REFLECTION -

When it came to picking a certain topic to focus on I knew I wanted to think of What If with segregation or anything relating to the civil rights movement. Once it came down to picking a more solid topic I came across the Brown V. Board Of Education case. I remembered studying it during my ILP last year with the Marshall Brennan program and I knew I would be able to create a very solid project with this topic. The easiest part to me was picking what i could change, my divergence point. For this I chose to prevent the death of Fred Vinson. In this case many people believe that his death was a major factor in the final decision taken. Many believe that if he hadn't suddenly died segregation in schools would have continued. So of course I knew that making that my point of divergence would allow me to create a very solid final project.
Once the researching came up I was having trouble focusing on certain things. In the beginning I didn't really think of sources that would help me with the final project I was spending time just looking for sources about segregation. Of course these were some kind of help but later on in the process I found myself trying to find other sources that would help more with the topic.Even though at first I had trouble with finding my primary resources once I got a sense of what I wanted and needed I found plenty of useful materials. Pictures,Articles as we all a Documentary.

When it came down to determining how to present it I had a hard time choosing the final medium for this. At first I wanted to create a simple wiki spaces. Which then I realized that it would be too plain and I wouldn't be able to do much with it. I also later had the idea of making a weebly but I also wanted to be able to post the intro to the mock documentary I made and with weebly that wasn't possible. While I was thinking of a clever way to present this I came about a link to a project created by Christian Gelbolingo in Mr.Hermans history class. Once I realized that creating a website on this site was what I was looking for i got started right away. I found it difficult to get use to all the setting and what not but later on found myself enjoying the challenge. Compared to other sites it offered more then just a way to make a website but it allowed me to make it more appealing to my audience. Even though its a simple theme I still find it more appealing then a simple wiki space or a weebly. Not only that but I was also able to include the video I had directly on the website.

Through out the whole process I was trying to find a way to organize it as well so it could flow and not be confusing. I decided to present the disclaimer and the introduction to the project as the first thing seen on the website. I then move on to including background story of what the case was about and the i start to slowly flow into the What If part of it all. In my opinion I include a lot of visual appealing aspects, very few writting but I keep it informative. Overall I am very proud of all the work I put into the researching, into the creation of my own primary sources as well as the creation of the final website.

When we first picked our country we knew that Elisa’s father had connections in Venezuela. After asking him to contact them and give us their emails, we informed them about our project and what exactly we needed from them. We emailed them the questions that we needed answered. Luckily one of the contacts had a child that was happy to help, they interviewed people on behalf and emailed us the product. Below is the transcripts in english, of all of the interviews.

LON1920
                                                    Reflection

The point of divergence that I choose was to make the Union loose the Battle of Antietam. This caused Lincoln to not have enough power to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Changing this point in history only held things up rather than changed them. The League of Nations came in and enforced equality in 1920 as a result of the Union loosing the Battle of Antietam.
The future I envisioned resulting from the POD was a whole different thing than I got. I expected that the world would still have slaves and that we wouldn't have Obama in presidency and it was a whole lot more dramatic then what it actually came out to be. I figured that if I got rid of the Emancipation Proclamation, that the world would be how it looked in the 1870's. It turns out that even without Abe Lincoln issuing the Proclamation, the League of Nations would have jumped in and declared freedom for the slaves.
I had the most fun putting all of my sources together. When I wrote it all out, it finally made sense and was in some kind of order. My favorite part was closing up my wikispaces page and getting this done. The hardest part might have been making the fake primary sources because I didn't know how to actually make a source. Creating your own newspaper clipping is harder than I thought it would be! The most interesting fact had to have been that Abe Lincoln had to wait for a Union win to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. I would have thought that since he was president that he would be able to do whatever and be able to keep that power.
The actions of each individual effects the history because if you change one point, it dominoes and changes multiple other events in history also. You cannot just erase or swap history and expect nothing to change. Even with an end result that is similar to how life is now, the history behind it has been changed. One decision can be majorly influential to the historical landscape. For example, the decision to make the Union win the Battle of Antietam changed the outcome of major historical events.
I could improve this project by making the website more colorful and eye catching. If I had to do this project over, I would change the way I made the wikispace. I would add more links and make it more wikipedia like.

