Proyecto de Conversación - Pt 3

Posted by Breeanna Noi in SP3-005 on
Who did I speak to and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Seba F. on Skype after I met him on SharedTalk. I chose to speak to him because he was eager to learn and was very curious. So instead of me asking a bajillion questions, he asked and I answered.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I didn't learn much about him. He was a curious person who was planning on moving to the States and it seemed like a really big change because he barely knew the language.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It helped me achieve my goal because I didn't feel like an interviewer. I was actually having a legitimate conversation with someone who was just as curious as I was.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well with conjugating my words better and explaining things to Seba.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

We were kind of speaking Spanglish. He spoke broken English and I spoke broken Spanish. But we understood each other. He'd ask a question in English and I'd respond in Spanish then we'd switch.

I've only attached part of the conversation because it was lengthy.

  • Is your research question clear from the beginning?
Not really, we kind of have to flow through some casualties first then ask the question.
  • Did you post the questions you came up with before having the conversation?  Did you predict how your partner would answer those questions?
Well, we were talking about what we're doing and we both said that we just ate dinner. Then the question just came up and then it went on and on.
  • Did you research your topic before you had the conversation?
Not really, because I think it's better to ask the people themselves than research it myself.
  • Did you post the transcript/video/audio of your conversation?
    Yes, I do.
  • Did you post a paragraph that answers the reflection questions I ask of you in the project description?
    Yes, I did.
  • Did you make it look pretty?  Are there hyperlinks to interesting sources you found while researching your topic?  Do you include images and/or video of your topic?
It's not like eye catching pretty but well organized and whatnot.
  • Did you format your blog professionally?
    I guess I did.

o   Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

The girl’s name was Astrid, and I talked to her because she actually responded!

o   What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

We didn’t get a chance to finish our conversation, but I know that she is about my age, a bit older, and she is learning English on her own, which is really hard!

o   How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

My new goal is to find out about people’s abilities to speak languages that are not their own (having me as the test subject as well) I am pretty happy with this discussion.

o   What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

o   I am pretty sure that if I could do this again, I would do it the same way.

  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

    - I can't remember his name and I didn't take a screen shot of his name but it was something very weird.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - From talking with this person I learned that a conversation can go either way wether its in a good way or bad way. He did help me how to tell someone that I don't want to talk to them and be just fine with that
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

-In general my personal goals are to improve my spanish and I believe the more people I talk to the better my spanish does seem to get.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

    - As usual just being able to keep the conversation going is one of my strong spots.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with girl name Araceil from Peru. I chose her because she was nice and understanding that I'm not a native speaker.

My goal was asking what activities she does.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

What I learned are some interesting things to do like how guys flirt en espanol. She mostly said that they say Tu hermonse. She also said she doesn't want to get into it. So I also ask what she does for fun in Peru. She plays volley ball and watches la television. I lear

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It helped me learn what people in Peru do to have fun. It was great. Now I can talk about volleyball to Peru people. She also helped me with conjugation and spanish slang like q = que.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well maintaining my conversation goals. I also did well on my mental goal and limiting my word reference/ Spanish Dict. Until she started using slang. Then I was lost. But making questions before really helps with the understanding until you ask the wring question.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I still need to work on not using WordRefrence as much. I need to conjugate better. Finally I need to learn some spanish slang so I don't get lost again.

Turning Off the Translator Part 3

Posted by Kamilah Hudson in SP3-005 on
  1. Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner:

    1. - SharedTalk; Alberto

  2. What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

      - I learned that Alberto is 17 and is in high school. He's good at math and wants to study computers. His mother tried to get him to draw and do architecture but he didn't like it because he wasn't very good at it. I also learned that he's been studying english for two years and wants to continue learning.
  3. /How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

I think this was helpful to me because I got to practice my conversation skills more. I used the translator only three times and two were just to make sure I was understanding completely what he was saying. This helps me in my goal to stop using the translator because it proves my idea that if i keep practicing talking to people, phrases and words will stick to memory and then I won't have to look them up as often.
  4. What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on?

