My partner's name was Kike Santiago from Mexico. We spoke in Spanish over video chat and he also spoke English very well, so if I had a question I would send it to him over a text chat. We did drills of conjugation because I was having problems with saying things in the future tense when I would mean the past tense. I was happy because Kike knew a lot of English and if he could see me struggling he would help but not give me the answer.

What did you learn about your partner?

I learned that Kike lives in Mexico and completed his studies as a naval engineer. He lives with his mother and grandmother in a house and takes care of the both of them. He also works at a shipyard and because of his studies he has more flexibility with his job than everyone else.

What did you learn from them?

I learned that a lot of the music that I listen to in America they listen to as well. The thing is that I think the music takes a little while longer to get to them. I also learned how to conjugate irregular verbs in the future, present and past.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that when I begin to screw up a bit, I mess up things that I already know because I get nervous.

What were you surprised about?

I was surprised that we had such a long conversation but I was also glad that we got the opportunity to talk and that he agreed to help me out.

What are you proud of?

I'm proud that I was able to hold a conversation in Spanish for 30 minutes. I struggled a little bit I was surprised and happy with myself.

Henninger Conversation, Post 3 - Peliculas

Posted by Sophia Henninger in SP3-005 on
Before:

•  What will be your topic of conversation be?

This conversation is about movies.

•  What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

 - Do you like movies?

 - Do you have a favorite actor?

 - What kind of movies do you like?

 - What is playing in theaters right now?

 - Do you have a favorite movie?

•  What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I'm excited because everyone has a favorite movie and it will be interesting to hear what these people like.

•  What are you nervous about?

I hope I know what movies the person is talking about so I can't think of something normal to say about them.

Reflection:

• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Jacobo from Mexico. He was 26. I didn't choose him but he started talking to me and it worked out.

• What did you learn about them?

I learned he likes Harry Potter movies, but he likes the books more. Jacobo's five favorite movies are Amelie, Love Actually, Bridget Jones Diary, Las Listas de Schindler(Schindler's List), Inglorious Bastards.

• How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I learned that almost every movie we have here is also all over the world. I always thought we had our movies and other countries had theirs and only rarely was a movie shown in more than one country. It just surprised me.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

He told me about his favorite movies and what was playing in theaters in Mexico.

• What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

At one point I got confused and tried to correct myself but I said "wait" in english by accident. That was a mistake of mine. I just have to be more careful and not immediately reply every time.

#3 - Goal & Conversation

Posted by Christian Gelbolingo in SP3-005 on
Goal:
Learn about the music they listen to. Find out how similarities/differences.

Pre-Conversation (Questions):
• Hola, ¿Puede usted hablar conmigo?
• ¿Tengo un proyecto para la clase de español. Tengo que hablar con un desconocido en español. Puede usted hablar conmigo?
• ¿Que musica escuchas?

Conversation #2:
• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to Jorge Luis Flores Garcia, a 23 year old man, from Costa Rica. I chose to speak to him because his native language was Spanish and he is practicing English.

• What did you learn about them?
I learned that he was from Costa Rica. I also learned that he likes bachata. Bachata is a form of music and dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. He also likes salsa merengue. When I asked him what American artists/bands he listens to, he told me that he listens to Aventura, an American bachata music group.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I found out that there was a big difference in the styles of music we listen to. I listen to modern indie pop/indie folk and Jorge listens to Spanish music. Although Aventura is an American band, I don't know who they are.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I think I handled this conversation very well. I did not rush into it and asked him what kind of music he listened to at first, I waited until it wasn't awkward and I got to know he more.

• What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I feel like I ended the conversation too quickly with this one. So on my next conversation, I will keep the conversation going longer.

Reflection:

For this conversation I continued talking to Brianna Perrin. I like talking to her because I know her intentions as a friend is to help me with my spanish. This conversation was kind of review of the stuff we learned last year about daily routines. In this conversation I learned what a day being Brianna is like. Reviewing the things I have learned previously is essential in progressing towards becoming fluent. I noticed that I'm using the dictionary less and ranking my brain for words that I already know that will get the point across. I'm still improving on smooth transitions between questions.

