Learn ~ Create ~ Lead
The Science Leadership Academy (SLA) is a new Philadelphia public high school that opened its doors on September 7, 2006.
Developed in partnership with The Franklin
Institute and its commitment to inquiry-based science, SLA provides
a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum with a focus on
science, technology, mathematics and entrepreneurship. Students at
SLA learn in a project-based environment where the core values of
inquiry, research, collaboration,
presentation and reflection are emphasized in all classes.

During the last 12 weeks of ILPs, Ashirah Rollins, Troy Robinson, Alex
Cotellessa, Brain White, Ashley Robinson and myself Shannel Ashby became a
team to create a business of our own. During this time we have had hands
on classes for 12 weeks about how we can create a professional business
plan, which we needed to prepare for the judges of the competition.
Empowerment Group supported this competition. The winners would receive
$5,000 dollars for first place, $2,500 for second place and 1,500 for third.
The time leading up to the official competition was growing nearer and my
team and I were still on top of our game until the day of the competition.
This experience was something else! The feelings of being so close to
having your important goal come true. Making our business plan and
creating a presentation that would impress the judges was nerve racking at
first. Not to long after I started to realize that, we (SLA students) do
this type of thing all the time in SLA. Thanks to my new found working
habits I was more prepared the ever for this competition. In the end of
all the sweat and tears that went into this business “FreeStyle” has won
SECOND PLACE, and is looking forward to starting officially in 2009! Thank
you SLA for being there and support and congratulations to the FreeStyle
team that will be looking forward to business next year!
