What Can We Do To Spread Pit Bull Awareness?


In my first post, I discussed the issue of the American Pit Bull Terrier, and spreading awareness in my community. I addressed how there are several negative media portrayals of Pit Bulls, as well as how the breed is heavily influenced by its treatment. For example, if a Pit Bull is treated abusively, it will act accordingly. For my second post, I did some original research about the issue by conducting a survey. In my survey, I received various answers. Many people did not know too much about Pit Bulls, while some had very positive experiences, and others had negative ones. From this survey, I was able to gain knowledge of people’s perceptions of Pit Bulls, and how I could positively impact this issue. After completing my original research, I wanted to do something more.

For additional research, I looked at Saved Me Animal Rescue’s website. Their mission is “to provide a safe, responsible, and loving home [to their] rescues.” They are a non-profit shelter, and  pull dogs from shelters that euthanize (“put down”) due to a lack of space. This means they are a no-kill shelter. This shows how Saved Me is dedicated to helping dogs in danger of euthanization, and making sure they have a chance at life. I personally think this is great because when dogs have to be euthanized, their innocent lives are taken away. While sometimes dogs must be put down because of extreme behavioral and health issues, it is often done because of overcrowding.

Euthanasia is especially common among Pit Bulls because they make up a lot of the shelter dog population. According to Save A Bull Rescue's Website, about 75% of municipal shelters euthanize pit bulls immediately upon arrival to the shelters. In addition to that, “Studies estimate that up to 1 million pits are euthanized per year, or 2,800 per day.” Almost 3,000 innocent dogs will be killed today. They also say 1 in 600 pit bulls born will ever be adopted into a good home. 1 in 600. These tear-jerking statistics make me glad that I support a shelter like Saved Me, which helps lower these statistics. Even the county shelter has already euthanized 371 dogs (including owner-intended), according to April statistics on their website.

The statistics are EXTREMELY low. Only .16% of pit bulls will be adopted into a good home.

For my agent of change, I volunteered at Saved Me’s shelter. There, they rely heavily on volunteers because they are non-profit.  At the shelter, I walked and played with the dogs, because they don’t have enough workers to be able to do that as much as it is needed. The first week I went, I walked two dogs named Bam Bam, a chihuahua mix, and Jasper, a pit bull. When I returned two weeks later, both dogs had been adopted! When I returned, I walked and played with a total of four  dogs. Working with the dogs made me feel happy. I was glad I was making a difference in their lives, as well as providing the shelter staff additional help. I do plan to return to volunteer several times within the next few months. Sadly, I will not be able to volunteer there for much longer because the shelter is in danger of closing at the end of June; their building’s lease is up.

Doing this project has been an emotional roller coaster for me. I chose to focus on Pit Bulls because I have seen negative stereotypes of the breed, but I know they are rarely true. I wanted others to see through the negative stereotypes too. As the project went on, I added information about the effect of the negative stereotypes: both its impact on people, and their lives. While I really enjoyed doing research about pit bulls, as well as being able to help them, learning some of the statistics is heartbreaking. However, now that I know these things, I am very glad I chose to focus on Pit Bull Awareness.

Throughout this project, I learned how some of the common misconceptions of Pit Bulls are made, what people think about them, and how to help. I even learned how I can benefit the lives of Pit Bulls in my community. One thing I could have done better could have been to focus more on the actual breed for my agent of change. For example, I could have volunteered with just Pit Bulls. If I had done this, I would not have had the opportunity to meet the lovely shelter dogs I worked with. While Pit Bulls are at higher risk than some breeds, others need loving too. It is important to keep working with the issue, instead of leaving it alone after this project That is why I will continue volunteering at the shelter as long as possible. While I might not be able to eradicate the issue completely, I am doing my part.

Starting the Change

In my First Post I introduced the topic of racial microaggressions and defined what they were. Racial microaggressions are degrading statements that target a specific race, they are usually jokes or stereotypes. I also addressed the fact that the best way to stop racial microaggressions, in youth, is by raising awareness about them.

In my Second Post, I explained all the progress I had made since the first post. I interviewed six individuals. I summarized every interview in the post and also attached the full interview done with each person. Most of these interviews told me that racial microaggressions happen commonly in SLA, but more commonly on social media. I also started to figure out what my Agent of Change would be. An Agent of Change is the part of the project when we make our change that we have been building to.

For my agent of change, I did a presentation in my English classroom, to an audience of SLA students willing to learn more about this cause. I decided to do a presentation because I found it to be the easiest way to get my information out to a large audience. I made the presentation by using the knowledge I gained from my research, taking my previous interviewers feedback  and changing it for the better.

This presentation was a success. I raised awareness of racial microaggressions to about thirty students and many of them said that they learned how to have a conversation about race from the presentation. That is exactly what I wanted to accomplish and I think I did it to the best of my ability.

The focus of the presentation was to tell people to not be afraid about race and explain to them how to have the conversation. I started my presentation by explaining what racial microaggressions are and how they are commonly jokes or stereotypes about it. Next, I explained that they come from a place of comfort if there are jokes, stereotypes or serious statements Lastly, I explained that the best way to have the conversation is to inform and to look to be informed, not to judge the person you are talking to. The presentation was inspired by the American Psychological Associations feature by Tori DeAngelis. One thing Tori said was, “She was acting with bias—she just didn't know it.”There was a part of my presentation that focused on ignorance to race and what Tori said was the inspiration for that. Sometimes the aggressor may not even know that they are acting with bias or being racist because it may be all they know. My hope is that students will see racial microaggressions and stop them by following my idea for how to have a conversation with others. I hope to continue raising awareness on this subject throughout my years of high school.

