Animal Cruelty Blog Post #1

I would introduce this project by saying that animal cruelty is just wrong. It is wrong because you are hurting innocent animals and they could possibly be hurt themselves. These animals need to be treated with care and with love not with torture. People have to think animals are like people because people and animals might live the same lives like homeless people and harmed, sickly animals. This is what my focus is on in this project because I will like to help these animals stay alive and not dead. I am interested in this because I will want to make a change in these animals lives. The research will follow on how these animals were treated.

My research that I’ve found was that 32% of kids around the  world have murdered their pets. People who are hurting their pets are most likely hurting the people around them. Because of neglect, these animals die. Houses or the ASPCA are some of the shelters these animals can stay and live at to survive. We should provide a change and help them.

There should be more public awareness for these types of crimes. There are passive and active acts of abusing them. Passive acts are letting them suffer and active acts are non-accidental injuries. This is one of the high major factors around the world. Doing harm like this could really endanger the environment.

These animals need urgent medical care. The people who are under animal cruelty, have broken the Laws of Endangerment. These animals are treated somewhat like humans. We go through poverty and they could easily be homeless like we do. Thousands of reports have gone unreported. $46 billion have been spent to save these animals. Giving vaccines and medicines to the animals has helped them a lot. I wonder if I can help them one day.

What I am wondering about is if these animals will be helped. These animals did nothing wrong. Just look at them. They were being tortured by their owners and never even got a chance to breathe or eat because of them. I question that why don’t other people who love these animals help them sooner and faster. As I go more deeper into this project, I hope to learn and find out that all these that animals will be helped. JUST LOOK AT THEIR FACES!!! IT TELLS IT ALL!!! I support these opinions to do what is right in our environment.

Sexual Assault in Africa

Hello, my name is Sophie De Oliveira. I go to the wonderful school of Science Leadership Academy. I am a creative, effectual,15 year old. Today i am going to tell you about most intriguing, interesting, and familiar topic I have come across. Not only have I learned more about it in my research recently, but I have been taught varieties of things on this topic ever since i was in middle school. Mostly in my social studies class, and now in my African American History class.

My issue/Topic:

I am going to research on the issue of Rape. Not just any random rape,  Rape in Africa. Specifically on a certain case. I will broaden my research to other tragic sexual harassment cases. It may be known on the news, or a local newspaper as the headline “He raped as a teenager and now works to stop sexual violence in South Africa”. His name is Dumisani Rebombo. He is a advocate for women’s rights. Wait, there’s a catch. He’s a rapist himself.

This project:

My mission is to find a certain type of current event occurring right now, somewhere in the world and research it and find as much information about as I can. Im going to find out the following:
~What it does, and how it effects me?
~How can I do something to stop this tragedy?
~How it is effecting others?
~Why is it important to me?
I will blog about all of my findings and record every single piece of data I find, just because it might be important in the future. I want to educate, and teach others about my topic, so they can benefit also.

More Information

He was peer pressured into raping his victim as a teenager. At the time, he states,he wasn’t thinking much of the victim, but himself. He wondered if his parents were going to find out, or if it was going make him officially “cool”. This apparently was going to prove his “manly hood”.Rebombo was 15 when he raped. He got drunk, and he smoked before he did it.The boys thought it was funny and recorded the whole rape. As they did it, she pleaded with them to stop. They offered her 25 cents for her silence. He was somewhat nervous because he had never had sex before. The video lasted for 10 minutes and 33 seconds. The girl Rebombo raped never reported what happened and, Rebombo was never charged. “She never even spoke about it with anyone…She was too scared of the consequences,” Rebombo says. As the video  got popular, it got spread very widly, and rapidly and soon fell into the hands of a local newspaper and it was handed over to the police. The group of rapist were soon arrested and taken to court. Many decades later, he sought out to his victim and confronted her and apologized. She broke out in tears, while telling him that not only had it change her life mentally, but physically also. After the incident with Rebombo,She was raped two other times. The mental images still haunt her till this day.

