Albert Einstein

This historic scientist is a household name, but few know exactly why. How did he contribute to scientific advancement? Did his research really start the nuclear age? How did he become famous? My essay looks into these questions and more, talking about everything from Einstein's philosophy to relativity. Read the full essay here:

Quarter 2 Art By Lukas Aznar

Artist Statement

During this quarter, I definitely felt more comfortable with my artwork. I really enjoyed doing some of the artwork that was required of me this quarter. One of my favorite pieces of art work was the assignment where we were told to edit a photo and show the before and after. I enjoyed this because it gave us a chance to do a different kind of art which I enjoyed. When I was doing my college, I wanted to pinpoint something that I saw a lot in modern magazines. And while flipping through some pages I realized that most of the ads pinpointed one demographic; Americans. This was perfect for me because not only do I love the United States of America, but i felt like it would make for a cool collage. I cut out all of the things That I saw that seemed like it was being pointed towards that demographic, and I came out with this collage.

While drawing the fabric, I just really wanted to get the shading right. I think I did a really good job with that. As far as the editing of the photo, I think I had the most fun, I got to edit a photo of Kanye West and make his image seem much more dark yet stand out. I was really happy with how i toned down all of the background and pinpointed him as the main attraction. I then highlighted all of the bright colors and brought all of the attention to that. My final piece of art was a portrait of a poem. And the poem was about happiness, so I envisioned a town full of happy people. I think that it came out looking exactly how I wanted it to. At the end of the quarter I am very happy with all of my final products and I am excited to learn more and more about Art and how to make the best product that I can

Q2 Art Portfolio

Hello, My name is Mingxue Zheng and the following slide show will contain the three artwork and one photograph that I've created in the second quarter of my senior art class. Our class is divided up into three groups, passing, middle, and FAS (future art student). As a "middle" I need to complete...

1.) Art Collage (8x11")
2.) Fabric Drawing (8x11")
3.) Edited Photo
4.) Illustrating a piece of writing from Children's books.

The first artwork that I was so hyped up about is the collage. I never did a collage that needs to convey a deeper meaning before. It took me 2-3 days to formulate ideas for the collage.

My collage should be simple and visually appealing. There should be a sharp contrast as well. So, I did a "Hot & Cold" collage with a grandma crossing between the cold and hot terrane of the collage. On the cold terrane there is a lot of black and white landscapes. To add a pop of color, I added a series of blue butterflies so it will not be overly dull. On the hot terrane, there are a lot of orange to red color schemes; making a more vibrant atmosphere.

The most challenging art piece was to create a fabric drawing. It took me a lot time to figure out where to shade. After a bunch of diligent tries, I finally have the drawing. However, it still doesn't look like a fabric.

The third task is to edit a photo. I chose to edit a photo of Chinatown's signature landmark because I lived there. I am very proud of that picture as a Chinese immigrant. Since, I like everything to be sharp and colorful. I chose to saturate the photograph.

For the fourth task, I chose to illustrate a piece of writing from Where the Wild Things Are. I chose to change the protagonist to a female because females should be portrayed as audacious and adventurous rather than obedient all the time. I also change the monster to a European horror influenced Chinese mythological creature.

I really have a lot to improve. But, trying new things are always good. To me, art is a medium that helps me to imagine. Someday, the sometimes obscure imaginations within my brain could be drag into the world of reality.

Miles Davis

Miles Davis was a Jazz trumpeter mainly known for his volatile temper and his eclectic and innovative music.

Here is a little website I made about him. In making it I tried to not only talk about him, but to display his music and some of what makes it special.

Alexander Graham Bell

I dedicated my NHD project on Alexander Graham Bell, a man who changed the future with his invention. He was the first person to create a telephone or he was the first person to receive the patent for creating the telephone. My thesis is: "Alexander Graham Bell lived his entire life with an effort to overcome and coexist with challenges as opposed to disregarding them. His challenges sparked ideas that began his progression in innovating. One of the most prominent technology now, cell phones, is due to his efforts to constantly think and innovate. Alexander Graham Bell has truly left a remarkable legacy that is evident in our daily lives."

The Legacy of George Washington

My project was about the leadership and legacy of George Washington. Its not about his presidency for the United States, its about how he led a an army called the Continental Army to America gain it's independence. This website goes through certain points throughout the Continental Army. Click the link below to learn more.

The Leadership and Legacy of Norman Borlaug and the Green Revolution

My website is about the leadership that Norman Borlaug took to lead the Green Revolution, and the legacy that he left behind. He was the father of the Green Revolution, a large series of agricultural improvements that happened in roughly the 1960s, and it increased the world's food production. In his attempt to reverse the global food crisis, Norman Borlaug created a strain of wheat that helped to feed billions. Through years of hard work and dedication, Norman Borlaug was able to achieve great success that is responsible for the saving of so many lives.

