Q2 Art Blog

I felt that this quarter as far as drawing was a real struggle. Although I did my best to try and re create the drawings given I feel like this wans't the best choice for me. I think that I should have definitely made my own project but I did manage to complete all the drawings to the best of my abilities. I think that this had alot to do with paying attention to details and making a lot of things possible. I think next quarter will be a better performance.

Pepper Steak and Onions over White Rice

By Eryn James

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes

Ingredients:  ( 8 - 10 servings)

 • 2 to 3 pounds sirloin steak, cut into thin 2-inch strips

 • 2 onions, sliced into thin slices

 • 2 green bell pepper, sliced into thin slices

 • 2 red bell pepper, sliced into thin slices

 • 2 cup beef broth or 2 cups beef gravy

 • 1/2 teaspoon salt

 • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

 • 1/2 cup cold water

 • 5 cups cooked white rice

Instructions:

  1. In a medium sized frying pan sauté the onions, green and red peppers
  2. In a large baking pan, bake steak for 7-8 minutes on both sides for a well done steak.
  3. While the steak is still in the oven, add the sautéd onions, green and red peppers, salt and pepper to the pan with the steak letting it back for an addition 3-4 minutes.
  4. While the steak is still in the over, pour the 2 cups of beef broth or beef gravy into a pot adding 1/2 cup of water to avoid gravy/broth burning to the pot.
  5. When the steak is done, Cut steak into 1 inch by 1 inch pieces and add to the pot of gravy.
  6. Serve over white rice.

Analysis:

About 9% of the steak used for this recipe is processed and the white rice used for this recipe is 27% processed. So 85% of this meal is processed. I used about 5 and a half 6 ounce steaks for this recipe which resulted in about 1,914 calories with 58 calories per ounce. For 5 cups of white rice, there was 1,335 calories with 267 calories per cup. There are 140 calories in 3 cups of green peppers, red peppers, and onions, with 1 cup of green peppers having 30 calories, 1 cup of red peppers having 46 calories and 1 cup of onions having 64 calories. There are about 3389 calories in this entire mean. In one serving there are between 340 and 424 calories. So, eating this mean constantly could cause you to gain weight and because of the rice in the dish, could eventually cause diabetes.

I think my rice came the farthest because I know that a lot of Americas rice comes from Japan. This entire meal costed $26.47. Comparing that to fast food, I know that 2 cheese steak platers from the pizza store on 52nd and Girard cost $19.75 and thats only for 2 servings of food but for only $6.72 more, I can feed 6 - 8 more people. From watching the video in class, I know that the steak used for my dish went through a long, violent, inhuman process. It was raised, very improperly, and killed by the masses where they’d skin them then cut the meat from the various parts of the cow. Not much happens after that except for packaging and shipping what used to be a living animal.

Personal Reflection

During this unit I’ve learned a lot about healthiness and obesity. About how poverty effects who is afford the foods need to be healthy. There are a lot of things that effects peoples ability to be healthy and I’ve concluded that you have to be the start of change in your life.

I know that if unhealthy fast food restaurants don’t maintain business they will eventually go out of business and some people strive to stop the fast food chains that are making more and more people obese. My role in the larger food system is that of the person who is trying to move fast food restaurants, if not out of business period, out of neighbor hoods where majority of people eat and live unhealthy lives. I don’t purchase food from the leading fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Wendy’s and Burger King. I know that a lot of people have a hard time eating better because there are so many fast food restaurants and they make their food affordable to even the poorest people, which ultimately keep them in business.

Some changes that I could change to my food choice is try not to eat any bread or anything that is not low to fat free. I could also eat less snacks during the day. I know that those snacks are only healthy if I bring them from home and when I don’t I eat from the school store and buy chips or air heads instead of having a piece of fruit or pretzels. I could also   try to eat more home cooked meals instead of ordering. I order when it’s too late and I am too tired to cook so i should eat dinner a few hours before bed time so that I can try to burn as many calories before I fall asleep because you dont burn calories while your sleep.

The impact of these changes are weight loss, a better diet, and a healthier future. I would benefit so much from this new diet if I keep it strick and not cheat on days when I just feel like something else. I would have to fight the urge to eat the salty and sweet foods that aren’t good for me. I am willing to make these changes and plan to starting the week of January 27th because I know a healthier me is a happier me.

Q2 Graphic Design Artwork

This quarter I worked on my own typeface. It's called "Not Applicable" the logo for the font is below. The N and A are also 2 of the letters I'm most proud of, the N shows the simplicity side of the font while the A shows the simplistic elegance of it. The designas I mentioned reflects my love of simplicity but yet it still has enough substance to be elegant. The elegance is brought in because of the "barbs" (the half serifs attached to some letters), these "hold down" the letters solidifying them to the page instead of having them disappear.  So far only the lowercase version of the font is complete (shown below). The lowercase has less barbs than the uppercase font does, I wanted the lower case letters to flow better and be more simplistic being held down by the weight of the uppercase font. A preview of the uppercase version of the font is below.

Q2

This quarter I decided to embark in the challenge of recreating a project I attempted to complete, but never finished two years ago. The project consists of creating a poem, because I'm not the best at drawing, enlarge it then spray paint it on the windows in the classroom.