Why I took and interest into this topic:

I have taken up an interest in this topic because it is so recurring to me. It is always brought up everywhere I go, even when I’m home. When my mother finds out things such as this, she’ll come and tell me about it. I’ve learned about it in my social studies classes, even when I moved on to highschool the percentage of rape has gone up tremendously.I know something needs to be done inorder for stories like this to stop popping up on the news.My mother came rushing into my room one day and said “Did you hear the story of how a 40-year old man raped an 11 month old baby? Now that people have to live in tents there, many men are raping women and children.”
I know that this should be solved in some way, but for now all i can do for myself is get more information

Infants in Sub-Sahara Africa Affected by Hydrocephalus (Blog #1)

You and the World? More like me and my world. There are many issues that affect this world we all live in horrific ways and many in spectacular that shape us all. I am blessed with many fantastic things in my life and when I get the chance to give to people who are a lot more less fortunate than I am, I am all in. When my English teacher, Ms. Dunn, gave me the chance the shine a light on something I wanted to change in the world, I couldn’t pick one. Hunger? Poverty? War? Politics? Most of these are already in the spotlight and have many corporations and organizations fighting to stop these problems. But then I remembered a documentary  I had watched recently that spoke of a major drawback in sub-Saharan Africa, around Uganda, that affected 75% of the infants and newborns in that area. Hydrocephalus.
hydrocephalus-2
hydrocephalus-2
(Above) A 1 year old baby who has had Hydrocephalus for the past 3 months.

Pediatric Hydrocephalus is the build up of Cerebral Spinal Fluid that surrounds the brain that puts an increased amount of pressure on the head. This can be a very dangerous condition if not treated properly. Hydrocephalus causes the baby to grow a head unnaturally large in comparison to the body. So large, that the baby or infant can’t hold their head up by themselves.

cure
cure
The one and only hospital that supports the babies and infants with Hydrocephalus in Uganda and the surrounding areas. This hospital was founded by the CURE foundation.

In the United States, 1 in every 500 baby delivered is diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. Fortunately, there are more than 3,500 neurologists in the United States to help cure the patient affected. In Sub-Saharan Africa, there are about 100,000-375,000 NEW cases of Pediatric Hydrocephalus every year and more than 4,000 every month. In addition there are only four doctors that have the ability to help with this disease. Additionally, there is only one hospital in that entire area that patients can go to. The hospital isn’t close to most villages. Families affected must  save up all of their farming money for 6-7 months just to get transportation to the hospital. So by the time families come back home, they are usually always bankrupt.

The scary reality and truth to this entire issue is that even 90% of the infants and babies affected by Hydrocephalus die...sometimes even with treatment. The mortality statistic is horrid. The infants affected die for a few reasons. One, because there aren't enough doctors, there aren't doctors to follow up on the procedure on the baby incase something goes wrong. Second, lack of money cause a lack of transportation to hospitals to get the proper help necessary. Third, there are some families who are tricked into believing that hydrocephalus is not a disease. They have elders in their neighborhood who trick them into paying them more than hospital costs to them "to take the devil out" of the child.

What these people need is support from people like us in America who have so much to give. We need people oversees helping out. Doctors to help on the medical standpoint. Volunteers for the short distance transportation. Most importantly, teachers and educators to really educate people of the affected areas in Africa that this is a killer disease that happens all around the world and not in their local village. They need a helping hand and through this project I am determined to do so.

Pet Ownership

In America 62% of households have a pet cat or dog, that’s about 4 out of every ten homes. About 26,874,879 pets were bought in 2009, and about 2-3 million are adopted. There are 5-7 million cats and dogs put into shelters a year, 70% cats and 60% dogs. Yet there are still people going out and buying pure-breads. When you can go give a pet a home and spend a lot less. Why is this?

A lot of these animals are lost and less than 2% are not returned to there owners and put in shelters. 25% of the dogs in shelters are pure-breads, which is what most people want. Even though that the science shows that mix-breads are healthier.

There are protest a most pet stores trying to stop people from going in the stores and buying pets. The biggest concern is about people buying dogs from stores, because of the U.S puppy mills. Puppy Mills are a place were people bread female dogs so they can sell them to pet stores then the pet stores sell them to people. They keep the dogs in cages stacked on top of another, and they don’t clean them. The worse part about all of this is when the female dog can’t have puppies any more they just neglect her until she dies.)

Cyberbullying Blog Post 1: Reginald Simmons

Introduction

The issue I chose for my “You and The World” project is bullying. Specifically, cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is any type of bullying that involves using internet or other interactive technologies, to repeatedly harm a person. It’s just like regular in-person bullying, but instead of being in front of the victim, the offender uses a social website, mostly, to deliver what they have to say. Most cyber bullying takes place on social networking and blogging sites, and is mostly done by users who are anonymous. Though cyber bullying may not seem to be as effective as in-person bullying, it is just as serious and dangerous.

