Advance Art Q3

Self-Small Portrait

When I first found out that we had to draw a self-portrait, I was nervous and shocked because that’s my main weakness and I don’t draw people a lot. I cannot draw people for anything especially myself because it’s something about it that I cannot get. When I did it though, it was hard but it wasn’t as hard that I thought it was going to be.

The way I started it was first, I found an angle that I was going to draw myself, and then, I started with the shape of my head. After that, I drew my eyes, nose, and mouth, and then did my hair. The last thing I did was draw in where my earrings would go and my neck.

The hardest part of this assignment was drawing the eyes, nose, and mouth because the eyes weren’t looking like mine and they weren’t realistic. The nose was okay but it was hard trying to get it the right size and to get it straight. The lips were also hard to get it to the right size and it was difficult getting the lips in the right part. The main difficulty with these features was lining them up right.

Color Wheel

I was excited when I found out that we had to a color wheel as an assignment because I love mixing colors and you could make your color wheel any kind of way. There wasn’t a specific way you had to do it; you were free to be creative with your color wheel. Also making a color wheel was easy to make because all you had to do was make different colors out of the primary colors.

I first choose the way I was going to do my color wheel, which was the basic circle, and then I drew the circle and split the circle into 12 parts. Second, I choose my paint and colored in the parts where the primary colors where suppose to go. After that, I mixed the colors and painted the rest of the parts.

The hardest part of the assignment was dividing the circle into 12 even pieces. No matter how many times that I tried to divide it, it wasn’t coming out straight.

Texture

I was confused when I first out that we had to do texture because I didn’t know what it meant. The only type of texture I knew is how something felt so I didn’t know how to draw texture. After the assignment have been explained I understood it more and thought that it was going to be easy.

When I did the snake first I, drew the outline of the body, then I marked with the head is on the snake and drew the scales and eye on the head. After that, I drew horizontal lines on the body of the snake then drew vertical line on certain areas of the snake that intersect the horizontal lines making the body of the snake look something like bricks. Finally I drew the scales and shaded some part of the bottom of the snake. The way I drew the hair is by first drawing the head and then the hair. Afterwards, I shaded in the dark and light parts of the hair. Finally, when I drew the water, first I drew the swan and then drew curve lines in front of the swan to make look like the water is moving. Next, I drew waves throughout the paper and smudged the pencil in a little to make it more realistic.

2 Point Perspective

I have never heard of two-point perspective until it was assigned to me. When I heard it, I thought that it was going to be hard because I didn’t know how to draw in two-point perspective. After looking at the assignment and how to do it, I saw that it was going to be easy.

The way I did the first picture (22nd & Arch) it that first I looked at how it was suppose to look, then I drew my horizon line and vanishing point. After that, I drew the buildings, street, and sidewalk. Then I put in the little details that I saw and did some shading where it was needed. For the second picture, first I drew my horizon line and vanishing points at the end of the line. Then, I spaced off where each letter in my nickname will be. After that I drew the letters and shaded the inside of the letters.

The hardest part of this assignment, would be trying to get the lines in the right places and at the right direction. This was hard for me because the lines would look really different then what it was suppose to be.

Shade

To me shading is easy and simple to me, so when I heard that we had to do an assignment that had something to do with shading, I was okay with it. When drawing something, I feel as though shading comes with the package because to make it more realistic, you would shade certain parts.

The way I started this assignment is that first I drew the square and then put in the circles where they was needed. After that, I shaded the parts that needed to be shaded by looking at the website that was given. The final thing I did was smudge in some parts to make it look right. I had to use different pencils then regular ones because the shading wouldn't come out like it was suppose to. So I used thicker pencils.

More Photography

Also I tried to focus on photography this quarter because I wanted to see how well I could create things so I also spent a lot of time outside of art class creating and editing photos. Below are my top 5 favorite photos. All of these I played around on Photoshop also and tried to enhance them in anyway that would look appealing.

Photography and Editing

I did photography around SLA for 4 class periods and here are the 5 best photos I've gotten. They were all also edited a lot so that they look original and also before they looked almost just plain but there was no fun lightings so I added that in myself. Overall with this it was neat to get to see how much I could change something but still have it look nice and it also taught me how to use photoshop better.