Andrew Jackson "People's President"

My website explains all about Andrew Jackson's life. You can learn more about why he was called the People's president by reading the information in my website below. Andrew Jackson impacted the lives of many people and changed perspective on how government and congress work. He also started up the 2 party system. Andrew Jackson really helped make America where it is today! Hope you like the website !

Q2 Art Portfolio

Artist's Statement

You can’t always limit what you can do, because then, you’re not creating. There have been plenty of times where I gave up on something, because I always compared my art to others, and it never worked out in the end. Art is something to be enjoyed, no matter what the medium. And if you’re not being you, what’s the point in making something for people to enjoy?

The secret to art isn’t skill, it’s loving what you do, and taking risks with yourself.

Q2- Advanced Art

As an artist, I wanted to explore different mediums of art. I normally do a lot of drawings but there is so much more to discover. This quarter, there was four assignments. Two of them are drawings, one is a collage and the last one is a photo edit. In my artwork, I wanted to incorporate memories and things that were important to me as a child. I think that a piece of artwork would look a lot better if it was meaningful. My favorite piece was my book illustration because this is one of my favorite children's book. I really resonated with this particular scene in the book when Edward was sinking further and further into the ocean.

Roy & Walt, NHD - Lauren & Caitlin

Short introduction to our project:
National History Day's theme this year is Leadership and Legacy. Lauren and Caitlin decided to create their project on Roy O Disney and Walt Disney. The two brothers created an entertainment empire based off of one idea. Even though the two were very different leaders, their legacy is remarkable. Chicken Quesadillas

Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Whole grain all flour tortilla wraps

  • skinless chicken breast

  • whole onion

  • whole green pepper

  • mushrooms

  • 3 blend mexican cheese

  • olive oil

  • salt

  • pepper

Process

  1. Take your onion, green peppers and mushrooms and dice them up into tiny pieces

  2. In George Foreman Grill or in pan cook chicken breast until it’s safe to eat.

  3. Once cooked cut up chicken breast into small pieces.

  4. Grab a pan and cover pan with a light blanket of olive oil.

  5. Turn pan on to medium low heat and throw the tortilla wrap into pan.

  6. Take your 3 blend mexican cheese and sprinkle it until tortilla is completely covered.

  7. Take your diced cooked chicken breast pieces and put them on the layer of cheese spreading them out evenly.

  8. Take your diced vegetables and repeat step 7.

  9. Put another layer of cheese on the chicken and vegetables.

  10. Take another tortilla and put it on top.

  11. Once first layer of cheese has melted carefully flip the quesadilla so that the other side can do the same.

  12. Once both sides of cheese has melted turn off stove cut up into favored amount of slices and enjoy.

Analysis

Not only is this meal extremely tasty it is also very healthy. With the only ingredient that I think is processed is the 3 blend cheese, every other ingredient on here is completely natural. This is an easy to make meal with all natural ingredients and while none of these ingredients are organic they are still better than eating processed foods.

Now while meat is somewhat of a no-no from what I learned was poultry is the healthiest choice of meat to choose from. Chicken is an excellent source of protein and isn’t a red meat so the risk of cancer and obesity goes down my a significant margin. And since it’s not processed that adds more points to the healthy factor. Let’s look at the tortilla bread next. The tortilla bread I am using is all flour and whole wheat making it completely natural. Also thanks to it being whole wheat it’s way healthier than buying white tortilla bread which is sometimes processed to make it look white. To add a bit more health benefits to the dish I decided to add all natural vegetables . Green bell peppers are a great source of vitamin C, onions help regulate blood sugar to a safe level and mushrooms help combat chronic diseases. The 3 blend Mexican cheese is with pasteurized milk which makes it the only thing on this list thats processed. The only health benefit the cheese has is being low in cholesterol and sugars.

Reflection

I’ve learned a lot about food this unit, especially about the western diet and how it affects humans. I always knew the western diet was little worse than everyone else’s diet, but didn’t know it was worse than what I thought it to be. I had no idea some of the top leading deaths in America were diet related and it shows how bad the American diet really is. Another thing I noticed was that there are more obese people in the south than any other part of the country. This is due to the amount of meat they eat which I learned is in correlation with cancer.