Why Do People Cyberbully?

There are many different reasons that people cyber bully others. Some of the most common and frequent reasons are pique, revenge or vexation. Sometimes, people do it simply because they can, or because they’re bored, etc. Also, in many cases, people will do it because others are doing it. People will also bully for their own entertainment. People who like to be on top of everyone else may do it as a reminder that the victim is less than them, which is a moral of a corrupt dictator. Though there are very many reasons people cyberbully, whatever reason it is, is wrong.

How Do People Cyberbully?

Just as there are many reasons why people cyberbully, there are also many ways for them to do it. Someone could make an anonymous post on someone’s blog making an offensive statement. Someone could make a page dedicated to put another person down, and invite many people into it. A group of friends could gang up on one person, and bombard them with horrible comments. The phrase “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, certainly doesn’t apply to everyone; many people can be more hurt by words than they can be by physical pain.

Human Trafficking Blog Post #1

Human Trafficking and the stories behind it.

Human Trafficking is a horrible thing and it’s happens to poor people who have dreams of going to another country. So they talk to some person who owns this “transporting business” and then the poor person gets taken to another place where they work and get paid below the minimum wage. Simply to put it, they are trapped there for most of their life because the owners destroy their Passport and Id. Then they are put to work past the limit of human capabilities and they are fed food that probably doesn’t taste good.

The continuation of Human Trafficking is terrible and it’s all done for profit. All this does is destroy the migrants from other countries and towns who just what to support their families and instead they get captured and worked to the edge of death. Children and especially women are sold into prostitution and are tortured by their Slave Masters; I think the weight of this subject is a lot to handle but even harder to talk about. Can we stop this or will it continue to go on for many more years? Can you stop it?

Victims of Human Trafficking are being shown the dark parts of the world; children, women and other victims are being terrified and the growing fear of never seeing your family again. The Numerous Words of Human Trafficking are hard to look at but they all say the same thing, Human Trafficking has to stop!

Victims of Human Trafficking are looking for Help but the locations of these enslavement places are hidden from the outside world and lets hope that this modern day Slavery stops and be ended before any more family are disconnected from each other.

The Shackles that hold these victims captive are locked with a key, a key of despair. They take away the victims belongings, demand money, work them half to Death and worst of all, they keep the victims separated from their families. Lives are at stake here and I don’t see the rates going down. People are becoming Victims because they are lied to about having a new life in another country. Victims are dying because of this; the Slave Traders do this all for profit and do not even care about the victims, all they care about is the profit and themselves.

Will This Ever Stop Happening?

Interesting Quotes and Facts

A senior U.N. official says that as many as 2.4 million people may be victims of human trafficking worldwide at any given time.

Media's Idea of 'Perfect'

You know when you wait at the checkout line at a supermarket? Sometimes the line is long, but so are all the others. While the person in front of you is handling their groceries, you go ahead and pick up one of the many magazines at the checkout. You usually pick up the one that has the most interesting cover, or a magazine brand you’re familiar with. As you flip through mindlessly, you see ads and articles about being skinny and losing weight. There are also ads that have models with seemingly flawless skin and no imperfections to count for. They’re tall, ageless, and always thin.

Mass media’s perception of perfect has changed over the years. About forty years ago, it was all about being thick and having curves. Now it’s about having a slim waist and being skinny. Young girls have always looked at magazines of television and compared themselves to the models. Am I too fat? Am I too skinny? Those are the questions running through heads constantly. Once females see the media’s perception of ‘beauty’ or ‘perfection’, they go out and try to become what they’ve just seen.

Usually, there is no problem with this. Yes, it’s fine if girls desire to be a healthy weight. But currently, media has made this view of beauty deadly. Many models are now digitally altered and ‘airbrushed’. This means that they are photographed with their original proportions and skin flaws. But then the photograph gets to the magazine editors; they send it over to the people who have exceptional skills in Photoshop and other photo editing applications. There, they manipulate the thickness of the model, like slimming their thighs and elongating their legs. They airbrush their skin to get rid of age flaws and to destroy blemishes. Their arms are thinned also. After all that, the photograph goes back to the magazine and is published.