I enjoyed this project because of two main things. One of the first reasons being that I loved how it allowed students to be creative with their work and what they wanted to do for their agent of change. The second reason being that the project was made to help the world in someway. I never really had any problems during this project and everything went well. This has lead to students doing things that have benefited their community considerably.

  Sexual Objectification and Its Effect on Women’s Mental Health


Sexual objectification is when women are seen by men as objects made for their own pleasure and not as intelligent, complex beings. Examples of sexual objectification include catcalling, sexual assault, rape, or simply getting checked out. Studies show that sexual objectification impacts women's mental health for the worse as I stated in BLOG POST 1. Every woman that I have talked to about being sexually objectified says they deal with mental health issues very often, including daily battles with anxiety or depression. I even did surveys on a few high school female students at Science Leadership Academy in BLOG POST 2.

Women are starting to come out more about their experience with being sexually objectified in the workplace, at school, or even just walking down the street. One example is a 20 year old named Noa Jansma who took selfies with every man that cat called her to show everyone awareness and show people how much this happens to women every single day. I think this is a very good way of showing people that this is a very damaging thing that a lot of men do.


For my agent of change, I decided I wanted to film a video touching on these issues of sexual objectification then later get in touch with an 8th grade sex ed teacher to show her students. Unfortunately, my plans and communication with the teacher fell through and I was unable to get ahold of her so I just posted the video on youtube and hope to reach the goal of 30 views. I felt as though talking about sexual objectification in depth would be a great way to spread awareness and understanding of the topic. The experience of working toward an agent of change was stressful at times but I tried my best to stay focused and get it done. I am curious to see what people’s response and reactions will be to the video.


I loved doing this topic as my project as a whole. I learned a lot of new things and feel like I can relate to a lot of things that women are experiencing in their daily lives. I learned about myself and others that being sexually objectified is what really pulls down our self confidence levels and can leave negative effects on women even if we don’t realize that’s the reason some of us feel bad about ourselves. In this project I feel as though I could’ve managed my time a lot better so that there wouldn’t be any inconveniences. There is still a lot left for people to do to help end sexual objectification but I think our best bet for now is to just raise awareness and show people this is how we feel. Women are feeling degraded and oppressed and we need to show people that this isn’t okay. We need to show people that we aren’t just pieces of meat to be lusted after and that we are actually complex and intelligent human beings with feelings and a personality.

Educating My Class About the Bystander Effect

For my first two posts, I discussed my past experience of being a victim of the bystander effect, and wanting to explore more about it. I learnt a lot of surprising information about why a person would not help defuse the situation and what makes a person a bystander. I learned that there are three main factors for a bystander effect to happen. The first is the amount of people around the situation. The more people around the situation, the least likely they would intervene. Second, is the idea of diffusion of responsibility. This relates to the second one where people will less likely take responsibility for helping out when there are others present. They think other people are responsible take action. Finally, the dominant person in the group can also play a huge role in the bystander effect. The so called “leader” of the group can choose to respond or not which can cause a chain reaction to his/her followers to also follow the leaders decision. I also learned about past experiments that is similar to the topic about the bystander effect like the Milgram Experiment and the Stanford Prison Experiment.  The Milgram Experiment focus on the obedience of a authority figure and personal conscience of the non-authority figure. This is similar to one of the factors of the bystander effect which is the dominant person. The Stanford Prison Experiment wanted to see the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The results of the experiment were surprising because the situation caused the volunteers  to behave a certain way.

What I decided to do to spread awareness about the bystander effect to other people was to educate my English class about the bystander effect by making my very own presentation about bystanders. In my presentation, I started out with a question to the whole group asking if they knew what the bystander effect was. Only half of the class raise their hand to share their answer.  Then I started to tell them what the factors and causes are of the bystander effect. Then, I started to educate them about what they could do to overcome the bystander effect.

I recently started to research how everyday people can help overcome and how to avoid the bystander effect from happening. According to VeryWellMind, there are 7 ways that could help you overcome the Bystander Effect. They said that just looking at other people helping another person out can help inspire you to do the same. Being aware of what’s going on is important too because you have to know when someone is actually in need of help or if they are just playing around. Having a personal connection with someone from the crowd can help too. Just by looking them in the eye or talking to them can increase the chance of them helping you. You also need to see everyone as person who will need of help then excluding a certain type of people out. Finally, the way that is the most important one to overcome the Bystander Effect is to just jump and help. You might have everything planned out and know what is going on, but still be just standing there, just watching the events happen. The most important part is actually helping and taking action so just jump in and help.


After doing this project for two quarters, I learned a lot about the bystander effect. I went from having slight knowledge about it to having a deeper understanding. I feel like I helped contribute to something good and that I have done something for the community. What I feel like I could have done better is to not have been so nervous when presenting in front of people and also I wish I had practiced presenting. What is still left for me to do to make a change is spread the word out to even more people than just my class

​My capstone was the black girls can conference. I designed this conference to be a place where young African American women come to see positive role models, learn about opportunities in Philadelphia for you and talk about things like microaggressions, the professional world, self-care, healthy relationships and much more. I got this idea because when I was younger I went to a conference where I saw women much older than me at the time doing amazing things and that changed my life. I decided that I wanted to empower and uplift young women because of representation matters. On April 7th I made this long time dream come true at SLA. I was able to make this possible with the support of the amazing staff at SLA and the amazing staff at SLA. I think it was really helpful to the very few young ladies that were in attendance. We had great conversation, amazing food and as a whole, we grew in ourselves as well as with the ladies around us. There were a lot of things that I wish I could have changed, one of them being the attendance. Although that was one of the things that are not 100 percent up to me however I wish I could have done more to promote or promote people to come out for a great cause. Even some things didn't work out the way I wanted. I hope that I inspired the young ladies who were there to be themselves and know that they can do absolutely anything they put their minds to.

