Bryanna's Negative Space

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space between object/parts in a picture

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

In my cut out I found my negative space by separating my darker areas on my paper to my light areas. Then using construction paper to mimic  that outline. Once I did that I just placed the cut out pieces on one side and the whole pieces on the other. On my chair drawing I just found the space in between the chairs, stool, and caution sign.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps the artist determine what perspective the picture needs to be drawn from. (bird’s eye, eye level, and worm’s eye

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Seeing negative space enhances the drawing by bring out the details and thing that should be seen as 3 dimensional can be enhanced

Audrey's negative and positive space art.

What is a Negative Space?
A negative space is the background of a color that makes the art stand out. For example, such as in my art below, if you look at the right side the negative space is the blue outline and positive space is the green.

Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
I figured out negative when I understood how the color in the background makes the shadow of the art work stand out. In my stool drawing, I noticed when I shade in the shadows between the stools' legs, it makes the stool pop out and make itself notice that it's a stool.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
So the artist will be able to let their viewers see the subject of the entire work better.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Yes, seeing the negative space does enhance the drawing. Because when the negative space enhances, the positive space shows up. And the positive space is the object/SUBJECT of the entire art work.

(Do you notice how I am missing a root of the tree on the left side of the drawing? lol, oops.)

Positive & Negative Reflection

What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

- Negative space is a dark space around the image.

Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

-In my cut out i saw my negative space by looking at the dark spaces.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

- It helps them to see just the pictures and not the dark spaces around.

Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

-yes because it easier for the drawing to stand out.

True Negative Space

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it) Negative spacing is the spacing between the object you are drawing. The area around the thing you are drawing creates the art for you.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing? I found the negative spacing in the cut out using the paper. I didn't really see the negative space in the stool drawing.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It could help an artist if they can see negative space because it will become easier to draw because the background will create some of the drawing.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not Seeing negative space does help drawing because it can put more definition in a drawing.

Negative Space Reflection.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

- negative space is spaces between , or around an object.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

-The way i found negative space is listening to what ms. hull said. she said that we have to use everything and it had to be those to colors.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

-it helps an artist to see whats there. which parts are important and what you should really focus on.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

- i think it does enhance drawing because it makes the picture look more interesting.

Negative and Positive Space

IMG_0762
IMG_0762
A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative Space is when you shade in the blank parts of your drawing, usually where nothing is. Like in a drawing of a chair, in between the legs would be shaded, and that is considered negative spave.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

I found negative space in my stool drawing, by shading in the parts of the stool that have nothing there, like in between the legs of the stool. I found negative space in my cut out because I saw the dark parts of the bird, and I cut them out, because that is what you had to trace, and  cut out to make the cut out.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see negative space, because it helps the artist tell which part of the drawing is real, and can be touched, and what part is just air.
D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
Yes, seeing negative space enhances drawings, because they look more professional, and it helps the person looking at the drawing, to see what is air, and what is not.

Negative Space - Angelina Pingitore

Negative space is part of a image were space surrounds an object in a image

How I found my Negative space is seeing the dark parts on my cut out and using it as a shadow.

It helps the artist because it is easer to see the dark space as not part of the image and as a shadow .

Yes because it is easer to draw seeing the negative space it makes your image "pop"

¿Qué es la vida diaria?

I went on sharedtalk and talked to someone named Alexander Tropa. He lives in Argentina and is 17 years old. I mainly asked him about his daily life, which is quite like the life here, and then we had an interesting conversation about Facebook, but that was mainly in English, so I didn't include most of it.

  • Post-Conversation

·       I spoke with 2 persons originating from Spain on the language learning website. One named Karl Relher and the other named David Suarez.

·       I haven’t asked so many questions about the person’s life rather than the language. I focused on learning how to say a few quality jokes in Spanish as well as learn the types of jokes are used.

·       This conversation benefited me in many ways. I tended to think about what type of conversation I will most likely have in the future and humor is my field of interest. Knowing jokes in Spanish will be an icebreaker for meeting new people.

·       I did not think I would find quality jokes from these conversations but they turned out to be pretty funny.

·       I would need to improve on asking what I want to know with proper grammar. It seems that many of the people were confused of what I was asking for. Conversation Partners:

Sierra Dinvil's blog post :]

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I chose to speak with my best friend Prisilla Nieves. I chose to speak with her because she's really good at explaining Spanish concepts to me. Also she is fluent in Spanish.

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned a lot about her family background and history. Things that I would not have known if it wasn't for this project. Also, I learned how to be more polite in conversation.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Since I know Prisilla so well, she was really easy to communicate with and easy to understand. She was able to clarify concepts that I misunderstood and to explain things to me from her perspective (so one who speaks spanish on a daily basis)

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well with using spanish throughout the entire conversation (except for when I need her to explain something). I didn't think I would be capable of doing so.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I need to improve on knowing when to use certain words to be more polite instead of the ones that I use already.

My Attempt to Converse Without Word Reference

How can I maintain a conversation and communicate my ideas without having to use Word Reference to look up words to use?

Pre:

¿Qué tal?

¿Donde vive?