Stars Ceiling Tile

For this one of the students in my class created the same thing I am doing but instead doing it for the sun. I thought since the canvas is a ceiling tile it would look neat to have the sun on one part of the room and another on the other side.  To start I did a paper drawling first. Using charcoal and I made the full background blue. I used white to create a crescent moon and since you can see the shadow on the room I used a lighter blue then the background and filled in the rest of the moon. Afterwards I got a white and made swirls in the background to represent stars. The drawling can be seen below.

To make the ceiling time I did the same things but instead used paints.

Journaling TED ~~Why does food matter?~~

Essential Question
Food matters because it's something that is essential for every human being. Not only is food important in PA but in this entire WORLD.Without food we would starve and starvation in PA and the entire world isn't a good thing at ALL.I mean imagine how many deaths there would be, this would just make the population decrease by a lot.If starvation were to be a serious issue in my community then no one would be in a good state both physically and emotionally. Finally, stating that food really matters it's just something needed for survival.

If I were not only a student I would want to change this world.Perhaps, something that can put an end to world wide starvation. That would be wonderful! Maybe even for people going through poverty and suffering by starvation they would for sure benefit from this change. Another reason why food is important is because it provides people with the necessary protein that people need and deserve. This gives everyone the strenght and power to do the most simplest things they desire. This is something everyone does and without this we would be lonesome.

 This is why food matters.

shade, 12x18" --Opted for other

For the project "shade" I opted to do my own pice of art work. By doing this I decided I wanted to put my efforts into something for that I would enjoy more than the shading exercise. So I worked with photography, because that is an area of artwork where I find myself the most interested.  Here I took photographs of the sunset slowly changing while in a car diving. The colors in the sky change different shades while giving it a very pretty setting. I took these photos using my Cannon eos camera with a typical shooting lens. I love taking scenic pictures with this type of camera quality. While, this camera I used was my medium for this project.

color wheel, 18x18”

This assignment was to create our own color wheel while only using the primary colors. I used water color paints as my medium to create my color wheel. I thought this project was going to be more difficult than it turned out to be. The only difficulties I came across, was getting the colors to the shade I wanted. It was hard to figure out which colors to add to which and how much to get the outcome wanted.

texture, 8.5x11”each (3)

I found this project to be very accomplishing. Throughout my drawings of different texture, I used the same medium. The medium I used was a pencil, because I feel the most comfortable when using them. I have more control of how dark or light I want to shade something because I use them so often. So I get my best results when using pencil. In this assignment I was to draw three different textures which were, water, hair, and scales. Below I have my texture drawings. Water, I found to be the most difficult to represent since it is more of a clear texture than any other. So I decided to draw in the setting of a body of water with a light reflecting into it, to show the difference in the water texture. When drawing the hair, I used a picture of myself because I already know the actual texture of my hair and how it's shaped. For my last drawing of texture I drew the side view of a scaled fish. This was the texture I found the easiest to draw and also the most fun. I enjoyed this assignment and also had some new drawing experiences.

Shade, 12x18” each (4)

This is my shading piece for this quarter. My materials for this piece was a dulled pencil, dampened cloth, my fingers, a ruler, and a sheet of paper. When I work with shading, I am reminded that it is very important to get the lighting correctly. I begin the piece by having a dim shade, a back drop, in each square. I know a piece is done when I can step back and see where the light is coming from. When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of relief because I always want to give it my all.

When people see my work, I'd like them to know where the light is coming from and the type of work it is. When I work with my fingers, I am reminded that the strokes of my fingers have a big impact of where everything is going. The most difficult part of the whole drawing was getting the right about of darkness for each shade. Also the squares I had were very small and that made it hard to even out. The easiest part was making the mess because I could erase anything I didn't want.