    - I think specifically i made sure I only used the translator as a last resort and I didn't try to say things that were too hard for my vocabulary. From this though I realized that I need to further expand my vocabulary. Because of this I plan to continue using sharedtalk and learn from experience.

LA COMIDA OH LA LA ~

Posted by Pauline Garcia in SP3-005 on
  • Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

I spoke to Martin and I forgot where he's from. I think he's from Texas, well near Texas. I didn't actually choose him. He just asked me to chat with him. I'm also kind of practicing to be open and not get stuck of being scared to talk to guys. It went well and he's not creepy at all! So that was a nice experience :)

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that he's from somewhere near Texas. He likes chinese food and he loves sea food. He barely eat crabs because it's really expensive and rare in their place.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

It's not really in my list but I finally have the guts to speak to guys online. My shyness and thinking they're creepy is out of the line. So hooray! Oh and I finally had the chance to speak okay-ish.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I think I did well this time. We have a flowing conversation but I noticed that he mostly speak and ask questions. I need to ask more questions and speak more. That's my new goal. Speak more!

Conversation Question: What is the daily life a person living in Spain like?

    Pre-Conversation:

    •  What will be your topic of conversation be?

I will try to find out what a typical day in the life of a person living in Spain is like. I will inquire about what time people usually go to work, eat lunch and dinner. I also want to know what people do on their weekends. I have been hearing on the news lately that Spain is facing a huge economic crisis. I also want to find out about how this is affecting people in Spain.

    •  What are 5 questions related to your conversation goal that you can think of ahead of time to ask your partner?

    1. What time you wake up and you go to bed?

    2. What time do you eat lunch?

    3. When do you have work?

    4. Do you go to church on Sundays?

    5. What do you do for fun on the weekends?

    6. How are the current economic problems affecting people you know?

    •  What are you looking forward to about this conversation?

I am looking forward to having a long, sustained conversation because I have so many questions to get answered. I am also looking to share things about the United States, especially Philadelphia, with the person I talk to.

    •  What are you nervous about?

I have gotten so used to sharedtalk that I am not nervous about anything. I am only feeling excited to get the conversation started because I have an interesting conversation question that I can't wait to get answered.

    Post-Conversation:

    Reflection:

    • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Luna Riverio and I chose her because she was the same age as me (17 years old). I wanted to get the views of a young, relatable person. Luna also lived in Madrid, which is a city similar in size to Philadelphia and I wanted compare my daily routine with her's.

    • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that Luna is a 17 year old living in Madrid. On the weekends, Luna likes to go to the movies or the theater, visit the park, sing and play the guitar. Sundays are spent with the family. Luna is a ballerina and she practices for 3 hours everyday after school. Luna said that her family does not have financial problems but life is bad for other people. Because of the poor economic situation people do not go on vacations, to the movies or go out to eat. I learned that people in Spain often go to work at 8 in the morning and eat lunch at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. One thing that I thought was interesting is that people in Spain typically eat dinner at 9-10 PM and a meal often consists of tapas. This is a huge contrast to the United States because most families usually eat dinner at 6-7 PM. The most common form of transit in Spain is the metro/subway.

    • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

My personal goal is to learn about the life, politics and culture of foreign countries while at the same time learning new Spanish vocabulary and using my current vocabulary to effectively communicate. I this conversation, I was able to fulfill all of the above goals since I learned a lot of new vocabulary words and I got to use my existing vocabulary to talk to Luna. I also got a glimpse into the daily life of people in Spain.

    • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I was able to get all of my questions answered and even after this, I still kept the conversation going. I also responded to Luna's questions about my life in the United States. I did not just keep on asking questions after questions. I not only gain valuable knowledge about Spain but I also got the opportunity to tell Luna about my daily routine and what I do on the weekends and after school.

    • What specifically do you need to improve on?

For this conversation, I had to use word reference a few times in order for me to ask Luna some of my questions. I decided to use word reference because I really wanted to get my questions answered because I worked so hard preparing them. I have not used any translation help for my two previous blogs so I felt a little bad using it now. However, this will push me harder to try to use my current Spanish vocabulary to get my point across without using word reference.