0720-faith-hill-photoshop-11photoshop, before and after, red

See the difference ? This is what happens to ordinary people

Most girls see these types of images and think that their body is horrible, repulsive, and imperfect. As young as nine, girls start to diet to try to live up to the image on the television screen. They begin to develop eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. Some even go as far as to starve themselves to death.

All just to be perfect.

My question is: Why? Why would young girls do this to themselves just to try to live up to media’s version of ‘perfect’? What happened to the time where being thick and healthy was the way to be?  What kind of transition did the media take to end up like this?

You and the world

I am doing this project in English class about you and the world. It’s about problems around the world. So I have to find issues that happen in the world. My issue is bullying. Bullying is one of the things that happen a lot in the world and I want to tell you all about it. Then I would like to see if we can find a solution. If you asking yourself how is bullying an issue? Or what is bullying well today is your lucky day I’m going to tell you.

According to www.stopbullying.govBullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.”  To me bullying is when you are not repeating someone.

There is different type of bullying. There is bullying by saying something example are:

·      Teasing

·      Name-calling

·      Threatening to cause harm

After that there is Physical bullying:

·      Hitting/kicking/pinching

·      Spitting

·      Taking or breaking someone’s thing

Last but not less that there is social bullying:

·      Telling other children not to be friends with someone

·      Spreading rumors about someone

·      Embarrassing someone in public

These are just the beginning with bullying. Bullying can be even harmful.

Bullying happen at school, online, and even where you live (in that neighborhood). A lot of parents don’t even know that it happen in their neighborhoods.  Some bullying can happen at home. But most of it is happening online no because of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and many more. Your phone can even be one of the things that can help others bully you. Example by text message or e-mail, and more. There is way to find out if you that bully or not maybe you can take a test. If you a teacher you can make thing a class game.

Food Problems

Hello out there everyone. Today I am writing about the impending, possibly even hidden problems in the United States’ food culture. Let’s face it, America has some problems with the way it eats. Otherwise 33.9% or more of us would not be either overweight or obese. The facts are startling; not to mention the way they are treating the animals in the meat packing industry, and even more problems that I have not even found out about yet.

Why am I writing about this? A wise person once said “you are what you eat” and I care about what I eat. My English teacher gave us an assignment to chronicle an issue that is important to us, and I chose food. Though what got me thinking about the problems with American food? It all started with a documentary film called: Food Inc. It brought the issues out to the world in an emotional and devastatingly realistic way. It brought up issues that I had never even heard of and I thought never happened. I was intrigued and disgusted and I wanted to know more about the food culture in America.

I found on a 2010 government report, which you can see here that 33.9% of adults over 19 years old, were obese. And 18.1% of teenagers were obese as well. What is going on? Most of the problem lies in how and what Americans eat. A lot of people consume McDonalds or high fructose corn syrup, which has been linked as a cause of weight gain according to Princeton University. Cholesterol and heart problems are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to health issues caused by bad food.

In the course of these blog posts I would like to get to know this problem in a more in depth manner and try to really think of practical solutions that will help get Americans healthier.

You and The World: Teenage Obesity Blog Post #1

Hello readers! My name is Liza Cohen and I am a student at Science Leadership Academy. I am writing this blog post to inform you and everyone else about teenage obesity, why it is important, the effect it has on us, and how we can prevent it from happening.

The topic that I want people to become more aware about is child obesity. Whether it is a young toddler, growing child, or teenager; this problem has continued to full extent. The percent of overweight children has increased since the 1970's. The age range for obesity is ranged around 6 to 17 year olds. That is a wide variety of children, which more than 1 out of 5 are struggling with this issue. Small things like lacking of exercise and a poor diet can cause obesity. To elaborate on the numbers, I want to compare obesity then to how it is now. In the 1900’s, obesity was less of an issue than it is now. In fact, in the 1900’s being stood out for being overweight was a good thing. I say this because when you were seen overweight, it meant you had wealth, to afford food. However, things are the complete opposite now. Obesity for anyone, especially teenagers is an issue. There are medical, physical, and emotional problems all due to being obese. Just because the causes and perspectives on obesity has changed, doesn’t make it less important now as it was then.

A lot of you might be curious on what exactly is obesity. Mind you, gaining a few extra pounds here and there is not considered obesity. Gaining weight and being overweight is not considered obesity until the person their weight is over 10% of what their proper weight should be for their age and height. Obesity is just a stronger more serious word for being overweight. There is almost an unlimited amount of proof to show that this issue needs to be put to a stop.

