MP1 Art Blog and Artist's Statement

1. Printmaking is the transferring of an image from one surface to another.

2. The invention of printmaking was revolutionary, because books were now faster to make at a large scale.

Printmaking was used during the American Revolution to make newspapers without the invention of printmaking it would have been difficult to mass produce newspappers/

This print interests me because there is a lot more toon it than it appears there are many intricate designs that mean something and tell a story

In the print I notice that there are many very small details that the artist took time to create which shows to me how much passion the artist has for the art of printmaking

Luke Watson-Sharer Capstone

My benchmark began the beginning of my junior year, not on purpose as I began to work at the Penn museum for my ILP. I began doing light research and presentations in the galleries and eventually writing and presenting tours. What I wanted to do was create and write my own tours for people there and SLA classes for my capstone. It was something I understood but was also comfortable with and I had the ability to do so since I’ve been working there a while.

I originally had written three tours but only presented two. I presented two of them to groups at the Penn museum and 1 to the SLA students. The topics were Numismatics in ancient Rome and modern day American currency and Tradition and culture in old Africa and what we wouldn’t have in the U.S. without it. I thought these would be relevant and interesting topics that people at SLA and elsewhere would be interested in since it felt very relevant and current. I presented the Rome tour to a group of around 10 at the museum where I engaged the crowd with a lot off questions allowing comparison. I then did the tour of Africa to SLA students and wanted to show them of the changes and things that we don’t put our mind to. I know our capstones are meant to integrate the SLA and other communities around us. I put together original work of engaging topics meant to allow students and people to consider history and its relevance to our lives today.

Final Stamp Design

FullSizeRender (22).jpg

The stamp above symbolizes me in many ways. The flower above is an orange blossom. An orange blossom has a meaning that many people don’t know about. The meaning is chastity, purity and loveliness. It’s a symbol of me because my heart is big enough for love and forgiveness and my purity is where God wants it to be. In my brainstorm, i used words such as loving, forgiving, funny, outgoing, outspoken, and creative. The orange blossom is my favorite flower.

When I brainstormed my words, I looked for words that had common meanings. At first, I was going to draw a diamond but I thought that's a diamond would be basic. So instead, I looked deeper and found characteristic traits that I never knew about myself. I realized that all flowers had meanings, so I researched my favorite flower and found out its meaning and how it connected with me.

The negative space is the white. The positive space is the flower. I chose to do it this way because I feel like the flower is a powerful and positive symbol. Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background. In this case, the flower is the mains focus.

Final Stamp Design

Obviously, my name is what I think represents me the most. I say it and hear it more than any other word. My name was one of the first words I wrote down during the brainstorming. Because of this, I decided to choose my first initial to be part of my stamp. At first, I chose a design that had a lot of lines that would be impossible to cut out because there was no negative or positive space. I had to start over. The importance of negative and positive space is so that the design can really pop out, and I think my cutout represents that well. Like I mentioned earlier, my original stamp was all lines. That was hard for me to cut out because when you draw lines, there is no negative space. Once I started to understand this, I realized it would be best if I started over and that’s how I ended up with this design.

Week 5 - Day 1 & 2 - Rubber stamp - Cut out

IMG_2389
IMG_2389

The task was to create an rubber stamp that described you as a person, now this might seem like an easy task but in reality it was the exact opposite. For me personally , I would consider myself a variety of things so to dim that down to little was a struggle for me. The fact that also can not draw was another struggle for me.

I started off trying to be very complex. I wanted to  make it different that was when my difficulties started. I had some many things that described and could not choose one, That is when I came up with the idea of combining some of them. Which to lead to my first stamp which was an emoji. A mixture of me being funny and outgoing.  After drawing my image finish it was then  I knew I would have trouble with cutting out the positive and  negative space so decided to go with a second approach. After going back to the drawing board a couple times I decided that I would be simple. I decided I would find a way to do my initials in a creative way. This is my final design as you can see above. The picture above symbolizes me in many ways. When to start of it is my. An I have such connection with this because it was not the name given my birth but I  identify with this more than the one given to me.

Both positive and negative space was very important when designing my stamp. I wanted to make my stamp visually interesting and made sure something stood out so I cut out certain parts that connect my initials. Instead of making one of my letters positive and the other negative I thought it would be best if both were positive so it has some type of unison to it.