Some food changes I could make would be not eating as much processed foods. Eating foods that take forever to decay can’t be good if its sitting in your stomach. Cutting back on the processed foods would probably make me healthier overall; however, I think it would be insanely hard to do this since most of the foods we eat are processed. Also whole foods tend to be much more expensive than processed foods since processed foods can be made in a factory. Once I start living on my own and buy my own food I would consider not buying as much processed foods.

Quiche

Serving Size: 4

Quiche

Ingredients:

  • 9-inch refrigerated pie crust

  • tablespoon of olive oil

  • 1 red bell pepper

  • 1 onion

  • 4 eggs

  • ¾ of a cup of half and half

  • 2 cups of swiss cheese

Recipe:

  1. Heat oven at 375.

  2. Put peppers and onion in olive oil for 5 minutes or until some what soft.

  3. Whisk together your eggs and half and half and after mixed put in peppers, onions and cheese.

  4. Pour the mixture in to the crust and then place in oven for 35 minutes.

Analysis:

Most of the ingredients used in my dish are not processed. The eggs, peppers, and onions are not processed while the half and half, cheese, and pie crust is processed. The pie crust has no sugars and 649 calories, the eggs have 200 calories and no sugars, the cheese has no sugars but is 500 calories, the half and half has 100 calories and 1g of sugar, while the peppers and onions have no sugars and each have 24 and 44 calories. So although this may seem like a lot of calories keep in mind that this is a serving size for four and that there are a lot of things in the meal that are needed. This includes some dairy and vegetables are necessary to maintaining a healthy diet. However the negative side of the vegetables that I used is that they were not organically grown so this can include pesticides, fossil fuel, and fertilizer. Where if they were grown organically some of the negative side affects of eating vegetable that is not grown organically. The pepper industry is at an all time high crop value at 627.5 million. However as the crop is starting to grow in demand in places like California the need for employees increases as well. So as this continues it causes a lot of issues with undocumented immigrants working for below minimum wage to increase the profit of the pepper sellers. Another social repercussion with the quiche is the half and half at dairy farms the cows are kept in very horrible conditions. It has been shown that they are put in very cramped areas that are many times very dirty and they are not allowed outside. They produce 10 times more milk a day then cows from a decade ago according to the ASPCA. So although quiche may be a better option then some there are some repercussions when eating it.

Personal Reflection:
Through this quarter I have learned a lot about the importance of healthy living and eating. I learned that over 1/3 of the United States is obese or overweight. Every year the rate of obesity is increasing and America has the most obese population compared to any other country. My role in the larger food systems is to raise awareness about the things that are being made in our country and the things that America does that forces it's people to eat very unhealthy things. I could cut caffeine out of my life, because I'm so dependent on caffeine it means that i drink a plot of sugary drinks, soda, and coffee which is very unhealthy for me. Also thinking about meals the week before so that I'm not eating so unhealthy because there's nothing else in the house. The impact of these changes would be that I would feel healthier about myself and that I would be able to do more and probably live longer. I don't think I'm willing to quit caffeine because I love it. We all die eventually and I don't want to live that long anyways.

 ANAYLSIS

Overall, this meal wouldn't be considered the most healthy thing in the world at first glance since ribs aren't particularly healthy. However, it's in the way that they are cooked. By making them in a crock pot and baking them I am taking away some of the unhealthier parts such as the grease and fat that stays on the food from grilling. Also, depending on the rub you use for pork (or beef if you want) it's completely up to you since every ingredient in the rub is completely interchangeable (other than the worcestershire sauce,) it can be sized up to fit any person's diet. While meat isn't always the greatest thing for your body it is an important part of your diet (if you choose to eat meat). Also the main thing people miss with ribs since it's typically a summer grilling food is that you need to eat veggies with it which is what I always do to balance out the meal! You always need to have some green on your plate. So overall i think I would consider this a whole meal or close to it seeing as how you have all of the biggest parts of the food pyramid and what's needed. Meat is good for the body and knowing how to balance it out with veggies makes your diet that much better. Overall, there aren't many if at all preservatives in the rubs (which again, YOU can change to your thing!) so it stays typically healthy.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Looking back on this unit I feel as If I've learned a lot more about myself more than I have about the american diet. While yes, I did learn a lot about the diet and how "food deserts" exist and make it difficult for people to get food. However I've been interested more in the solutions that people have been posting such as the ted talk was giving different solution instead of just listing the problems that we sort of know (or should know) to be true due to the horrible american diet. I would say that my role in the food system would be to just try and make more food instead of buying a bunch of fast foodish stuff. If many people can start to try and give up on fast food or at least ween themselves off it due to the fact it's not healthy companies will begin to go with what the "craze" is and make there food that way. If the "craze" is eating healthy then companies will adapt.