Now that you know what exactly obesity is, and how big of a role it plays in people’s lives, I want to inform you on why I care particularly about this topic. This world issue is important to me because it is an issue that I am constantly surrounded by. I have gotten to the point where I feel I should look more into this issue and see what I can do to prevent it from happening continuously. Another reason why this issue is important to me is because I personally can relate to it. I am not overweight, or even on the road to obesity. However, I am very cautious of my body and how I can keep my body in good shape. If I learn more about obesity I can help others and even myself from letting it happening to us.

In my upcoming blog posts, you will get a bigger taste on my perspective on teenage obesity and how I can prevent it from happening!

The International Water Crisis

What do you know about water crisis in the world, not only in Africa? What, you thought I was going to talk about was how people in Africa can’t get water? Many people think that the water crisis is only in far away places like Africa or Asia, but its not, its in our own backyards. It is something that much be addressed immediately, the future of mankind depends on it.

If we continue to consume water at our present rate, we will only have enough water to sustain us for another decade.

In the US, we often take things for granted. While most Americans enjoy such luxuries as air-conditioning, laundry machines, and cellphones, many people around the world don't even have access to clean water. Take a look at this chart below.

Orange Stream

The me and the world project that I’m doing is focused on child sex trafficking.  Child sex trafficking is a worldwide issue. Child sex trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation. It’s estimated that somewhere between 700,000 and 4,000,000 women and children are trafficked each year. UNICEF reports that across the world, there are over one million children entering the sex trade every year.

I’m interested in stopping child sex trafficking because no family should have to see their child become a sex slave. At the rate of how many women and children are being sold into human trafficking a year to how many days in the year there are approximately 111,111 women and children being sold each day. Adults and children are killed and abused in this industry. Even if they do make it out the industry they’re scarred for life. Ways to protect your child from being kidnapped and being sold into sex slavery are: don’t leave you child in an isolated area, don’t leave your child unsupervised, make sure your child knows not to talk to strangers, and to scream and call for an adult if they are being taken.

What I’m wondering is what do some women and children do that makes them a target for kidnappers? Do they have a look? Do they act a certain way or is it that the victims were just at the wrong place at the wrong time? I hope to learn how UNICEF plans on strengthening the laws to protect children. Also how do they plan on raising security to prevent kidnappers from exploiting children? If you want to help end human trafficking you can help here

Nick Manton 2nd Blog Post: ¿Como es sarcasmo en Español?

I asked this question on italki, and received these very insightful answers. I asked about what sarcasm is like in the spanish culture, and if they do have sarcasm. I have learned that in the spanish culture, sarcasm is very much like it is in english, you can easily tell when someone is using sarcasm by the tone of their voice, and they're stating the complete opposite of what actually happened.

Sarcasm (Week 2)

For the second week I tried to learn about sarcasm but did not make much progress.  My conversation partner did not give me any examples. He just told me that it is in the way that you say. I would like to know more about sarcasm in another language but I think that I will be moving on to a different topic.

Immigrant Rights Part 1: Dream Act

In Ms. Dunn’s 9th grade English class we had to choose a topic that was important to us. We would be making blog posts that keep our audience up to date with the headlines of today or bring awareness to the topic. When I heard that we had to choose a topic I immediately knew I wanted to blog about the topic of immigrant rights, but more specifically, the DREAM Act.

The American Dream, it is the title of the wish that many foreigners wish to obtain in the land of America, the land of opportunity.

Most families from all over the world come to the U.S to escape tension, war, or poverty in their own countries. Most immigrants come to the U.S seeking a better life. The ones, who come here illegally or even stay when their visa has expired, are often deported to back to their own countries. To a bigger dismay, excellent students who have come to the country when they were young, are denied education past that of high school, even when they are willing to pay tuition and have had numerous chances for scholarships.

Immigration is a very important topic to me personally, for I myself am an immigrant. I was born in Mexico and was brought over to the U.S when I was nine months old. Like many other immigrant teenagers I was brought here before we could make our own decisions. We were brought here because our parents wanted us to become greater than what we could become in our native homes. It is also not just Latinos, but people from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean islands, who come to the U.S for better opportunities. Most of the kids who come to America for the American dream either have the dream turned into a nightmare because of not being able to speak English. When they do begin to succeed they are sometime faced with the problem of having no education after high school. For this reason, an act is in the process of being approved. The DREAM Act bill needs to be supported by legislators and signed into law, but this can only be done with support from people of this country. This bill will allow foreign illegal immigrant students be able to apply for residency and get an education after high school, if they meet several requirements.