Final Stamp Design

My Final Stamp Print
My Final Stamp Print
To first start off I originally had a overall layout of how my stamp would preferably look like. Then we had the assignment to make a list of words that described us in the best way. The assignment really changed the meaning of my stamp, tremendously. I was first going to write my name in a type of font and put things around it, but then I realized there is one overall thing that I am about. That is cooking and the word that stood out for that was "skillful". So I tweaked my whole stamp and dumbed it down to a chef's hat with my initials on each side of it. I now believe that this is something I could have for my own future business I wish to build from the ground and up.
The assignment was to create a printmaking stamp through positive and negative space. The final design, after I decided to not do the one before that, was brought up to show how clear my vision of me will be in the future.
The importance of negative and positive space is to show how a focus of a drawing can be complemented with a single or more background in a picture. In my drawing the complement of the background space suits it well and leaves a wide range of thought to the stamp itself.
Understanding the principles of this type of art is truly significant to all other art, I see now. If a or multiple focus and background are present the picture is showing negative and positive space. I got stuck around making sure my stamp didn't look my vision I intended. I learned to make sure your art looks like how you want it to, so your vision isn't confused with something that you dislike or didn't want. This can go far in the art world of negative and positive printmaking.

Final Stamp Design

IMG_20170514_164458662.jpg

When I started brainstorming the cut out stamp I wanted it to focus on something related to the sport of track and field. I decided on a simple design of track shoes but these design did not work because I could not draw the shoes properly. After the different spikes and track shoes designs did not work, I decided to move on from the shoe idea and draw an actual track. This stamp symbolizes me because since track and field is a major part of my life I find that most people know me for running track. My current events are 100m, 200m, 400 x 100 and long jump so I spend hours every day practicing or competing.

My first design of the track field was originally an entire track field with the word "determination" in the center but due t how long the word is I also had to scrap that idea. Finally I simplified it to a singular ring with the word "track" arranged into a peak formation. The orange negative space serves as a contrast to the purple positive space. The lack of negative space in the letter "A" it what helps create the peak formation. My biggest challenge was cutting out the letters for the circular track. The razors that I used kept ripping the paper and was terrible at cutting the curves.

With a steady hand, I glued all of my pieces together. The ridges formed along the field represent my challenges and progressions in life. In summary the important aspects of my life are summed up in a simplistic stamp design.TRACK is life!

For my capstone, I chose to do something that was important to me and the community. During my time at Science Leadership Academy, I've experienced first hand our school spirit which was very welcoming. School spirit is important to me because I feel like it very crucial in the “High School experience” but not only that I want to create a safe and friendly environment for everyone to feel welcomed and accepted here. No one should not feel welcome in a community they go to for 4 years. With times like this, we need to express love and compassion. I’ve been in the SLA spirit committee since my freshman year and now during my Senior year, I run it along with a friend of mine. Our goal was to strengthen our school community and so we’ve had several meetings discussing what to do.  Our first event of the school year was our Halloween costume contest. Keeping in mind that it had to be school appropriate, we wanted the students to dress how they wanted to dress for the contest. We’ve faced many challenges for this event like stage planning, how to get people to sign up, spread the word, and it definitely helped us with planning future events. Even though we still faced more challenges throughout the school year with our other events. Overall it was amazing to be apart of our community and to give back what was given to my during high school.

This source talks about why school environment is important since this is where our kids are spending most of their time at during the week. “Whether it's intuitive or cerebral, the thought leaders at these billion dollar corporations know that improving the poetics of space within a work environment optimizes every employee’s potential.” This type of thinking applies to the school environment as well. This link will help me get a better understanding of how the work environment can affect the workers or students in a positive way. School Spirit is a part of the school environment. Creating a safe classroom environment includes how does the classroom look to how do the students act in the hallways. “Students need to feel safe in order to learn. They need to feel secure in order to want to participate.” High School is a scary and huge transition from middle school so they already come in with that intuitive thought of “High school is all about social status”. While that is true, that type of high school system is seen more in bigger schools because it's harder to please a bigger group. This source will provide me a better understanding of how to create a better school environment.