¿Como está el tiempo?

¿Como está la comida?

I'm nervous to just simply not use word reference. I rely on it so much because there are so many words I just don't know. This is going to be very difficult for me.

Post:

Frazer-Ireland pero vive en Londres

Javier- Spain

I had a good time with who I talked with. Frazer was really cool because he lived in London and I had just visited. If I messed up a bit he didn't mind since he spoke English. Javier was cool because he would correct me nicely, whereas I've had some people correct me sort of meanly. I learned that they both loved paella, which funnily enough I first tried in London.

This helped me a lot. It was sort of nice not having to rely on the dictionary. It was difficult but it forced me to only rely on the knowledge I have. My grammar of course still needs improvement and just generally expanding my vocab but doing this I'm already learning words.

Ruben R.

Who did I speak to and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Ruben R. He lives in Spain and I talked to him through sharetalk. I found it to be an easy way to communicate, and he is 17 so he is my age which made it easier to talk to him.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that Ruben is trying to learn english because he finds that learning other languages are useful. I also found out that he likes Real Madrid and his favorite player is Benzema. He also found it to be weird that I take a class for spanish.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
I feel as though this interaction with Ruben was helpful in a sense that we are both trying to learn different languages, and we shared a common interest, soccer.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I guess what I did well was being able to interact with him without using much english. I used a little english since he is obviously trying to learn as well, but for the most part i used spanish.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

There was one instance where i had said something that could have been said a different way, and he explained to me that it is different, which was nice because it was like he is aiding me in my process of learning a new language.

I spoke with Javier Marquez from Bogota Spain. I chose to speak with him because he seemed pretty good at English and Spanish so he could help me with both.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that he is from Spain and he likes an artist named Pablo. Their music is pretty col and I enjoyed the interaction.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I became more confident and he helped improve my grammar.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I improved in learning the culture and grammar.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rc

My grammar could be a little better. When I asked about music he said it was "es" instead of "son"

GOOOOOOOOAL

To be honest, I didn't chat with anyone in live mocha or any other sites with chatting things. I did this because I know that if use the chatting method, I will be tempted to copy paste it in google translate. So I decided to speak to a person. Just like the Verizon telemarketer. It was really funny and lets say a bit awkward but he helped me a lot and he was really patient with me.

I didn't chat with anyone but I talked to my boyfriend who can speak fluently in Spanish and English. It was hilarious at first because we dont know what to talk about in Spanish. But then when we started to speak, it went on and on and on. It was actually nice because I know that if I chat with people and I don't know what they are talking about, I have the tendency to go to Google Translate to figure it out. But when we were talking, I dont have my computer with me and I cant translate it. So I have lets say a good practice with him because I actually learn more than just reading it. It was a nice practice to me because he also helped me with some vocabularies and helped me structure the sentence properly. It was also not awkward because I already know him and we don have to break the ice or some sort of thing. However, it was really hard and awkward when I started to talk to his mom. His mom cannot speak in English and only speak fluent and old Spanish. I'm still like a toddler when I speak Spanish and she speak really fast and use vocabularies that I dont even know of. It was hard but we kind of manage to communicate. I was really nice :)

About the skills that I want to improve on, I guess I'm almost there. I'm not a master already but I noticed that little by little, I'm getting there. The skills that I need to improve on is not an over night kind of development. I still need a lot of practice. I still stutter and have some hard time trying to find the right word but I noticed that I dont use english words as much as I used to. So kudos for that!

Who did I speak with and why did I chose that person?

- I spoke with my boyfriend because it was easier for me than talking to a random stranger and being all awkward.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

- We pretty much talked about the weather and food. He likes rainy weather because it makes him sleepy. I also learned how to structure my sentences the right way.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
- This helped me a lot because the conversation was not awkward and it was easy to talk about. The vocabularies that I needed to the conversation is already well known, so yea. It was pretty nice.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
- The not stuttering and spacing out. I actually did well on that. I use my hands to express what I want to say too much though but I think that's fine.

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Belén Belli, because she is around my age (19) and I thought it would make a good conversation

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned about her taste in music and different ways of phrasing what I wanted to say ( correctly).
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It worked out pretty well, my goal was to keep a conversation going and it was pretty nice.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

Ask questions and make comments to keep up the conversation, always have something to talk about.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)rc

Phrasing basically, and using the wrong words, as you can see in the chat.

Proyecto de Conversación

Carlos N. from Spain

Who did I speak to and why did I choose that person?

I spoke to Carlos N. who lives in Spain from ShareTalk because I was just looking to speak to someone my age and he happened to be the only person online in my age group.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned that Carlos was a typical Philly kind of kid. He went to school and would just hang out with friends, but he's more studious that a majority of the city.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

I don't think it really seemed helpful because I can't carry out conversations fluidly with strangers. In a way, I asked so many questions, it seemed like I was an online surveyor telemarketer person.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I guess the thing I did well was ask a lot of questions, I just couldn't make small talk out of it.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

The one thing I need to work on it making it flow well like an actual conversation rather than just saying "De donde eres?" then waiting for their response only to reply with another question.