The requirements for being eligible for the DREAM Act is fair enough for both the person applying and the country. The country will benefit from the talented young minds that will become our future. The next generation is what the country will soon depend on and enabling the leaders of tomorrow, rather than deporting them, will benefit the U.S greatly. Is it really fair to deny immigrant teens the right to study here? By giving them a right to education we are accepting people for what they want to become; true Americans.

Colony Collapse Disorder Blog #1

Hello, my name is Alexa Eddy and I’m from Science Leadership Academy. This project is called “You in the world” here we pick a topic that we think is important nd blog about it. We are also going to have a debate that includes our topic there will be 6 groups and we choose which topic to debate about.

I’m a girl that has a big interest for agriculture and always looking to fix problems in my own garden. One issue that I have a problem with is CCD. Colony Collapse Disorder. This is when colonies of bees just die out of nowhere. I like using ways to help the planet out and I’m interested in this because not only do I like bees but they are responsible for 30% of the crops in the U.S.A. With out them food prices will go up, crops wouldn’t do as good as before and we will be losing a beautiful creature.

Colony collapse disorder has been happening more frequently. More and more colonies are dying yet scientists can’t exactly pinpoint the problem. Some say it’s the chemicals in pesticides, varroa (a bee pest), and insecticides may be lowering the bee’s immune system. It was also said that honey bees kept in captivity are having problems with malnutrition. Only being limited to certain crops can cause this. What doesn’t help either is the genetically modified crops. Some of those crops make Bt pollen which isn’t good for the bees.

Everybody needs food to survive right? Well, everyone one in 3 mouthfuls of your diet whether directly or indirectly comes from honeybees. If this gets worse prices of food will go up and they might keep on rising. If we don’t take care of this now we can go down in catastrophic levels. Which includes a whole different diet do to the loss of a lot of fruits and vegetables. When bees are moved around due to consumer demand to pollinate crops it puts stress on the bees. Also some crops aren’t really healthy or nutritious for them, like cranberries. (In the picture is corn that has not been pollinated)

I always wonder if the government Is really taking this into consideration or are they just telling us to not keep us that worried. I want to know if I can do something to help. Or if I can do something to benefit the wild bees and help them repopulate. I want to learn how we as the people can help because if all of us care we can make a huge difference in this topic.

Government and State Spending on Prisoners vs. Students

My name is Raekwon Smith and I’m doing a post on a world topic that interests me for school. It’s called You and The World and you pick a problem going on in the world that you want to talk about and then do a series of blog posts on it. My topic is about how the government and individual states spend more money on prisoners than kids and education. This topic is important to me because this could affect our education in the future because all the money we have is going towards funding prisons and prisoners that don’t deserve the care they receive. Prisons cost taxpayers more than $32 billion a year. Every year that an inmate spends in prison costs $22,000. An individual sentenced to five years for a $300 theft costs the public more than $100,000. The cost of a life term averages $1.5 million. One year at New Jersey State Prison cost more than one year at Princeton university.

According to heartsandminds.org, States are spending more money on prisons than education. Over the course of the last 20 years, the amount of money spent on prisons was increased by 570% while that spent on elementary and secondary education was increased by only 21%. They provide prisoners with free health care, internet access, weight room, cable television, access to libraries, free sports programs, computer lab, laundry services, funding to earn a degree, free housing, three square meals a day, clothing, and free dental care. Not all kids are provided with that type of care and attention that they give to prisoners. Our state of Pennsylvania is second on the list of most prisons.

Pennsylvania cut the budget for education to spend it on the growing rate of criminals in 2007. There are 46,000 inmates in Pennsylvania and $90 is spent on each inmate per day—which covers food, health care recreation, etc. The national average is only $63. $3.3 billion was spent last year on prison health care services.  Every inmate is guaranteed access to health care when they require it. It is stated in articlebase.com that if 30% of the prison population went to private facilities then it would save $100 million dollars annually but only 28 states allow that.

Private places could provide better care for prisoners while saving money (which would cost tax payers less) and preparing them for when they are released into the real world again to get along with everyone else. Every day 200 new cells are built. There could be private places instead to have a better outcome in the future. Her is picture of a prison cell in a Pennsylvania prison http://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/prison-5.jpg. Here is my bibliography.