What does school spirit really mean, for some it could be homecoming (Unfortunately here at SLA we have never had the luxury of a homecoming), pep rallies, spirit week and etc. Kelly describes the importance of all these events and the actual meaning of school spirit. “To me, school spirit means representing your school proudly through behavior that paints our school and community in a positive light, Raiders or no Raiders. Take the most recent night game.” This source will provide me moe insight on what school spirit really is and how to get others involved with that vision of school spirit.

Is appeal considered as school spirit? Lam talks about how schools take advantage of the freshman and senior class to get them to buy their overpriced apparel from the school store so they can show their “school spirit”. Freshman year you want to buy school apparel so you can show off your accomplishments while senior year you want something to remember your time at school. “Still, school pride need not depend on the institution you attend; it can also be formed through the relationships you have with others. That being said, smaller campuses, such as state colleges, have an advantage because they create an environment where students at least recognize each other, if not socialize together. The tight-knit community would ensure that school spirit thrives, so wearing collegiate clothing would be conventional” This source will enhance m understanding of what school spirit is.

The psychology of School spirit is much deeper than just loyalty to a school, for other it can have a much deeper meaning to it. The researchers separated a group of kids based off of their group alliances and then asked them series of questions that focus on school spirit and loyalty. “the students who were the most devoted to their school, to begin with, were also the most cooperative and helpful when forced to confront the school's failings. That is, those truest to their group redoubled their sense of service and commitment when faced with injustice. These results were immediate and short-term. That is, while some students stayed to help strengthen the group and correct its course, their commitment was unlikely to last for long.” This source will give me a better understanding of the positive effects of school spirit.

School spirit does a lot good that what people expect. It unites the school community for the common goal of school spirit, whether it's going to sports games to wearing the gear. Sugarman talks about how school spirit can bring people together and create a happy environment for all. “Spirit days united the greeks and the jocks and the drama kids and the musicians and the art kids because it created harmony. It gave us a common goal. And it even gave us a reason to embrace the teachers we didn’t like because they were usually the ones who revealed a totally different side of themselves when they got to show off their creative, spirited side. It leveled the playing field, is what it did. And gave us all a unique kind of license, just for that one day, to be as loud and obnoxious as possible. And sometimes, it even changed the course of our school experience, often bridging gaps between people who were never friends before they realized they shared this one, priceless bond.” This source will help me enhance my understanding of school spirit.

Reports from a High school survey finds that students who identify as coming from a “great school environment” are academically achieving more than students not coming from a great enjoyment school. from "From academic achievement to general happiness, the survey indicated a positive relationship to school spirit. Principals overwhelmingly believe it is important that they personally build school spirit at their school (89%) and that higher levels of school spirit are tied to higher student achievement."  School spirit is broken down into a science by researchers at EL find a better understanding of school environment. "Neuroimaging and neurochemical research support an education model in which stress and anxiety are not pervasive (Chugani, 1998; Pawlak, Magarinos, Melchor, McEwan, & Strickland, 2003). This research suggests that superior learning takes place when classroom experiences are enjoyable and relevant to students' lives, interests, and experiences. Many education theorists (Dulay & Burt, 1977; Krashen, 1982) have proposed that students retain what they learn when the learning is associated with strong positive emotion.” Not a lot of people realize how environments can affect one's thought, so it’s important to create that safer and better environment especially for students. A report on youth involvement in urban schools and how that can affect participation. Thinking beyond just school spirit but personal growth. When students are put in “positive growth” environment that has school spirit it helps with personal growth. "With respect to the educational sphere, the theoretical and empirical work of Eccles et al provides support for the “developmental mismatch” hypothesis — that is, that some problems in motivation and engagement in school that emerge in adolescence may be attributable to poor person-environment fitfor youth at the transition to secondary school(Eccles et al., 1993). While young people demonstrate growing capacity and desire for autonomy, youth perceive fewer opportunities to exercise autonomy and participate in making decisions and rules in junior high than they did in elementary schools (Midgley & Feldlaufer, 1987). Further, there is evidence that appropriate levels of decision-making and control are particularly salient for motivation and learning during the teenage years (Eccles et al.,1993). The present study draws on this developmental mismatch frame to investigate whether and how an innovative youth development intervention — youth-led participatory research — expands students opportunities to exert more power regarding policies and practices in two urban public high schools." This source enhances my knowledge on the psychological side of school spirit and school environment, which I can use to plan my our next events.