The Beginning of “The Filling of a Shallow Shell”

A poetry book by Eryn James

We Will Be

This was a boundary,

In which I had never intended on crossing,

Which may have been the biggest mistake in our relationship,

The stench of resentment and distrust in the air was telling me that i shouldn't be here,

But the loneliness and distress plastered on his face is begging me to stay,

Begging me to engrave my place beside king as queen,

Fill the shallow middle of his bed with my soul,

Resting it on bed sheets and confusion,

Tangle my fingers to his like roots,

So that our children can look back on solidarity,

And when we grow older,

He will have eyes like camera lenses,

And shutter eyelids,

Capturing memories by the blink,

His smile still holding me here,

Cradling me in the curl of his lip as if it never gained a day of age past 19

And I will have the sky on the lining of my womb from the galaxies created there before the birth of each of our children

We will live as if our bones never began to hollow,

He will still hug me as if to say there will forever be a home in the bends of my elbows for you,

As if today is all we have left

And we are not greeted with tomorrow’s sun,

I'll smile like moon light

Bright and surrounded by darkness

Hoping to be someone’s guide back home

And kiss you like the sun

Hot and excited

I will love like the meaning of tomorrow doesn’t matter anymore,

And hope there’s a time between death and evolution where bones can still be in love,

Maybe somehow our souls will find their way back home,

Even when our bones become playgrounds for insects and rodent,

We will still have passion,

Painting salvation over whole cities with sunshine,

There does exist a place where bone and marrow doesn’t matter.

Fiji

I’ve been trying for so long to learn you,

To discover what bliss you have hidden in you the caves of your eye sockets,

All the while I never judged you by the soil browns of your skin,

Or the tangles in your crown,

Alls I wanted to do was read you,

Open like a wound after battle,

You’ve been through battles,

I can tell,

And alls I want to do is heal your hurt,

Find the Fiji in your tears and catch them like dreams,

And figure out why you cry entire utopias,

I am destine to know you,

Eager to figure out why you cry paradise,

And why you hate anyone who tries to care,

I only want to be the Neosporin to you scars,

Make them disappear as easy as they were thrown there,

Make whoever hurt you vanish as easily as they appeared,

I want you to trust my hands for nothing more than caressing you,

I need you to trust me for nothing more than loving you,

But acknowledge that I’m human and we all make mistakes,

I promise that I wont make promises that I have no control over keeping,

I wont promise you that it’ll all be ok,

Or that you’ll be fine,

Because I don’t know and wont until all this ends,

But if all fails and falls,

I’ll be here to pick up the pieces,

I’m here to pick up the pieces,

We’ll try to build back as whole as possible,

The lost pieces are only gone to show you that you’re human,

And to tell the world that you have a story,

Let Go

Does my name accidently slip off your lips when you kiss her,

Tell me you haven’t you been thinking about me,

Try to persuade me that you don’t stare when I walk past you,

Lie to me and say that you don’t have to pry your eyes open to awake because I am a permanent part of you limbo,

Tell her your sorry for calling her my name and mean it,

Apologize for comparing my past to her present so many times,

Kiss her without thinking of how much my lips meant to you,

Close your eyes and scratch her face over top of mine in your eyelids,

Let go,

So I wont be stuck here,

Half present,

Half past,

Broken in two,

Let go,

So I can learn to be a whole,

So I can learn to love something new,

Don’t think of it as moving on,

Think of it as an accomplishment,

Go,

And achieve something greater than I am,

I promise I’m not going to stand in your way,

I can’t promise I wont cry but I will heal from the pain,

I’ll turn my back if you want me too,

Just let go love,

There’s nothing left to hold onto,

Just sweaty palms and a sack of regrets flung over my shoulder,

I’ve learned I wasn’t meant to be here with you,

So enjoy her presence,

Call her beautiful without having my face in mind,

Don’t listen for my voice her cries,

I promise I won’t be there,

Tell her she’s a queen,

And offer her your thrown and stop thinking I’ll be back,

I wont,

Love her personality without comparing it to mine,

You have something worth loving,

You had something worth letting go of,

Love her and let me go,

Because I’m leaving now,

And I’m taking everything that you have memory of,

My name,

My smile,

My face,

My past,

My lips,

My voice,

I’m taking me,

And I don’t want you to come find me,

Forget me,

Let go.