Nobody Knows The Real Me

This piece was something I did one day I was feeling playful. I wanted to use different size brushes as well as different techniques. It all started out with me just painting pretty lines on the paper and it turned into me trying to do something different and something that was about who I really am.

Beauty Comes Naturally

When it comes to capturing moments I am most proud of this one. A while ago I took this picture of roses my mom had in our living room. Recently on a boring night I decided to try something different with this one picture and see what would come of it. Like above in the picture there are 3 different versions of the same picture, the biggest one being the original one. Even though both of the edited versions are gorgeous I find it amazing that regardless the original picture of the rose at its natural state with no effects of any sort, still managed to outshine the other two.

Masquerade Beauty

This was one of the first pieces in the quarter when I actually tried and opened myself up to create art again. It started out with a simple mardi gras mask and after a while I just started having fun with the few color pencils I had. When I realized that small idea of a mardi gras mask turned into my FAVORITE piece this quarter !

Legalize LOVE

When it came to making this piece I knew I wanted to keep it simple but at the same time make it something with a deep meaning. I became inspired when I watched the documentary Max & Sam made for NHD. So I began by finding a creative way to draw a heart and ended up having a tribal style heart. I fell in love with the first half of it. The second half however it was something even more simple, compared to the first half this was one full piece. Nothing like the first half which was sort of like a puzzle. When it came to adding color I decided to have different colors representing both sides of Love. One side is a mixture of bright happy colors. While the other side is red and black to symbolize Pain & Lost.

Tiger Print Crazy

This was one of my most simple pieces the whole quarter. One weekend while driving back from NY I pulled out my drawing pad and began to sketch things of the top of my head until I got a more solid idea. When it came down to it I began to sketch tiger print all over one of my pages.Once I got in the art studio the following week I decided to add color by adding pastels to it to be able to add texture and more feeling to it.

Observation Drawings - Landscape Rodin Museum

Instead of going to the Landscape, we stayed in class room and looked around. I looked at my friend book bag. I drew what I seen. I added creativity, and some style. I tried to be as accurate as possible. I used paint and pastel, to make the effect better. This wasn’t to hard, It was an ok project. I didn’t like this art that I did, but it’s not that bad.

Observation Drawing - Close up drawing Mutter Museum Garden

This Project was most interesting I did such a great job on it. Instead of going outside to look at the Mutter Museum Garden, we just looked outside the window. I looked across the street from the art studio, and seen a beautiful brown, orange, and white curtain. I drew everything, it had in it. From the pattern to the exact colors. I used paint at first and didn’t like it at all. I thought it looked normal, no extra flare or creativity. So I started to add chalk. Brown, orange, and white chalk. The picture started to pop, and became something extraordinary. One of the best pieces I drew all year.

Abstraction Motion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”) Choose a motion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph

Well if you read my other Blog post, Abstract emotion, I talked about how weird abstraction is to me. So now I have to create a piece with abstract motion. The piece I drew was a bed of flowers blowing in the wind. I used pencil first to outline and sketch flowers, I made it look like they were blowing. I added creativity to it and lots of colors. I colored the piece in with pastel. The piece came out very interesting and I loved the motion picture. It took 3 hours to create this piece. Sometimes I be so surprised in the work that come out afterwards simply because with abstract you just draw how you feel.

Abstraction Emotion - any size (not smaller then 8-11”) Choose an emotion and create a painting/drawing/collage/photograph

Ms. Hull gave me this assignment, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to do and how to do it. Abstract, I know it had to do with colors and how I feel, but it’s a hard process. I took this assignment and tried to be different think of something new. I think that is what abstract emotion is. So I grabbed different sizes of paper, and started to draw anger, sadness, and happiness. I drew with pastel and paint.  I added my extra flavor to it and tried to incorporate my art style into it. By me being so nervous and weird when I got the assignment, I didn’t put my full effort. I had doubts about my work and how I felt.