In order to make a safe environment for school, everyone must feel safe, respected, and each person contributes to the operations of the school. School spirit has to do with the school environment and how students feel about the school community.   "Research suggests that bringing everyone together to create a shared vision of the kind of climate they want increases the likelihood that the vision will actually be carried out. But according to Peter Senge, director of the Society for Organizational Learning that originated at MIT, a shared vision must emerge from our personal visions—otherwise, people won’t be committed to the shared vision." This source will help me get a better understanding of how to create a better environment using school spirit.

As a graduation requirement, I am challenged with creating a project that cultivates what I have learned in my four years at the Science Leadership Academy. The project must engage our 5 core values: Inquiry, Research, Collaboration, Process, and Reflection.

I wrote a short story e-book titled "Annabelle and the Garden". “Annabelle and The Garden” is a short story piece about one girl's curiosity and thankfulness. While on a class trip to her garden Annabelle learns about less fortunate people in her neighborhood. The garden is a symbolic place for growing and learning. Throughout the book Annabelle and readers are taught the value of family, gratitude, and love.

I am extremely passionate about children's education. It is my ‘life mission’ to ensure that every child I meet has access to books and quality education. In addition to my passion for literature, SLA has taught me the importance of community and gratitude. I asked myself, "How you can combine your literary passion and your love for the community?" From there, "Annabelle and The Garden" was born.

I created a website to serve as a home for "Annabelle and The Garden" and my senior capstone. This website is not just a home for my senior capstone. It's main function is to engage little readers with our beautiful planet Earth and the worlds in books all around them. On the “Lesson Plans’ parents/guardians and educators can perform experiments and activities with little readers.

My SLA admission interview ended with the question, "How can you make SLA a better place?". As my graduation ceremony approaches and my capstone process ends, I leave a similar question for you.  "How can you make the world a better place?"

"Annabelle and The Garden" is available for purchase on Barnes & Noble. You can also read an excerpt of the book on Barnes & Noble's website. All of the proceeds are being donated to KidsGardening.org. For 35 years KidsGardening has been a leader in the school gardening movement. They encourage garden based learning.

Final Stamp ~Art

image1 (2)
image1 (2)
This stamp is me. You see a basketball, with sunglasses and feet. The basketball simply represents my favorite sport. The sunglasses represent my personality and how cool, and relaxed I am. But as you can tell, this basketball has no arms, only legs. There's a reason behind that. The legs show that no matter what I'm determined to always keep moving, and to push forward in any situation.
The following assignments built up to this point. We were preparing for the cut by making other stamps, and learning about the art of positive and negative space. Negative and positive space is important because when you are painting or drawing, you must be able to see which is which. Positive space is important because it highlights every detail, and negative space is important because it helps bring out that detail. I used to get stuck at not being able to tell the difference, but now I'm an expert.
In conclusion, I can apply this to the real world. I'm glad I had the opportunity to learn this, and now I feel more prepared for art.

This stamp represents me because my stamp symbols talking out and speaking against controversial causes. My final design idea I just thought and said "What represents me?" and I feel like this represents myself. I brainstormed caring, smart, hard working, conscious. I picked a word of speaking out. When I was in 7th grade I went to a public speaking class and you never hid your opinions and that represented me. The importance of positive and negative space is important because when the symbol is opening its mouth it blends with the background. I got stuck doing this project with symbol ideas I constantly kept throwing away numerous amount of paper. I solved it by getting extra help and looking at examples . I learned that positive and negative space is a effective way to express art in a different way.

Strength Through Pain

When a person is growing, there are numerous events that they will go through. Some will bring happy memories that they will love, whilst some will bring sad, terrible, painful memories. Even though these painful memories will be hated because of the pain that is associated with them, they are truly needed. A life lived with only happiness will not reap the same result as that lived with constant pain. This is because, one cannot successfully become stronger without experiencing some form of pain.