Arielle Moore Capstone

Abstract

For my capstone, I created a podcast. Having no experience with the medium of radio and audio, you can imagine that starting my own was a definite challenge. First, I considered my target audience: adolescents and young adults. Ultimately, I decided that social awareness, pop-culture, and politics would be the best backdrop for my show. Next, I had to create a name. After polling a few of my peers and searching for inspiration, I stumbled upon the name ‘Get Schooled’. It was short, concise, and not only represented the podcast well but that it was school-based.
Now, I had to find a hosting website for each episode. I learned that SoundCloud lets artists upload their content for free, and it can be streamed from their app. Concluding that this was the most feasible option, I created my SoundCloud page and got to work designing a logo and the content I would use to market my podcast with. 
After collecting all my necessary recording materials, it was time to begin creating each episode. I first made a template for what would be covered in the span of 15-20 minutes, and requested a co-host and ‘student spotlight’ for each week. Coming up with new subject matter on a weekly basis was the most efficient way to ensure a consistent episode schedule. I used Monday & Tuesday to write, Wednesday to record, Thursday to edit, and Friday to upload. This system was time-consuming and hard work, but proved itself to be worth it in the end.

This source was really informative regarding the outreach for my podcast. I don’t have a strong background in marketing so this showed me how to effectively and inexpensively get your message on a larger platform, ultimately having your voice heard. I wanted to make sure that SLA students at least knew about my podcast so that I would have an established audience. For the most part, I’m just using my hosting website and some flyers around the school as promotion and this website talked about getting a strong base as being effective. 

‘Code Switch’ Podcast 
This podcast is a bit more structured, but still maintains the format of a natural, fluid conversation, which I plan to use in my own podcast. I also really like that the show has a playlist of current songs that they encourage their listeners to hear. That is a creative touch that I might consider mirroring with my podcast. I do find a bit of their topics to be more geared toward a different demographic, but I appreciate getting inspiration from all areas.

This book is all about the technical aspect of creating a podcast. Which audio is the best, where to host your podcast, how to record, how to plan your episodes, and so much more. Before knowing how to even begin, I needed a template. This book served as a guide on how to get started and understand the basics of running a podcast. In many instances, I was able to refer to it as a foundation for my new show. A few of its aspects are a bit outdated since this book is almost 4 years old, but its content was very helpful to me nonetheless.

I gained a lot of vital information from this source, although I’m not planning on making my podcast a business. It provided a lot of points about how to manage and market your podcast strategically and successfully which I find to be quite helpful. I will hopefully be able to expand my podcast beyond the borders of SLA and I think this source will put me on the right track to manage and monitor it by myself. It also gave me a lot of information on how to properly plan and strategize in order to have the most fruitful outcome.

NPR is a tool to search for and create new podcasts. I find it to be incredibly innovative and interesting when searching for inspiration or needing new information about what kinds of podcasts have a large audience. I like getting other aspects of podcasts I wouldn’t usually listen to or that aren’t geared toward my demographic. It allows me to see more than one perspective and learn how to incorporate themes that are transcendent and cater to a plethora of interests.

Looking for a podcast that candidly comments on aspects of media, pop culture, politics, and everything in between? It’s The Read. Its two clever hosts continuously keep their fingers on the pulse of what everyone’s talking about and their witty banter sets the perfect scene for a podcast. I’ve been pulling a lot of inspiration from this show due to their fast-paced and consistently interesting episodes. As an avid listener, I closely look for what aspects make this show worth listening to each week. A bit of their topics can be a bit vulgar which I tend to stay away from when making my podcast, but I appreciate their honesty.

This article provides a lot of resources on how to upstart your podcast and how to take initiative with the topics and make a clear decision for your show. This article was from more of an 
entrepreneur standpoint, so the business aspect was clearly displayed as well. Being responsible for just about every aspect of my podcast is quite intense, but with the right guidance, it is bound to be successful. Laying out the surface on which to build your vision requires being disciplined enough to educate yourself on the things you didn’t previously know, and this source showed me the importance in asking for help and searching for the materials you need.

What do the people want to hear? That is the question. This article shows the reader what it is that actually builds an audience. I have gained a lot of knowledge from using this source because even though I have social media as a platform for my outreach, I would also like to know what it is that actually keeps listeners consistently tuned. A large part of what attracts listeners is your intro. When creating mine, I needed a place of reference and I found this source to be incredibly helpful.

I’m currently finding it a bit difficult to use social media as a way to expand my voice, but this article has been really helpful in labeling the steps I should take. I appreciate that this source takes a realistic and achievable approach to getting your message across through social media. I want to ultimately enlarge my platform and this article breaks down each aspect that is necessary to do so.

This website shows the time, effort, and logistics that go into starting and running your own podcast. I have never done this before and have no real point of reference, so being able to read about someone else’s experience and draw inspiration has been helpful and benefitted me and the current state of my podcast. I gained a lot of information about how to turn your writing into something people want to hear, and how to incorporate other creative themes into your final product.