Lost Each Other

It’s weird that we lost each other here,

In this fallacy of fantasies

But I’m ok with the fact that you're moving on,

I know,

She gave you more than I ever had to offer,

I still love you but I want you to recognize that there is more left for me in this pool of happiness,

I’ll try to find someone else willing to love the brokenness out of me,

Because here love lasts longer than lonesome anyhow,

Time flies when loving someone wrong and hurtful,

Quick and careless,

I don’t want to stay where I know I don’t belong,

You’ll see my face and realize that I am something worth wanting,

I’ll walk away from this whole and content but you should know,

That sometimes love is hurtful and we cant find solace in broken

I’ve tried.

I’ve tried to blanket a bed on top of fragmented fallacies of the perfect fantasy.

But we know lies hurt and they wont always heal,

So next time,

I wont try to run a race bare foot,

How We Left

Have you ever seen your ex love hugging someone the same way they used to hug you,

Kiss as if they had love notes chanting samba on their lips,

It makes my soul cringe,

Puts freezer burn on my heart,

And forces me to remember all the vacuous reasons I decided to end a such shameless love so expeditiously,

1. I was jealous of the way stars chose your eyes for bedrooms at night.

It made looking at you a lot harder knowing your perfection.

2. We used to watch the sunrise and you'd kiss me like the sunshine. You broke my guard down with you lips.

3. You screamed forever’s into my heart. You loved me too hard.

I hate that you’re gone now,

And I've been searching for someone to get you off my heart,

Trying to find someone who could out do you in loving me,

But I've found myself lonely,

My bedroom has been made hotel rooms for unsuccessful one night stands since you left,

Foreign bodies cannot make me feel as whole as you did,

Even when they're on top of me,

Ever since you left there's been this emptiness on the right side of my bed where you'd lay when you were here,

But I guess your content with her sleeping on my side of your bed,

Meeting you in the middle where our souls once met,

Where our unconditional love once lived,

What happen to us?

I know the ending was my fault,

But it takes two to tango,

So I hope your owning up to stepping on my feet,

I should've listened when you told me you couldn't dance,

But sometimes I’m glad I didn't,

Sometimes I'm glad I decided to gamble with my emotions,

Memories where made here,

I remember Sunday football games,

You'd lay your head in my lap and I’d rub your back,

I never liked football much but,

I'd still cheer for your favorite team,

'Cause you were my baby,

And I remember when I’d come over after a long day of school and you'd cuddle with me,

And make me laugh at everything,

I was yours,

I hope you remember,

I hope your not letting her create space in our memories for herself,

Because far before her there was me,

Remember when you used to call me your everything?

I never wanted to be much of anything,

But you insisted that I was the reason your world spun,

But now I guess I was just a model for the fitting of her crown,

I regret all of our mishaps,

But I cant put this all on you,

I know I used to yell,

And tell you I hated you,

But I'm a woman,

Most things I say when I yell aren’t true,

I promise when I said those things I was still loving you,

I just wanted a reason to get you mad,

So you’d have a reason to chase me,

But I guess you were tired of running

Islam

I will shatter myself in Islam,

Rebuild my temple in la il ilaha illa allah,

And own my character as a daughter of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W

I will never be ashamed of my garb,

Recite the Qur’an like Arabic was the very first star perched on the corners of my galaxy,

Bismil-laahi rrahmaani rrahiim,

Qul huwa Allahu ahad

Allahu assamad

Lam yalid walam yoolad

Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad

He was bore

Was not born,

Equal to no man

And I will praise him,

Sacrifice my self like lamb,

I serve no other purpose,

Learn the prayer buried in the moist palm of half Saudi half African Girl,

I will be worthy Insha-allah,

Islam saved me,

Saved me from myself,

From who I thought I wouldn’t be able to be,

From dishonesty

Helped me regain my self-respect and integrity,

I often find myself having to choose between my religion and something that I know I will be forgiven for,

But I always choose you,

Allah is my savior,

Allahu Akbar is my plea,

Love You Right

1 I don’t want to love you broken,

2 Don’t want to kiss you cold and lonely,

3 I cant bring myself to hug you loose and heartless,

4 Don’t lie to me,

2 Don’t want to kiss you cold and lonely,

4 Don’t lie to me,

5 Keep truthful even if honesty sounds crazy,

6 Don’t break my trust into stolen happiness,

5 Keep truthful even if honesty sounds crazy,

7 I want this to work,

6 Don’t break my trust into stolen happiness,

8 You have to help me keep together to love you,

7 I want this to work,

9 We all know that lies hurt but they always heal,

8 You have to help me keep together to love you,

10 I want to change and be able to love you properly,

9 We all know that lies hurt but they always heal,

3 I cant bring myself to hug you loose and heartless,

10 I want to change and be able to love you properly,

1 I don’t want to love you broken.

Savior

Some girls try to construct kings out of unhealed wounds claimed to be caused by shootings stars,