Proyecto de Conversation (First Week)

First Week: 4/20/12

Iraidia

Philadelphia, US

Who you spoke with and why you chose that partner

I spoke with Iraidia because I wanted to talk to someone I was comfortable with to start this project off.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I did not learn much about her, but she tried to teach me some common words like cuál is what, and maybe is quizá.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goals?

This interaction helped make me a tiny bit more relaxed with the language and also taught me some new words.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations? What specifically to you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

One of my goals was confidence and working with a friend who was good at Spanish helped. I still have a lot of work to do and Iraidia was teasing me kindly about my use of the Spanish language since it is still quite choppy. I need to talk to more people outside of school because I will be speaking to people I can learn more about.

Proyecto de Coversacion 1

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with girl from Barcelona, Spain. I chose to speak with her at random. She was the first name to appear on the list when I logged onto SharedTalk.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

In this conversation I learned that she enjoys the same type of music as me and she also likes to vist the tourist locations in Barcelona.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

My goal was to improve my ability to respond quickly and maintain the flow of conversation. Talking with Kathlyn, I found it easy to keep up with what she was saying. She spoke in a way that felt normal for me.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I did well with being able to reply without hesitation and finding things to talk about .
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

I think I need to work on not relying so much on WordRefrence. I used it a lot and it slowed the conversation at times.

Antes de Conversación:

What will your topic of conversation be?
My topic will most likely be about animals and their habitats.

What are you looking forward to about this conversation?
I am really looking forward to enhancing my spanish speaking abilities, and understanding what the culture is like in different countries.

What are your nervous about?

I am really nervous that my grammar and spelling will be inaccurate.

Después de Conversación:

Who did you speak with and why did you choose them?
I honestly spoke with a random native speaker on the internet.

What did you learn about them?
I learned that the two people I talked with both liked animals and both of their favorite ones were dogs.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your goal?
This interaction increased my confidence with speaking spanish.

What did you do well according to your goals?
One thing that I did well according to my goals was keeping a conversation going.

What specifically do you need to improve on?
I specifically need to improve on my conjugating.

Grammar

I've assigned myself to multiple people that matched the description of the people that I wanted to socialize with and could help me out properly on the website Conversation Exchange.  Luckily I chose people who get on the site regularly and responded back to me quickly but many of them required for me to have skype which doesn't work well on my computer. So I had to ask to either do email or ichat. Not many of them were able to get back to me except for 2. Edward, and Kleber. For both people, they help me out with my Spanish and I help them improve their English. So it's kind of like a win-win situation.

For the conversations that I had with both of them were mainly introductory things and helping out with little things. Below is the first screenshot I took of Edward and I's first conversation. The second is a screenshot of the email Kleber and I are sending each other.

Proyecto de Conversación - Jessica Hinton

Partner: Alex. Bogota, Columbia (LiveMocha)
  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with someone on LiveMocha. His name is Alex. I didn't really have anyone else to speak to. The person I wanted to speak with, wasn't available, so I spoke with him.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

We spoke about music for most of the conversation. So, I learned about his music preference.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

Well, because I didn't know him, I was a little nervous. So, there were times during the conversation where I was making dumb mistakes. But, it helped me to realize, that I should be confident about using spanish.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I was able to hold a conversation. We spoke spanish for the entire conversation, unless I needed clarification.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

Like I stated above, I was making dumb mistakes. Like using "mucha" instead of "mucho" during one part in the conversation. So, I should be aware of the words I'm using, and where I use them.

Espanol blog de Tenzin Ngawang1

  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

    - I spoke with my friend, Andora Myftaraj because she is a native spanish speaker and she is from Albania. I chose her for this assignment because we never talked in spanish before even when she speaks fluent spanish!

  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

    - I didn't learn anything about her per se because we did most of the things together this weekend. What I learned from her was that when you're talking in spanish, you really have to try and that avoiding google translators really helps and enables you to realize how much you really know.

  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

    -
My personal goal was to keep a conversation going. I think I tried my best to keep that conversation because I asked as many questions as I could think of during that time. My other personal goal was to have a better pronunciation but that didn't happen because my conversation was on iChat. However, that's definitely going to be my next personal goal.

  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

    - I think I did well at asking questions like I said earlier and I believe I tried my best at using the right 'ser' form at points, like we've learned in earlier quarter. I also think I did well at understanding and writing even without using translator or wordreference.

  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)

    - I realized after that when asking question, I forgot to put the upside down question in the front, like we usually do in class. After the talk, my friend and I started talking in english; reflecting on my way of speaking spanish and she said that some of the things I said were a little awkward but overall was good.

Goal: My first goal is to talk about the weather with someone who is from a different country.
  • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
-I spoke to Cecilia from Mexico because she was the first person to respond to my chat.
  • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned alt about her and what Mexico is like. I also learned some more basic qualitys as well as a website to help with spanish.
  • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
It helped me be more confident as well as learn some basic conversation starters.I also learned what mistakes I made and what I need to work on.
  • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I did well with basic conversations and talking about Philadelphia as well as limiting my amount of using the word SI.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
Try to limit my amount of english. Be more constant with my languages.