Y&TW Post 3: Agent of Change

In my first post and in my second post we talked about what I would like to call the Social Decline. The “ Social Decline” is basically in my view all the negative effects of technology and how we are oblivious to the changes that are happening. Other the the overall idea of my You & The World project, we went into details of a list of things that affect us as teens negatively varying from, sleep deprivation, addiction, and self consciousness. So far we did some research and then we wrote a essay on it along with pictures and caption. Then a month later I furthered my research in social media, and ironically we used social media to at first record interviews of teens and there phone usage but we weren't getting to the point or coming up with the solution that we needed. That is when I created a ten question survey that I asked people to fill out in the span of 2 days we came up with enough answers to sort of weigh it out and come up with a final product.


Another terrible effect of social media to add to this list is the most important is cyber bullying. It is sad to say , but it has become so common in the average teens daily life. In many ways social media relates to cyber bullying a website  stopbullying.gov says “Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content.”.  With all that said cyber bullying can happen anywhere anytime where there is an online device in reach. The topic is very aminstrema but for reasons of trying to move forward and get rid of the cyber bullying.


Moving on with this project we were assigned to make change, which is smart because what is the point of the research if you can’t apply it to the world and do something about it rather then speak about it. So it honestly took me a while for me to get the wheels moving, but eventually I came up with a simple idea that can make change in a way. I decided to present the issue and I was going to originally present a solution but I gave the audience the choice t be able to decide what they were going to do after they learned some new information about how social media can affect you negatively. Before all of that I got another thing or affect to share. And then I started to make a short and simple slideshow with little bullet points( so they can focus on me rather then the powerpoint).

In conclusion to my attempt on change, I found the experience to be very satisfying. When I say satisfying I mean it in the way that you feel good when you make a change. I feel like I could;have planned a little better but it wouldn’t be game changing. This project overall was a good experience even if the process was not as smooth the end result is a positive one. I personally learned a lot about myself  and that I am highly involved in social media and how I need to make a change in myself as well as other people.

Gavin Lane Capstone (abstract)

Abstract


For a long time now, maybe since middle school, I have always taken an interest in SEPTA and public transit in general, but especially public transit in Philadelphia. It is for this that I chose to do my project on the concept of establishing another SEPTA line, similar to the Broad Street and Market-Frankford lines that already exist here in Philadelphia.

Since about 7th or 8th grade thereabouts, I have taken an interest in the concept of public transportation, for various reasons. From the various ways in which it can make for so much more efficiency, to how it moves through cities  and what parts of the cities, to the various different types of it, there is really a lot more to it than we think about. We take for granted a lot of these systems. People don’t know, or really think about this for that matter, but there is a lot to deal with, and a lot of planning and maintenance that goes into these “major arteries and veins” of sorts.

For my project, I came up with and designed a fictional SEPTA metro rail line that would connect some of the major inner suburbs, such as Upper Darby, to South Philadelphia and Penn’s Landing and the Delaware waterfront of Center City. The line was created with the goal of connecting areas that are not well connected at all by the current public transit system. These newly connected areas, of course, include rather important locations, notably the stadiums. This line is the Suburban Hook Line.

The Line follows a “hook” shape, giving it its name. Looking at the map, the line has three services. The First one is the local, which stops at every stop between Upper Darby and the Stadiums. The Second, is the express which stops at a few stops between Upper Darby and the Stadiums. The third is the Penn’s Landing Special, which stops at a few stops between UD and the Stadiums and then goes local to Penn’s Landing. I had decided that this would be the best schematic when creating this. To determine all of this, I did a lot of research. I did research on where the tracks would be, what kind of vehicle would be best, and how the system could run the best.


For what I learned, well, I’m really not quite sure what to say. I learned about old train right-of-ways that I did not previously know existed. When I went in to this though, I already kind of knew a lot of this stuff. I suppose you could say I learned more about certain transportation connections and suburban areas that I previously did not know much about. I also learned about a few new SEPTA plans and projects, including the “Direct” BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Line.


I am honestly, as of now, not sure what the future holds for this idea. I may drop it due to coming up with an even more efficient improvement on it. Or, I may go big with it and one day take it to SEPTA as a legitimate proposal, who knows. Where I stand now though, I am not sure what I am going to do in the future with this idea, but I will likely still hold onto it.

Printmaking Blog

Printmaking has a long important history. It is in important because it is impossible to make the same image exactly the same. So in order to get the image closest to it's exact form you have to print it on to a surface and use that surface on other surfaces.

The invention of printing gave a new style to clothes that was different from hand drawing the image on to the shirt. The invention stopped hard work and labor towards making the same design over again. It is almost impossible to draw the same design over and over again so that is why printmaking was so important. Printmaking was used in all cultures unlike something where it is a cultural thing. This is important and needed with in all cultures and worlds. Like, Knights need it on their armor, Germans need for their clothes making.

This image really touches me because I surf so I know what the eye of the wave really looks like and they did a great representation of it. The large wave makes threatening presents to the boat. The mountain in the back calms the images out and makes the picture equal.