They try to believe that they have enough space in their luggage for other peoples souls,

My bones aren't designed to carry anyone else's burdens but my own,

I have picked up broken glass before,

Cradled it in the palms of my hands like disintegrating philosophy,

Decided that it was worth the splintered fingers and bandages,

You,

More than the “ratchet 52nd and market nigga” that you try to persuade yourself that you are,

This is an attempt to make sure that you know where you come from,

Snatched from the galaxy under your mothers bosom,

Crying stars and music,

You where born symphony,

But live Bach,

Loud and angry,

You apoplectic angel,

Born beautiful and g cleft,

Live like danger and catastrophe,

There are mornings when I wake up wishing that you'd just listen to me love,

I'd click my tongue against the oxygen surrounding your eardrums

Create something worth listening too,

Because it seems as if you only respond to hollow promises and nonsense,

But I wasn’t born music,

I was born poet,

No instrumental,

No base line,

Just words and ink,

For now,

I’ll try my best to sing for you,

Be sincere in my song,

I’m sure that I’ve heard a few girls sample you,

Music,

It sounds rather cacophonous to me,

And I know you want to believe in saviors,

But I can't save you,

I'm not here to pry out whatever monster buried itself in your chest,

I only want to pray for you,

Whisper help,

Under my salat,

And I hope that Allah will hear me and afford you salvation,

Because I can’t offer my soul as shelter love,

I’m not strong enough,

I’m just as in danger of losing myself as you are,

Too hollow,

Too many missing bricks to keep this house from crashing down with you in it,

I’m just hoping that you can gather enough of yourself in this poem,

To be whole enough for tomorrow.

Q3 - Jesus Jimenez - ART

For this quarter in art class, we focused a lot on different colors and shading, also a bit of detail. Out of this quarter I did the small self-portrait, and had to look at myself for quite a while. Then I had to work with my pencil and look at myself and the paper at the same time. I decided go draw lightly first. For the color wheel, I wanted to be careful. First I separated each color into a section each. Then I carefully mixed the colors in between so they could all blend. I got some cool colors yellow and green. Green yellow as such. Textures were interesting because I had to change styles quickly. I switched the position my hand and did other adjustments just to adjust to the style of drawing required the texture.

The shading practicing turned out to be helpful, other than swiping my pencil left and right, I never really focused on shading. I figure I need more help with that. For my 3rd quarter, I practiced different techniques. I had to step out of my comfort zone once again.

Small Self-Portrait
Large Self Portrait

Shading
Two-Point Perspective

Water: Part of the Texture assignment, the first part was water. For this, as well as every other assignment, my chosen medium was .05 mm mechanical pencil, and 4B, 2B, and HB shading pencils. I started by really looking at the water. I looked at it from the angle of "what colors are here, and what defines the space and shadows?". What I realized what that there were only 3 colors to bring out, and they were black, grey, and a white/grey nuance.I also looked at the shape of the waves and saw that they were more like lines rocking back and forth. So, I decided to start with lines; making variations in the direction that they rocked. Then the hardest part was diced which part was lighter and which part was darker. (I used a mid-tone to help give the allusion of the darks and lights as well.) I enjoyed this very much. I feel as though I was able to bring out the illusion of waster by really making my lights, light and my darks, dark.

Hair: Hair, the second installment of the texture assignment was definitely the easiest to me. I drew from life using the rubber eraser, .05mm mech pencil, and 4B, 2B, and HB shading pencils, I drew from life using my face. I started with a mid-tone, and then by the drawing the shape of my face and afterwards, the outlines of my hair's shape. What I did was look for the light of my hair, and the shadows from or on my hair darkened. I erased  the lighter areas of my hair, especially at the top, and I also followed a trail down strands of some of my hair. I feel like it was successful.