There are numerous sayings, such as; “No pain, no gain”, “We only learn things the hard way”, and “From adversary comes strength”, that support this ideology. These sayings tie to a phenomenon known as post traumatic growth. Post traumatic growth was originally coined by psychologists Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun. Calhoun and Tedeschi interviewed numerous people that had gone through life changing events such as bereavement, housefires, serious illness, and becoming refugees. The interviews showed that by experiencing these horrific events, people gained what Tedeschi and Calhoun called “Positive life changes”. The people who were surveyed discovered skills they never knew they possessed, gained a new inner strength, and among other things became appreciative of life.

Another psychologist named Judith Neal, did a study with 40 people who went through post traumatic growth. Most of them stated that they initially had experienced “a dark night of the soul” where their values were questioned and life seemed to have no meaning. This caused them to go through a phase of spiritual searching where they tried to understand what they went through and find new values. Then they went through a stage that Neal called spiritual integration. In this stage they applied the new principles to their life and found a gratitude for being alive and for experiencing such an event. For the people that Neal surveyed it can be concluded that suffering had brought them to a new and stronger place in life. The surveyed people may have lost everything physically and internally (based on the questioning of the principles), but among their newly gained principles, they had also gained a new mental strength to face such traumatic events and persevere through them.

From a physical perspective, pain also makes a person stronger. This is most evident in cases such as that of the Shaolin monks. These monks are notorious for their practices that involve striking others with steel poles, receiving numerous kick to the groin, and essentially inflicting pain upon oneself. The monks conduct these activities because they believe that it strengthens the body part that is being hit, and scientifically they are right. Gradually the pain that is being inflicted gets stronger and stronger. Once a person’s body gets used to one level of pain the next level is brought. This process takes numerous years to occur and has resulted in monks being able to do things such as bending steel with their necks and being able to withstand a hit to the groin as if nothing has happened. This just goes to show of how pain can strengthen people.

Normally when someone hears the word pain, negative thoughts are the only ones that seem to arise. People fail to note that pain, and negativity in general, can bring strength. Traumatic events can cause one to reach new levels that they have never presumed possible. The process may not seem easy and may not be fun, but the rewards that will be reaped will be great.

Week 5 - Day 1 & 2 - Rubber stamp - Cut out

File_000 (6)
File_000 (6)

This assignment/project corresponds to the negative and positive space discussion we have had in class. This project itself was done over the course of about 2 weeks. During the first day, we had to brainstorm ten words that we thought resembled ourselves. Next step was to pick three out of the ten words you felt best described you, and find images that represent those three words. Then after finding those images, sketching each one of those images out. After drawing those images out we had to combine all of the drawings together in a way that showed both positive and negative space. Once we did that we had to cut out the positive space and glue the negative space onto a piece of construction paper. The three words I picked were compassion, August, active, and creative. The pencil is used to represent my creativeness in many different ways. In terms of writing, drawing, and designing. The Leo sign is representing my birth month, the hands in the shape of a heart symbolize the great amount of compassion I have within me, and the track lines represent my activeness. This project was quite interesting because it not only got to increase my understanding of what negative and positive space is and how to show it. but also getting to show others, such as my classmates some things that represent me and to give them a chance to get to know even more about me.

Rockets Blast Masterman 9-0; Secure Top 4 Finish and Sweet Sixteen Berth

Screen Shot 2017-05-13 at 3.10.53 PM
Screen Shot 2017-05-13 at 3.10.53 PM
After what started out as a pitching duel between Captain Lukas Supovitz-Aznar and Masterman's ace Shanahan, the Rocket bats came to life in the 3rd and never looked back. Senior Aaron Watson-Sharer smashed a 2nd pitch for a Double over the Leftfielder's head to kick off a 4-run 3rd that saw every Rocket bat. In what must have felt like "Groundhog Day" for Masterman, Watson-Sharer led off the 4th with another big Double, this time to deep Center to get things started. Another four Rockets would cross the plate after a Double by Senior Leon Finney, Single by Junior Tony Brown and a 2nd Double (and 4th RBI) by Senior Supovitz-Aznar who went 3-4 at the plate and got the win on the mound striking out 6 and surrendering just 2 hits. Senior Ben Simon, who shut down Central last week only allowing 2 hits and no earned runs, continued his hot hitting with two more Singles and 2 RBIs to make it 9-0 after five.

