The Museum Experience

Through The Science Leadership Academy’s partnership with The Franklin Institute, our students will have the unique opportunity to further their project-based, interdisciplinary studies through a series of classes and internships at The Franklin Institute.  Facilitated by the renown TFI Youth Programs Staff and centered around the rich resources and exhibits housed at the museum, these enrichment sessions will provide our students with an unparalleled exposure to and exploration of multiple facets of scientific inquiry.  Our students will get a “behind the scenes” view of The Franklin institute, as well as access to the museum’s archives and exhibits – making this world-renown museum into an extension of our campus.

The museum experience component for our students will consist of 2 major strands, with a complementary leadership opportunity.  Students will explore topics presented by various museum departments, including public programs, exhibit design, and educational technology.  Initially, students will establish interest in a particular area through a four-week mini-course. Subsequently, they will explore how their course interest translates into work experience in the museum, including internships.

9th Grade Exposure:
Students will have the opportunity to select from a series of “mini-courses”, offered in 4-week segments. Examples include “Galaxy Experience,” “Identity,” and “Computer Game Design.”

10th Grade Enrichment:
After completing any series of mini-courses, students will have the opportunity to apply for an internship within the department which their coursework was completed.

PACTS II:
Modeled after the signature youth leadership program of the Franklin Institute, through this leadership program
students will have the opportunity to work on specific research and hands on projects focusing on several areas of
science.  This component will be offered for 9th and 10th grade students.