I think that overall the biggest problems with the U.S food system is that it's set up to make us fat. Cheaper foods that take more processing and time to develop cost less money while whole foods you just grow/organic foods cost way more. People aren't willing to pay that extra 20 dollars for organic because they may need it for a bill or something and that's the biggest problem. We are set up for failure. As stated before, I can cook a lot more than I do. That works out well since I've been learning how to cook for college so trying out new recipes at this time to see what's health and good works out perfectly. In all honesty making huge diet changes I'm not particularly fond of but If it helps me in the long run and I see evidence how it will help me I'm willing to try it at least for a month or two.

Quarter 2 Art

During this second quarter in Ms. Hull’s two day art class, everything went great. In this quarter we had to make the following pieces; an art collage, a hand drawn fabric drawing, a depth in field photograph, and a illustration based on a story.   All of the pieces were given 100% of my time and effort, which can clearly be seen through the work. I believe that this quarter has been my best yet. I loved making every single piece because I liked the variety. I also like trying new things, and this quarter was all about that.

My favorite piece from this quarter is definitely the hand drawn fabric I drew. It took me more time than any other piece, which is why I think it’s my favorite. I spent around 5 hours to draw this fabric, every time I didn’t like the way it looked I erased it and fixed it. While drawing this fabric I wanted to show the environment in which the fabric was in. I wanted it to be black and white because I wanted to capture a very old look. I didn’t want any other color on the fabric because it wouldn’t transmit what I wanted it to. When looking into this piece you can experience an old, rusty, but rich touch. I think that capturing the way I wanted it was very hard. Time was definitely on my side.

Baked salmon and Broccoli

Ingredients:

-salmon

-salt and pepper

-different types of seasoning

-olive oil

-green and red peppers

-lemon juice

-Parsley

-garlic clove

-broccoli

-butter

 Process:

1. Rinse the fish off with the lemon juice

2. Season it in separate plate

3. pour oil in the aluminum foil pan and place the fish on it

4. Then out the fish in the oven at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes

5. lightly broccoli in a pot for about 5-10 minutes

7. When cooked sprinkle some salt and pepper with a touch of butter on top

Food Analysis:

I'm not sure where salmon originally comes from, but I know that salmon comes from the latin word salmonand lives in freshwater. The cost of salmon usually ranges from 4-8 dollars a pound depending on where it is bought. Broccoli was introduced from the Italian more than 200 years ago and from then on has been of large production because of it's essential nutrients of fiber, vitamins, carbs, protein and fat. Fresh broccoli usually cost around $1.80- to $2 per pound. Those of which are the essential part of the dish. All the other things such as the seasons, lemon juice and olive oil are pretty cheap as well in any local grocery store, especially walmart.

Regardless of the ingredients baking foods are but more healthier than frying because in frying foods  in all forms frying lead to no water-soluble vitamin loss, and very few heat-sensitive vitamins are lost. It can also lead to a high absorption of added fat and the formation of acrylamide. While baking requires little added fat.  Salmon is an excellent source of high-quality protein, vitamins and minerals. By using healthy oils like olive oil can boost your intake of healthy fats and vitamin E. The estimated time for this dish is about 25 minutes so it's not long of a wait. Broccoli is a good source of carbs and fiber, with 13 grams of carbs and 6 grams of fiber per serving. It helps you feel full faster, which might help you manage your weight. It also helps with prevention of heart disease, diabetes, and diverticular disease. Cooked broccoli is a good source of a number of essential vitamins and minerals that help keep you healthy, including vitamin C, folate and potassium.

Two ingredients that I would compare in my dish would be the salmon and the broccoli. Farming process vs planting or gaining these ingredients re my own would be very hard considering the type of environment that i live in. I live in an urban area so there isn't much of an healthy environment to plant broccoli or an access to a healthy freshwater ocean or lake to fish for salmon. Therefore, the only way to have these things would be to buy them at a local general store.

Personal Reflection:

I rarely had any issues with his unit because this unit was more so as a refresher for me. I learned a lot about the food industries in the 8th grade. Most of the things I already was aware of, but the biggest problem I've seen and that seemed to be new to me was when we watch the video on to talk of the man who was dedicated his life to educating people about the truth behind these things (TED Talk) he said that the labeling in this industry is massively incorrect. He used an example of how companies say that its milk is low in fat when is filled with tons of sugar. Which is something that is very true, but I never really paid attention, something I felt intrigued by. Another thing that caught my attention in this unit was that the maps that we looked over and how the rate in the US of people gain pounds increased over time. I always had a sense that was happening, but I wasn't really aware of how fast and rapid it was going along with how much is spread among the states. An interesting fact brought up in the TED talk video was that the school foods were just about similarly unhealthy like fast food. There aren’t fresh because of the budget cuts which makes them desperate in using the food that they can get, which are the unhealthy foods. I want to and will encourage my little sister and help her to stop eating those foods by packing her lunch before going to school or at night. Inform my mom on this information so that when she buys groceries she can be more mindful of these things. We are huge role in the food industry because we are not only victims of unhealthy foods, but also the consumers and the more we buy the stronger this cycle will become.