Fire power of this sort had been an early season signature for a team most known for their shut-down pitching, which catapulted a unified squad up from C into the Top Division in the Public League over the past four seasons. After some tough losses in the middle of the year the win secured a Top 4 finish and an automatic berth into the Round of Sixteen starting on Mon, 5/22. Two rounds of playoff games will unfold on the 17th and 19th to determine their first opponent. Meanwhile, The Rockets will play St Joe's Prep in FDR Park at Ashburn Field on Tues, 5/16 to prepare for another deep run toward a City Title, AAA Championship and chance at representing the city of Philadelphia in the PIAA State tournament.

Final Stamp Design

The smiley face and the frowny face are both part of a venn diagram, which symbolizes the concept of finding the middle path, or accepting what is while accepting what needs to change. The pencil represents my love of art, as well as writing (which is also an art). The thought bubble represents my philosophical side, and how my mind is constantly going at 100 mph (This is where the exclamation point comes into play). The rainbow is a display of my extreme gayness. And then there are some hidden secrets to this design, that you will only understand if you know me quite well.  I had to draw this out multiple times, and get past the grueling criticism of my friends, before deciding on this design. First, I had to come up with a list of ten words that describe me. This seemed a daunting task at the start, but I quickly wrote down over 15 words. Then, I was faced with the instruction to narrow down the list to three. This was where I handed the computer with my list on it to a close friend, who proceeded to highlight the qualities on the list that best describe me. Positive and negative space play an important role in my design, because of the distinction between the image and its background. I got really stuck with trying to have the confidence to include a few specific symbols on here. And I got really really stuck with how to turn the image into positives and negatives. The words I originally used were: Creative, Emotional, Philosophical, Hyper, Cringeworthy, Queer in all meanings of the word, Activist, Flawed, Extreme, Goofy, Impulsive, and Intelligent. All of these ended up incorporated into the design somehow.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

I believe “Without Education you’re not going anywhere in this world”  a quote stated by Malcolm X.  When I was a child and even still now as a young lady I learned that   education was the key to success. My father told me  that I could be anything I wanted to be if I stayed in school and put my mind to it. In school I would be educated in history, math, science, and english and at home I would learn about my culture, learn about how to be a lady and how to carry myself. I believe we were put on this earth to learn and not just in school but outside of school too, because education does not stop at the limits of a text book. Education is a never ending rainbow of things to be learned and mastered.Even after you mastered it, it doesn't mean that there isn’t another part of it you didn’t know about because that’s how education works. In this world today we are not going very far because people have turned to nothing but quotes from friends instead of looking things up and researching and talking to people who know about the subject. We have stop educating ourselves. We have stopped asking questions and let someone else answer for us , a person who knows nothing. We have become lazy and that is when progression stops because learning has become a backseat to opinions.Education is important to you and society and we let that slowly slip away because education is no longer more important than instagram likes and no longer more important than how many retweets you get. I believe that education needs to once again take a million steps forward because without it we are a sinking society. I don’t think one day that  everyone will be education but I do believe it takes one step at a time and one person needs to start learning and than teaching other people to learn and ask questions and it will start a ripple effect. The word education is slowly drifting down a river of lost definitions because we forgot how to define and while some people are  very good at defining it, it just isn’t enough. It isn’t enough people to educating themselves and not enough people stepping up to the plate to teach others because we have become so reliant on everyone else that our brains no longer have to think their becoming rusting machines and  the only oil that can help them is a book. The only only that can help us an ignorant society is the  willingness to break boundaries and go outside of ourselves to learn new things. We have become so  into not learning and if we do than just learning about ourselves that we have forgotten that their is a world out there we don’t know  about. I believe that Education has to come back to being the linebacker because all we have are towel boys or girls . Without Education the world is nothing, we are nothing, you are nothing, I am nothing because learning is the key to surviving.

Final Stamp Design

Creating this stamp, I wanted to think of a symbol that, obviously, symbolizes me. I thought, what would be a better symbol than myself? So I wanted to highlight key features of myself that makes me, myself.