Thingy #3

Posted by Sergey Kuznetsov in SP3-005 on

·       Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
Talked to Nayeli, and I chose her, because she is a cool girl, and likes chess (I found that one out later.

·       What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

It seems that she loves to play chess, and have been learning English for some time on her own, and a bit in special classes. She is actually quite an interesting person.

·       How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Since my personal goal is to find out more about how people learn different languages, I believe learning about her way of “learning” is quite interesting and helpful!

·       What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I actually hadn’t used translator all that much, and like I said, I have learned about her way of learning English.

·       What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

My grammar unquestionably.

Proyecto de Conversacíon - Blog Post #3

Posted by Allen Yang in SP3-005 on
  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Emilio from Spain again. He seemed fun to speak with the first time, we have a lot similar/common interests.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

He doesn't listen to music a lot, but he does have a variety of likes and dislikes. He likes, rap, soundtracks from movies, heavy metal, rock and etc. But he doesn't like reggaeton at all, one of his big dislikes.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

He taught me some some tense changes in spanish. It was very helpful, and being able to speak to him casually boosts self esteem.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

Assisting or helping me out with changes in tense forms, and expanding in my vocabulary.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I still need to work on conjugations and how they would fit correctly in the form of a sentence.

Blog #4 - Música!

Posted by Chelsea Smith in SP3-005 on

¿Te gusta musica?

¿Que es musica favorita?

¿Que es popular musica en Mexico?

¿Que es favorita concerta?

¿Música es muy importante en tu vida?

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I want to learn about the music they listen to and see if its anything like what I listen to. I know some places listen to American music that would be cool to find out to!

What are you nervous about?

I not really nervous, I am more excited!

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I talked to a boy names Vann from Mexico, I chose him just randomly because I thought it might be cool to talk to someone from a different country but not a country to far away to compare music differences.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned that he likes all different types of music and has been to a few concerts. He is a very music friendly person. He is mainly into like house and techno type music.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I learned about music in a spanish speaking country and had a really good conversation. I enjoyed it.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I learned about music and the conversation was the longest one I have had yet and it actually flowed well!

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to figure out a better way to end the conversation without cutting it right off with a bye.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with Emilio from Spain, he was 20 years old which made it easier to talk to him since he wasn't to much older.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that he wanted to learn spanish because he feels like it is necessary for him. He told me how everything in the world is english based, such as games, movies, etc. He told me that everyone studies english over in spain which i found to be interesting.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Well it helped me to realize how big english is around the world as opposed to other languages.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I was able to improve on my vocabulary.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I need to work a little on my conjugations and make sure I am getting them in the right tenses.

#2 - Goal & Conversation

Posted by Christian Gelbolingo in SP3-005 on
Goal:
Talk to someone without using a translator for help. Use what you know. (Thank's for the idea, Kamilah!)

Pre-Conversation (Questions):
• Hola, ¿Puede usted hablar conmigo?
• ¿Cómo estás?

Conversation #2:
• Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke to Jose Adame from Bogotá, Columbia. I chose to speak to him because his native language was Spanish and he is practicing English.

• What did you learn about them?
I learned that he was from Bogotá. He also told me that the education in Columbia is kind of the same as the United State's but a bit harder for most people to get.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
When I found out about where he lived, it was easier for me to talk to him. I felt more comfortable.

• What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
At first it was hard for me to form sentences and talk to the person because I don't know if what I'm saying is correct. Most of the time, I use translators to correct anything in my sentence that's wrong but since I can't use it for my goal, I had to speak with what I know. Also, I asked the person sitting next to me for some help correcting my mistakes.

• What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to work on my communication skills because at first, it was very awkward talking to him. Our conversation didn't flow but towards the end, it did and he gave me really good advice if I want to become a dermatologist.