The killer " Cancer"

For our “ You and the World” project my topic is cancer. In the past years cancer has become a well known sickness. Could it be the environment that is causing this? In the past years the pollution levels have gone up, people smoke more and drink a lot of heavy alcohol. They never really think what kind of effects this can have on your body. Statistics show that over the past 10 years more people are diagnosed with different types of cancer such as, lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.

Cancer is developed when there are changes in your genetic code (DNA) of a cell (initiation). Normally the body can repair the damaged cells but if they reproduce that may cause cancer, because there are to many bad cells in your body. Usually initiation isn’t the one cause of cancer the cells go through more changes and require a substance called promoter. There can be a couple of years between this process and when you actually start to show cancer symptoms.

There isn’t really one specific cause of cancer. Cancer can come from genetics, health, nutrition, personal habitats and environment. The things you do in your daily life can affect you and cause you to have serious problems later on in your life, such as cancer. It has been proven that smoking of any kind can cause cancer. Cigarette smoking contains 3,800 chemicals that are cancer causing. Your portions and your diet (fatty foods and alcohol) are also linked to cancer. Being in the sun for to long without sunscreen or tanning on the regular also is one of the main causes of melanoma (skin cancer). Also sexual behavior can spread disease, which can also cause cervical cancer. Environmental pollution by chemicals in our drinking water, air, food and work place has also been shown to be a factor of causing cancer. Chemicals that are in the air we breathe have been linked to causing cancer. Some chemicals that may cause cancer are benzene (which can cause leukemia), asbestos (this can cause lung cancer) and vinyl chloride (which can cause liver cancer). Workers that work with metal or heavy labor work such as factories are affected by some of these chemicals

Cancer is something people really need to be aware of. 1 and 3 americans with get cancer and 1 and 6 americans will die from cancer. Those are really scary statistics. Is there something we can do about it? Yes there may be and it is my mission to find out. We can’t let it kill people for much longer. In my blogs I will be talking about what we can do to make ourselves healthier and what we can do to give back to the cancer community.

STDs or STIs: The New Crisis Of Today's Teens Blog Post#1

In my English class we are focusing on a topic we are intrigued by, want to shout to the world to, and make a difference/change about it. We thought with our potential its about time that we put our voice out there and speak! Let the world hear the voice and see what really goes on in the mind of the educated youth in Philadelphia. This project is called “You and The World” where you develop a passion among a issues that you want to teach others about leading them to what your ideas ad thoughts about what we can do to change such a problem. I am here today to talk about the issues of STDs or if you prefer STIs.

I’m pretty sure almost everyone knows what an STD (STI) is if not an STD is a sexually transmitted disease or infections. Which you can easily catch if you are sexually active in any way with a partner that has the disease. I believe that in high school or near the end of middle school they have a health class that teach about these things but I also believe that there are some teens that don’t quite pay attention or take this issues seriously. That really bothers me. Next thing you know because they didn’t pay attention or cared they end up gaining such a disease. Of course they will have to deal with the consequences, suffer the pain that comes there way and live with regret.

The big issue that I have with this is that 1 in 4 teens between the ages of 14-19 have STD. It’s just not right! Hearing about this all I can think is why? Why is such a thing even exposed to us teens who should be focusing on more important things like what to do next with our lives not just to throw it away like some wasted piece of trash. It is said that if you are infected with such a disease the symptoms might show up right away or they just might show up in a week, month or even years depending on what kind you have. That’s why all mostly when people talk about STDs they always included getting tested as an option because you may think that your partner isn’t infected but you really never know until you see the real truth in reliable papers. Symptoms for both women and men are pain when you pee, around the butt hole, mouth, or private parts the inhabitations of bumps, blisters and such. If not treated or taking care of this STI can cause death I can’t imagine someone who could be my little sister/brother or older sister/brother having to go through this painful experience. I believe that this must come to an end and be solved for the sake of the generations that will soon be coming into this world. What do you think about this?

Philadelphia School Bullying

In the last Quarter of school, our English teacher Ms.Dunn gave us a project called “You and the World”. In this project the issue I am going to bring up is school bullying. I think bullying is the big issue going on all over U.S. I am interested in this issue because I have been bullied in middle school, because I spoke different languages when other kids in my class did not. I moved here from Bangladesh when I was twelve years old. When I started school, I didn’t know much English and was shy to talk. Kids would push me, try to fight me and make fun of me because I was different.