Scales: Scales was a bit more of a challenge, but I realized that it too was just shapes and shading. Using my same tools as before, I used an image form the web and started an outline of the snakes shape, and it was a pretty simple shape. I shaded the entire thing to get a nice mid-tone going as well. I then looked at the of each scale itself. Realizing that they were hexagons. I tediously drew the shape of the hexagons, while keeping in mid perspective. From there, I did a bit of shading and coloring around each scale and I also found a particular part of the snake that had a bright lighting, so I lightened that area.

Small Self-Portrait: This piece that was done earlier on the in year, but one of my favorites. Drawn from life, I used the same tools as before and started with a nice mid-tone and the outline of my face. I tend to start with my nose. I feel like If I can capture the shape of my cheekbones and nose, the picture can turn out great. I then moved to my eyebrow area and forehead and eyes. I can say that capturing the correct lighting in my eyes was difficult at first, but I think I got it down. I didn't focus too much on my hair, but I did get the shape down, as well as the shadows that it generated along my neck. Another thing that I returned to was the getting the light along my cheekbones, nose and eyes. In particular, the nose had the brightest lighting along it, so I lightened up around there for more definition. In general, I realized that lights and darks bring the more dimension to pictures, so I tired to really bring them out.

Large Self-Portrait: For this piece, which I could say that I worked a bit hard in the beginning, was also drawn from life. Looking at myself, I started with a large and dark mid-tone, and from there, I started with the bridge of my nose and them my cheekbones and eyes. I can says that hard part was capturing the lights and shadows around my jaw line and lips, and a better job could have been done. I then proceeded to hair, which I really didn't give much attention too. I also found that the source of light was behind my head, so I had to really lighten up the sides, and really darken some areas around my jaw. I realized that I changed this drawing around a lot and I'm still to pleased with the final product, but eh, I tried.

Personal Work: For the personal work, using my same material as before, I wanted to work more on practicing observation and and shading. Using an image that I found on the web, I basically looked at it and tried to the drawing the lines, lights and darks just as they were. It was a bit easier, because the lights and darks themselves were more dramatic, so I was able to really bring them out. Highlighting the hair was especially good practice for me, because I was able to image the angle the light was shone across the face. My favorite part would be the collarbone area, because I felt like I really captured the soft, yet stern neck and its shadow. Also the darkest shadow on the inside of the coat I felt was a great contrast from my mid-tone and really brought out a greater illusion.

Shading 1: This practice was the most simple of the drawings. Starting very dark on the edges, I smudged the pencil across evenly until I go tot the middle of the paper. Using my rubber eraser, I ran a straight line down the center to give the illusion of sunlight cracking through a pair of doors.

2. A bit harder, I stared with a plain circle, and began the shading around the circle first. I started at the top and shaded heavily, switching between 4B and HB at times and then I smudged down. I then began to shade heavily along the bottom edge of the circle. Using a paper towel, I smudged upwards in a rocking motion to give it more of a round, spherical appearance. The final touch was at the top, where the brightest part was erased to give it light- note that it was eased in a curvy way, to emphasize the shape of the sphere.

3. Even more challenging, but it was one of my favorites. I started with the same outline as the 1, but when in came to shading the circle the idea was to present concavity. The smaller circle was drawn inside of the larger circle, and the most important part was the dark shading more at the top. That gave that part of the sphere depth, like it had a dent in it.

4. This is my favorite as it was more challenging then all. The idea was to shade the circle such that it had the illusion thats it was being view in a top view,  and thats its shape was more pointy. The hardest part was the cent. I saw that the dark spot in the center was suppose to be a heavy shadow generated from the tip of the object, so I started there. From there, it was all about capturing the shape of the shadows, and giving them a cone like shape- as if they were wrapped around the object.

Two-Point Perspective:
E- This letter was draw from observing the key elements- the fact that the shape followed two vanishing points. Keeping that in mind, the lines was the easy part. I was easily able to give depth to the picture by keeping my horizon line present as well.

Room- Just as simply as I did the letter E, drawing the room was just as simple. Using my mech pencil and a ruler,  I just used lines and perspective to make the room.

No digas evidencia manipulado.