This 4th quarter went differently; I started off drawing but that transitioned to working with Music. I improved in mastering shading with my Abstract emotion drawing. I tried making the lips as realistic as possible, as well as the nose. I didn't do such a great job on the other facial features but I tried my best on doing so. Working with music was super fun. I'n to record. Recording was a fun experience and also gave me headaches. After running ve had a passion for music since I was in my mother's womb, but I've never had ambitiothrough the song once, I'd listen to the recording and find a mistake. I'd have to record many times until I came to find a recording I was satisfied and was clean from mistakes.

What If Benchmark

For this benchmark I created a fake news site with articles as my primary sources. My POD was using the original copy of the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. This copy included a paragraph about slavery. Check out how it changed the future here!

Reflection:

During the Revolutionary War the Declaration of Independence was written. The copy that effects us today, however, was not the first or original copy of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote the first copy and in this he included a debatable paragraph that discussed slavery. For this project I decided to change history so that the original copy was used. Due to the fact that the south was all for slavery, they were not in agreement with the Declaration. In an alternate history they were so displeased that they separated themselves from the north and sided with the King of Britain.

What I liked about this project was the fact that I got to dictate what I wanted to happen. Based on my research I could create a reasonable alternate reality. What was difficult however was coming up with a situation that would really make a difference. The original idea that had was to effect the history of slavery by ending the life of Harriet Tubman. Automatically I assumed that this would rid history of the underground railroad but then it was brought to my attention that someone other that Harriet Tubman could have created the underground railroad or something similar. Another difficult thing was creating the articles (the primary sources). Often times I felt that I was being very repetitive and at a lost of what to write. I wanted to change history but not so much that I confused myself and come up with an unreasonable outcome.

I think that history itself is based on the actions of an individual or group. Without people trying to solve problems in history or standing up for what they belief there is no history. Systemic changes are a result of the individuals effect on history. Often times I think systemic changes are hyped up more in history. This is not to say they aren't important though. I didn't realize until this project that if a simple decision wasn't made in the past, it in fact could have change my life completely at the moment. Usually I think of history as a set thing, I never thought about changing it.

I think that with this project we had a lot of freedom of choice, we chose the topic, what type of primary sources, and how we wanted to present it. Now that I'm done with the project I think that it was a good idea to handle the project the way it was handled. I don't really have any improvements that I could suggest. But if I had to do this project over I definitely would have spend more time finding a topic that interest me more instead of picking the first one.

Q4 Art Charles Norman

This quarter in art I actually participated in class. I have to say this class was not bad at all. I am not a great artist, but I did enjoy trying to draw some pictures. This quarter I did two hours of art work for each grading week. I started of by drawing logos of all of the Philly teams. I felt good about it. I ended of the Quarter making a football stadium. I tried to incorporate football with this class. I had fun this quarter drawing, and painting my artwork.

Brianna Perrin Q4 What If?

My point of divergence is figuring out how technology and how much impact the world would be in if Bill Gates never had contact with his first computer? The future that I envisioned resulting from the POD is making the future more advanced. From not having Microsoft created, most of the advance technological things that we have would not exist and the big companies projects would be as updated as they would be. For example Apple with touch screen phones or XBOX 360 and other game consoles. What I liked about the project was that we were able to think and research about a topic that we always wondered about and asked questions about. What was challenging was finding out actually information that can back us up with what we decided to research. Also with trying to make what we decided to change, how will it impact the present. The most interesting fact that I investigated was that Bill Gates and another person helped create the basic coding of Microsoft. Also that big companies like Apple and Radioshack used it when it first came out for their products. The actions of individuals impact the historical record tremendously. What might be a small change in history can change the whole outlook of the future. For example what if Benjamin Franklin didn't have access to create a key or learning about the foundation of physics to launch the kite in the sky. How this project could be improved is probably putting more effort into my creativity side because I feel as though newspaper articles and a cartoon isn't as creative and showing my abilities as best as they can. If I had to do this project over what I would change about my process is how much time I spend using my resources. I know I should use all of my primary sources to my advantage but I didn't use them as effectively as I would like. Or maybe I did and I just doubt my self.