My demographics for this rule is to show the audience that it is okay to eat a piece of everything for all components in different types of food is what your body needs, The true problem in that is consuming too much food that your body already has a enough and doesn’t need. Basically there needs to be balance in the food you consume.

"You've Gotta Give 'Em Hope"

Over the past months, I have gathered research about the human rights movement and specifically events surrounding the first openly gay supervisor, Harvey Milk. In this project, I talk a lot about how Harvey Milk started to make the LGBT community known in America and how what he has done more than 30 years ago is still impacting the LBGT movement today.

Here is the link to my final presentation.

The Legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal

Over the past few months I have been conducted researched on the legacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and The New Deal of 1933. I have written two papers covering how the New Deal has not only played a major role in pulling America out of the Great Depression, but transformed the American government and turned it into what it is today. The later of these two essays (here) analyzes the conservative backlash against FDR's New Deal of that time period as well as modern day criticism.

Letters to the real world

Letters were written for many thousands of years, to talk with other people, without them having to be there, to communicate. Now that the modern day is full of new technology, that writing communication system is expended to not only letters, but emails, chats, and notes. In the book Love, Rosie, Cecelia Ahern uses those modern ways people communicate by to make the story more exciting and mysterious.  This formatting of the story made it a little challenging to  read, but that challenge was worth it, because the reader can feel like he or she is a part of the story.

The main two characters, Rosie and Alex, were always write letters to each other since they were little. They write notes like:

“To Alex

You are invited to my 7th birthday party on Tuesday the 8th of April in

my house. We are having a magician and you can come to my house at 2

o’clock. It is over at 5 o’clock. I hope you will come,

From your best friend Rosie”

Their whole world was almost always ink on a piece of paper or letters on  a screen. They were  memories that could be kept, and to the reader it seems that they are using those written pieces of memories to find out about peoples lives. It is easy to relate because people always had to express their deepest feelings on paper, at some point in their lives. There was happiness and sadness, fear and bravery, love and hate. I’m writing you this letter because I know that if I say what I have to say to your face I will probably punch you. I don’t know you anymore. I don’t see you anymore. All I get is a quick text or a rushed e-mail from you every few days. I know you are busy and I know you have Bethany, but hello? I’m supposed to be your best friend.” When Rosie wrought this to Alex, she told him something a lot of people feel. That was both sadness and jealousy. She was feeling normal feelings a friend would. These things make the book seem a lot more like real life. Their lives are never perfect.

The book shows characteristics of each person in their actions and the way they write and also based on whom they are writing to. They all have many problems, in each word they express themselves, just like we do and all of us wright. “I haven’t heard or seen you in a while. I’m sending you this e-mail because every time I call by your house, you’re either in the bath or not there! Should I begin to take this personally??! But knowing you, if you had a problem with me you wouldn’t be too shy to let me know all about it! This was something Alex sent Rosie after he moved to America. They could not see each other so he hoped that they would at least hear each other. There is always a time where people eat here send this kind of message or receive it. It is when you are fighting or one is mad at the other.

Each reader gets a different experience out of a book, but not all are completely different, because a book is meant to inspire emotions. Each emotion is strong enough to stay a stamp in the reader's mind. Looking on others for their thoughts, I stumbled upon this quote from Ellis Henrika, a writer for “Finding Bliss in Books” said: “Except for the epilogue, Love, Rosie is a collection of letters, IMs, notes, emails, text conversations, etc. but the formatting was so horrendous that sometimes two completely different conversations were grouped together, which confused my already unorganised brain.” I agreed, and was also confused at times. The book is funny and interesting, but they always have some problems in them. Without the uniqueness of each book, books would be boring. The author has to make it special by writing uniquely, kind of like special effect in a movie to make it more realistic and more fun.

If the book had been written in a different format, it would be a story that was not that realistic and it would have been more boring and ordinary. It would also less connected to the emotions of the reader. Each of the emotions was not just picked, but more like hand crafted by the author to make sure every detail is perfect. For those reasons the emotions are strong and so realistic. Emotions are the key to unlock our hearts.