Previously, we were given the assignment to come up with three symbols. The symbols were supposed to match the adjective that you chose to describe yourself. I had few adjectives, but the ones that stood about to me were Affectionate, Generous, and Reliable. For affectionate, it was a figure with open arms. For generous, I drew a figure of open hands reaching out. For reliable, I simply drew a flexing arm in a fist. I didn’t feel as though any of the symbols really got out what I wanted to depict. So I decided to create myself.

In my design, the negative and positive space both are used to highlight my features. I cut out the positive space which is my hair, and other facial features.  To contrast, I left negative space to highlight the features.

Understanding positive and negative space was a really slow process for me personally. I had an idea, but I would always get confused when I would try it out on my design. I used inspiration from others, realizing that they were simply cutting out the spaces that they colored in to highlight the spaces they weren’t cutting.

Final Stamp Design

Hi my name is Jayden Tull and this my stamp design. My stamp design is a dog. I made it a dog because the stamp is suppose to represent us and who we are. I picked a dog because dogs loving, playful, smart, strong, and loyal, all qualities I consider myself to have. Now I didn’t make this cut out for my amusement, it was an assignment. The assignment was to make a positive and negative space cut out of an image that represents you. What is positive and negative space you ask? Negative space is when you have a picture that has one main part shaded in or around the picture.and positive space is the fill out of the image. So when you look at my stamp the white is negative space giving it the shape and the brown is the actual image that you are seeing giving it dimension. Don’t worry if you don’t understand positive and negative space just yet, I was stuck for a second too. I could look at a picture and tell you which was which but making it for myself was a struggle. You had too see things that wasn’t even there because it wasn’t cut out yet so you have to draw and plan for that. I personally struggled with that but with help from friends and my teacher I was able to make my stamp. After doing this assignment I learned that we see positive and negative space everyday. One way we see it is shadows. All shadows are is positive and negative space. Thanks for viewing hope you enjoy.

Final Stamp Design

negativeandpositive
This symbolizes me in many ways. First is that it is my initials N-Naseem A-Awni H-Hameid. The word that is spells out, "N.A.H", also symbolizes me because my grandfather always told me "Not a hesitation". The way it is messed up and not neat is very special too, because in my mind nothing is perfect.
The place that I mostly got stuck at is knowing where to cut it out because I was not there for a lot of the classes so, I had no idea what negative and positive space and where to cut out my stamp. So in the process of drawing it I was given a mini lesson from my different classmates. If I had more time to I would edit it a lot more.

Stamp cut out

For the pass 4 class periods in art, We were given a task to create a stamp that represents me. My own symbol that everybody can see and know that its mine. We first started with a sketch. My first idea represented me the most because it related back to the thing i love music. So i made an MPC with a hawaiian print behind it. It was a good design up until i realised that i couldn't use it. It wasn't a good design to be cut out into negative space. I then decided to make an old 60s style TV. Why? because i like old fashioned stuff and my first album had an "old look" to it. I started designing and came up with a perfect concept of where the positive and negative space was going to be. After i figured that out, i continued to cut it out on the last day and put it on paper. overall, i like the way my stamp came out. I feel like i did exactly what the objective was and describe myself in an image. And because of the thought and work i put into it, it all came together and made a art piece i love.

Final Stamp Design

This is my stamp, and it is the letter S. I choose to have this as my stamp because the letter S is one of my initials. The letter S is special to me. I always write the letter like that when I write out my name. I always like to have my name stand out. The three words that describe me are spectacular, smart, and scintillating. These adjectives start with the letter S and so does my name. In my picture the negative space is the cut out of the letter. The rest of the stamp is positive. From doing this stamp I was able to visualize the negative and positive space.

Final Stamp

When I first started brain storming ideas for mt stamp I really focused on myself and thought of ways that I could be in my stamp. My first design were my initials over lapping but the problem was that stamp the way the lines intersected couldn't be cut out in perfect positive or negative space. There were always odd lines that didn't look right and would come in and out of positive and negative space. Back to the drawing board I went.
I thought of what something that I could do that showed who I am but wasn't to difficult to be made into positive or negative space. I searched images and there was a picture of a skyline. i immediately knew that the skyline had to be in my design, it represented my home.
Positive and negative space was very important when designing my stamp. I first started drawing the sky line itself and decided that would be the positive space of my stamp but when I looked at it, it was very plain and boring. I decided to write philly but in negative space so that it would be an actual part of the sky line and not some separate piece. i wanted to make my stamp visually interesting.