Jordan Grayes Capstone

I am pleased to share with you all my progress on my senior Capstone 2018 here at Science Leadership Academy. I had a clear idea heading into senior year that this would be the year I finally find out if music is my path. I know many of my friends appreciate my skills musically. It was very important of me to learn more of the technical side of music. In my senior capstone, I decided my theme would be, researching what it means to become a part of the music industry. These past several months have consisted of making a studio, writing lyrics, and talking to music producers, all before actually recording my own 6 song EP of self produced music. I learned that in 2018 it is not hard at all to become a soundcloud rapper or rapper in general. The term soundcloud rapper is not an insult nor compliment. I believe it to just be a pronoun for me making music on soundcloud.

Ijustice Avery Capstone

Baseball has always been a big part of my life, so I wanted my capstone to have something to do with baseball. After some thinking I decided to have a youth baseball clinic to try to give the new young players things to work on to make them better players. I organized it so I could have a younger group which consisted of kids from grades 3-5 and an older group which consisted of kids from grades 6-8. After deciding what my capstone would be and who it would be open to, there was a long process that followed so my capstone would be complete.

First, I had to find a spot to hold my event. My old baseball coach has an indoor baseball facility so I felt like that would be the best place to have it. To let people know about my capstone I had to do some advertising. I thought it would be best for me to make a flyer and pass it out to various teams and parents. I did some research and found out when teams would be practicing and where. After I gathered this information I went around to these practices and gave my flyer to team coaches and parents and I explained what my event would consist of. I also had people myself included post about the event on social media. After the advertising aspect of my capstone was complete, the organizing part had to start. I had to design what I would be doing in my event. I did some research and found some good drills for youth players and I found a way to incorporate them into my event. I realized that with all the things I would be doing it would be a lot for one person to handle. So I asked some of my friends who play baseball to help me run the event. I continued to advertise for my event until the week before I held it. After all of that the only thing that I had to do was hold my event.

I find that this source is reliable because the organization that wrote this article holds baseball clinics of their own.

Any small cretics can be crucial in a hitters swing. Hitting a baseball in one of the hardest things to do in sports so with any tips and drills will be very useful for a hitter.

My clinic is going to be mostly on fielding and hitting so this source will come in handy.

This source provides very quality information on how youth athletes get hurt and how to prevent injuries.

This source also provide you with some drills you could do to get your arms stronger so you can throw harder. These all are things that I could use or mention in the baseball clinic that I will hold. I found this source very helpful because it really relates to what I would be teaching.

To be specific they mentioned Emotional psychological development, social development, adult influences, program design, intellectual development, and many more factors.

This doesn’t only help me by providing me with things that I can use in my clinic but it also helps me on how to present and explain those drills and only things to the player that will participating in my baseball clinic


Aidan Williams Capstone

For my Capstone project, I decided to write a short album. I tried to write one song each month which tied into my experience throughout senior year and my High School experience in general. It was fun to work on, and I’m proud of the final product.

I wrote a whole bunch of music, but, as time went on, I tried to slim it down to the seven songs I felt were best suited to the project. I spent a lot of time writing, bits and pieces here and there, and towards the end I started to flesh out a lot of the parts I had written, and trimming many bits I didn’t think made sense. I spent a lot of time recording it through the equipment I have at home in GarageBand. It took a while, but I feel like the recordings themselves turned out well.

The songs are on a broad range of topics, from my experiences throughout my time at SLA, both in school and out, people I’ve met, things I’ve learned, and more. For better or worse, I’ve tried to condense my time here as much as possible.

Pattinson, Pat. (2011). Songwriting Without Boundaries. Writer’s Digest Books.

This book was gifted to me, and it has lots of information on lyric writing in music. I figured it would be a great source for my capstone, as I am going to be doing a lot of work on writing lyrics. I probably won’t read all of it, but the information in it is relevant and I think it will be very useful as I continue my work for the project. Through exercises and practice, this book presents lots of information and assistance which I am excited to discover and use. I don’t know what else to say about it, it just seems like a great source.

There is always more to be learned, and more that can be done when it comes to songwriting, and I think just having an abundance of sources like this one with lots of small tips and tricks will help me a lot moving forward with this project. While not all the tips might be useful, I think that it is still good to have this information, and, again, just the abundance of tips is great to have.

The word “ridiculous” is always an eye-catcher, so when I saw this website, I knew I had to take a look. I am choosing to use this source as yet another small set of tips, “ridiculous” tips, if you will, and, again, having that abundance of information is something that I think I’ll appreciate in the long run. It is written by a musician, which also helps, as it seems to be all from experience. “Ridiculous” might be an overstatement, but I’m excited to use this advice as I move forward with completing my project.

This is like my second source, but more in depth. I am choosing to use it because, while it is still a set of tips and tricks, it seems much more in depth, and, while I haven’t taken time to read it carefully, I think that there is a whole lot to unpack from this. I am excited to delve into it, and I think that it will work wonders as I move forward on my project. Also, yet again, the tips and tricks are from accomplished musicians. I haven’t heard of all of them, so they might not be as accomplished as the website claims, but it should be useful nonetheless.

One thing I often have trouble with as a songwriter is picking chords. That’s why I think that having a chart with many chords on it will be very helpful moving forward with the project. It will give me a wealth of new sounds and progressions to explore, and I think that having the information should make my project much more interesting by the end. I’m surprised I haven’t tried to find or use one of these before. It seems very comprehensive as well, and, with some practice, I think that it will be ‘instrumental’ to the completion of the project.

Also, the video is only seventeen minutes long, so the information should be condensed and easily picked up. I’m excited to use this source as I move forward with completing my project. It doesn’t have a lot of views, but it seems like it is exactly what I need.

Doubling up on types of sources I think will really help me moving forward with the project.

