.

3.    What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on?

I think that the best thing that I did was helping him out, which really felt nice, but as for my goals, figuring out that Ecuadorian people speak English and call white guys Gringo!!!!!

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rc

I think I improved a lot overall, so I would say that our conversation was on a pretty high level.

Turning Off the Translator Part 4

Posted by Kamilah Hudson in SP3-005 on
  1. Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner:

    - SharedTalk; Mariano
  2. What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

      - From this conversation I learned that Mariano is a 20 year old guy who loves to play rugby and wants to improve his english. His english is moderately okay and although Rugby is dangerous he plays because he has a burning passion for it deep within. He wishes to have a career based in international trade and so between going to school for that and working he doesn't think he can go be a professional rugby player. I Also learned that he as a very good sense of humor. I respect to the entire conversation I feel like I've grown in my ability to keep conversations fluent.
  3. /How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?
  4. This conversation was helpful because it gave me more opportunity to have a conversation and work to keep the flow of it smooth. During the conversation Mariano corrected me on little errors which was helpful because it helped me to notice what I needed to work to improve on more. It also helped me see my common errors.
  5. What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on?

I think the thing I did well in this conversation was keeping it fluent. I estimated how the conversation would go, planned questions and comments ahead of time, and looked up all the words I thought that I would need ahead of time. My goal was to not have to use a translator and I accomplished that to best of my ability. My goal was also to not have a strick Q and A kind of flow but an actual conversation. It made me realize though that I need to work on not mixing up words and the way i arrange words.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

Gustavo and Nestor were two different people that I talked to
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

From both people I learned that I am able to keep a conversation going and that it is not that hard to be able to talk spanish with multiple people at one time as long as your focused.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

I didn't have a specific goal for goal 5 I just wanted to enhance my spanish and I was able to do that by talking to more than one person at a time.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

Something that I think that I did well with all the blog post and especially the final blog post since I spoke with two people at a time.

Henninger Conversation, Post 5 - Deportes

Posted by Sophia Henninger in SP3-005 on

Pre-Conversation:

•  What will be your topic of conversation be?

Sports, deportees, in other countries.

•  What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

 - ¿Te gusta deportes?

 - ¿Qué deportes juegas?

 - ¿Qué deportes se puede ver en la televisión?

 - ¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito?

 - ¿Tiene usted un atleta profesional favorito?

•  What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

It will be interesting to see what sports are popular there versus the US.

•  What are you nervous about?

Not everyone likes/plays sports so it may be difficult to have a good conversation about it.

Post-Conversation

• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Luiz, 16, from Brazil. I chose to speak to him because he was around my age and I thought the conversation would be easier and simple.

• What did you learn about them?

I learned that he likes soccer and basketball. He also told me that people knowing about American football is rare in Brazil. He's only seen one American football game.

• How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It helped me get a better idea of what life is like for a south American teenager. In many ways it's very similar to my own but there are definitely some differences.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I learned about sports in Brazil.

• What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I wish I could have continued the conversation for longer and get more information.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to Marco. He is cool I guess, and we had a long discussion, but I was only able to ss one small part of our discussion.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he learned English for two years and Russian for a little while, I learned how he did it, his reasons and…. Then we just talked about our lives in both languages.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
My goal was and is to find out about people’s language skills, which means that this one obviously helped a lot.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I… simply learned about him. I did not follow my goal too much, but for a good chunk of our discussion, I did, so… yea!

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Jesus from spain. I choose him because he was from Spain and I heard spain had a major strike so I talked to him.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned about his some spanish activities he does in spain. I also learn that there are Cheesesteaks in spain. The are called Filadelfia Cheesesteaks. There. Finally I learned about the Strike. He said it was all the governments fault for not paying the schools.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I forgot what my original goal was so I changed it to learning about the strike. I helped me a lot by letting me understand in a spanish persons eyes what the strike was all about.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I did well asking questions about the topic and having follow up questions so the situation wouldn't be awkward/.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I said Cheesesteaks in english. I don't know what the spanish translation was but  he at least got it.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner?

I spoke with this girl from Venezuela named Zulelulsmar. She started the conversation.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

She's a petroleum engineer and also a bit about Venezuelan holidays. How it gets out of control and crazy during holidays.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

Learned how to properly arrange certain sentences.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I think I did well in at least being able to interpret what she was trying to say. I do need to improve on sentence structures and the proper use of vocabs. Such as "si, soy un estudiante" or "no estudio en la universidad, en escuela secundaria"