I think bullying is the perfect reason why kids in middle school don’t like to be in school. Watch this video. It shows how unsafe some of our schools are in Philadelphia. After years of harassment and bullying, this video was taken by a 12 year old girl who wanted her mother to see what going on in her classroom everyday.

According to the New York Times, in Philadelphia seven teenagers were arrested for a bullying incident in which a 13-year-old student was kicked and beaten before being hung by his coat from a spiked fence post. This is what is happening in our School District schools and I don’t think those kids are safe in school. We as community members have to do something about this bullying and stop it as soon as possible.

The Pro-Choice Movement's Involvement In Politics: Part 1

My english class at SLA has just started a project that requires us to choose a topic of importance to us and blog about it. Everyone is allowed to chose their own topic  but some people are doing the same ones. Our teacher will pick one of the topics from a student in my class and we will have to debate either for or against it. We weren’t necessarily asked to choose something controversial but a controversial topic allows for a better debate.

I have chosen the involvement of the Pro-Choice Movement in politics, mainly this upcoming election. The Pro-Choice Movement is the movement that’s goal is to give women their rights and legalize things like contraception and abortion. This topic is very controversial and is one of the main platforms some politicians run their campaigns on. For the most part Republicans are against it and for the most part, Democrats are for it. If you want to put political differences aside, the two groups can be split up by people that are against abortion and birth control, “pro-life supporters,” and people that support the issue, “pro-choice supporters.”

In ancient times abortion was just considered a form of family planning and population control. In today’s world, the main deterrent from abortion and contraception is religion. Part of President Obama’s healthcare overhaul in 2009 was that employers provide free birth control coverage. "Every woman should be in control of the decisions that affect her own health," said the president. Recently he announced that religious groups were exempt from that law. Under the new plan, religious institutions are not required to provide birth control to their employees but the institution’s insurance company still has to offer coverage without raising the premium.

For those who argue against abortion and contraception, it is usually a question of ethics and morals. The main Pro-Life argument is that an unborn fetus is a living being and therefor should not be terminated under any circumstances. For the most part  the politicians arguing for the Pro-Life movement are men and there are very little women advocating against contraception and abortion.

Philadelphia Increasing Murder Rate

Our wonderful teacher, Mrs. Dunn, has given this project to us. This project is all about worrying less about yourself, and more about different issues that are going on in the world, or in this country, or even in your own neighborhoods. So with that I am going to jump right into the issue at hand. Now my issue is on somewhat of a bigger scale than just my own neighborhood, this issue includes all of Philadelphia, and that issue is, the continuously growing homicide rate in Philadelphia, and that among teens towards each other.

This is an increasingly troubling topic, and very interesting and alarming to me. Not only do I know people who have died due to useless teen violence, but also I have seen how these deaths can impact the family members of those diseased. For these reasons, teenage homicides, as well as all homicides in Philadelphia have a great personal, and interesting touch on me, and it should you as well.

The Philadelphia homicide rate was the highest in 2010 throughout the entire country, with a 19.6% homicide rate. This is nothing compared to the fact that so far there has been 122 homicides in Philadelphia alone. Considering it is only May, this is a staggering total. You also see that since it is only about half way through the year, if this rate stays the same, we will have over 250 homicides by the end of the year. That is 250 people who died due to the selfishness of others, and who obviously died before their times. If that weren’t enough, here are more staggering statistics about the homicides in Philly over the past few years:

·      In 2011 there was a total of 324 homicides in Philadelphia with a 20.7% homicide rate, which was more than any other large city.

·      Philadelphia has had 1,654 homicides over the past 5 years, with 2007, being the worst year, with 391 homicides that year alone.

·      During 2006 and 2007, Philadelphia was the only city with a population of over 1,000,000 to be on the 10 most murderous cities list.

So from this you can see that the homicide rate in Philadelphia is a serious issue. Although I am not yet an expert on this topic, I would like to try and become one by learning more about Philadelphia and its unbelievable murder rate. Some things that I still question and would like to learn are; where in Philadelphia is there the most murders? What nationality of people is doing the most murdering? What age group does the most murdering and how can we change this so that it doesn’t happen more often?

Here are all of my sources at this link.