Having some outside influence and tips for writing melodies will be useful, as, really, one can only get better at stuff like this. I’m excited to learn new things about melody writing, as it isn’t something I’ve sought help for in the past. I think that it will be incredibly useful to my project as I continue to work on it.

The topic of my senior capstone project is Puerto Rico. I am Puerto Rican so this was a way for me to take advantage of learning more about my homeland. By doing this project I hope to learn more about my lineage. This project will helped me improve my research skills, and by the end of this project, I hope to learned a lot. I got to interview and meet a lot of people, one of which was a hairstylist who upon arrival to Puerto Rico, after the Hurricane Maria, found out her father had passed - in which she is pictured. I learned about the culture and the highly catholic population, in which people always had faith in unity. For this project I created multiple art pieces 5 of my favorite are attached, each corresponding stories for art piece for each piece created, creating a double portfolio. During this project I collaborated with clubs in Science Leadership Academy (SLA) to coordinate, drives for Puerto Rico, as well as doing some on my own in collaboration with the first Spanish Baptist Church of Philadelphia,  during the hurricane recovery after hurricane season. I also, used Latino club as an outlet to interview students. The people of Puerto Rico were beyond grateful for things such as canned food, and paper towel. In some places, people didn’t have water and food for weeks and were left to eat dogs and cats. I have gained a new appreciation for Puerto Rico as a whole, their unity inspired me beyond words.

For my capstone, I started writing a short story called Project: Retina. I have been thinking about this book since I was nine and was excited to finally put this idea on paper. I was really happy when I was able to use this idea to finally show what my imagination is capable of. However, I ran into multiple problems. More than I had anticipated. One problem was fleshing out the idea. Since this idea was made when I was nine, it had some problems. It didn't have a clear plot, didn't have fleshed out characters and no clear ending or beginning. Another problem was that because of the previous problems mentioned, I kept restarting. Multiple times, I started over, slightly changing the plot, until I was happy. Unfortunately, when I was happy, I only had a month left to write this book. So I am worried that this book is inadequate with words but I did try my best to get to a point I was happy with.

​For my capstone project, I explored multiple genres of creative writing. For the first part of the year, I wrote a small play where I collaborated with the students of Science Leadership Academy to come up with a performance even though we didn't get to the performance, the students of Science Leadership Academy helped me better understand playwriting and the work that goes into it. It also helped me build a small community within SLA  that helped me better understand the genre of playwriting. In the middle of the year, I researched monologues where I wrote several monologues as a response to a tv show 13 reasons why. The end of the year I created a poetry book called Hope this helps which also is my final product. I went through numerous genres of creative writing and it was a hard long and stressful process because when it comes learning about different creative styles, you need to know that it will require a lot of your time. Even though exploring different creative writing styles was a little difficult and time-consuming. I learned a lot about myself and the genres. I learned that playwriting isn't just writing its visualizing, and monologues aren't just stories their personalities and poetry isn't just symbolism, it's a story.

I chose this source because I want my stage directions to be clear and concise and I knew the best way was to research a place that knew how to do that best.. I found this source very useful because unlike the other sources it just focused on stage directions ,speech directions and cues, and location spots. I didn't know there were so many ways to do stage directions and so this helped get me a better idea of how to tell people where to go. The only limitation of this source is that it didn't give great examples.

When I started my capstone, I had a vision to engage kids from my area in STEM. By the end of the project, I hoped to gain a deeper understanding of how to work with younger kids. I also hoped to refine my coding and engineering skills. Overall,  my most important goal was to actually inspire the kids to pursue engineering when they get to highschool and college. These goals were appropriate for me because I have been involved with engineering every year at SLA. Personally, growing up in a school lacking in resources and with a weak STEM curriculum, I was not exposed to any substantive science, technology, engineering, or math projects until high school. I have had the privilege of attending a immersive, project-based high school. This is a privilege that unfortunately many kids hailing from my socioeconomic background do not have. Partnering with the West Philadelphia Community Center, in addition to my debate mentoring program, I explored several STEM related topics with a group of black children over 5 sessions.  During these sessions, I gauged their interest about circuitry, NXTs, and Arduino to design an event that is an appendage of my capstone. This event will be open to disenfranchised youth across Philly and will be funded by Braskem. I felt that I could not just cap my capstone at the five sessions because I have the capacity to do more given my funding. I will also be designing a website that will include all of the STEM programs I have participated during my high school career, to keep the kids engaged even after the two hour event is over. I will launch the website during the event to solidify the kids’ interest in STEM and ensure they will continue to pursuit STEM programs afterwards. I am so happy to have had this experience because I met a group of talented, underprivileged kids who taught me more about myself than I could have ever anticipated. The sessions became more about STEM and we had discussions about issues affecting black inner city youth as well. I really feel like I planted a seed of curiosity in their lives, but also acted as a big sister/mentor to these kids.

I think this will come in handy when I am articulating my pitch for Braskem funding. It specifically details a non-profit organization’s journey of bringing STEM to less affluent communities. Although my capstone is not a non-profit, I can still gain insight on why there is such a need for a capstone like mine. It will educate me so that I will be able to inform others on why I am doing my capstone, not with emotion, but with empirical data that highlights the lack of representation in the STEM field.

