Kamille looks directly at me. "Zip."

My head snaps to look at Slim. "Zap!"

Slim turns and claps his hands towards Rob. "Zop."

Rob looks at Cam. "Zip."

Cam looks at Jay. "Zap."

Jay stops to think as quickly as he can. "Zap! No wait... fuck."

We all start to laugh.

"Sit downnnn." Cam yells, ready to continute with the game.

"Ready?"

"Yeah," we all answer with competitive smiles.

"Zip!" Cam continued the stupidest, but the most fun game we all played.

We should punish those who add to the country's turmoil, not those trying to fix it.

Posted by Andre Serrano in STORY-002 on
Firemen, police officers and teachers all serve their patriotic duties to their country every day. Children, full of innocence and ignorance, go to school to learn and laugh and play with kids every day. None of these previously mentioned have contributed a dime to the nations deficit. So why are they getting punished? Philadelphia's most recent resolution to leveling the debt? Reduce kindergarten programs to only a half day, while eliminating transpasses as a means of transportation. This is placing a huge unnecessary burden of the families of those who are not responsible for the nations debt and, for lack of a better word, it is absurd.

We are getting out of Philly at the right time.

Today was the day

Posted by Taylor Valentine in STORY-002 on
Today, after months (OK, more like a few weeks) of hardcore studying, frequent late night sessions, which were more like parties because of the food and music, and stacks of flashcards, the day, full of nerves and emotion, had finally arrive, though the test was much easier than I'd expected (practice tests are always impossible) and the worst part was sitting in the same room for five hours.

Not the worst way to spend a Wednesday..

Ahmad- Back in the Day

Posted by Sinnea Douglas in STORY-002 on
  • Back in the days when i was young i'm not a kid anymore
  • But some days i sit and wish i was a kid again
  • Back in the days when i was young i'm not a kid anymore
  • But some days i sit and wish i was a kid again
  • Back in the days
  • Verse one:
  • When i just a little niggerole
  • I looked up to my bigger bro
  • Begged if i could kick it so
  • When he went out with girls i could go taggin along
  • Naggin if she had a sis maybe could mack a baby hoodrat
  • Y'all remember way back then, when it was 1985
  • All the way live, i think i was about ten
  • One of those happy little niggaz singin the blues
  • That be always tryin to bag with the shag (and karate shoes)
  • Sayin "yo momma black, his momma this, his momma that"
  • Then he get mad and wanna scrap
  • We stay mad about, ten minutes then it's like back on the bike
  • To play hide and go get it with the younger hoes by the bungaloes
  • Then switch to playin ding dong ditch, when that gets
  • Old and too cold to hack it, threw on a bomber jacket
  • You could tell the ballers cuz they bell wearin gazelles
  • If they really had money raised be sportin bk's
  • And, all the girls had they turkish link
  • If it broke then they made earrings to it, like they meant to do it
  • But, sometimes, i still sit and reminesce
  • Then, think about the years i was raised, back in the day

    A Change of Pace

Posted by Marchella Baldwin in STORY-002 on
I don't like bragging about myself. I'm really not that kind of person. But last Saturday in poetry workshop (here at SLA) our prompt was to write a poem full of hyperboles. And it was fun. I got to say crazy stuff like my voice stops a newborn's crying. And blow stuff out of proportion. Like people usually say I have a great smile but I said that it would make people run 10 miles just to get me what I want. I'm going to stop describing the poem now and just let you read it for yourself. Enjoy!

                                                   Hyperbole Poem

I’m sorry to crush your dreams today

But I have to inform you

That you will never meet anybody more awesome than me

When you look up kind in the dictionary

My name will be its definition

I save people from burning buildings on a weekly basis

And the sound of my angelic voice silences a newborn’s crying

My voice is smooth and soft during conversation

But when I get up on stage

    To recite a poem

The fiery string of words that spill out my mouth

Triggers the fire station’s alarm system

    My laugh is literally infectious

There is no way around it

If I laugh you WILL be laughing with me

Most of the time at my own jokes

    Because I’m just that funny

And please don’t get me started on my smile

The minute I fold my mouth up

    Part my lips

And show the most glorious arrangement of teeth you’ve ever seen

    You will run 10 miles

Just to get me what I want

And most of all my writing is fantastic

The spectacular way I string words together

Makes you believe anything I’m saying

And as you can tell from reading this right now

    I’m pretty magnificent

And you will never ever meet anybody more awesome than me

    Second Chances

Posted by Deja Scarborough in STORY-002 on
They say everybody deserves a second chance, and while I believe that is true sometimes it hurts to give that person second chance. You think to yourself they wouldn't need a second chance if they didn't mess up the first time, but then again everyone makes mistakes. Even though I am giving you a second chance don't think that there will be a third because I been put through enough. So remember yes this is your second chance but it is also your last.