My stamp is my nickname most people call me by, so I am embracing my nickname in my stamp for people to know. I wanted to do my initials for my idea but it wasn’t working because it was difficult to make my letters inside each other and having a negative space. I found my last design because I found examples to guide me in the internet. I can make letters from positive and negative but I got stuck when I had to visualize it so it can show it. It was challenging and I’m still struggling but with more practice.

Final Stamp Design

For this project, we had to show our knowledge about negative and positive space. So what we had to do was create a stamp using negative and positive space. To start off our stamps, we had to come up with words that we think would symbolizes us. I decided to go with the word "fresh." The reason I chose this word was because I have been using it ever since I was 10. I just came up with it for my PSN account and now I use it for most of my social media accounts. Then we had to come up with a design that has no line drawings for our stamp. After we had our design, we had to cut out the positive space. After this, we had to glue it to our sketchbook, take a photo of it, and make a blog about it. When I was coming up with the design, I decided to make the letters positive space because they were the things I want the audience to focus on. I did this because in most advertisements and logos, I noticed that the things that they want us to focus on is the positive space. I also learned that positive space and negative space in designs are usually different colors. Since I learned this, I made the letters orange and chose a white paper to be the background. I also made the letters in a custom to make the stamp more interesting and less dull. I added the sparkle there also to do the same thing.

"Final Stamp Design"

Untitleddocument (17)
  • During my whole life from before I was born to right now I've been influenced by islam, everywhere I go I keep Allah(It means The One True God) in my life. He has made me a strong person, a kinder person, a loving brother to all my sister and brothers in islam, a followers of all the prophets including Jesus, Moses, and Muhammad(peace be upon them all), and many others before. This stamp doesn't only represent me, but all the people of the world, the last prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) said, each child is born muslim, but it is after that their parents make them turn Jew, Christian, or a  Zoroastrian, this was said by an illiterate man, which proves that God had sent this message to him by sending angel Gabriel, the leader of all angles. Allah also says, "I created my servants in the right religion but devils made them go astray", another things all says regarding our belief,Allah explained that when He created Adam, He caused all of Adam's descendants to come into existence and took a pledge from them saying, Am I not your Lord? To which they all replied, "Yes, we testify to It".These are some of the reasons why the stamp symbolizes me, and I will always believe, because Allah wants me to believe, he have us to do with our lives as we wish, but at the end we will return to him alone. The words I used in my brainstorming were: Funny, Energetic, Different, Religious, Friendly, Serious,Myself,Patient,Respectful, and Peaceful.
  •  The assignments were unique in their own ways, everyday I went through a different process to arrive at a point where I feel that, I've mastered stamp making, and printing. At first I was confused about how to approach this assignment, but once I've seen a couple of examples, it's become a second nature to me. To get to the final design I've been through some difficult phases where I had a sense of looking for help, but Ms.Hull has taught me that people won't always be around guiding you where to go, you must do your best, and push yourself to your limits.
  •  Negative and positive space really help make everything easier to see and focus on, it enables your mind to stay focus on thing at a time to make sense of what you are looking at. It also helps to not overload the space, and really puts a sense of space and mobility, which the brain likes, Who would like to live in a house that is filled with objects everywhere you see? No One, everyone once a nice space to breath and relax.
  • Explain the process of truly understanding negative and positive space. Where did you get stuck? What problems did you have to solve? What did you learn about negative and positive space along the way? The process you must go through to truly understanding negative and positive space is for me trial and error, you must make a mistake multiple times to know how annoying it is to keep on making the same silly mistakes. In my mind I associate positive space with dark colour, and negative space with light colour because it's mobile and free. I got stuck when cutting out the positive and negative space, because most of the time I'm afraid to make mistakes, but again that's how you learn. I had to solve how to make my stamp strong, and the way I did that was by using strips of tape and putting them directly onto the drawing, and cutting the additional tape away. I learned that negative and positive space are filled all around us, and that most people don't even realize our brains automatically use negative and positive space, to keep us aware of our surroundings.