When brainstorming ideas for Capstones, I knew I wanted to created change within my local community by using something I learned in high school.Before SLA, my knowledge of engineering was very minute because the science department at my local neighborhood school was terrible. I knew that I had to do my part somehow in exposing younger underrepresented kids in southwest to engineering before they apply for high schools, in hopes that they apply to SLA or schools offering similliar engineering programs. Over the years, I have learned that programs that preach about career opportunities do not really engage and inspire young children.  This article corroborates the fact that programs that allow low income students to work with circuitry and robots are the ones that actually plant a seed of interest.

This is the larger goal of my project, A lot of the time, low income, teens of color feel trapped in their situation. They do not see any form of social mobility in their neighborhood so they are often discouraged when it comes to school and their future. I want to solidify that confidence in them and make them realize all that they are capable of through these workshops.

Just by being involved with SLA’s robotics team, I have had access to scholarship, extracurricular, and mentorship opportunities. Being involved with engineering could even inspire the kids in my college to seriously pursue a college degree when they are older.

Neuroplasticity occurs during normal brain development when the immature brain first begins to process sensory information through adulthood.  This is important to teens because you can train your brain to study better and instill a growth mindset in your brain while you’re young. Neuroplasticity is especially high among teenagers, whose synapses are proliferating by the second. Teenagers are very impressionable due to this reason. I will utilize this source to corroborate why i chose sixth and seventh graders for my target audience. Their brains are developing and new information makes a resounding impact on them. I know that if I can get these kids to attend two or three workshops, the experience will stick with them for a long time.

Lego Mindstorms are very helpful  for understanding the logic behind engineering and coding. I initially wanted to frame my workshops on my summer internship working with Arduinos. Upon talking to my in school mentor, I realized that coding from scratch would be a hard feat for middle school students. Working with circuits and NXTs will inspire the kids to think about engineering in a building-block kind of way. Once they learn these rudimentary skills, developing raw coding skills in the future will be much easier for them.

My workshops will be voluntary so I need to make sure that they are interesting so that people actually come. I found some helpful tips such as starting class with a warm up using movement to keeps kids focused. I will incorporate these tools into my teaching.

Saamir Baker Capstone

For my capstone, I decided to create the College Access Leadership (CAL) program at SLA Beeber. ​This program creates an additional bridge between advisories, advisors and college counselors by having a student from each senior advisory work as an intern for a band every other day. The interns or CALS do presentations for their advisories to relay information from the college office to the seniors. The reason why I decided to make this my capstone is I thought it has been a very productive program throughout my time as a CAL myself so when I discovered that SLA Beeber didn't have this program I knew that this would be the thing for me to tackle.

Rockets Fine-Tune for Playoffs; 6-Run Eruption in Extras Tops Lincoln

After both starting pitchers retired all batters faced in the first it seemed as if the rematch between SLA and Lincoln would be a pitcher's duel. But Senior Ijustice Avery had something different in mind. After patiently working a full count Justice finally got "his pitch" and drilled a towering shot to dead center. Lincoln's starter whipped around quickly, as did their outfielders, and then they all just watched it clear the fence for a lead-off Home Run.  Avery quietly, yet confidently rounded the bases while the entire SLA bench came out to greet him as he touched down on home. In a season full of close games that haven't always gone the Rockets' way, a rare moment of pure elation came over the squad and silenced Lincoln's boisterous bench. 


In the 2nd starting pitcher Freshman Vince Cammisa and the SLA defense pulled off a gem of a 1-2-3 Double Play to get out of a bases loaded jam on a hit back to Vince who came home for the force. Avi's throw and Leo Cassel-Siskind's scoop beat the runner to end the inning.  In the top of the 3rd Cammisa worked a Walk, advanced to 2nd on a Passed Ball, stole third and scored on Avi Cantor's deep Sac Fly to make it 2-0. A couple of solid hits in the 3rd helped Lincoln make it 2-1, but Freshman Cam Simms's Double in the 4th scored Sophomore David Hammond to make it 3-1. 


Both pitchers and defenses bent but didn't break over the next two frames, until Lincoln broke through with a pair of runs on hard ground balls to tie it up at 3-3. The sixth and seventh innings were tense. Both squads put runners in scoring position and tried to rattle the relievers, but golden opportunities fell short and the game went into extra innings. 


It's fitting that Ijustice Avery would start it off again, this time with a rope of a single to center, then reliever David Hammond made a productive out, essentially bunting Justice over into scoring position. Patience in moments like these are a premium, but freshmen Cam Simms, Jakob Cantor and Junior Leo Cassel-Siskind all showed they had plenty working deep counts, with Jakob and Leo drawing critical Walks to load the bases. 


AND HERE IT IS. EVERY KID’S BASEBALL DREAM:

Extra Innings, bases loaded, two outs, your team's season essentially on the line. 


Regardless of what happens, moments like these are remembered for a lifetime, playing out over and over again in glorious memories or haunting nightmares. But Senior Alex Gomez didn't over think and just turned on the first pitch he saw, driving a laser beam into the right center gap, clearing the bases.  And there it was again, that collective pure joy that has eluded this squad in moments just like this in recent weeks. 


With the top of the order coming up Lincoln's coach didn't risk any more runs and lifted his pitcher for the starter the Rockets had previously faced. The switch didn't work out as Senior Tony Brown hit a hard grounder and beat out a throw for an infield single. Starter Vince Cammisa helped his own cause with a double to score Tony. Two pitches later he stole third and scored on a passed ball. Suddenly a tense, 3-3 nail-biter had transformed into a lopsided 9-3 affair. 