The way to do this is the following:
Create the poem
Print out the poem after you figure out the conversion from inches to points.
Then cut out each individual letter creating a stencil using a box cutter.

Ms.Hull and I then realized it would be way cooler to print out each word rather than letters and on colored paper using different fonts. I am going to try to complete this project by the end of the Third quarter, I am very excited to see the final results. Every different method we try is a learning lesson so hopefully this one is a winner. I am glad I decided to tackle this project again my senior year, it gives my class something to be proud of and remember.

Todd Samuel's Blog #2: Brain Cancer

Brain tumors are one of every one out of one hundred cancers diagnosed in just the United States every year. These being the most deadly tumors because there is no room for it to go inside of your skull. Which in turn causes the cancer to spread which is the most fatal part to having this kind of cancer. The person in which I had initially done this blog on has since passed it is going on almost a month now since the passing of my friend’s dad. It was most painful to watch someone die so slow over the course of a year. It was probably even more painful for him knowing that he was also going away and he watched his family and friends try to do anything to save him. In fact there was nothing anyone could do at all. The chances of him even surviving this illness were slim to none already.

Most of what I am writing is based off of opinion since I witnessed first hand what it was like to see someone going through such a painful illness. The entire time he expressed that he just wanted to live which was horrible to hear because he was in fact begging for something that no one could aside from make him comfortable and wait around until that one day where everything shuts down because your body is so sick of fighting. I recall him asking for constant pain medication and something to make this headache go away. Later, the cancer had officially spread through his entire body which made everyone give up hope.  I was unaware at exactly how fatal this form of cancer was and why once it had spread they let him come home. I was numb to the fact that this deadly strain of cancer which most people do not survive was killing him and once someone is gone you can not get them back.

I tend to take a more opinionated stance on this subject because it directly affected me. I look at the facts and understand them but at the same time I feel like for all cancer it is really a matter of luck whether you survive or not because it is so rough on the body it really takes a toll on the whatever organs it decides to spread to next leaving the body weak; so weak that you cannot even perform surgery on it to directly go after where the cancer is. The entire idea of cancer is tricky, especially brain cancer. This is scary because he was perfectly healthy the cancer essentially came out of no where. One out of twelve people in my survey knew/know someone who has had cancer.

Types of cancer brought up in the survey were brain, breast, and lung; along with other cancers which were listed under “other”. 80% of people who did know someone with a form of cancer did not not survive. Eight out of twelve people said they would be open to donating money to cures for cancer of all sorts. Eight out of twelve people have also never donated to cures for cancer, but would be open to doing it. Finally one out of twelve people said that cancer has had an impact on their life.

Alysha's Q3 Art

Here are some drawings I have done for the Q3. As you can see I'm not a artists on some points but with practice i became better. You can see the difference between my first times to my later on; I learned that art is not just something you draw but more of a creative thing any eye can imagine. Heres a few drawings I was able to capture at the time the rest are in my drawing book. Enjoy " )

For this quarter, I really focused on shading and I think, I successfully drew my drawings which included shading to give objects their real shape and look. For next quarter I would be focusing on drawing hairs and fur to learn difficult levels of shading.

Q2 art

For this quarter I wanted to try something new. I decided to make my very own fashion design. I did not sketch it on paper, but made a keynote where I would record my bust size, waist size, etc.

Bust: 33"
Waist: 29"

I would be making a shirt, I took a course over the summer at Moore College or Art and they taught me how to make my own clothes. My first step was to the go to fabric store and pick out the type of fabric that I would like to use. I chose to make the shirt a slingy fall off the shoulder type because I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do the measurements correctly since it was my first item of clothing that I would be trying to do all by myself, without anyone telling me what was right and what was wrong. That was the funnest thing about completing this item of clothing (although it's way too small for me) was that I was doing it all on my own. Anyway, I went to the fabric store and bought a plain black cotton fabric (which I have never worked with because it's pretty flimsy.
I came home and got to cutting. First, I traced the outline of how big around I wanted the shirt to be (I wanted it a little bit loose so I cut the shirt out 37 inches around and 7 inches down). Next, I made sure to trace where the sleeves would be.
Next, I cut the entire thing out.
Next, I went to the ironing board and folded one inch over the edge of the shirt, this is to make sure that the shirt looks clean, neat and even, meaning if I didn't cut accurately enough it would just fold over and look nice. I did this to every edge of the shirt and ironed it over to a fold. Once they were all folded over, I went to the sewing machine and sewed the places that I had just folded, (using black string). I could have done a design with the sew, but I decided to just do a straight line to be safe.
After this was done, I went to the iron once again and overlapped the two pieces (so that it looked like an entire wrap around shirt) I overlapped them and then folded them over, making sure it was on the side of the shirt so that it couldn't be seen when I wore it. I sewed the short together and put it on.
It kind of sucks, but it is still cool because it's my first ever alone piece!

Quarter 2: a1 Art Class

This quarter we spent learning about perspective and the different ways to value a face and make objects come to life in our artwork. We got down to the basics. I really wanted to take the option of an independent study because I love to take pictures in film. The classic factor of using the dark room to develop my photos is very fulfilling. Much of my artwork was done at home because I have trouble focusing on my art during class. I don't color in any of my artwork because I believe it sometimes takes away from the raw-ness of the pencil drawings. The classical beauty of what the final product was meant to be.