But just as quickly as SLA could start to celebrate Lincoln scrapped back with three runs on four consecutive singles and two wild pitches to make it 9-6 with no outs recorded. Suddenly those extra runs off Cammisa's double and aggressive base-running was the difference in the game. But Freshman Jakob Cantor showed composure, attacking the next two hitters and striking out both. With a runner on 3rd and the top of the order coming up Cantor looked determined to shut the door. Then just as he was about to deliver he caught the runner on 3rd off guard and instigated a textbook run-down to end the game. 


With the 9-6 win the Rockets split the season series with Lincoln and further prove that this City Championship is  up for grabs. Just two games remain vs Masterman to round out the season. Wins in both will secure a top-seeded finish for the Rockets and a home playoff game in Mt. Airy on Mon, May 21st.

My capstone was to research the writing style of Mythical Realism and apply it to a collection of short stories I would write. I wanted to learn about the process of writing a choose your own adventure story that incorporated Magical Realism and multiple types of perspectives and writing styles. I would definitely say that I spend too much time on the research, and unfortunately underestimated the amount of time I would need to write. Thus I have labelled by project unfinished, and to be continued on my own time as a personal project. I saw my capstone as more of a learning process than writing a book, even though that was my original goal. I feel as if I have strengthened my skills, confidence, and understanding when it comes to creating and developing a story. I spent a lot of time reading and annotating other books, and I think one of the hardest things I had to learn was how to just start writing. I felt extremely unprepared when I first did so, and I went through at least four drafts for most of my stories. I somewhat regret this, but I hope that when I eventually complete it, the collection is something I can be proud of.

Yafang Wu Capstone

For my capstone, I decided to work with holograms, as a hologram is something that interests me, and holograms involve different kinds of engineering that I am not very familiar with, electrical engineering and coding.

In my final product, there is a port which takes the input from a laptop, process it through an Arduino Nano, then display it on a TFT LCD screen. Then the information displayed on the LCD screen reflect onto a mirror, then to a piece of translucent acrylic glass. The whole thing is connected to a pair of glasses frame, and the wearer can read information from the acrylic glass through their right eyes.

My capstone did not end up exactly where I wanted it to be, I was imagining something better, but I did not have the skills to do that yet. I do plan to continue working on it throughout college. Since it did not turn out to be as good or as small as I wanted it to be, I decided to have some fun in the end, and I made the case very spiky, and I named my final product “Spiky”.

In the end, not only did I learned electrical engineering and coding, I also had a lot of fun and learned things about myself.

​The main reason behind doing this project is because of how open my heart is to any and everyone. I consider myself to be a great listener and a leader. Considering the fact that I grew up in a household where I was the youngest; I've always wanted to know how it felt to have a younger sibling. With this being said, I have always been attached to having like a big sister relationship with young people that I encounter with. In certain conversations that I have with younger children, I started to realize that they open up to me which makes me feel very special and trustworthy. Having a love for listening to other people and giving the best advice I possibly can is why I decided to mentor/ teach younger girls for my senior project. Twice a week I traveled to West Philadelphia Achievement Charter Elementary School and met up with my mentor. We came up with different topics and activities for the girls each time we met. I had the opportunity to teach and work with each girl individually. Being with these young girls has taught me a little bit about myself and others each time I attended. Patience is definitely the key to success when working with younger children because children around that age can get distracted very easily. This experience with these 5th grade girls shaped and formed my mindset which made me a better me and just appreciating the small things in life considering the fact that these girls have been through a lot.

When I first reviewed this source I automatically thought this one would be perfect for the mentoring aspect of my capstone. Knowing the steps of achieving that great mentor role puts me in a position of  of actually being a good mentor. This is why I think it's important to have this discussion with younger girls to inform and remind them about how beautiful they are no matter what. Some days there will be times where you feel insecure but don't let that change anything about yourself.

It is important for me to know this because sometimes things can get out of hand and they can start to talk to one another and get off task. This website helps because it helps me make a decision on what I need to do in order to get them back on track and pay attention. Considering the fact children want to have fun when learning I understand that things will get a little off task. It is important for me to know how to handle that without getting upset and mad at them.

This source explains why it is good to have an after school program and how it can help a young mind mature and just have fun instead of being in trouble. Taking the minds and stress off of young ones is important so they can grow up and know what they like so they can keep themselves busy when in a stressful situation. It is important for kids to grow up being involved in positive things. It is proven that an active mind is a great mind to have especially when young.

William Dos Santos Figueiredo Capstone

My capstone was a website for any new upcoming student interested in playing soccer for the first time. The World Cup will be happening this summer, therefore, there will be an influx of new interested players, who will want to give soccer a try. I know this, because my first year in this school, was after the 2014 World Cup, where there were over thirty people attempting to play, and many of them had no clue on how the game was played. 
As I was doing this I thoroughly enjoyed learning new things about a sport in which I grew up playing, which I never expected existed. This sport is extremely complicated and it takes a lot to understand, however, it can also be simplified and explained properly and that is what I try to achieve with my website. I am proud and happy with my final product as I have placed a lot of time and work into it. I wish that many people who are interested in playing soccer for the first time will come to my website, where they will receive plenty of information which will perfectly help them on their journey.
In this project, I touched upon the sport in general such as real players and how the world of soccer worked, as well as fitness and the proper training in which these new players must go through to progress and improve. There is also a timeline of their performance and progress as they will know when they are making the right progress, as well as where to go from there. Those interested are also able to subscribe to the website as more posts will be released regarding soccer.
